Pluriversal Design And Desire-Based Design: Desire As The Impulse For Human Flourishing, Renata Marques Leitão Jun 2020

Pluriversal Design And Desire-Based Design: Desire As The Impulse For Human Flourishing, Renata Marques Leitão

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

A world of many centers is a world where multiple worlds can flourish—where communities outside of the Center can design their own life projects, which reflect who they are, what they value, and who their ancestors had been. This paper argues that a Pluriversal Design—which aims to nurture alternative models of life and ways of world- making—is necessarily desire-based, in contrast with conventional needs-based approaches. I make a case for Social Design researchers and practitioners to hone our craft to respond primarily to the communities' desire, in contrast with the current focus on their needs, problems and deficits. I argue …

Transforming Through Imaginations Of Otherness, Laura Popplow Jun 2020

Transforming Through Imaginations Of Otherness, Laura Popplow

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

In this extended abstract I will draw on my experimental participatory design experiments and develop a proposal for a decentred design role in transformation processes: the imagination of Otherness. This concept is inspired by the political thinking of Deleuze and Guattari and offers an alternative to the dichotomy majority vs. minority and, as I propose, an alternative thinking model for political participation through design. It offers a way of thinking design as engaged in and across multiple world makings – and not to think design as an universal tool to engage marginalized minorities. I will outline my experience working with …

Application Of Optimization And Simulation To Musical Composition That Emerges Dynamically During Ensemble Singing Performance, A Kirke, Gb Davies, J Eaton Jun 2020

Application Of Optimization And Simulation To Musical Composition That Emerges Dynamically During Ensemble Singing Performance, A Kirke, Gb Davies, J Eaton

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper presents and tests a new approach to composing for ensemble singing performance: reality opera. In the performance of such a composition, emotions of the singers are real and emerge as a consequence of their interactions and reaction and to a dynamic narrative. This paper gives background and motivation for the form, based on three key concepts, incorporating the use of technology. Then proposed techniques for creating reality opera are instantiated in an example, which is performed and a behavioral analysis done of performer reactions, leading to support for the feasibility of the reality opera concept.

Of Experts And Tokens: Mapping A Critical Race Archaeology Of Communication, Roopali Mukherjee Jun 2020

Of Experts And Tokens: Mapping A Critical Race Archaeology Of Communication, Roopali Mukherjee

Publications and Research

A disgraceful white boys’ club persists within the field of Communication. Engaging key institutional structures and epistemic formations through which the field remains so white, this essay considers the mechanisms by which critical race and gender scholars are positioned as eternally foreign, always just arriving, to the field of communication. Addressing the implications of these “epistemologies of ignorance” on the development of the discipline, this essay outlines an intellectual and institutional archeology of Communication to reveal, instead, a field marked and shaped, from the start, by ethno-racial encounter. Communication, I suggest, remains so white because its experts and leaders continue …

The Pre-Columbian Textile Collection Of The German Textile Museum Krefeld, Katalin Nagy Jun 2020

The Pre-Columbian Textile Collection Of The German Textile Museum Krefeld, Katalin Nagy

PreColumbian Textile Conference VIII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VIII (2019)

The German Textile Museum in Krefeld houses a considerable collection of pre-Columbian textiles. Most originate from graves in the narrow arid area of the Peruvian coast. The original aim was to build an assemblage with the pedagogical and methodological intention of presenting a broad range of very different textile techniques in the education for the future textile workers of the industry in said region. With this intention in mind samples were gathered, and soon a few samples turned into an impressive collection in which almost all established pre-Columbian cultures and periods of the area of the Central Andes are represented. …

The Meanings And Ways Of Parental Involvement Among Low-Income Filipinos, Aileen S. Garcia, Maria Rosario De Guzman Jun 2020

The Meanings And Ways Of Parental Involvement Among Low-Income Filipinos, Aileen S. Garcia, Maria Rosario De Guzman

Counseling and Human Development Faculty Publications

Parental involvement in children's education is an integral component of young children's academic achievement. Although there is clear evidence regarding the benefits of parental involvement, little is known regarding its impacts, manifestations, and conceptualizations in non-Western societies. Given that parenting and child rearing are imbued with cultural meaning in many profound ways (Super & Harkness, 1986), this study employed a phenomenological approach and used pakikipagkwentuhan, a data collection procedure drawn from indigenous Filipino Psychology to closely examine how low-income Filipino parents conceptualize parental involvement and its role in their children's education. Thirty-one parents/caregivers were engaged in conversation and qualitative …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The Amphistegina Bleaching Index (ABI) was applied to three Maldivian reefs in the Rasdhoo and North Ari Atolls in 2018, during normal sea surface temperature conditions. This dataset was then compared with a 2015, pre-coral bleaching study. The results provide a context for the verification and application of the ABI in outlining the photo-inhibitory stress status of coral reefs outside of the Florida Reef Tract where it was originally developed. The sampling periods encompass different seasons and temperature regimes. The 2015 field sampling preceeded the El Niño induced, mass coral-bleaching events of 2015 and 2016. It was carried out in …

Psychology Faculty Research

Background Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) is included in the eleventh edition of The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an impulse-control disorder. AimsThe aim of the present work was to develop a scale (Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale–CSBD-19) that can reliably and validly assess CSBD based on ICD-11 diagnostic guidelines. Method Four independent samples of 9,325 individuals completed self-reported measures from three countries (the United States, Hungary, and Germany). The psychometric properties of the CSBD-19 were examined in terms of factor structure, reliability, measurement invariance, and theoretically relevant correlates. A potential threshold was determined to identify individuals with an …

Too Important To Fail: The Banking Concept Of Education And Standardized Testing In An Urban Middle School, Eric Ruiz Bybee Jun 2020

Too Important To Fail: The Banking Concept Of Education And Standardized Testing In An Urban Middle School, Eric Ruiz Bybee

Faculty Publications

Paulo Freire’s influential concept of “banking” education describes an oppressive process that positions teachers as the “depositors” of knowledge into passive student “receptacles.” However, according to Freire, teachers also have an “ontological vocation to be more fully human” that can only be achieved through freedom from oppression. In this article, I use Freire’s concept of banking education to reflect on my experiences giving standardized tests during my final year teaching at a high-need middle school in New York City. Drawing from narrative inquiry methodology, I bring these teaching/ testing experiences into conversation with the sociopolitical discourse on banks and argue …

Ashes To Caches: Is Dust Dust Among The Heterarchichal Maya?, Marshall Joseph Becker Jun 2020

Ashes To Caches: Is Dust Dust Among The Heterarchichal Maya?, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Caches and burials, or specially placed deposits of all types, among the Classic Period lowland Maya represent the material remains of religious or ritual behaviors. These behaviors are shared by people of all economic levels but expanded according to available economic resources. Discussions of these aspects of material culture commonly focus on elite or upscale examples found within various contexts. At Tikal, as at other Lowland Maya sites, the expression of these rituals varied by the wealth of the participants. Elite offerings involved greater quantities of precious and durable goods such as jade, marine shell, and elaborate lithic items. [FIGURE …

Neuroinflammatory Gene Expression Alterations In Anterior Cingulate Cortical White And Gray Matter Of Males With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Aubrey N. Sciara, Brooke Beasley, Jessica D. Crawford, Emma P. Anderson, Tiffani Carrasco, Shimin Zheng, Gregory A. Ordway, Michelle J. Chandley

ETSU Faculty Works

Evidence for putative pathophysiological mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including peripheral inflammation, blood–brain barrier disruption, white matter alterations, and abnormal synaptic overgrowth, indicate a possible involvement of neuroinflammation in the disorder. Neuroinflammation plays a role in the development and maintenance of the dendritic spines involved in glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission, and also influences blood–brain permeability. Cytokines released from microglia can impact the length, location or organization of dendritic spines on excitatory and inhibitory cells as well as recruit and impact glial cell function around the neurons. In this study, gene expression levels of anti- and pro-inflammatory signaling molecules, as …

A Study Of The Anthropogenic Impact In Farmington Bay Through Isotopic And Elemental Analysis, Nathan Vaun Gunnell Jun 2020

A Study Of The Anthropogenic Impact In Farmington Bay Through Isotopic And Elemental Analysis, Nathan Vaun Gunnell

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of human activity on surrounding environments is an important field of research. With respect to aquatic settings, lacustrine deposits provide excellent proxies of environmental change since the sediment accumulates at a relatively constant rate, recording environmental change. This study employs isotopic, mineral, and chemical records from Farmington Bay freeze cores, in particular δ13C, δ15N, and 210Pb isotopes as well as phosphorus level fluctuation and trace metal analysis. In particular, 210Pb isotopes permit estimation of the age of sediment with depth and δ15N, δ13C, and concentration of P provides a record of changing nutrient sources and level of eutrophication. …

Through Astronaut Eyes: Photographing Early Human Spaceflight, Jennifer K. Levasseur Jun 2020

Through Astronaut Eyes: Photographing Early Human Spaceflight, Jennifer K. Levasseur

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Featuring over seventy images from the heroic age of space exploration, Through Astronaut Eyes presents the story of how human daring along with technological ingenuity allowed people to see the Earth and stars as they never had before.

Photographs from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs tell powerful and compelling stories that continue to have cultural resonance to this day, not just for what they revealed about the spaceflight experience, but also as products of a larger visual rhetoric of exploration. The photographs tell us as much about space and the astronauts who took them as their reception within an …

Integrative Environmental Law: A Prescription For Law In The Time Of Climate Change, Alyson C. Flournoy Jun 2020

Integrative Environmental Law: A Prescription For Law In The Time Of Climate Change, Alyson C. Flournoy

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

As the magnitude of the threat posed by climate change has become increasingly apparent, scholars and practitioners have begun a dialogue about how to reform environmental law to meet the challenge. Concepts like adaptive management, sustainability, and resilience have emerged in succession, as policy makers and scholars search for new moorings for our ethical and legal framework. While useful, these concepts have failed to provide a vision, goal, or solid ethical grounding for environmental law in the era of climate change.

This project takes a new approach by exploring what we can learn from the field of Integrative Medicine. The …

Latinas account for one in five women in the United States, and by 2060 Latinas will likely make up one-third of the nation’s females. Education is the foundation for both personal and economic well-being, especially as the job market continues to demand higher levels of educational attainment. The Latinx population continues to make up a large portion of the workforce. Latinas’ attendance and admission rates at the graduate level are low. Studies have found that Latinas have obtained the lowest percentage of graduate degrees compared to …

Communication Competence Training Within Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Shirleena Racine Baggett Jun 2020

Communication Competence Training Within Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Shirleena Racine Baggett

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Business ownership is imperative in correcting economic issues for demographic groups subjugated to discrimination, inequality, poverty, and other harmful disadvantages. This project supports the idea that building communication competence within minority-owned small businesses and nonprofit organizations, will significantly increase achievement of long-term sustainability and success. The solution is not only creating communication training tailored for minority entrepreneurs, but to allow access in feasible and tangible ways. This study begins by defining communication and explaining its function to assist in moving past the narrative of communication interaction as “talking and listening,” but instead a concept rooted in logic, theoretical analysis, and …

Reporting On Suicide: A Thematic Discourse Analysis On Discourses Regarding Suicide In 2010s Hip-Hop Songs, Andy Allen Acosta Jr. Jun 2020

Reporting On Suicide: A Thematic Discourse Analysis On Discourses Regarding Suicide In 2010s Hip-Hop Songs, Andy Allen Acosta Jr.

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Society's conventions of suicide make death by suicide become symbolic annihilation (Gerbner & Signorielli, 1979; Gerbner & Gross, 1976; Tuchman, 1979) by placing a taboo and stigmatization on the practice of suicide. That limits the discourses regarding suicide (DRS), which creates these differences that are normative, subordinate, and excluded discourses of suicide. Public health institutions seek to control DRS and restrict the experiences of suicide. For instance, the World Health Organization’s Reporting for Suicide guidelines contains recommendations on how to report suicide within media that restrict public discourses of suicide (Reporting on Suicide, n.d.-a). In the 2010s, suicide-themed songs also …

“Real Me Versus Social Media Me:” Filters, Snapchat Dysmorphia, And Beauty Perceptions Among Young Women, Janella Eshiet

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat are visual-based social media platforms that are popular among young women. One popular content many young women use on Snapchat and Instagram are beauty filters. A beauty filter is a photo-editing tool that allows users to smooth out their skin, enhance their lips and eyes, contour their nose, alter their jawline and cheekbones, etc. Due to these beauty filters, young women are now seeking plastic surgeons to alter their appearance to look just like their filtered photos (this trend is called Snapchat dysmorphia). This research study examines how these beauty filters and …

Depressed & Dis-Eased: Storytelling, Melancholia And The Rhetorical Affordances Of Affect, Carlee Franklin Jun 2020

Depressed & Dis-Eased: Storytelling, Melancholia And The Rhetorical Affordances Of Affect, Carlee Franklin

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Because racial oppression is often internalized, this thesis examines literature written by POC about protagonists of color struggling with depression. The pieces are Gwendolyn Brooks’ Maud Martha, Haruki Murakami’s “Tony Takitani,” and Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Using literary concepts informed by Black feminist theory, decolonial theory, and affect studies, as well as rhetorical frameworks of silence and listening, this thesis attempts to better understand how the relationship between depression and racial oppression work to color the life expectancy and perspectives of depressed people of color
