Can Small Farmers Survive?: Problems Of Commercializing The Milk Value Chain In Pakistan, Erum Sattar Dec 2020

Can Small Farmers Survive?: Problems Of Commercializing The Milk Value Chain In Pakistan, Erum Sattar

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Milk in Pakistan is infused with the self-understanding of a nation. British colonial administrators laid the modern-day foundations of the country’s structure through land grants to small farmers. In an agricultural country where nearly forty percent of the population remains food insecure, rearing animals is a way of life in the rural areas where milk remains an important source of animal protein. Selling the daily surplus that families don’t consume is a significant source of earnings for cash poor families – and here an unprecedented change is taking place within dairy management and milk procurement systems. The scale of this …

The U.S. Dairy Industry In The 20th And 21st Century, George B. Frisvold Dec 2020

The U.S. Dairy Industry In The 20th And 21st Century, George B. Frisvold

Journal of Food Law & Policy

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the U.S. dairy industry was comprised of millions of small-scale operations producing for their own or for very local consumption. By the end of the 20th Century, the industry was dominated by large-scale producers marketing products via large cooperatives. Improvements in transportation, advances in animal breeding and feeding technologies, and scale economies have allowed the industry to be more competitive on global markets, where there is now active international trade in dairy products. Major government programs to support dairy farm income date back to Depression-era problems facing the industry. Federal programs to support …

History Dissertations - Archive

This micro study of the Akron and Barberton, Ohio, Divisions of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) adds to the understanding the geographic diversity of the Garvey Movement’s expansive reach. It begins to uncover the importance of Garveyism in the Midwest and in Ohio, specifically, where the UNIA’s presence was larger than in any other Midwestern state. Black people in Akron and Barberton who, like millions of others around the world, joined Marcus Garvey’s global, Pan-African organization and embraced Garveyism’s holistic pursuit of Black liberation. Development Of Deterioration Models For Street Pavement In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Mladjan John Grujicic Dec 2020

Development Of Deterioration Models For Street Pavement In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Mladjan John Grujicic

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Accurate prediction of pavement deterioration is vital for an efficient and cost-effective allocation of available budgets for keeping an agency’s road networks operating at a desirable level. Currently, most cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area are using the software PAVERTM and the associated performance models to predict future conditions as they do not have available reliable prediction models. However, the problem with this type of modeling is that the models are not calibrated to local conditions. The Pavement Deterioration Prediction models that have been developed in this research will help any pavement management agencies within DFW Metroplex area to …

Recompilation Of Lithological Proxies Across The Permian-Triassic Boundary, Heather Nicole Brauer Dec 2020

Recompilation Of Lithological Proxies Across The Permian-Triassic Boundary, Heather Nicole Brauer

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The largest mass extinction occurred near the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB; 251.902 ± 0.024 Ma; Shen et al., 2011), with the demise of more than 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species. This study expands sedimentary data bases created by Rees and others (2002) and the PALEOMAP Project by Scotese (2001). Lithological data was categorized as upper Permian (259.1-254.902 Ma) or Lower Triassic (251.902-247.2 Ma), and the paleogeographic information of the proxies were reconstructed using GPlates 2.0. These lithological proxies are compared with climate sensitivity simulations from the fully coupled comprehensive Community Climate System Model (CCSM3). The climate simulation …

Psychological, Social And Political Correlates Of Youth Civic Engagement In Kosovo, Linda Abazi-Morina

All Dissertations

There is a robust literature that documents the importance of youth civic engagement, both at the individual and societal levels. Moreover, young people's civic activism is vital for strengthening democracy in developing and transitional countries, such as Kosovo. Despite the abundant literature at the global level, mainly in Western countries, there is a lack of research on the level and dynamics of young people's civic engagement in developing countries, especially in the Western Balkans. Although there has been progress in recent years, youth civic activism remains understudied in the region. Using data from the Kosovo Youth Study 2018/2019, this study …

An Examination Of Continuous Improvement In An Educational Organization, Billy Jacques Gira, Jennifer Malanga Martinez Dec 2020

An Examination Of Continuous Improvement In An Educational Organization, Billy Jacques Gira, Jennifer Malanga Martinez

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Continuous improvement (CI) is used across organizations to solve problems. Since the 2010s, CI practices have gained popularity in education. When comparing business organizations’ applications of CI practices to those in education, a gap is evident. Educational organizations create strategic plans, set long-term goals, implement initiatives, and measure overall outcomes in terms of student achievement. However, when attempting to build a high-performing culture and improve customer service between district departments and school centers, frequent and routine monitoring of customer experiences must occur.

This study examines current CI practices in a large, urban school district as they relate to improving the …

The Effect Of Using Native Versus Nonnative Language On The Participation Level Of Medical Students During Pbl Tutorials, Maha M. Al Turki, Mohamud S. Mohamud, Emad Masuadi, Mohammed A. Altowejri, Abdullah Farraj, Henk G. Schmidt Dec 2020

Health Professions Education

Purpose: Language competency has been perceived to be a significant barrier to both learning and interaction in university. However, most studies in this field confine themselves to perceptions of students. This study focused on actual behaviors in small group discussions. It explored whether linguistic differences affect the level of participation between students who conduct discussions in their native Arabic language and those who participate in a second language, being English. Method: An experimental study conducted at a Saudi medical school. First-year medical students were assigned randomly to attend two small-group discussions either in Arabic or in English. All sessions were …

Incorporating Critical Thinking: Self-Perception Of Teachers’ Ability To Promote Critical Thinking Skills In Primary Grades (K-2), Courtney Milligan Dec 2020

Incorporating Critical Thinking: Self-Perception Of Teachers’ Ability To Promote Critical Thinking Skills In Primary Grades (K-2), Courtney Milligan

Dissertations

The ability to think critically is a fundamental life skill and is an essential part of being a productive and contributing member of society. “Research shows that elements of critical thinking need to be taught explicitly” (Haber, 2020). The practice of developing critical thinking skills while students are initially "developing as thinkers" in primary grades is essential. According to Wagner (2008), his research finds that children should begin developing critical thinking skills as soon as they “are capable of abstract thinking” (p.17). Wagner (2008) argues that students need to develop these essential skills to effectively participate in our democracy and …

A Qualitative Study Of Differences Among Hearing Parents In Positive Experiences Raising A Deaf Child: An Emergent Model Informed By Positive Psychology, Amy Szarkowski, Patrick J. Brice Dec 2020

A Qualitative Study Of Differences Among Hearing Parents In Positive Experiences Raising A Deaf Child: An Emergent Model Informed By Positive Psychology, Amy Szarkowski, Patrick J. Brice

JADARA

The current qualitative study explored the positive, internal, and growth-enhancing experiences hearing parents derived from raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. Based on characteristics of parents’ process and outcomes of the parenting experiences, three distinct parent patterns were identified. Reflective Positive Parents reflected deeply about their experiences, quickly and easily identified positive experiences, and were open to making adjustments to meet their child’s needs. Engaged Parents contemplated their experiences, yet decisions about how to best support their children in many remained unresolved; this group identified both positive and negative aspects of parenting and attempted to align …

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Obesity is a well-known modifiable risk factor that contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. In the Rio Grande Valley, a region located in southern Texas, the rate of obesity rises to 47%, compared to 44% in the US. [4] Obesity is largely driven by poor diet and lack of physical activity and poor compliance/adherence to dietary and physical activity recommendations. [4] We seek to gauge the effect of green prescriptions, prescribed lifestyle modification, on compliance in the RGV population. Selected patients will receive a pre- and post-survey for subjective measures and be given a workout regimen according to exercise history. …

Caver Knowledge And Biosecurity Attitudes Towards White-Nose Syndrome And Implications For Global Spread, S. Salleh, K. Cox-Witton, Y. Salleh, Jasmin Hufschmid

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS), caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans , has caused catastrophic declines of bat populations in North America. Risk assessment indicates that cavers could pose a risk for the spread of the fungus, however, information on cavers’ knowledge of WNS and their caving and biosecurity habits is lacking. An anonymous qualitative survey was completed by delegates ( n = 134) from 23 countries at an international speleological conference in Sydney, Australia. Cavers indicated that they visit caves frequently (80.6% at least bimonthly), including outside of their own country, but 20.3% of respondents did not know about WNS prior …

The Easternmost European Palaeolithic Artists: Iconography And Graphic Features At Kapova Cave (Southern Urals, Russia), Aitor Ruiz-Redondo, Katherin Yanovskaya, Vladislav S. Zhitenev

KIP Articles

Palaeolithic rock art is one of the most distinctive cultural traits of Upper Palaeolithic societies in Europe. Traditionally restricted to South-western Europe, especially to the Franco-Cantabrian province, in recent years, the geographic distribution of this phenomenon has noticeably expanded. Several years before these discoveries, the first decorated site found beyond southern Europe was Kapova cave, in Russia. This site, at the edge of the distribution area of European Palaeolithic art and far away from other cave sanctuaries, is key to define and understand potential long-distance cultural networks during the Upper Palaeolithic. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive inventory …

Unhinging The Machismo Binary Through A Third Space Lens: Reframing Latinx Males Postsecondary Academic Decision-Making, Matthew A. Witenstein, Alejandro Cervantes Dec 2020

Unhinging The Machismo Binary Through A Third Space Lens: Reframing Latinx Males Postsecondary Academic Decision-Making, Matthew A. Witenstein, Alejandro Cervantes

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This critical and conceptual analysis problematizes the machismo binary and situates it in a third space framework. It explores Latinx males’ higher education experiences and how machismo influences academic decision-making. Situating Latinx males’ college-going in the third space provides a more nuanced portrayal of their academic decision-making across diverse postsecondary settings. In doing so, the Latinx Gender Identity Development Model for Latinx Males in the Third Space is proposed and connects machismo with other domains such as marianismo, caballerismo and familismo. The proposed framework is illustrated by applying it to Latinx males across critical dimensions that impact their decision-making in …

Pathology, East Africa

Staphylococcus aureus has maintained its clinical relevance as a major cause of hospital and community acquired infections globally with a high burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Though reported, the burden of infection, antimicrobial resistance and molecular epidemiology of S. aureus are not well defined in Kenya. This descriptive review evaluated reported data on the detection and characterization of S. aureus infections in Kenya. Published data between 2000 and 2020 were evaluated. S. aureus isolation frequencies varied from 1% in blood specimens to 52.6% among skin and soft tissues infections while MRSA rates ranged from 1% to 84.1%. While penicillin resistance …

Identifier names are the atoms of program comprehension. Weak identifier names decrease developer productivity and degrade the performance of automated approaches that leverage identifier names in source code analysis; threatening many of the advantages which stand to be gained from advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Therefore, it is vital to support developers in naming and renaming identifiers. In this paper, we extend our prior work, which studies the primary method through which names evolve: rename refactorings. In our prior work, we contextualize rename changes by examining commit messages and other refactorings. In this extension, we further consider data …

Proportional Voting Based Semi-Unsupervised Machine Learning Intrusion Detection System, Yang G. Kim, Ohbong Kwon, John Yoon Dec 2020

Proportional Voting Based Semi-Unsupervised Machine Learning Intrusion Detection System, Yang G. Kim, Ohbong Kwon, John Yoon

Publications and Research

Feature selection of NSL-KDD data set is usually done by finding co-relationships among features, irrespective of target prediction. We aim to determine the relationship between features and target goals to facilitate different target detection goals regardless of the correlated feature selection. The unbalanced data structure in NSL-KDD data can be relaxed by Proportional Representation (PR). However, adopting PR would deny the notion of winner-take-all by attracting a majority of the vote and also provide a fairly proportional share for any grouping of like-minded data. Furthermore, minorities and majorities would get a fair share of power and representation in data structure …

Diminishing And Preventing Homelessness: A Managerial Audit Of Santa Clara County Nonprofit Organizations Addressing Homelessness, Sergio J. Gonzalez Dec 2020

Diminishing And Preventing Homelessness: A Managerial Audit Of Santa Clara County Nonprofit Organizations Addressing Homelessness, Sergio J. Gonzalez

Master's Projects

While the problem of homelessness intensifies in the United States, the search for solutions becomes increasingly crucial. As the number of homeless people in Santa Clara County, California continues to surge, various sections of government and nonprofit organizations have intensified their search for ways to reduce the problem. There have been many proposed ideas for a solution, such as policy options and emergency measures to address local crises. For example, the city of San Jose, California, has opened a “bridged housing” community, allocating 80 tiny homes with beds, a desk, and air conditioning in two locations to serve as temporary …

Who, What, Why & How: Reimagining State Constitutional Analysis In School Finance Litigation, William Thro Dec 2020

Who, What, Why & How: Reimagining State Constitutional Analysis In School Finance Litigation, William Thro

BYU Education & Law Journal

Despite the Supreme Court’s recognition of the importance of public education, America’s public schools remain ravaged by “savage inequalities”which lead to failure of the public schools.Because every State, except Hawaii, partially finances local public schools through local property taxes and because there are differences in the value of real property, there are vast disparities in available funding for local school districts. While every State Constitution requires the State Legislature to establish a public school system and while the State Legislatures have enacted a variety of statutes in an attempt to meet the state constitutional obligations, virtually every State has seen …

Using Agile Methodology To Create A Working Software Application, Aaron Cuadras

Honors Theses

This thesis explains the importance of Agile in the process of writing a web application. A team of three developers worked for sixteen weeks to create a booking site able to hold important information related to customers and hotel owners. The framework used for the project is Ruby on Rails and we stress the importance of the Models-View-Controller pattern and its relation with the Agile methodology, the problem of creating a new application is the pace in which everything should be written as well as the ability to write features independent from one another. The results that we expect are …

Kin Ties And The Performance Of New Firms: A Structural Approach, Gokhan Ertug, Reddi Kotha, Peter Hedstrom Dec 2020

Kin Ties And The Performance Of New Firms: A Structural Approach, Gokhan Ertug, Reddi Kotha, Peter Hedstrom

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Kin ties are all but ubiquitous in new firms. However, their effects on performance are not straightforward, because they may provide new firms with advantages (enhanced coordination and cooperation) as well as disadvantages (reduced diversity, nepotism concerns, and the possible spillover of personal conflict). As kin ties may have both positive and negative implications for performance, a contingency approach to the performance of new firms is valuable. We develop such an approach by relating different structural configurations of kin ties – whether they are between founders, between founders and employees, and between employees – to the performance of new firms. …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many organizational representatives review social media (SM) information (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) when recruiting and assessing job applicants. Despite this, very little empirical data exist concerning the SM information available to organizations or whether assessments of such information are a valid predictor of work outcomes. This multi-study investigation examines several critical issues in this emerging area. In Study 1, we conducted a content analysis of job seekers’ Facebook sites (n = 266) and found that these sites often provide demographic variables that U.S. employment laws typically prohibit organizations from using when making personnel decisions (e.g., age, ethnicity, religion), as well as …
