Projecting Regions Of North Atlantic Right Whale, Eubalaena Glacialis, Habitat Suitability In The Gulf Of Maine In 2050, Camille Ross

Honors Theses

North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) are endangered. Understanding the role environmental conditions play in habitat suitability is key to determining the regions in need of protection for conservation of the species, particularly as climate change shifts suitable habitat. This thesis uses three species distribution modeling algorithms, together with historical data on whale abundance(1993 to 2009) and environmental covariates to build monthly ensemble models of past E. glacialis habitat suitability in the Gulf of Maine. Then, the models are projected onto the year 2050 for a range of climate scenarios. Specifically, the distribution of the species was modeled …

A Qualitative Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Environmental-Health Concerns In Vietnamese -Owned And -Operated Salons In The Greater Seattle Area, Cindy Pham Nguyen

Honors Theses

Environmental-health disparities in nail salons lies at a unique intersection of environmental, health, and social justice. Although the nail industry is booming in the United States, business often occurs at the expense of the well-being of nail salon workers. The workforce, many of whom are immigrant Vietnamese women, routinely handles products containing known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Furthermore, workers disproportionately experience negative health impacts from working in salons, including respiratory or musculoskeletal disorders. This behavioral study assesses potential variables (demographic background, health, personal behavior, salon management, and external influence) that impact the attitudes of Vietnamese nail salon workers toward environmental-health …

Forecasting The Thailand Housing Price Indexa Case Study On Condo Hpi During The Covid-19, Pengfei Chen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

HPI (house price index) measures the price development of houses sold to households. And it measures the price as a percentage change from some specific start date, which is treated as the benchmark with the index at 100. In another word, HPI reflects the housing market fluctuation in some respects. Moreover, real estate is a good type of investment for people for avoiding various risks. Hence, under the global rampant of COVID-19, forecasting the possible short-term floating of HPI would offer some foresight to the residential market both on individual and policy sides. In this paper, five kinds of models …

Portraits Of Professional Collaboration: Faculty-Librarian Teaching Partnerships, Carrie L. Forbes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many regional accrediting organizations for higher education have embraced information literacy as a key component for both student success and student learning outcomes. Through embedded librarianship practices, librarians are now taking a leading role in developing and promoting users’ information literacy skills and in adopting an active classroom teaching approach. Faculty-librarian team teaching is a best practice for integrating information literacy into the higher education curricula, but the extant research has largely focused on the barriers to collaboration. Using Walsh and Kahn’s (2010) model of “collaborative working” as a conceptual framework, this dissertation explores the qualities and characteristics of four …

Hands-on research experiences are important opportunities for students to learn about the nature of inquiry and gain confidence in solving problems. Here, we present an inquiry-based lesson plan that investigates the foraging behavior of sciurid rodents (squirrels) in local habitats. Squirrels are an ideal study system for student research projects because many species are diurnal, easy to watch, and inhabit a range of habitats including college campuses. In this activity, instructors identify appropriate field sites and focal species, while students generate questions and brainstorm predictions in small groups regarding factors that might influence behavioral trade-offs in sciurids. Students conduct observational …

Engineering Ph-Dependent Antibody Interactions Through Linked Protonation Events In Interdomain Interfaces, Hyeyoung Eom Jan 2020

Engineering Ph-Dependent Antibody Interactions Through Linked Protonation Events In Interdomain Interfaces, Hyeyoung Eom

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Engineered antibodies are frequently used in life science applications, such as therapeutics and clinical diagnostics. These customized antibodies typically possess enhanced binding affinity and/or specificity, yet these interactions are only one-way binding events that cannot be easily controlled without extreme changes in conditions, such as pH, denaturant, and/or temperature that likely irreversible damage the antibody and antigen. Here, we explore the design of proton-linked binding events in the context of both antibody/hapten (i.e., a low molecular weight ligand target) and antibody/antigen complexes. Specifically, this work looks to overcome the challenges of engineering pH-dependent small ligand/protein interactions, as well as develop …

Biophysical And Socioeconomic Impacts Of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration In Burkina Faso, Basnewende Brice Fulgence Zoungrana Jan 2020

Biophysical And Socioeconomic Impacts Of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration In Burkina Faso, Basnewende Brice Fulgence Zoungrana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human actions such as overgrazing, the development of cities at the expense of forests, high intensity and poor agricultural management, and so forth, reduce the resources available for future generations. Because Earth has limited resources, it is important to judiciously use and manage natural resources. Human actions towards nature are the focus of my research in Africa. Increased demands for grazing, agriculture, and ecosystem services led some farmers in developing countries to use unsustainable practices, which may lead to low incomes and poor food nutrition for households. Farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR) may be a solution to these issues. FMNR …

Mechanical, Industrial & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we report the development of a portable and inexpensive infrared lightbox for improving the detection limits of paper-based phosphate devices. Commercial paper-based devices utilize the molybdenum blue protocol to detect phosphate in the environment. Although these devices are easy to use and have a long shelf life, their main deficiency is their low sensitivity based on the qualitative results obtained via a color chart. To improve the results, we constructed a compact infrared lightbox that communicates wirelessly with a smartphone. The system measures the absorbance of radiation for the molybdenum blue reaction in the infrared region of …

Analytical Variables Leading To The Involvement Of Consumers And Farmers In Sustainable Urban Agriculture In The Indianapolis Region, Olivia Holabird

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

200,000 people living in Indianapolis have low food access, most of whom live in low-income areas. One solution to these food deserts is sustainable urban agriculture. I investigated what factors bring people living in the Indianapolis region to become involved in sustainable agriculture in the hopes of increasing future involvement. To do this, I conducted 12 semi-structured interviews with 6 farmers and 6 consumers across the Indianapolis region. I used Vermeir and Verbeke’s analytical categories of values, social norms, certainty, perceived availability, and perceived influence. Through my interviews, however, I found my own variables of sense of identity, accessibility, health, …

CCX Research

Sustainable development is crucial to humanity. Utilization of primary socio-environmental data for analysis is essential for informing decision making by policy makers about sustainability in development. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches are useful for analyzing data. However, it was not easy for people who are not trained in computer science to use AI. The significance and novelty of this paper is that it shows how the use of AI can be democratized via a user-friendly human-centric probabilistic reasoning approach. Using this approach, analysts who are not computer scientists can also use AI to analyze sustainability-related EPI data. Further, this human-centric probabilistic …

Gas And Oil Drilling: A Look At Waste Management, Logan Kinney

Research Days Posters 2020

Hydraulic fracturing is a method of extracting oil and gas developed in the 1940s. The purpose of hydrofracking is to gain access to fossil energy deposits that had previously been inaccessible. This process produces a large majority of the world’s waste, in addition to polluting air and water. Due to this, hydrofracking in the state of New York was banned in 2014, yet continues in surrounding states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. Being that high-volume fracturing was banned in New York I chose to focus on Pennsylvania, more specifically Susquehanna County. I want to determine how waste management processes have …

Low Income Housing In Binghamton, Jessica O'Keefe Jan 2020

Low Income Housing In Binghamton, Jessica O'Keefe

Research Days Posters 2020

Housing is vital to the protection of individual human life and liberty, yet so many Americans find themselves housing insecure. This study examines housing insecurity in Binghamton, New York, its causes, and potential solutions through the use of interviews and participant observations. Despite the surplus of available housing and low demand, Binghamton's affordable housing problem seems to be a result of the university student presence in the city and the profit incentives of landlords. Public housing solutions tend to be most effective at eliminating these particular issues, suggesting the city should allocate more resources to providing affordable housing to its …

The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …
