Synthesis, Biological Evaluation Of Antioxidant-Antibacterial Activities And Computational Studies Of Novel Anthracene- And Pyrene-Based Schiff Base Derivatives, Ayşegül Gümüş, Veysi̇ Okumuş, Selçuk Gümüş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Schiff base derivatives with anthracene- and pyrene-based units, A1-A6 and P1-P6 were synthesized (89%-99% yields). Schiff base derivatives were designed to possess an heterocyclic moiety on one side to enhance the coordination ability towards metals. To investigate the biological assay of the newly synthesized compounds, their DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, metal chelating, reducing power, antibacterial and DNA binding activities were tested. A6 (63.1%) showed the maximum free radical scavenging activity among all. However, compound P3 at concentration of 200 \textmu g/mL possessed the highest metal chelating (45.8%) activity and power of reduction. In addition, P3 and A6 showed antibacterial activity …

Magnetite Nanoparticles-Based Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging Activity Assay Ofantioxidants Using N, N-Dimethyl-P-Phenylenediamine Probe, Zi̇ya Can, Büşra Keski̇n, Ayşem Arda, Erol Erçağ, Mustafa Reşat Apak
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$:MNPs) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity. In this study, hydroxyl radicals (?OH) generated by MNPs-catalyzed degradation of H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ converted the N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) probe into its colored DMPD$^{•+}$ radical cation, which gave an absorbance maximum at λ = 553 nm. In the presence of antioxidants, $^{•}$OH was partly scavenged by antioxidants and produced less …

Synthesis, Characterization And Evaluation Of Antidengue Activity Of Enantiomeric Schiffbases Derived From S-Substituted Dithiocarbazate, Maqsood Maryam, Sang Loon Tan, Karen Ann Crouse, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Tahir, Hui Yee Chee
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A series of Schiff bases have been successfully synthesized through the acid-catalyzed condensation of S-substituted dithiocarbazates and three enantiomerically pure monoterpenes, (1R)-(+)-camphor, (1S)-(-)-camphor, (1R)-(-)-camphorquinone, (1S)- (+)-camphorquinone, (R)-(-)-carvone and (S)-(+)-carvone. Spectroscopic results revealed that the Schiff bases containing camphor or carvone likely adopted an E-configuration along the characteristic imine bond while those containing camphorquinone assumed a Z-configuration. The antidengue potential of these compounds was evaluated based on DENV 2 caused cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction-based in vitro evaluation. The compounds were validated through secondary foci forming unit reduction assay (FFURA). Compounds were also tested for their cytotoxicity against Vero cells. The compounds …
Secondary Trauma Of Lay Mental Health Workers In Low Resource Locations: Bukavu, Janny Jinor
Secondary Trauma Of Lay Mental Health Workers In Low Resource Locations: Bukavu, Janny Jinor
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
A general consensus exists in the literature that working with a trauma population will produce negative personal, psychological, and professional consequences including secondary trauma. However, a significant research gap occurs with regard to how secondary trauma affects psychosocial assistants (PAs) who work in low-resource and conflict-stricken Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC is plagued by psychological problems resulting from numerous past and ongoing conflicts, but sufficient trained mental health personnel and resources are lacking. As a result, the dire responsibility of providing mental health services to survivors of rape has shifted to minimally trained PAs. This …
Gain Enhancement Of On-Chip Wireless Interconnects At 60 Ghz Using An Artificial Magnetic Conductor, Douglas Bean
Gain Enhancement Of On-Chip Wireless Interconnects At 60 Ghz Using An Artificial Magnetic Conductor, Douglas Bean
Theses
The motivation for this work comes from the increased demand for short range high frequency data communication within and between integrated circuit (IC) chips. The use of wireless interconnects introduces flexibility to the circuit design, reduces power consumption and production costs, since the antennas can be integrated into a standard CMOS process. These findings have been well noted in literature. In addition, wireless interconnects operating in the mm-wave frequency range, at 60GHz, allow for a high data rate of over 1Gb/s for short range of transmissions. The drawback of wireless interconnects operating at high frequencies is the distortion in the …

Microplastic particles (<5 >mm) constitute a growing pollution problem within coastal environments. This study investigated the microplastic presence of estuarine and barrier island beaches in the states of Virginia and North Carolina, USA. Seventeen sediment cores were collected at four study sites and initially tested for microplastic presence by pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. For the extraction, microplastic particles were first separated from the sediment using a high-density cesium chloride solution (1.88 g/mL). In a second step, an oil extraction collected the remaining microplastic particles of higher densities. Under the light microscope, the extracted microplastic particles were classified based on their morphologies …5>

Coastal ecosystems are critically affected by seagrass, both economically and ecologically. However, reliable seagrass distribution information is lacking in nearly all parts of the world because of the excessive costs associated with its assessment. In this paper, we develop two deep learning models for automatic seagrass distribution quantification based on 8-band satellite imagery. Specifically, we implemented a deep capsule network (DCN) and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to assess seagrass distribution through regression. The DCN model first determines whether seagrass is presented in the image through classification. Second, if seagrass is presented in the image, it quantifies the seagrass …

Arctic coastal ecosystems are rapidly changing due to climate warming, which makes modelling their productivity crucially important to better understand future changes. System primary production in these systems is highest during the pronounced spring bloom, typically dominated by diatoms. Eventually the spring blooms terminate due to silicon or nitrogen limitation. Bacteria can play an important role for extending bloom duration and total CO2 fixation through ammonium regeneration. Current ecosystem models often simplify the effects of nutrient co-limitations on algal physiology and cellular ratios and neglect bacterial driven regeneration, leading to an underestimation of primary production. Detailed biochemistry- and cell-based models …

Satellite remote sensing offers an effective remedy to challenges in ground-based and aerial mapping that have previously impeded quantitative assessments of global seagrass extent. Commercial satellite platforms offer fine spatial resolution, an important consideration in patchy seagrass ecosystems. Currently, no consistent protocol exists for image processing of commercial data, limiting reproducibility and comparison across space and time. Additionally, the radiometric performance of commercial satellite sensors has not been assessed against the dark and variable targets characteristic of coastal waters. This study compared data products derived from two commercial satellites: DigitalGlobe's WorldView-2 and Planet's RapidEye. A single scene from each platform …

Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Journal Articles
Project-based learning (PBL) engages students deeply with course concepts and empowers them to drive their own learning through the development of solutions to real-world challenges. By taking ownership of and completing a project that they designed, students develop and demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. This paper describes two different software development projects, designed with a PBL approach, in Python coding courses at two business universities in the United States, in which students queried real-world data to answer their own questions and interpret the results. The authors contend that projects based on a PBL approach motivate students for selfexploration …

Novel Bodipy-Bridged Cyclotriphosphazenes, Hande Eserci̇, Ezel Öztürk, Eli̇f Okutan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Three new 2-component unsubstituted (4P), diiodo- (5P), and dibromo- (6P) distyryl-BODIPY-bridged cyclotriphosphazene dimers were designed and synthesized. The newly synthesized BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene systems were characterized by $^{1}$H, $^{13}$C, and $^{31}$P NMR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the distryl-BODIPYs (4-6) and BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene dyads (4P-6P) were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. In these derivatives, the bino-type cyclotriphosphazene derivative bearing unsubstituted BODIPY unit 4 P exhibited high fluorescence and no singlet oxygen generation due to the lack of spin converter. The attachment of heavy atoms (iodine and bromine) enabled the production of singlet oxygen. The bino-type BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazenes (5P and 6P) were …

"It's Not Like He Was Being A Robot:" Student Perceptions Of Video-Based Writing Feedback In Online Graduate Coursework, David T. Marshall, Savanna M. Love, Laron Scott
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although much research has explored the impact writing feedback has on student learning, it has primarily focused on undergraduate coursework offered in traditional face-to-face settings. This work explores student perceptions of writing feedback they received in an online graduate-level research methods course. Using a seven-point framework based on undergraduate writing feedback literature, students received feedback on a semester-long research proposal writing project. We explored student perceptions of the feedback they received in both written and video formats. Interviews were conducted with participants in both studies to understand their perceptions of the feedback they received. Students perceived the feedback and revision …

Dimensions Or Discrete Entities?: Cluster A Personality Disorders In A Psychometrically Identified Schizotypic Sample, Kaitlin M. Keister
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For decades, mental health clinicians and researchers have debated over the classification of personality disorders (PDs). Although currently classified categorically, dimensional models have increased in popularity, and there have been several proposals to overhaul the classification of these disorders (cf. Livesley, Schroeder, Jackson, & Jang, 1994; McCrae, 1994; Widiger & Clark, 2000). Disagreements over PDs raise conflict for psychologists who assume normal personality to be dimensional, but recognize that some pathological personality disorders may be discrete entities (e.g., Haslam, 2003). Moreover, growing evidence suggests that some diagnostic constructs may be distributed as discrete latent classes rather than quantitative shifts in …

Functional Analysis Of Cftr Promoter Dna Variants, Tiffany Michelle Ledbetter-Brumbeloe
Theses
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease that affects 1 in 3500 people in the United States. CF affects epithelial cells in areas such as the lungs, GI tract and reproductive system. The disease is caused by variants in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene which result in mutations in the CFTR protein. However, some CF patients who have the same genotype for the CFTR gene experience different severities of the disease. One explanation for this is that CFTR promoter SNPs influence gene expression which could lead to differing severities of CF. To test this hypothesis, luciferase …

Development Of A Pzt Fiber Sensor Rosette For Structural Health Monitoring Using Lamb Wave Responses, Bao Chi Ha
Development Of A Pzt Fiber Sensor Rosette For Structural Health Monitoring Using Lamb Wave Responses, Bao Chi Ha
Theses
Because of their electro-mechanical coupling property, Lead-Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) materials have been widely used for ultrasonic wave sensing and actuation in structural health monitoring applications. In this thesis, a PZT rosette sensor concept is proposed to conduct Lamb wave based damage detection in panel-like structures by exploring its best directional sensing capability. First, a directivity study was conducted to investigate sensing of flexural Lamb wave propagation using the d33 effect in a PZT fiber. Then, commercial off-the-shelf PZT fibers were polarized in-house in order to construct the PZT rosette in a rectangular configuration, in which three PZT fibers were oriented at …

Testing The Forensic Confirmation Bias : Do Jailhouse Informants Contaminate Evidentiary Independence?, Baylee D. Jenkins
Theses
Research has shown that primary confessions influence forensic evidence examinations such as handwriting evidence. Additionally, previous research on secondary confessions from jailhouse informants has indicated that primary and secondary confessions are equally influential in jury decision making. The current study investigated the relationship between jailhouse informant statements and perceptions of forensic evidence. Participants read a case summary depicting a bank robbery along with confession evidence either from the suspect or a jailhouse informant before examining handwriting evidence. Result indicated that reliable jailhouse informant statements led participants to fall prey to the forensic confirmation bias. Jailhouse informant reliability significantly impacted perceptions …
An Exploration Of The Impact Of Clothing Match And Opportunity To View On Showup Performance, Alexis Marie Le Grand
An Exploration Of The Impact Of Clothing Match And Opportunity To View On Showup Performance, Alexis Marie Le Grand
Theses
Clothing bias occurs during a showup when the clothing worn by the suspect matches the clothing of the culprit during a crime. The present study investigated whether a clothing match enhanced identification performance at varying levels of culprit facial view. Witnesses watched a mock-crime video and then made an identification decision from a showup. The results indicated that a clothing match led to an increase in correct and false identifications of the suspect, regardless of facial view. However, the presence of a clothing match did not enhance discriminability. Additionally, there was not a match by facial view interaction. Furthermore, there …

The Detection Of Continuing Current In Lightning Using The Geostationary Lightning Mapper And Exploring Its Relationship To Lightning Initiated-Wildfires, Sarah I. Fairman
Theses
Lightning with continuing current may have current durations that last for hundreds of milliseconds, resulting in continuous optical emission that coincides with the uninterrupted current flow. The space-based Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is an optical sensor that allows for the detection of continuous optical emission. GLM optical attributes associated with continuous optical emission are utilized to train a multiple logistic regression model to predict the presence of continuing current. GLM flashes that have continuous optical emission related to higher probabilities of continuing current tend to cover a longer distance, have a brighter maximum optical energy, and cover a larger maximum …
