Effect Of Fluid Resuscitation In Patients With Esrd And Sepsis Or Septic Shock: An Integrative Review, Luke Eady Dec 2020

Effect Of Fluid Resuscitation In Patients With Esrd And Sepsis Or Septic Shock: An Integrative Review, Luke Eady

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

In patients with ESRD, clinicians are tentative to initiate fluid resuscitation given the chance of negative outcomes associated with fluid overload. Given this, many ESRD patients with sepsis are severely under-resuscitated with fluids and experience a delay in receiving antibiotics (Abou Dagher et al. 2015). There is also controversy surrounding the type of fluid that should be used with patients with ESRD. The mainstay fluid for treatment is 0.9% sodium chloride solution (normal saline). Patient studies have found that this fluid could be harmful to the kidneys and should not be administered in patients with kidney disease (Rochwerg et al. …

Negative Emotions In Fieldwork: A Narrative Inquiry Of Three Efl Researchers’ Lived Experiences, Adilur Rahaman, Shuvo Saha

The Qualitative Report

Through narrative inquiry this research depicts and interprets the negative emotions that three English as Foreign Language (EFL) researchers experienced in different research sites during their fieldwork. Narrative inquiry informs the design of this investigation as the approach is particularly useful for understanding lived experiences. The study draws on autobiographical as well as narrative data to report the negative emotions that evolve during English language education fieldwork, an aspect absent in the existing literature. Findings suggest that the researchers experienced a wide range of negative emotions namely ethical dilemma, anger, anxiety, guilt, and shame. These results carry implications for language …

In this article we present an account of one Roma woman’s journey from hiding her identity to celebrating it. We expose five critical incidents that challenge and mould her sense of identity and career aspiration, with insights into her hopes and dreams as she reflects upon the barriers she faces and attempts to …

Local Offenses, Brenner M. Fissell Dec 2020

Local Offenses, Brenner M. Fissell

Faculty Publications

Criminal law is generally thought to exist within two jurisdictional levels: federal and state. Neglected in the legal mind, and in legal scholarship, is the vast body of criminal law promulgated by local governments. While one should ask “what” is being criminalized by cities, towns, and villages, one should also ask “how” these offenses are written. The offense-drafting practices reflected in state criminal law have been extensively studied, but this has never been attempted for local offenses. This Article undertakes that task. After surveying a large number of local criminal codes, this Article concludes that local offenses routinely fail to …

[2020 Winner] The Power Of Guinaiya: The Intersections Of Love And Resistance Through The Native Chamoru Voice, Emily Mcmath

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

Over the last three centuries, the indigenous Chamoru people of Guåhan have endured several accounts of foreign colonization. Through time and physical space, native Chamorus have witnessed environmental destruction of precious ancestral land, a loss of deeply rooted cultural traditions and language, and blatant disrespect for an island and its people by the U.S. military. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Department of Defense has made their point clear: Guåhan is a military vessel first and foremost and the future of the island lies within the hands of the U.S. government. Though Guåhan might be small in …

Building Excitement For Reading And Building New Friendships: Using Book Bistro With Pre-Service Teachers And Middle School Students, Erinn Bentley

Georgia Journal of Literacy

This article describes a collaborative Book Bistro event between middle school students and pre-service English educators. Book Bistro is a strategy that promotes independent reading by gathering students in a café-like setting to discuss texts and perceptions through casual conversations. The purpose of this collaborative Bistro was two-fold: 1) To spark middle school students’ interest in self-selecting texts and engaging in independent reading, and 2) To allow pre-service teachers the opportunity to practice this strategy within an actual classroom. Responses from both the students and pre-service teachers indicated that this event positively impacted their interest toward reading and their relationships …

The Reverend James Seymour, S.P.G., Missionary In Florida, Edgar Legare Pennington

Florida Historical Quarterly

When the Floridas became English territory, in 1763, there was the characteristic effort to reproduce in the new province whatever the mother country deemed essential. In less than a year Anglican missionaries were on the ground; and we find a record of nine clergymen “licensed to the plantations by the Bishops of London from the year 1745 inclusive”.

John Quincy Adams And Florida, Frederick Cubberly

Florida Historical Quarterly

It has been said that the defiant patriotism of John Quincy Adams secured to the United States possession of Florida. It settled, after years of controversy, the long standing differences between Spain and this country. The student of history who takes the trouble to search for details of the many transactions and negotiations that resulted in the Florida provinces coming under the American flag will find that the skillful diplomacy of Adams resulted in settling for all time the sovereignty of Spain on the North American Continent.

The Growth Of Florida's Election Laws, James Owen Knauss Dec 2020

The Growth Of Florida's Election Laws, James Owen Knauss

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the neglected phases of American history is the development of election laws in the different states. Several monographs have been written showing the evolution and progress of certain reforms, such as the introduction of the Australian ballot, in the country as a whole, but these are usually not explicit and often not reliable regarding the subject in individual states. Articles and monographs on elections in each state are needed. It is entirely true that to obtain an accurate view of this subject the final monograph must contain a survey of the record of development in all states, but …

The Nine Old Wooden Forts Of St. Augustine, Part Ii, Jeannette Thurber Conner Dec 2020

The Nine Old Wooden Forts Of St. Augustine, Part Ii, Jeannette Thurber Conner

Florida Historical Quarterly

After Drake burned the fort at St. Augustine in 1586, the settlers gave the name of San Marcos to the wooden building which took its place - Fort Number Seven. They had long wanted and asked for a fort of stone, and it would seem as if the discovery of coquina by Pedro Menendez Marques, in 1580, should have helped to bring about the realization of their wishes; but always, something came up to prevent it.

The Nine Old Wooden Forts Of St. Augustine, Jeannette Thurber Conner

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida is the fortunate possessor of one of this country’s most interesting monuments of the past - the impressive Spanish fort at St. Augustine. The sketch of its history which the docile traveller hears, as he and other amiable sightseers follow the guide like lambs, seems for the most part colorless, sensational and incomplete.

Florida's Spanish Missions, A. H. Phinney Dec 2020

Florida's Spanish Missions, A. H. Phinney

Florida Historical Quarterly

There were two purposes in the coming of the Spaniards to America. One was the desire for gain; the other the hope of making Christians of the natives. Unfortunately the two conflicted. The fierce desire for gold, that led to the inhuman treatment of the Indians, for a time rendered of no avail the efforts of the priests.

University human resources departments dedicate themselves to providing relevant professional development to their institutions’ employees. However, few of these departments consider the language learning needs of employees who are nonnative English speakers. This paper introduces the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison)’s unique approach to meeting the English language learning needs of employees through its Cultural Linguistic Services (CLS) department within the Office of Human Resources (OHR). The CLS Workplace English Program features the development of contextualized learning materials, active participation of employees’ supervisors, dynamic scheduling, and on-the-job practice with authentic communicative tasks. The collaboration between CLS/OHR and other UW-Madison departments has …

Medical Decision Making Using Knowledge Of Patient Identification As Aboriginal Or Torres Strait Islander: What Do Medical Students Think?, Winnifred Knight, Michael J. Platow, Diana M. Grace, Oliver Tye, Jess Styles

Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin

Objective

Best-practices guidelines require Australian health practitioners to ask all patients “are you [is the person] of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin?”. The present study investigated medical student attitudes regarding medical decisions made after asking this standard status question.

Methods

A hypothetical interaction between a doctor and an Aboriginal patient was presented in a pen-and-paper questionnaire in which: (1) the doctor considered (or did not consider) the patient’s Indigenous status relevant to make a medical diagnosis, and (2) the doctor registered (or did not register) the patient for the Closing the Gap PBS co-payment. Participants were first- and second-year …
