Evaluation Of The Performance Of Different Polymer Gel Systems As An In-Depth Gel Treatment Using Numerical Simulation, Tariq K. Khamees Jan 2020

Evaluation Of The Performance Of Different Polymer Gel Systems As An In-Depth Gel Treatment Using Numerical Simulation, Tariq K. Khamees

Doctoral Dissertations

"Oil production from heterogeneous and naturally fractured reservoirs are usually hindered due to the presence of high-permeability streaks and natural fractures networks. Oil production could be more lowered if there is a crossflow from the high- to the low-permeability layers and high mobility ratio. These problems are called conformance problems and the treatment is called conformance improvement technologies (CITs). The aims of CIT is to correct the heterogeneity of the reservoir and to lower the unfavorable mobility ratio. These technologies are leading to the diversion of post-treatment water into the low-permeability layers and to increase the viscosity of the displacing …

Novel Approaches For Reliable And Efficient Circuit Design, Prashanthi Metku Jan 2020

Novel Approaches For Reliable And Efficient Circuit Design, Prashanthi Metku

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this research work, a suite of approaches are presented to improve reliability of 3D heterogeneous processors (3DHP) and to reduce the area overhead of asynchronous designs. This work is primarily divided into two parts. In the first part, we present an approach for improving reliability in 3DHP. Typically, in 3DHP, thermal hotspots introduce spatial and temporal variability that results in wide bit error variation in DRAM dies. To address this issue multi- path BCH decoder is introduced. Based on the thermal gradient data generated by on-chip temperature sensors, the proposed methodology specializes in adaptively estimating the number of errors …

"The fluctuation of water level downstream from dams due to hydropower flow releases negatively affects the riverbank stability. Therefore, this research aims to examine the feasibility of using an optimization technique to mitigate the riverbank instability resulting from the outflow variation of hydropower plants. The effects of the water releases from the Bagnell Dam were investigated by computing a series of safety factors for 78 cross sections along the 81-mile stretch of the lower Osage River in relation to outflow events by using the integrated BSTEM model incorporated into the HEC-RAS model. The 1-D sediment transport and unsteady flow in …

Characterization And Recyclability Of 304l Stainless Steel Powder For Use In The Selective Laser Melting Process, Austin Taylor Sutton Jan 2020

Characterization And Recyclability Of 304l Stainless Steel Powder For Use In The Selective Laser Melting Process, Austin Taylor Sutton

Doctoral Dissertations

"Powder-bed fusion refers to a subset of additive manufacturing (AM) methods which successively melts and solidifies selected regions within a powder bed on a layer-by-layer basis to construct components directly from computer-aided design files. Laser Powder-Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is a process among the powder-bed fusion techniques that utilizes a laser to consolidate particles into a material with little porosity. During the L-PBF process, the large energy input from the laser causes the production of ejecta in the form of laser spatter and condensate, both of which have the potential to settle in the surrounding powder bed compromising its reusability. In …

Experimental Investigation Of Ionic Liquid Mixtures For Electrospray Propulsion, Mitchell J. Wainwright

Doctoral Dissertations

"In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of small satellites (namely MicroSats, NanoSats, and CubeSats) in earth orbit; many of these are launched without propulsion systems. Multi-mode propulsion systems, capable of operating in either chemical or electric mode, have been proposed as attractive candidates for use in small satellites. Such systems are mass and volume optimal and flexible in terms of thrust requirements. Most previous work on multi-mode systems has focused on chemical mode performance. The work in this dissertation focuses on the electric mode performance of these propulsion systems.

The work in this research is …

A Broad Iceland Plume Associated With Two Phase Transitions At The 660 Km Discontinuity: Constraints From Receiver Functions, Dan Wang Jan 2020

A Broad Iceland Plume Associated With Two Phase Transitions At The 660 Km Discontinuity: Constraints From Receiver Functions, Dan Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"In spite of the fact that Iceland is frequently regarded as the archetypal example of mantle plumes, the existence, depth extent, origin, dimension and excess temperature of the hypothesized plume remain enigmatic and hotly debated. The controversy mostly originates from the limited vertical resolution of seismic tomography techniques and the associated uncertainty in the depth and lateral extents of the lower wavespeed anomaly. Here we utilize a robust receiver-function-based technique to image the topography of the 410 and 660 km discontinuities bordering the mantle transition zone beneath Iceland and surrounding oceanic regions, and construct thermal and seismic wavespeed models of …

System Si/Pi Modeling And Analysis, Biyao Zhao Jan 2020

System Si/Pi Modeling And Analysis, Biyao Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

"A physics-based circuit modeling methodology for 3D IC/packages is proposed here. The method is based on partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) and layered Green's function (LGF). The LGFs are calculated from discrete complex image method (DCIM) with three terms, direct coupling, complex images, and surface wave, extracted to analyze the wave behavior. The dominate terms for LGFs are analyzed for four stack-ups in 3D IC/packages. Analytical formulas that include the contribution of complex images are proposed for partial capacitance calculation, with the complex image extracted from LGFs. A chip PDN geometry is used to illustrate the use of LGF in …

Trajectory Control Of A Wheeled Robot Using Interaction Forces For Intuitive Overground Human-Robot Interaction, George Leno Holmes Jr. Jan 2020

Trajectory Control Of A Wheeled Robot Using Interaction Forces For Intuitive Overground Human-Robot Interaction, George Leno Holmes Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"Effective and intuitive physical human robot interaction (pHRI) requires an understanding of how humans communicate movement intentions with one another. It has been suggested that humans can guide another human by hand through complex tasks using force information only. However, no clear and applicable paradigm has been set forth to understand these relationships. While the human partner can readily understand and adhere to this expectation, it would be difficult for anyone to explain their intuitive motions with strict rules, algorithms, or steps. Uncovering such a procedural framework for the control of robotic systems to execute expected performance simply from force …

An Integrated Wellbore Stability Study To Mitigate Expensive Wellbore Instability Problems While Drilling Into Zubair Shale/Sand Sequence, Southern Iraq, Ahmed Khudhair Abbas Jan 2020

An Integrated Wellbore Stability Study To Mitigate Expensive Wellbore Instability Problems While Drilling Into Zubair Shale/Sand Sequence, Southern Iraq, Ahmed Khudhair Abbas

Doctoral Dissertations

”The Zubair Formation is the most prolific reservoir in Iraq, which is comprised of sandstones interbedded with shale sequences. Due to the weak nature of the shale sequence, the instability of a wellbore is one of the most critical challenges that continuously appears during drilling across this formation. Historically, over 90% of wellbore problems in the Zubair Formation were due to wellbore instability. Problems associated with wellbore instability, such as tight hole, shale caving, stuck logging tools along with subsequent fishing, stuck pipe, and sidetracking result in increasing the non-productive time. This non-productive time has cost an enormous amount of …

“ The goals of higher education have evolved through time based on the impact that technology development and industry have on productivity. Nowadays, jobs demand increased technical skills, and the supply of prepared personnel to assume those jobs is insufficient. The system of higher education needs to evaluate their practices to realize the potential of cultivating an educated and technically skilled workforce. Currently, completion rates at universities are too low to accomplish the aim of closing the workforce gap. Recent reports indicate that 40 percent of freshman at four-year public colleges will not graduate, and rates of completion are even …

Applications Of Information Theory In Filtering And Sensor Management, Matthew James Gualdoni Jan 2020

Applications Of Information Theory In Filtering And Sensor Management, Matthew James Gualdoni

Doctoral Dissertations

“A classical sensor tasking methodology is analyzed in the context of generating sensor schedules for monitoring resident space objects (RSOs). This approach, namely maximizing the expected Kullback-Leibler divergence in a measurement update, is evaluated from a probabilistic perspective to determine the accuracy of the conventional approach. In this investigation, a newdivergence-based approach is proposed to circumvent themyopic nature of the measure, forecasting the potential information contribution to a time of interest and leveraging the system dynamics and measurement model to do so. The forecasted objective exploits properties of a batch measurement update to frequently exhibit faster optimization times when compared …

“The stability of a protein-based biological drug is an important concern during processing, storage or patient administration. There are various forces which contribute to the stabilizing of proteins. Both hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions play an important role in protein stability. Improper folding or misfolding of proteins leads to aggregation, which is a major problem found in the bioprocessing industry. The objectives of this research are: 1) to determine the effect of environmental factors such as pH, temperature, additives or salts, and cosolvents on the stability human serum albumin (HAS), which is the most abundant protein in plasma, 2) to …

Generalization Of Polynomial Chaos For Estimation Of Angular Random Variables, Christine Louise Schmid Jan 2020

Generalization Of Polynomial Chaos For Estimation Of Angular Random Variables, Christine Louise Schmid

Doctoral Dissertations

“The state of a dynamical system will rarely be known perfectly, requiring the variable elements in the state to become random variables. More accurate estimation of the uncertainty in the random variable results in a better understanding of how the random variable will behave at future points in time. Many methods exist for representing a random variable within a system including a polynomial chaos expansion (PCE), which expresses a random variable as a linear combination of basis polynomials.

Polynomial chaos expansions have been studied at length for the joint estimation of states that are purely translational (i.e. described in Cartesian …

Accurate Modeling Techniques For Power Delivery, Jingdong Sun Jan 2020

Accurate Modeling Techniques For Power Delivery, Jingdong Sun

Doctoral Dissertations

“Power delivery is essential in electronic systems to provide reliable power from voltage sources to load devices. Driven by the ambitious user demands and technology evolutions, the power delivery design is posed serious challenges. In this work, we focus on modeling two types of power delivery paths: the power distribution network (PDN) and the wireless power transfer (WPT) system.

For the modeling of PDN, a novel pattern-based analytical method is proposed for PCB-level PDN impedance calculations, which constructs an equivalent circuit with one-to-one correspondences to the PCB’s physical structure. A practical modeling methodology is also introduced to optimize the PDN …

Cyber Physical Security Of Avionic Systems, Anusha Thudimilla Jan 2020

Cyber Physical Security Of Avionic Systems, Anusha Thudimilla

Doctoral Dissertations

“Cyber-physical security is a significant concern for critical infrastructures. The exponential growth of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) and the strong inter-dependency between the cyber and physical components introduces integrity issues such as vulnerability to injecting malicious data and projecting fake sensor measurements. Traditional security models partition the CPS from a security perspective into just two domains: high and low. However, this absolute partition is not adequate to address the challenges in the current CPSs as they are composed of multiple overlapping partitions. Information flow properties are one of the significant classes of cyber-physical security methods that model how inputs of a …

Secure Blockchains For Cyber-Physical Systems, Matthew Edward Wagner Jan 2020

Secure Blockchains For Cyber-Physical Systems, Matthew Edward Wagner

Doctoral Dissertations

“Blockchains are a data structure used to perform state agreement in a distributed system across an entire network. One unique trait of blockchains is the lack of a centralized trusted third-party to control the system. This prevents a corrupted trusted third party from being able to control the entire blockchain. All nodes can reach agreement in an untrusted network where nodes do not need to trust one another to believe the accuracy of the information stored. Two main issues occur when trying to apply this technology to other applications: verifiability and scalability. In previous blockchain architectures, there is no way …
