Plagiarism is a subject of academic misconduct among teaching and research community in higher educational institutions. Information and communication technology has immensely made easy to access information in digital form or electronic form that can lead to copying words/text from any kind of information sources such as Internet, books, magazines, journals, project reports, publications, white papers etc, without acknowledging the original author/ authors with proper citation. Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone else's work and attempting to pass it off as one’s own. In the global academic scenario plagiarism occurs due to lack of knowledge or due to ignorance. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A survey on collection development for graphic novels was sent to 632 collection development librarians and also placed on the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services listserv. Once 200 responses had been received analysis of results began. Findings indicate that while all libraries reported possessing at least some graphic novels and most reported having what they would call a “graphic novel collection,” the medium is still quite uncommon when compared to existing library collections, comprising less than 1% of all books in academic libraries. Further, while it was found that most libraries are currently collecting graphic novels, collection development …

Culturally Inclusive Online Learning For Capacity Development Projects In International Contexts, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena
Culturally Inclusive Online Learning For Capacity Development Projects In International Contexts, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper explores cultural inclusivity in online learning design by discussing two international capacity development projects: an online tutor mentor development program in Sri Lanka and a hybrid physician assistant training program in Ghana. Inclusivity involves establishing partnerships and conducting needs assessments to maximize the capacity that already exists within a given context, and addressing cultural factors that impact online learning- — developing a learning community, negotiating identity, power, and authority, generating social presence, supporting collaboration, engaging in authentic inquiry-based learning, navigating interactions in a second language, and developing co-mentoring relationships to support learning. The paper provides a framework, WisCom …

Transformative online pedagogies call for innovative ways of conceptualizing the online environment and the student, teacher, and peer relationships. In this paper, we focus on how distributed co-mentoring can scaffold both social and knowledge building processes to develop culturally inclusive online learning communities. We critique traditional mentoring relationships, which have often sustained a biased class structure exclusive of diverse populations. We conceptualize co-mentoring drawing from the perspectives of two alternative mentoring theories: (1) feminist postmodern values that bring women and minorities into educational networks, and (2) mentoring mosaic where a diverse range of individuals of different ranks, ages, genders, ethnicities, …

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Online wisdom communities provide virtual spaces for diverse learners to discover collaborative solutions to real-world problems. Working for the common good, communities based on wisdom encourage both individual and collective growth. Based on sociocultural theory, we developed an instructional design framework, “WisCom,” that guides educators in cultivating culturally inclusive online environments, such as courses and web-based training sessions. Within the WisCom framework, practitioners can tailor existing tools and platforms, such as Moodle and Sakai, to encourage collaborative discussion and problem-solving. However, a platform created with the tenets of WisCom in mind has not yet been designed. Based on our previous …

Exploring Cryotherapy As A Therapeutic Approach For Stress-Induced Tension Headaches In College Students, Mona Hassan Abdelaal
Nursing
ABSTRACT Tension-type headaches and stress are common problems for students. It is one of the most neglected headache types, with prevalence of ~ 15–20% in population-based studies. Alternative and complementary medicine such as cryotherapy is effective for relieving physical and psychological pain; using ice compresses by placing it at the back of the neck, leads to relief of tension and anxiety, and gives the feeling of relaxation and full of energy for doing daily life activities. The findings from this study provide the basis for the formulation of future research questions that can explore the effect of cryotherapy on the …

As more and more children are being identified as needing special services, all teachers need to know special education laws. One hundred and thirty-eight preservice teachers answered an online survey about their knowledge and confidence level of IDEA and Section 504. Our participants, on average, did not have accurate knowledge of IDEA or Section 504 laws (overall IDEA X = 42%; 504 X = 40%). Having coursework related to IDEA and Section 504 laws did increase participants’ scores, regardless of whether they were majoring in a special education related degree or not. However, their scores were still low, basically at …

Although research has identified culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) as vitally important for educators in today’s increasingly diverse classrooms, few studies exist to explore the development of both pre- and in-service teachers’ knowledge about and self efficacy for CRP. This mixed methods study examined pre- and in-service teachers’ perceptions of CRP as well as their CRP self-efficacy. Both pre-service and in-service teachers participated in professional development aimed at improved knowledge and self-efficacy for CRP. Dependent-samples t-tests revealed positive and statistically significant changes in participants’ CRP self-efficacy. Qualitative analyses demonstrated participants worked to better understand their core values (know why they teach), …

Fundamental to the hypothesis-driven approach to assessing the special-education (SPED) needs of English learners (ELs) is the awareness that behaviors often exhibited by ELs may mirror indicators of learning disabilities (e.g., difficulty comprehending text, difficulty following directions, lack of appropriate classroom behavior, lack of attention). We surveyed 330 school professionals to examine their perceptions about four mirrored behaviors displayed by ELs during instruction, as indicators of either a second-language difficulty or a learning disability. Only 31% of the respondents correctly indicated that none of the behaviors can distinguish these two possibilities. The probability of correct assessment was positively associated with …

As the culture of the American elementary classroom continues to diversify, teachers’ practices must also evolve to best meet the needs of students, specifically, English Learners (ELs). This article encourages elementary educators to include music in their general education curriculum by highlighting the lack of music education in the classroom, which fuels the discussion for its need; discusses the historical use of language to support the impact of music on Kingergarten-6th grade speakers; and dissects the linguistic, cognitive, cultural, and social aspects of music, all of which have a positive impact on language use and development. Research findings suggest that …

On "Being There" In A Pandemic: Are Classrooms Without Bodies Still "Real" Places Of Learning?, Lauren Angelone
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In March 2020, schools and universities were abruptly shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as abruptly as they shut down, they were moved to fully online instruction. It was and continues to be an adjustment from classrooms with bodies to online classrooms without bodies, and now in-person classrooms with distanced masked bodies, or some combination of the two. As such, a discourse has appeared decrying the absence of what we know was the “real” educational environment. In this commentary, I use a series of vignettes to illuminate the ontological and epistemological dilemma of this discourse and then bring …
