JADARA
Despite the creation and implementation of laws intended to support and protect Deaf individuals, stories of limited opportunities and oppression within the workplace still exist and are pervasive. Current research in regard to Deaf individuals’ upward mobility includes a discussion of cultural capital, Imposter Syndrome, and navigational capital. To further understand the experiences of Deaf individuals, the research team conducted a mixed-methods study utilizing surveys and interviews. The results provided insight regarding challenges experienced by the participants in either-or-both their education and employment. The data suggests that the use of navigational capital was the most significant predictor for upward mobility.
Apollo And Columbia: Landscape As Power In Washington D.C. And Versailles., Beau Cameron Burris
Apollo And Columbia: Landscape As Power In Washington D.C. And Versailles., Beau Cameron Burris
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
The grounds of the Palace of Versailles and the urban fabric of Washington, D.C. are monumentally scaled, richly mythologized landscapes of power. Through massive baroque geometries, both sites impress order on the vastness of space, reframing it for the glory of their respective creators. Within these grand spaces, symbolism and iconography provide narratives of conquest, violence, glory, and fear. Stories of seemingly immortal men emerge from classical traditions of architecture and sculpture. Louis XIV and the presidents and war heroes of the United States have become god-heroes in bronze and stone, presiding over palatial grounds and public space as if …

Objectively Determining The Language-Related Communication Challenges For In-Flight Operations, Fehime Utkan
Objectively Determining The Language-Related Communication Challenges For In-Flight Operations, Fehime Utkan
Dissertations
Communication breakdowns between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCs) have been identified as primary factors in fatal airplane accidents (Wu et. al., 2019; Bauh & Stolzer, 2018; Ritter, 1996; Eurocontrol, 2011). Although there are various aspects that have affected communication efficiency, language-related issues have been mostly associated with transmissions involved in serious incidents, especially in multicultural flight environments (Sexton & Helmrich, 2000). More than 2,000 people have died in accidents where miscommunication was a primary factor (Bauh & Stolzer, 2018; Patty, 2016). By the year of 2025, the air transportation system is projected to become more complex, and the volume …

An Investigation Of Processes Linking Patient-Centered Communication Approaches To Favorable Impressions Of Vietnamese Physicians And Hospital Services, Christopher Mckinley, Yam Limbu, Long Pham
College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
Strong doctor-patient relationships generate greater patient satisfaction and compliance with physician recommendations. Although prior research has explored distinct factors driving favorable patient outcomes, investigations have yet to comprehensively address the efficacy of different communication styles. Furthermore, it is critical to explore the full impact communication approaches have on perceptions of medical services. This investigation addressed two patient-centered communication approaches – empathy and nonverbal immediacy – as antecedents to Vietnamese patients’ impressions of physicians and hospital services. Results showed that these two factors were powerful, independent predictors of satisfaction and trust. Conversely, patient participation was a less robust predictor of judgments …

Ergonomics Modelling And Evaluation Of Automobile Seat Comfort, Prithvi Tilwani
Ergonomics Modelling And Evaluation Of Automobile Seat Comfort, Prithvi Tilwani
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
The driver’s seat is a vital element in any car, but it is also a sophisticated system with several parts, adjustments, and safety features. A poorly built driving seat has an impact on the driver’s health and mental state. The three important goals for any driver seat are the safety of the driver, comfort, and health. Despite the availability of several technologies, the car seating sector has had little success in quantifying comfort. Iteration’s time and cost may be justified if the procedure was assured to result in a comfortable seat. This study emphasizes the value of using the overall …

When Are You Going To Catch Up With Me? Shu Lea Cheang With Alexandra Juhasz, Alexandra Juhasz
Publications and Research
“Digital nomad” Shu Lea Cheang and friend and critic Alexandra Juhasz consider the reasons for and implications of the censorship of Cheang’s 2017 film FLUIDØ, particularly as it connects to their shared concerns in AIDS activism, feminism, pornography, and queer media. They consider changing norms, politics, and film practices in relation to technology and the body. They debate how we might know, and what we might need, from feminist-queer pornography given feminist-queer engagements with our bodies and ever more common cyborgian existences. Their informal chat opens a window onto the interconnections and adaptations that live between friends, sex, technology, …

The spread of hate speech is one of the major issues that social media platforms, like Twitter, have been facing as digital activism becomes more common. The spread of hate speech is often facilitated by the existence of echo chambers. To gain a better understanding of the type of users that engage in hate speech, tweets related to the Black Lives Matter movement were studied. Tweets that were for and against the Black Lives Matter movement were collected and labeled as hate, counter-hate, and natural. The followers and friends of the selected users of each type were then examined to …
The Effect Of Cyanobacteria On Transgenerational Responses In Daphnia Pulicaria, Olivia Williams
The Effect Of Cyanobacteria On Transgenerational Responses In Daphnia Pulicaria, Olivia Williams
2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
'Transgenerational plasticity' occurs when environmental cues alter the expression of traits in offspring and future generations. This experiment examined the influence of low-quality cyanobacteria (Anabaena) on across-generation responses in a common water flea (Daphnia pulicaria) to quantify whether changes in food quality from dietary cyanobacteria can induce transgenerational effects. Three Daphnia clones from Lake Mendota (WI) were maintained at 14C, 16:10 photoperiod until the third laboratory generation; animals from each clonal line were then reared for multiple generations on diets that contained varying amounts of cyanobacteria (either 100% Scenedesmus or 70% Scenedesmus, 30% Anabaena). General linear models and a posthoc …

Analysis Of Patterns Of Gene Expession With-In Species And Between Species Of Daphnia, Jenny Phan
2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Hybridization in the freshwater microcrustacean Daphnia occurs naturally and the interspecific hybrids have been found between several species, occupying many diverse types of freshwater habitats (e.g., lakes and ponds). A comparative analysis of gene expression from crosses of varied species of Daphnia is a powerful way to identify the evolutionary divergence of the genetic elements controlling the expression of genes. In this study, multiple within-species and between-species crossing experiments are performed. We then sequenced the transcriptomes of the obtained interspecific juvenile hybrids and to contrast the patterns of within-species gene expression divergence with between-species divergence. Transcriptomes were compared at 50 …

Polydiacetylene (PDA) is a polymer class consisting of double and triple bonds and is formed when diacetylene amphiphiles become closely packed and undergo UV polymerization. When properly designed, PDA forms vesicles, which, when stimulated, give a colorimetric change due to rotation of the ene-yne alternating backbone. PDA-based vesicles in which the pendant side-chains possess a recognition moiety for a target of interest have thus been implemented as biosensors for the successful detection of different biomolecules. Here we report a means for rapidly generating a PDA-based biosensor by direct solid-phase peptide synthesis of a peptide recognition moiety appended with 10,12 pentacosadiynoic …

A common problem is the keeping track of products in our kitchen/pantry. This work aims to tackle that problem by providing an inventory for these products and our team’s focus has been on beer. We developed an android application which uses an in-built barcode scanner (through the phone’s camera) which detects the barcode number of a beer scanned. The application sends this data to the database which searches the beer dataset for the information associated with this number. This process automates the way users can add and remove inventory. Lastly, users add an expiry date associated with the beer to …

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Satellite signals are an efficient means of receiving data in remote environments. By monitoring satellite signals, a device can be controlled in remote locations, long range communications intercepted, and local sensory data collected. It is possible to utilize a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) that can sample the electromagnetic spectrum and use code to demodulate instead of a typical hardware-defined radio, allowing for a compact, scalable system. This project will use a BeagleBone Black as the controller and the HackRF One for the SDR. Due to variance in modulation types, modulation methods, sample limitations of the HackRF One, and frequency fall off, …

Determining The Role Of Low Molecular Weight Penicillin-Binding Proteins In Carbapenem Tolenerance In Aceinetobacter, Hana Ali
2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Antimicrobial resistance is a rapidly increasing threat to public health, where pathogens are no longer susceptible to antimicrobials prescribed to fight infections. Carbapenems are last-resort antimicrobials that bind penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibit cell wall biogenesis, leading to death. Specifically, the pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) demonstrated carbapenem tolerance, or the ability of bacteria to survive in the toxic concentrations without changing the minimal inhibitory concentration. These data represent the first study to understand carbapenem tolerance in Ab. Here, we investigated the physiological significance of low molecular weight (LMW) PBPs, which have not been extensively studied in bacteria and could represent …
