Culture, Language And Emotion, Alexandra S. Dylman, Marie-France Champoux-Larsson, Ingrid Zakrisson
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Culture, language and emotion all influence and affect our daily lives in their own manner. Although there is a large body of research suggesting that these factors interact with each other in intricate ways, they have traditionally been studied independently of each other. Furthermore, although biculturalism and bilingualism are not new phenomena, they are now prevalent globally to the extent that research investigating culture or language cannot be complete without taking them into account. Thus, in this paper, we discuss how culture, language and emotion may mutually influence one another in a globalized world where biculturalism and bilingualism are commonplace …
Reproducing The New Negro: James Van Der Zee’S Photographic Vision In Newsprint, Emilie C. Boone
Reproducing The New Negro: James Van Der Zee’S Photographic Vision In Newsprint, Emilie C. Boone
Publications and Research
In the summer of 1924, as a departure from his concentration on portraits in his Harlem studio, James Van Der Zee served as the official photographer for the Pan-Africanist leader Marcus Garvey and his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Many of the resulting photographs were published in the organization’s popular, internationally distributed newspaper, the Negro World. The newsprint medium in which the UNIA photographs appeared in reproduction, along with their editorial arrangement on the page, animated a different photographic vision from that of the gelatin silver print studio portraits often celebrated as Van Der Zee’s defining contribution …
Beauty Is Not Black And White: A Content Analysis Of Black Women’S Body Image In Television Media, Alexis Hubbard
Beauty Is Not Black And White: A Content Analysis Of Black Women’S Body Image In Television Media, Alexis Hubbard
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are few bodies of literature that look at Black women’s body image in television media. When Black women were studied most research (Falconer & Neville, 2000; Jhally & Kilbourne, 2010; Smith, 2014; Shearon-Richardson, 2011;) compared them to White ideals. However, this study did a content analysis of Black women in predominantly Black or ethnically diverse television shows using qualitative studies that suggest a Black ideal. The researcher examined lead character(s) body shapes, comments about their body, hair texture and comments about their hair. This research looked at protective factors (aspects Black life that allow for more body satisfaction) like …

New Flesh Cinema: Japanese Cyberpunk-Body Horror And Cinema As Catharsis In The Age Of Technology, Sarah Henry
New Flesh Cinema: Japanese Cyberpunk-Body Horror And Cinema As Catharsis In The Age Of Technology, Sarah Henry
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a critical analysis of a specific group of films that combine the subgenres of cyberpunk and body horror which I call New Flesh Cinema. Films of this subgenre counter fears and anxieties of technological advancements by re-imagining the rise of technology and its societal effects as a transitional process through the illustration of literal and visceral depictions of the necessary alterations people will have to undergo in order to transition successfully into the new world. To contradict apocalyptic fears of advancing technology, these films offer a vision of a “New Flesh.” I argue the films share three …

Multinational Bibliography On Acculturation (1808-2020), With Url Links To Abstracts Or Full-Text, Joaquim Castro, Floyd W. Rudmin
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Acculturation is an ancient topic of scholarship, with ever more interest and importance as migration increases on a global scale. The pace of scholarship has accelerated in the past few decades, with the result that earlier scholarship tends to be lost and recent scholarship is often unfound. The following bibliography is intended to help remedy these kinds of problems. This 2020 revision of Rudmin’s 2011 bibliography has almost 8,300 references, including much of the acculturation literature written in Portuguese, French, and Spanish.
Social Studies Teachers’ Successes And Challenges In Creating Race-Conscious Curriculum, Emma Nicosia
Social Studies Teachers’ Successes And Challenges In Creating Race-Conscious Curriculum, Emma Nicosia
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the ways that social studies teachers enact racial literacy in order to center race in their curriculum. The study is situated within the existing literature of culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, critical race theory and their applications in social studies education, and racial literacy. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the study is grounded in critical race theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001). Six teachers and two curriculum administrators in a single school district were interviewed. Additionally, participant-observations and analyses of teachers’ curricular materials occurred. In order to analyze the data, I inductively put several theories relating …
Anthropogenic Drivers And Ecological Concepts Of Antimicrobial Resistance, Rachelle E. Beattie
Anthropogenic Drivers And Ecological Concepts Of Antimicrobial Resistance, Rachelle E. Beattie
Dissertations (1934 -)
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a ubiquitous global health issue driven by the overuse and misuse of antimicrobial compounds in healthcare and veterinary medicine. Both natural and built environments have been recognized as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant bacteria, genes, and pathogens but the factors that drive increases in their abundance are not well understood, especially in natural environments. The primary goal of this work is to characterize the ecological drivers of antimicrobial resistance in freshwater ecosystems impacted by intensive livestock farms, known contributors of environmental resistance. Kewaunee County, Wisconsin served as an ideal study site for the investigation of the impact …
Agency And Contemporary Recording Production, Eliot Bates
Agency And Contemporary Recording Production, Eliot Bates
Publications and Research
Recording production is a complex, multistep, typically collaborative process that entails a shifting set of individuals inhabiting changing roles within spaces that house consider able amounts of specialized technology. As these roles and technologies feature promi nently in the aesthetics of Anglophone and Francophone popular music, they have been studied within such milieus for the longest period. This scholarship tends to understand the creative act as either the result of a prominent individual or something determined by the technologies used within studios. However, recent ethnomusicological scholarship has shown it is much more difficult to clearly situate agency within recording production, …
Perspectives On The Intracellular Bacterium Chlamydia Pneumoniae In Late-Onset Dementia, Brian J. Balin Phd
Perspectives On The Intracellular Bacterium Chlamydia Pneumoniae In Late-Onset Dementia, Brian J. Balin Phd
PCOM Scholarly Works
Purpose of Review
Chronic diseases remain a daunting challenge for clinicians and researchers alike. While difficult to completely understand, most chronic diseases, including late-onset dementias, are thought to arise as an interplay between host genetic factors and environmental insults. One of the most diverse and ubiquitous environmental insults centers on infectious agents. Associations of infectious agents with late-onset dementia have taken on heightened importance, including our investigations of infection by the intracellular respiratory bacterium, Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn), in late-onset dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.
Recent Findings
Over the last two decades, the relationship of this infection to pathogenesis …
Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Earthquake Recovery, Sahar Derakhshan
Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Earthquake Recovery, Sahar Derakhshan
Theses and Dissertations
The recovery process after a major disaster or disruption, is impacted by the inequality of risk prior to and post event. In the past decades there has been few efforts to model the recovery process and the focus is mainly on staged models (i.e. emergency, restoration, and reconstruction). The overarching research question asks how a non-stage-like model could apply to the recovery process. This study poses three broad questions: 1) what are the indicators suitable for monitoring the recovery process; 2) what are the driving factors of differential recovery trends; and 3) what are the predicted development trajectories for communities …
Best Practices For Code-Switching In The Hmong Adult Ell Classroom, Morgan Hightower
Best Practices For Code-Switching In The Hmong Adult Ell Classroom, Morgan Hightower
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
For many years, students were discouraged from using their first language. In the classroom, rules were set on only using English as soon as they entered the room, and signs were hung on the walls that encouraged them to only speak the target language. However, research now shows using a student’s native language can actually enhance their learning. This capstone uses pre-surveys, post-surveys, and 4 sessions of professional development to help answer the capstone question, In what ways can educators best support adult Hmong L1 learners to accomplish their English goals while uplifting and valuing their linguistic and cultural roots? …
Developing A Growth Mindset Through Teacher Training, Pedagogy Development, And Community Reform, Kailtyn Joyce
Developing A Growth Mindset Through Teacher Training, Pedagogy Development, And Community Reform, Kailtyn Joyce
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
A consistent problem in teaching has been keeping students engaged and motivated in their studies. Typically these problems were equated to either a student’s inability to make a connection to the information, the material being too difficult, or a student feeling inadequate. To promote a deeper understanding and discover ways to ease these issues, this capstone project used the following question as a focal point, what drives students’ motivation to achieve and what steps can be taken to develop a growth mindset in students? This project was centered around growth mindset as it has shown to be an effective tool …
Designing And Implementing Argumentation Through Digital Platform: A Framework For Beginning 3rd-6th Science, Alexandra Melin
Designing And Implementing Argumentation Through Digital Platform: A Framework For Beginning 3rd-6th Science, Alexandra Melin
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Extensive research in science education has underscored the importance of argumentation and discourse as a critical tool for helping students understand the natural world (NGSS Lead States, 2013). Despite these findings, argumentation is used inconsistently across classrooms due to numerous implementation challenges (e.g., limited teacher training, insufficient resources, classroom management difficulties, unique science language and practices). The design and implementation of science argumentation has been further challenged by the growing proportion of English Language Learning students and the shift to online learning, making clear the need for a framework that included support and adaption to both. To address this need, …
Immigration And Crime In The News, 2014-2018: Do Focusing Events And Policy Windows Affect Framing?, Abigale Rongey
Immigration And Crime In The News, 2014-2018: Do Focusing Events And Policy Windows Affect Framing?, Abigale Rongey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although an abundance of literature demonstrates that immigrant populations are less crime-prone than the native-born population, the majority of Americans believe that immigration inherently threatens the security of the United States. Because Americans are not well versed in the complex issues of immigration and crime, public opinion is undoubtedly influenced by media outlets’ crafted narratives that simplify circumstances and events into easily digestible material. The current study examines how media behavior changes and responds to social and political events by examining “frames” utilized in articles that produce narratives about immigration and crime. Using content analysis of over 1,700 articles published …
The Politics Of Indigeneity And Heritage: Indonesian Mortuary Materials And Museums, Kathleen M. Adams
The Politics Of Indigeneity And Heritage: Indonesian Mortuary Materials And Museums, Kathleen M. Adams
Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article contributes to comparative museology by examining curation practices and politics in several “museum-like” heritage spaces and locally run museums. I argue that, in this era of heritage consciousness, these spaces serve as creative stages for advancing potentially empowering narratives of indigeneity and ethnic authority. Understanding practices in ancestral spaces as “heritage management” both enriches our conception of museums and fosters nuanced understandings of clashes unfolding in these spaces as they become entwined with tourism, heritage commodification, illicit antiquities markets, and UNESCO. Drawing on ethnographic research in Indonesia, I update my earlier work on Toraja (Sulawesi) museum-mindedness and family-run …

Audience Reception Of Hoax Information On Social Media In The Post-Truth Era, Sugeng Bayu Wahyono, Murti Kusuma Wirasti, Barito Mulyo Ratmono
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
This research is an audience reception study of hoax information on social media during the 2019 Presidential Election campaign in the post-truth era. This research uses a qualitative method with a reception study approach and various theories of active audiences such as the encoding-decoding model from Stuart Hall, which was also elaborated by David Morley and Ien Ang. The result shows that there are three typologies in receiving hoax. Those are the pragmatic-creative, ideological, and critical-skeptical type of audiences. The three typologies of the audience have different characters in the reception of hoax information in political communication on social media. …

Perspectives On Undergraduate Research Mentorship: A Comparative Analysis Between Online And Traditional Faculty, Emily K. Faulconer, Zachary Dixon, John Griffith, Laura Faulconer
Publications
With an increase in distance faculty, it is important to understand how faculty perceptions of undergraduate research mentorship differ between distance and traditional faculty. Perceptions were examined in a medium sized, not-for-profit university with both residential and distance faculty. Residential faculty were more likely to mentor or were very interested in undergraduate research, but overall interest in mentorship was similar across campuses. Faculty status or career experience was not correlated to interest or engagement in research mentorship. Traditional faculty were more likely to report time commitment as a significant barrier than distance faculty. Other barriers and benefits were aligned between …
Far-Right Extremism In America: A Geospatial Analysis Of Incident Distribution, Meredith Leann Lerma
Far-Right Extremism In America: A Geospatial Analysis Of Incident Distribution, Meredith Leann Lerma
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There has been little empirical research on the spatial relationship of violent far-right extremism. Previous studies have only focused on portions of far-right violent incidents, such as homicides, or amalgamated all far-right extremist activity, including legal incidents. This study uses data from the Extremist Crime Database (ECDB) and Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in a temporal frame of 2000 to 2018 to test the relationship of violent incidents against geographic and social factors. The goal is to explore the relationships between macro-level factors and violent far-right extremist incident. The research determines that the presence of hate groups, higher immigrant populations, …

Re-Shaped By Mobile Technologies' Disruption: The Videogame Industry In Turkey, Sercan Sengun, Selcen Ozturkcan
Faculty Publications – Creative Technologies
In this study, we investigate the business disruption effects of mobile technologies for the videogame industry in Turkey. Previous research shows that before mobile gaming became prevalent globally, the Turkish videogame industry was extremely small and lacked any success stories for either console or PC platforms. The rise in mobile and the so-called “casual” gaming gave the local industry a competitive advantage on a global scale. To capture the nuances of this disruptive transition, we performed structured interviews with gaming industry experts and analyzed prominent discussion forums for primary and secondary data collections, respectively. We especially focused on answering the …

Viral – Analyzing Those That Create And Consume Content On Youtube And Social Media, Devin King
Theses
Analyzing content that has become viral through intent or by accident shows the cultural norms of society, personal interests of individuals to better themselves, and how platform algorithms in the form of search engine optimization are being used. Viral content commonly uses popular modern trends or can start them but creating outline content can yield the best results. Through creating viral content, this may lead to a platform where information can spread, revenue can be generated from, and ideas can influence new audiences, which can be useful for any corporation or individual.

Repression Of Tick Microrna-133 Induces Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide Expression Critical For Anaplasma Phagocytophilumsurvival In The Vector And Transmission To The Vertebrate Host, Ellango Ramasamy, Vikas Taank, John F. Anderson, Hameeda Sultana, Girish Neelakanta
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The microRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression. In this study, we provide evidence for the first time to show that rickettsial pathogen Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection results in the down-regulation of tick microRNA-133 (miR-133), to induce Ixodes scapularis organic anion transporting polypeptide (isoatp4056) gene expression critical for this bacterial survival in the vector and for its transmission to the vertebrate host. Transfection studies with recombinant constructs containing transcriptional fusions confirmed binding of miR-133 to isoatp4056 mRNA. Treatment with miR-133 inhibitor resulted in increased bacterial burden and isoatp4056 expression in ticks and tick cells. In contrast, treatment with …

Critical Approaches To Digital Video Composition And Media Literacy In Preservice Teacher And High School Contexts: Understanding Students’ Perspectives, Seth D. French
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The first of the following manuscripts explores graduate-level preservice teachers’ responses to a critical digital video project in the context of a Disciplinary Literacies course. This study was particularly interested in the preservice teachers’ obstacles and collaborations they experienced while completing the project, as well as future applications they envisioned for the project in their own classrooms. Findings reveal common obstacles that many preservice teachers experienced throughout the composition process as well as key differences that contributed to some having a more favorable experience with the project than others. The study also identifies insights preservice teachers gained from the critical …
Consumer Food Socialization In The School And Home, Ashley Deutsch Cermin
Consumer Food Socialization In The School And Home, Ashley Deutsch Cermin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consumer socialization literature has focused on individual socialization agents and their isolated effects. However, as John (1999) pointed out, children do not grow up in a social vacuum. Instead, the multitude of agents socializing children find their narratives interacting and their effects continually shaped and co-created. To understand how school-age children learn about food, I interrogate the complexity of socialization in three essays.
In the first essay, I take an ethnographic approach to investigate the interactive effect peers and adults, namely service workers, have on children’s food socialization in a public-school lunchroom. By combining a Loseke’s (2007) layered narrative model …
A Multimodal Study Of The Legitimization Of Violence In Rumiyah / Nazri Mohd Noor, Mohd Noor Nazri
A Multimodal Study Of The Legitimization Of Violence In Rumiyah / Nazri Mohd Noor, Mohd Noor Nazri
Student Works (2020-2029)
This study explored the process of legitimization of violence in Rumiyah magazine produced by al-Hayat Media Center (ISIS). It employs a multimodal approach consists of van Leeuwen (2008) legitimization strategies and Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) visual social semiotics to analyse texts and semiotic resources found in the selected articles. The qualitative method used is an inductive thematic analysis which reveals several thematic categorizations, i.e., (1) the impersonalisation of ‘others’, (2) the legitimization of jihad value, and (3) the (de)legitimization of ‘fasiq’ scholars. The analysis conducted highlights the recurring use of legitimation strategies and visual social semiotic metafunctions to justify …
