Reducing Suicide By Providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Suicide Prevention, Wendy Larkin
Reducing Suicide By Providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Suicide Prevention, Wendy Larkin
Student Scholarly Projects
Veteran suicide is a serious and persistent national problem, which demands an effective treatment intervention. This Evidence-Based Practice project (EBP) addressed the question: Do patients with a psychiatric in-patient diagnosis of suicide ideation, who after discharge self-elect outpatient Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) treatment over a 6-week time frame, reduce the likelihood of hospital readmission for suicidal ideation vs. patients who decline CBT-SP treatment and elect Treatment as Usual (TAU)? The literature is prolific in validating that CBT-SP is successful in determining the effectiveness of CBT-SP vs. TAU in reducing suicidal behaviors in adults.
Hospital readmission data were collected on …
Implementation Of An Electronic Alert For Improving Adherence To Diabetic Foot Exam Screenings In Type 2 Diabetic Patients In Primary Care Clinics, Ruby Denson
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at an increased risk of complications including foot ulcerations (Harris-Hayes et al., 2020). Preventive care is essential for the early detection of foot ulcers but despite the advantages of preventive screening, a limited number of primary care providers perform annual foot exams (Williams et al., 2018).
PICOT: The clinical question that guided this project was, “In adult patients with T2DM receiving care in a primary care setting, will the implementation of an electronic clinical reminder alert (ECR) increase provider adherence to performing an annual diabetic foot exam and risk …

We studied Calculus II classes for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors using different testing modes. Three sections with 324 students employed: paper-and-pencil testing, computer-based testing, and both. Computer tests gave immediate feedback and allowed multiple submissions and pooling. Paper-and-pencil tests (PPTs) required work and explanation allowing inspection of high cognitive demand tasks. Each test mode used the strength of its method. Students were given the same lecture by the same instructor on the same day and the same homework assignments and due dates. The design …
Review Of The Validity And Feasibility Of Image-Assisted Methods For Dietary Assessment, Christoph Höchsmann, Corby K. Martin
Review Of The Validity And Feasibility Of Image-Assisted Methods For Dietary Assessment, Christoph Höchsmann, Corby K. Martin
Clinical Research Faculty Publications
Accurately quantifying dietary intake is essential to understanding the effect of diet on health and evaluating the efficacy of dietary interventions. Self-report methods (e.g., food records) are frequently utilized despite evident inaccuracy of these methods at assessing energy and nutrient intake. Methods that assess food intake via images of foods have overcome many of the limitations of traditional self-report. In cafeteria settings, digital photography has proven to be unobtrusive and accurate and is the method of choice for assessing food provision, plate waste, and food intake. In free-living conditions, image capture of food selection and plate waste via the user’s …

High grade gliomas (HGG) have a propensity to recur locally and have poor outcomes. As such, safe and effective treatment is paramount. Target treatment with stereotactic radiation allows safe re-irradiation through minimizing normal brain tissue radiation due to its high precision. In this review, we evaluated the clinical experiences using SRS and FSRT for re-irradiation in HGG. We report the radiobiological advantages and disadvantages of both modalities as well as the safety and efficacy published in current literature.

Construction Of A Dispute-Resolution Framework Under The International Judicial System For The Settlement Of The Inter-Korean Conflict Over The Northern Limit Line: Operating The Advisory Proceedings Of The International Court Of Justice, Hyun Jin Kim
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
To construct a dispute-resolution framework for the inter-Korean conflict over the Northern Limit Line (“NLL Conflict”) under the international judicial system, this dissertation proposes an advisory proceeding of the International Court of Justice (“ICJ”) as the most promising alternative. It has proven difficult to draw a negotiated solution to this decades-long conflict, despite each of the respective State parties involved in the NLL Conflict presenting various arguments and claims about the valid legal status of the NLL. In this context, this dissertation examines the ICJ’s contribution to the resolution of international disputes, particularly controversy over the question of laws, through …

Introduction The prevalence of obesity-related disorders has been steadily increasing over the past couple of decades. Diseases that were once only detected in adults are now prevalent in children, such as hyperlipidemia. The adipose tissue-derived hormonal factor C1q TNF Related Protein 3 (CTRP3) has been linked to triglyceride regulation especially in animal models. However, the relationship between circulating CTRP3 levels and obesity-related disorders in human subjects …

Ever since it was first detected in December 2019, the number of confirmed cases has continued to increase. Within a short period, this disease has become a global issue, and therefore it is characterized as a pandemic. The current understanding and explanations are based on epidemiological, clinical and physiological observations. Besides, it remains a great challenge, as much remains to be understood about this new disease-causing virus. Therefore, we seek to provide an overview of SARS-CoV-2, including its classification, origin, …
Gods Among Men, Christian Burgos
Gods Among Men, Christian Burgos
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Abstract Gods Among Men is a creative text that functions critically to dissect the genre of superhero fiction and bring forth critiques of our culture of worshipping celebrities and political figures. I cite Woody Evans’ work in my critical introduction as being central to my project. Evans puts forth the idea that superheroes are inherently conservative because they are reactive agents that do not proactively change anything. They instead maintain the status quo. Villains, on the other hand, try to effect change for a different end, one they deem better for society. Through the use of characters, this text demonstrates …

A Gene Expression Profile Associated With Successful Cns Axon Regeneration In Xenopus Laevis, Jamie L. Belrose
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Background: The South African claw-toed frog, Xenopus laevis, is uniquely suited for studying differences between regenerative and non-regenerative responses to CNS injury within the same organism, because some CNS neurons (e.g., retinal ganglion cells after optic nerve crush (ONC)) regenerate axons throughout life, whereas others (e.g., hindbrain neurons after spinal cord injury (SCI)) lose this capacity as tadpoles metamorphose into frogs. Tissues from these CNS regions (frog ONC eye, tadpole SCI hindbrain, frog SCI hindbrain) were used in a three-way RNA-seq study of axotomized CNS axons to identify potential core gene expression programs for successful CNS axon regeneration.

The A.J. Diaries, Angelica Rose Reilly
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This piece is a creative, fictional retelling of The People vs Orenthal James Simpson. Often referred to as the trial of the century, the O.J. Simpson case continues to captivate the attention of people all over the country. My retelling of this notorious case is done through a series of journal entries, written to feel like the genuine musings of the victim’s sister. The scope of this case is enormous, so encapsulating every single element was not possible. To account for this and still write a comprehensive story about the trial, I included a “publisher’s” note at the beginning, explaining …

Being Careful : Progressive Era Women And The Movements For Better Reproductive Health Care, Sarah Patterson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
ABSTRACTFor American and British women, the definition of being healthy changed in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Previously, there had been a resigned acceptance of the fact that a woman’s reproductive capacity often relegated her to a lifetime of suffering and ill health. Certainly, individual women sometimes sought out solutions to their health problems, but there was no concerted social movement to help all women. Then in the Progressive Era that changed. The professionalization of medicine, combined with scientific breakthroughs, such as using Salvarsan to treat syphilis and urine testing to identify eclampsia meant that women could …

Through iterative case review processes, the author used this data to: a) clarify organizational policy and practices at each of the colleges/universities; and then b) to identify the impact of …
Structured Data Mining Networks, Time Series, And Time Series Of Networks, Lin Zhang
Structured Data Mining Networks, Time Series, And Time Series Of Networks, Lin Zhang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The rate at which data is generated in modern applications has created an unprecedented demand for novel methods to effectively and efficiently extract insightful patterns. Methods aware of known domain-specific structure in the data tend to be advantageous. In particular, a joint temporal and networked view of observations offers a holistic lens to many real-world systems. Example domains abound: activity of social network users, gene interactions over time, a temporal load of infrastructure networks, and others. Existing analysis and mining approaches for such data exhibit limited quality and scalability due to their sensitivity to noise, missing observations, and the need …
The Relationship Between Group Identification And Perceived Control Under Stressful Conditions, Fanshu Jin
The Relationship Between Group Identification And Perceived Control Under Stressful Conditions, Fanshu Jin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Group identification provides important psychological resources. One potential benefit is that it may relieve individuals’ strain in stressful situation by increasing their perceived personal control. The current research explores the different roles that group identification plays in reaction to stressful performance situations. In particular, it investigates the extent to which group identification impacts perceived control in performance contexts. It was hypothesized that activating group identification prior to performing a challenging task will bolster perceptions of personal control, thereby sustaining or improving performance. An experimental study was conducted that manipulated salience of group identification, either before or after exposure to a …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis focuses on various factors affecting health of American adults and the elderly based on the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). In chapter 1, I examine the role of educational and racial differences in life expectancy (LE) and health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) for Americans at ages 45-64 using Health and Retirement Study (HRS) during 2000-2016. I compute severity-weighted prevalence of diseases with comorbidity adjustments based on the Global Burden of Disease (2015), and map onto the information on 17 doctor-diagnosed diseases and four self-rated disabling health conditions from HRS. This approach allows us to evaluate the importance of major …

Teaching Early Literacy Skills To Low-Income Mothers, Cecilia Regalado
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many mothers categorized as low-income families don't know how to help their children to build language and early literacy skills. One of the main reasons why they are struggling a lot is because of the lack of knowledge and resources within their grasp group. Thus, the Women’s, Infant’s, and Children’s is a federal assistance program that will help many of them to provide early literacy techniques, food coupons, and healthy eating habits to pregnant women and children under 5 years old. For example, by teaching children how to talk or just making simple conversations at an early age will help …
