Culturally Responsive Teaching For Asian Learners: A Micro-Ethnographic Case Study Of Ela Teachers Within A School Culture, Andy Yen Jan 2020

Culturally Responsive Teaching For Asian Learners: A Micro-Ethnographic Case Study Of Ela Teachers Within A School Culture, Andy Yen

Theses and Dissertations

As student demographics across schools in the United States continue to become increasingly diverse, culture becomes a significant factor for educators. It is inextricably linked to the very fabric of identity in every individual and cannot be overlooked when it comes to student learning. Research into implementation of culturally responsive teaching (CRT) in schools proposes a viable solution and yet, much of the literature has been centered on African American and Hispanic populations, neglecting Asian learners. The purpose of this micro-ethnographic case study was to explore the relationship between school culture and student culture for Asian learners in a suburban …

Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Post Edition - Prologue, Volume 2, Numbers 1-4, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley, Morgan Foister

Con la pluma entre dos mundos

In Volume II, there are 4 issues or journals, three of Latin American literature and one of Advanced Composition (years 2020-2021). This volume has been named “Post” because of its postmodern approach within Hispanic Cultural Studies.

These issues are also of great importance because they respond to the literary, professional, and linguistic work in Spanish produced during the peak of the pandemic, when teaching had to become a synchronous experience through virtual space.

The Survey of Spanish American Literature is part of the core curriculum for the B.A. in Spanish, offered by the Spanish program, at Wright State University. However, …

How Cultural Orientation And Self-Compassion Shape Objectified Body Consciousness For Women From America, Belgium, Russia, And Thailand, Robin Wollast, Abigail R. Riemer, Sarah Gervais, Lusine Grigoryan, Philippe Bernard, Olivier Klein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

According to objectification theory, being treated as an object leads women to engage in self-objectification, which in turn increases body surveillance and body shame, impairing women’s mental health. While most studies focusing on self-objectification rely heavily on Western populations that emphasize individualism, the current work investigates the phenomenon of body surveillance and body shame in a cross-cultural framework, involving a comparison between American, Belgian, Russian, and Thai women (N = 605). This study aims to highlight two predictors – cultural orientation and self-compassion. Results indicate that greater endorsement of vertical individualism is related to body surveillance for American, Belgian, …

Southern California Margin Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages Record Recent Centennial-Scale Changes In Oxygen Minimum Zone, Hannah M. Palmer, Tessa M. Hill, Peter D. Roopnarine, Sarah E. Myhre, Kastherine R. Reyes, Jonas T. Donnenfield

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Student Professional Publications

Microfossil assemblages provide valuable records to investigate variability in continental margin biogeochemical cycles, including dynamics of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Analyses of modern assemblages across environmental gradients are necessary to understand relationships between assemblage characteristics and environmental factors. Five cores were analyzed from the San Diego margin (32∘42′00′′ N, 117∘30′00′′ W; 300–1175 m water depth) for core top benthic foraminiferal assemblages to understand relationships between community assemblages and spatial hydrographic gradients as well as for down-core benthic foraminiferal assemblages to identify changes in the OMZ through time. Comparisons of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from two size fractions (63–150 and >150 …

Service-Learning As Global Citizenship Education: Acting Locally On Global Challenges And Concerns, Genejane M. Adarlo

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Service-learning is a method of teaching that is increasingly used in higher education. Studies are few though on how local placements in service-learning can bring about global citizenship and promote social justice. Hence, this study used multi-sited ethnography to examine the teaching-learning process of service-learning to better understand the construction of civic identity and sense of agency among students when this method of teaching was approached within the larger context of social justice. Study participants included students taking part in service-learning efforts for literacy and maternal health from Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University, respectively. Data were gathered and …

On September 1, 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled for the playing of the national anthem arguing that he was “not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” noting that “this is bigger than football and it would be selfish . . . to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick received a tremendous amount of backlash for this action, and many White fans/media pundits accused him of disrespecting the …

Unlearning Disney: Developing A Feminist Identity While Critiquing Disney Channel Original Movies, Maura Leaden

Honors Program Theses

In this paper, I apply feminist and critical theories through the use of autoethnography and textual analysis to explore how my past consumption of Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOM) has worked to influence my gender identity, reinforce my white, middle-class, and heterosexual privilege, and undermine my agency as a woman. I situate myself as a feminist critical media scholar who is eager to understand my gender identity and move forward with more agency towards my gender expression and consciousness in my media consumption. I am building on the work of other Disney researchers and critical cultural scholars to argue that …

This study evaluated five cases in which an executive esport owner (Riot Games) made rulings regarding activities and infractions by members of various institutions related to its product (League of Legends). The findings of this study support future theoretical exploration of other esports in seeking a fuller understanding of issues related to consent, power differentials, and roles and behaviors expected of the institutional activities of players and teams in competition. We suggest that a consideration of moral rights in the policymaking process is a way to explicitly acknowledge and reward the bond between artist and art, as well as move …

Genomic Justice: The Distribution Of Human Flourishing, Robert Flores

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Genes are functional cell segments of DNA within an organism, as well as basic physical units of biological inheritance, which have consequences for human dignity and public interest. Genes and genetic material (DNA strands of nucleotides, genetically altered plants and animals e.g., see Appendix B) are patentable. In the US and around the globe, governments grant genetic patents for new, non-obvious, and useful gene inventions. A wide range of interest groups such as religious leaders, scientists, biotech pharmaceuticals, medical practitioners, health care providers, venture capitalists, medical patients and persons have interests in defining what is subject to patents. Yet, it …

The Protection Of Children And Their Rights: A Comparison Between The United States And Costa Rica, Abigail Rothweiler

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Abstract:

Introduction: In Missouri, there are over 13,000 children who are currently receiving care through the state foster care system. Because being removed from their families causes life-long trauma and decreased quality of life for many children, it is important that the situation is approached in the best way. While there are differences between St. Louis, Missouri and San Jose, Costa Rica, the Costa Rican child welfare system, El Patronato Nacional de Infancia (PANI), uses several strategies that may be beneficial in St. Louis.

Purpose: To examine the current policies and programs in San Jose, Costa Rica to …

Developing talented graduates to fulfil market challenges is a formidable task for higher education today. By using qualitative method, Malaysian and Japanese professors in selected public universities were interviewed in order to investigate how research practices in laboratory contribute towards student skills development. The result shows that laboratory practices such as group work, mentoring and closed monitoring in organization enhance student employability skills. It is suggested that chain mentoring system from professors to junior researchers to be practiced as a succession planning in developing potential leaders. Closed monitoring between principal investigator, senior and junior researchers is also significant to support …

Baudrillard And The Viral Violence Of Cyber Security, Alex Rivera Jan 2020

Baudrillard And The Viral Violence Of Cyber Security, Alex Rivera

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper explores Jean Baudrillard’s theorization on war and communication, connecting it to recent developments in the field of cyber security. With the important elevation of military forces such as the United States Cyber Command, critical theory needs to interrogate the increasing stature and seriousness of the cyber domain in global military strategies. Baudrillard’s critique shifts the focus from simple military strategies to the globe’s consumption of the information that is offered by the global information complex. This paper explains the nuances of violence surrounding the exchange of media surrounding war, criticizing both pro-war and anti-war stances, to examine the …

Critical Media Effects Framework: Bridging Critical Cultrual Communication And Media Effects Through Power, Intersectionality, Context, And Agency, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Omotayo O. Banjo

Media Studies - Open-Access Faculty Scholarship

In this essay, we advance the Critical Media Effects (CME) framework as a way of bridging two major subfields of communication that seldom speak to one another: media effects scholarship and critical cultural communication. Critical Media Effects is situated within the dominant mode of social scientific theorizing within media effects scholarship and draws on four key interrelated concepts from critical cultural communication: power, intersectionality, context, and agency. Critical Media Effects advocates for greater reflexivity, rigor, and nuance in theorizing about media effects to better respond to the complexity and dynamicity of emerging global sociopolitical mediated contexts. Recommendations, salient examples, and …

Propaganda In An Age Of Algorithmic Personalization: Expanding Literacy Research And Practice, Renee Hobbs Jan 2020

Propaganda In An Age Of Algorithmic Personalization: Expanding Literacy Research And Practice, Renee Hobbs

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In this commentary, the author considers the rise of algorithmic personalization and the power of propaganda as they shift the dynamic landscape of 21st‐century literacy research and practice. Algorithmic personalization uses data from the behaviors, beliefs, interests, and emotions of the target audience to provide filtered digital content, targeted advertising, and differential product pricing to online users. As persuasive genres, advertising and propaganda may demand different types of reading practices than texts whose purpose is primarily informational or argumentative. Understanding the propaganda function of algorithmic personalization may lead to a deeper consideration of texts that activate emotion and tap into …

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Grounded in communicated narrative sense-making theory (CNSM), the purpose of the current study was to test the effects of storylisteners’ communicated perspective taking (CPT) on storytellers’ well-being and evaluations of storylisteners’ communication skills in the context of telling stories about difficulty. Pairs of friends (n = 37) engaged in a storytelling interaction in which one person told a story of a difficult life experience (DLE). Listeners’ CPT was rated by observers using the Communicated Perspective-Taking Rating System (CPTRS) and tellers reported on listeners’ behaviors and their own psychosocial health. Results indicate that observed CPT relates positively to tellers’ perceptions …

Envisioning Critical Social Entrepreneurship Education: Possibilities, Questions, And Guiding Commitments, Mark Congdon Jr., Liliana Herakova Jan 2020

Envisioning Critical Social Entrepreneurship Education: Possibilities, Questions, And Guiding Commitments, Mark Congdon Jr., Liliana Herakova

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Higher education institutions continue to be increasingly interested in examining how social entrepreneurship and community engaged approaches to education can work together. In light of the recent growth and interest in such programs, scholars and educators have called for attention to specific considerations when developing SE and community-based education, which can be summed up in three areas - pedagogy, relationships, and impact. The present essay builds on such propositions, and calls for a critically-orientated approach to SE, grounded in community engagement, collaborative dialogue among diverse voices, and a commitment to transforming oppressive structures

The integration of the sustainable development perspective into the discussion of heritage conservation by UNESCO in 2015 represents an acknowledgement of the values of heritage conservation in the agenda of sustainable development. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence regarding how heritage conservation fits into the overall sustainable development in Hong Kong by examining the external effects generated by architectural heritage conservation onto their adjacent neighborhood. By two adaptive reuse heritage case studies with respective hedonic pricing analysis on their adjacent property prices, this paper presents the results of how residential property prices have been increased as a result of …

Visionary Politics And Methods In Feminist Disability Studies, Jess Waggoner, Ashley Mog Jan 2020

Visionary Politics And Methods In Feminist Disability Studies, Jess Waggoner, Ashley Mog

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In this introduction we explore the genealogies and methodologies of feminist disability studies (FDS). A feminist methodology is politically situated with a focus on the material conditions and social and cultural structures that marginalized people bear, experience, and resist. Methods, and the theories that underpin and create those methodological tools, can open or foreclose possibilities for praxis. Considering theory and method as mutually informative intellectual projects, we ask, how can our methods influence political investments that open up visionary possibilities and plans? How can we take a coalitional approach to disability politics as a method that is informed by collaboration, …

Towards A Trans Feminist Disability Studies, Niamh Timmons Jan 2020

Towards A Trans Feminist Disability Studies, Niamh Timmons

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In this article, I investigate the ways in which Transfeminism and Trans Women can be more integrated and entangled within feminist disability studies and Disability Justice, and vice versa. This would make the field a seemingly rich arena for considering the linkages between Trans Women, Transfeminism, dis/ability, and feminism. Yet, the primary texts of the feminist disability studies consistently leave out Trans Women in their analyses. Specific inclusion and highlighting the experiences of Trans Women, especially Trans Women who are disabled, is often missing from disability rights and disability justice projects. This is especially alarming given the way Trans folks, …
