International Business Education Using Global Virtual Teams: Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence, Global Knowledge, And Team Performance, Maria Randazzo-Davis, Christopher Nelson
International Journal for Business Education
Corporate employees must interact with people from different cultures in cross‐cultural environments. This study examined the extent that cultural intelligence and global knowledge predicted team performance for university students engaged in collaborative team projects resembling the global corporate work environment. The sample for this study was 2,012 students who participated in the X-Culture Global Virtual Team Project during the spring semester of 2015. Participants were members of 412 teams representing 40 countries and attending 95 universities. Study results indicated that global knowledge and cultural intelligence significantly relate to team performance. Cultural intelligence is a significant partial mediation between global knowledge …
The Illogical Logic Of American Entanglement In The Middle East, Ryan Burke, Jahara Matisek
The Illogical Logic Of American Entanglement In The Middle East, Ryan Burke, Jahara Matisek
Journal of Strategic Security
The logic of the American approach to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Syria – both in policy and practice – bears striking resemblance to the U.S. approach to Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite policies of restraint, it has proven difficult to stop the inertia of war, be it against Communism or terrorism. As this inertia grows, so too does illogical entanglement. Such deepening involvement, whether in Vietnam or the Global War on Terror, often results in combat forces undertaking nation- and state-building missions that they are not designed for, yet have been doing for almost two …
Reconceiving Legal Siblinghood, Ruth Zafran
Reconceiving Legal Siblinghood, Ruth Zafran
UC Law Journal
How should the state treat siblings’ legal relationships in cases where the relationship is based solely on genetics, such as between siblings who were born of the same sperm donor, but did not grow up together? How should it treat siblings who were born to the same family but share no genetic connection at all? These are just two formulations of the type of legal dilemmas arising ever more frequently concerning the legal recognition of siblings who are born to families created by gamete donation. In exploring “legal siblinghood” in donor-conceived families, this Article offers a contribution to the literature …
San Antonio Black Aces, Edwin Ocasio-Lopez
San Antonio Black Aces, Edwin Ocasio-Lopez
Methods of Historical Research: Spring 2020 (Archived)
Baseball has been in San Antonio since the 19th century, with the San Antonio Bronchos being the first team in any sport to bring the city a title in 1897. African Americans have been playing baseball for as long as there has been a sport of baseball. In 1908, the city’s first black baseball team, the Black Bronchos, won another championship for the city. After the foundation was laid for African American baseball leagues by the Black Bronchos, the Black Aces made their first and only appearance in San Antonio in 1919. Through immense struggles and pressures due to Jim …

Thresholds Of Curating: Literary Space And Material Culture In The Works Of Harriet Prescott Spofford, Edith Wharton, Isabella Stewart Gardner, And Willa Cather 1870–1920, Lindsay N. Andrews
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation explores the polycentric intersections between material and literary culture in four case studies spanning 1870-1920. Harriet Prescott Spofford, Edith Wharton, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Willa Cather are four women whose work reflects a capacity to defy the genre-specific boundaries for which they are canonically renown. Harriet Prescott Spofford was an important contributor to the interior design movement in the early Gilded Age following challenges to finding publication resources for her fiction within a male-dominated publishing community. Edith Wharton’s ties to material culture are well known, but less attention is granted to the ways in which her own expertise …

Skeletal muscle contributes to ~40% of total body mass and has numerous important mechanical and metabolic roles in the body. Skeletal muscle is a major site for glucose disposal following a meal. Consequently, skeletal muscle plays an important role in postprandial blood glucose homeostasis. Over the past number of decades, research has demonstrated that insulin has an important role in vasodilating the vasculature in skeletal muscle in response to an insulin infusion (hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp) or following the ingestion of a meal. This vascular action of insulin is pivotal for glucose disposal in skeletal muscle, as insulin-stimulated vasodilation increases the delivery …
The White Album As Neo-Victorian Fiction Of Loss, Lucas Kwong
The White Album As Neo-Victorian Fiction Of Loss, Lucas Kwong
Publications and Research
Although much has been written about the Beatles' celebration of Victorian culture on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, little scholarship, if any, has focused on the White Album’s relationship to the late Victorian period. This paper examines the White Album through the lens of what Victorian studies scholar Stephen Arata has called “fictions of loss,” a body of late Victorian texts depicting intertwined processes of “national, biological, [and] aesthetic” decline. Through examining songs like "Helter Skelter" and "Revolution Number 9," I argue that the White Album deserves consideration alongside Dracula and She as a “fiction of loss,” …

U.S.-Born Mexican-Origin Women’S Descriptions About Their Eating Patterns, Juanita T. Garcia, Leona Vandevusse
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction
Mexican origin (MO) women comprise the largest Hispanic subgroup of Latinas in the United States. This subgroup has high incidences of obesity and associated chronic diseases. Modifiable risk factors for these include unhealthy diets and eating patterns. Efforts to understand eating patterns of Hispanics have focused on primarily first-generation Hispanics. The purpose of this study was to explore U.S.-born MO women’s descriptions about eating patterns.
Method
A qualitative exploratory-descriptive study, using a thematic analysis approach, was employed. Fifteen MO women were interviewed. The participants were second to fourth generation and reported higher educational attainment, middle-income socioeconomic brackets, and English …

The Moving Image And The Time Of Prophecy: Trauma And Precognition In L. Von Trier’S Melancholia (2011) And D. Villeneuve’S Arrival (2016), Luca Zanchi
Journal of Religion & Film
Both the deferred recurrence of post-traumatic symptoms and the foresight granted by prophetic vision bring about a disruption of temporality and generate a chronological discontinuity which is often formally rendered as narrative discontinuity. This similarity produces an interpretive ambiguity that is central to the films, Melancholia (2011) by Von Trier and Arrival (2016) by Denis Villeneuve. Both movies begin by hinting at the post-traumatic origin of visions and then gradually shift towards a prophetic explanation. In addressing these two case studies, this article approaches prophecy and its temporality from a narratological perspective, integrating the critical parameters of trauma-theory with the …
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Journal of Religion & Film
Despite its brevity and science fiction genre, Terry Gilliam's "aliens sequence" in Monty Python's Life of Brian functions in at least three ways: It is a brilliant parody of Star Wars and other space epics. It addresses concerns that were of profound significance for the religion of Jesus' day and, finally, and it significantly challenges the Christian premise of a divinely ordained purpose underlying Jesus' life.

The Metaphorical Bridge Between Law And Religion, John Witte Jr.
The Metaphorical Bridge Between Law And Religion, John Witte Jr.
Pepperdine Law Review
This Article explores the role of metaphors in shaping our thought and language in general, and in the fields of law and religion in particular. Drawing on modern cognitive theorists like George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the Article distinguishes and illustrates the roles of “orientation,” “structural,” and “ontological” metaphors in everyday life and language. Drawing on jurists like Robert Cover and Steven Winter, it shows how metaphors work both in describing the law in terms like “the body,” and in prescribing the foundational beliefs and values on which the legal system depends. Finally, the Article explores the ample use of …

Asceticism In World Religious Traditions, Gulnora Khudayberganova
Asceticism In World Religious Traditions, Gulnora Khudayberganova
The Light of Islam
A comparative approach to the study of the phenomenon of asceticism within the framework of the teachings of world religions allows individuals to view the internal features and hidden sections of the ascetic experience (as is) and the mood in them as a state of society. The ascetic phenomenon, which has existed in the life of society since ancient times, has become an important and sometimes dominant factor in social development. In the twenty-fist century it is impossible not to notice the rapid growth of countless associations, organizations, groups and individuals, which directly or indirectly reflct the attachment to the …

Role Of Bet Inhibitors In Triple Negative Breast Cancers, Durga Khandekar, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi
Biology Faculty Research
Bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) proteins have evolved as key multifunctional super-regulators that control gene expression. These proteins have been shown to upregulate transcriptional machinery leading to over expression of genes involved in cell proliferation and carcinogenesis. Based on favorable preclinical evidence of BET inhibitors in various cancer models; currently, 26 clinical trials are underway in various stages of study on various hematological and solid organ cancers. Unfortunately, preliminary evidence for these clinical studies does not support the application of BET inhibitors as monotherapy in cancer treatment. Furthermore, the combinatorial efficiency of BET inhibitors with other chemo-and immunotherapeutic agents remain …
Shakespeare And Econo-Literary Criticism, Min Jiao
Shakespeare And Econo-Literary Criticism, Min Jiao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article introduces the phases and practices of econo-literary criticism over the years to argue for the interdisciplinary studies of literature and economics. By explicating the fruitful research on Shakespearean works from the different perspectives of econo-literary criticism, it argues that this critical practice, through examining texts for their embedded economic forms, contents and contexts, can furnish new perspectives on literary texts as well as cultural and economic history, which, in turn, benefits the research of economics, whose innate ethic deficiencies are growingly felt recently.
Understanding As Obstacle: Exercise As A Perspective For Intercultural Research, Pfizenmaier Ruben
Understanding As Obstacle: Exercise As A Perspective For Intercultural Research, Pfizenmaier Ruben
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper argues that modes of understanding built on familiarity with the other, as well as on contrastive opposition can become an obstacle in intercultural research. Built on a critique of Gadamer's idea of a fusion of horizons, it claims that intercultural research not only has to circumvent the danger of reducing the other under the familiar, but also has to prevent a construction of the other as exotic and absolutely different.

Supreme Court Journalism: From Law To Spectacle?, Barry Sullivan, Cristina Carmody Tilley

Few people outside certain specialized sectors of the press and the legal profession have any particular reason to read the increasingly voluminous opinions through which the Justices of the Supreme Court explain their interpretations of the Constitution and laws. Most of what the public knows about the Supreme Court necessarily comes from the press. That fact raises questions of considerable importance to the functioning of our constitutional democracy: How, for example, does the press describe the work of the Supreme Court? And has the way in which the press describes the work of the Court changed over the past several …

Genetic Diversity And Relationships Of Tlingit Moieties, Rodrigo De Los Santos, Cara Monroe, Rico Worl, Rosita Worl, Kari B. Schroeder, Brian M. Kemp
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The Tlingit from Southeast Alaska belong to the Northwest Coast cultural tradition, which is defined by regionally shared sociocultural practices. A distinctive feature of Tlingit social organization is the matrilineal exogamous marriage system among clans from two opposite moieties: the Raven/Crow and Eagle/Wolf. Clan and moiety membership are determined by matrilineal descent, and previous genetic studies of Northwest Coast populations have shown that there is a relationship between clan membership and genetic variation of matrilines and patrilines. To further understand this association, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from the Tlingit (n=154) are examined. By comparing mtDNA with moiety membership information, we …

Who Owns The Bard?: P. T. Barnum, Charles Dickens, And The Shakespeare Birthplace Showdown Of 1847, Abigail Clayton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the twenty-first century age of globalization, debates over global versus national ownership of cultural heritage remain at the forefront of public consciousness. The cultural ownership of William Shakespeare, who is idealized as both a distinctly British icon and a global literary influence, has become contested ground; but, in fact, as I argue, this tension first boiled to the surface in 1847. In the spring of that year, newspapers advertised that Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon would soon go up for public auction. Rumors immediately began circulating that the American showman P. T. Barnum, who had recently barnstormed through England with …

Comparing Binge-Watching Motivations In South Korea And The United States: Westernization Of South Korean Entertainment Media, Sohyun Ribeiro
Theses and Dissertations
Asian cultures have been heavily influenced by Western culture due to globalization. Video on demand (VOD) services provide a means to quantify the westernization of Asian cultures, especially those within South Korea. As the majority of current binge-watching studies have been conducted utilizing U.S. samples, there is a need for comparative research between the two cultures, to see if westernization can be quantified via these means. The current study examined the relative levels of five Korean binge-watching motivations (enjoyment, efficiency, recommendation of others, perceived control, fandom) and eight American binge-watching motivations (escape, information, engagement, relaxation, passing time, hedonism, social, habit) …
