Pistis, Persuasion, And Logos In Aristotle, Owen Goldin Jan 2020

Pistis, Persuasion, And Logos In Aristotle, Owen Goldin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The core sense of pistis as understood in Posterior Analytics, De Anima, and the Rhetoric is not that of a logical relation in which cognitively grasped propositions stand in respect to one another, but the result of an act of socially embedded interpersonal communication, a willing acceptance of guidance offered in respect to action. Even when pistis seems to have an exclusively epistemological sense, this focal meaning of pistis is implicit; to have pistis in a proposition is to willingly accept that proposition as a basis for some kind of activity (albeit possibly theoretical) as a result of some kind …

I Am A Black Woman, A Boss, And I Represent The University: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Women Senior Student Affairs Officers, Martia Brawner King

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lived experiences of African American Senior Student Affairs Officers has been riddled with systemic racism, sexism, and unrealistic expectations. Research has shown that there is value in intentional recognition of the intersection of their identities, identifying support mechanisms, and providing adequate resources for the women to be successful. This study aims to determine the unique experiences of each woman not only within their careers, but also from childhood. Poignantly asking about the span of their lived experiences, but also strategies used in climbing to and surviving in senior student affairs leadership positions? Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs) are defined …

When Less Is More: The Downside Of Customer Knowledge Sharing In New Product Development Teams, Yihui Tang, Datelina Marinova Jan 2020

When Less Is More: The Downside Of Customer Knowledge Sharing In New Product Development Teams, Yihui Tang, Datelina Marinova

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Despite the common belief that knowledge sharing in new product development (NPD) teams is beneficial, empirical findings are mixed. We adopt a microfoundations perspective and draw from the socio-cognitive theory to propose a model that theorizes a nonlinear effect of customer knowledge sharing behaviors on NPD performance. In particular, we identify the underlying mechanism through which shared common customer knowledge and perceived diagnostic value shape the nonlinear returns to customer knowledge sharing behaviors. In Study 1, data from the biotechnology industry provide support for the hypothesis that customer knowledge sharing behaviors in NPD teams have an inverted U-shaped relationship with …

Teaching Jihad: Developing Religious Literacy Through Graphic Novels, Melanie C. Brooks, Kelly Deits Cutler, Fida Sanjakdar, Daniel D. Liou Jan 2020

Teaching Jihad: Developing Religious Literacy Through Graphic Novels, Melanie C. Brooks, Kelly Deits Cutler, Fida Sanjakdar, Daniel D. Liou

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined the representations of jihad in graphic novels to ascertain how its depictions may inform the development of religious literacy in secondary classrooms. Hegemonic constructions of jihad in theWest are commonly reduced to false binaries that shape non-Muslims’ extant beliefs and perceptions of Islam and Muslims. This raises concerns about the ways in which societal expectations shape knowledge formation in schools. Accordingly, this critical content analysis explored the depiction of jihad in three graphic novel memoirs, an increasingly popular medium of instruction in secondary classrooms. Our analysis identified three forms of jihad conveyed through the graphic novels, specifically: …

The significance of green public spaces is well documented in relation to social inclusiveness, human health, and biodiversity, yet how green public spaces achieve what Gough (2017) has termed "sustainable wellbeing" is less understood. This contribution presents preliminary results from a study of green public spaces in four mega-cities of South and Southeast Asia: Chennai (the Republic of India), Metro Manila (the Republic of the Philippines), Singapore (the Republic of Singapore), and Shanghai (the People's Republic of China), cities that have climates ranging from tropical, to subtropical and temperate. The conceptual framework brings together social practice theories with human development …

Exploring The Impact Of Brexit On Uk’S Engineering Education Sector From The Perspective Of European Students And Staff, I. Direito, B. Williams, Shannon Chance

Conference papers

The UK higher education attracts a far higher number of international academics from all over the world, who teach and do research, than any other country in Europe, being only surpassed by Switzerland [1]. Moreover, because engineering itself is considered a global field, this sub-field of higher education also relies on international mobility more than most academic disciplines in the UK The impact of the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum of June 2016, commonly referenced as the Brexit referendum, is still unfolding and under continuing analysis. However, it is widely anticipated that it will disrupt European student and staff …

Identifying And Disentangling Interleaved Activities Of Daily Living From Sensor Data, Eoin Rogers Jan 2020

Identifying And Disentangling Interleaved Activities Of Daily Living From Sensor Data, Eoin Rogers

Doctoral

Activity discovery (AD) refers to the unsupervised extraction of structured activity data from a stream of sensor readings in a real-world or virtual environment. Activity discovery is part of the broader topic of activity recognition, which has potential uses in fields as varied as social work and elder care, psychology and intrusion detection. Since activity recognition datasets are both hard to come by, and very time consuming to label, the development of reliable activity discovery systems could be of significant utility to the researchers and developers working in the field, as well as to the wider machine learning community.

Self-Reported Data For Mental Workload Modelling In Human-Computer Interaction And Third-Level Education, Lucas Rizzo, Luca Longo Jan 2020

Self-Reported Data For Mental Workload Modelling In Human-Computer Interaction And Third-Level Education, Lucas Rizzo, Luca Longo

Articles

Mental workload (MWL) is an imprecise construct, with distinct definitions and no predominant measurement technique. It can be intuitively seen as the amount of mental activity devoted to a certain task over time. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature for the modelling and assessment of MWL. In this paper, data related to two sets of tasks performed by participants under different conditions is reported. This data was gathered from different sets of questionnaires answered by these participants. These questionnaires were aimed at assessing the features believed by domain experts to influence overall mental workload. In total, 872 records …

Lower-Income Tax Planning, Manoj Viswanathan Jan 2020

Lower-Income Tax Planning, Manoj Viswanathan

Faculty Scholarship

Tax planning is generally criticized by scholars as inefficient; that is, imposing welfare-reducing costs by incentivizing transactions with few non-tax economic benefits. This Article argues that this view is unacceptably narrow and makes the original claim that tax planning by lower-income taxpayers is often welfare-enhancing and should, as a normative matter, be encouraged. As such, various parties, including the IRS, law school clinics, legal academics, and tax practitioners should actively strategize to reduce the transaction costs currently hindering lower-income tax planning. This Article then applies that mandate to a specific cohort of lower-income taxpayers- drivers working in the sharing economy-and …

When Are Vaccine Mandates Appropriate?, Dorit R. Reiss, Carmel Shachar Jan 2020

When Are Vaccine Mandates Appropriate?, Dorit R. Reiss, Carmel Shachar

Faculty Scholarship

Vaccine refusal is a serious public health problem, especially in the context of diseases with potential to spark global pandemics, such as Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This article examines whether and when compelling vaccination through mandates and criminalization, for example, are appropriate. It argues that some legal approaches are ethical when they preserve social stability, trust in government, therapeutic research opportunities, or when they diminish disease severity.

An Unappreciated Constraint On The President's Pardon Power, Aaron J. Rappaport Jan 2020

An Unappreciated Constraint On The President's Pardon Power, Aaron J. Rappaport

Faculty Scholarship

Most commentators assume that, except for the few restrictions expressly mentioned in the U.S. Constitution, the President's pardon power is unlimited. This Paper suggests that this common view is mistaken in at least one unexpected way. Presidential pardons must satisfy a modest procedural rule: they must list the specific crimes covered by the pardon. The "specificity requirement" means that vague and broadly worded pardons are invalid. This claim bears a significant burden of persuasion, since it runs so counter to accepted opinion. Nonetheless, that burden can be met. This Paper's argument rests on an originalist understanding of the constitutional text, …

A Critique Of Jurisdictionality, Scott Dodson Jan 2020

A Critique Of Jurisdictionality, Scott Dodson

Faculty Scholarship

Over the last two decades, and culminating in a quartet of cases decided in the last two terms, the Supreme Court has erected a frame work for determining when a rule is "jurisdictional." This framework is important because questions of jurisdictionality routinely come up in federal litigation. Pressing the virtues of simplicity and clarity in jurisdictional rules to avoid the costs of mistaken assumptions of jurisdiction, the framework deploys clear-statement rules and formalistic, rule-based tests in an effort to be, in the Court's words, "easy to apply" and "readily administrable." In this article, I expose the weak nesses of the …

Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In Military, Ming Hsu Chen Jan 2020

Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In Military, Ming Hsu Chen

Faculty Scholarship

The immigration system is in crisis. Long lines of asylum seekers at the border and immigrants in the interior spend years waiting for their day in immigration court. This is true in the agencies that process appli- cations for immigration benefits from legal immigrants as well. Since 2016, delays in naturalization have increased to historic proportions. The problem is even worse for military naturalizations, where delays are ac- companied by denials and overall declines in military naturalizations. It is the latest front in the battle on legal migration and citizenship. These impediments to citizenship demonstrate an extreme form of policies …

Representing Veterans, Jennifer D. Oliva Jan 2020

Representing Veterans, Jennifer D. Oliva

Federal law has long deprived American veterans of certain fundamental legal rights enjoyed by non-veterans and attributable to veteran sacrifice. Federal case law, for example, denies veterans the right to bring an action in tort against the federal government to vindicate in-service injuries. And the United States Code deprives veterans of their right to robust judicial oversight of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) service-connected benefit decisions. This pair of due process deprivations is compounded by the federal statute that prohibits veterans from exercising the fundamental right to counsel during the initial stage of the VA claims process. This Article examines …

Clicking In The Dark: Are Student Financial Aid Websites Accessible For Students With Disabilities?, Zachary W. Taylor

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The United States (U.S.) Access Board, a branch of the federal government responsible for advancing the inclusion of people with disabilities into U.S. society, recently amended Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On January 18th, 2018, the final Section 508 amendment required all Title IV institutions of higher education in the United States to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG) at the Level-A and Level-AA thresholds. As students with disabilities are often minoritized from the U.S. higher education system, this study explored the web accessibility of institutional .edu financial aid websites (n=450) to learn if …

Parent Borrowing And College Completion, Jennie H. Woo, Stephen Lew

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Parent PLUS loans are available for parents of traditional students, allowing them to borrow up to the complete cost of attendance if they pass a credit check. Having access to more loan funds might increase a student’s chances of obtaining a bachelor’s degree by allowing them to attend a higher quality school, or to spend fewer hours working and perform better academically. Among students who intend to earn a 4-year degree and are eligible for PLUS loans, are those whose parents take out Parent PLUS loans, more likely to earn BA degrees than those who don’t?
