Universal Scale Factors Relating Mesonic Fields And Quark Operators, Amir H. Fariborz, Jason Ho, Tom G. Steele Jan 2020

Universal Scale Factors Relating Mesonic Fields And Quark Operators, Amir H. Fariborz, Jason Ho, Tom G. Steele

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Scale factor matrices relating mesonic fields in chiral Lagrangians and quark-level operators of QCD sum-rules are shown to be constrained by chiral symmetry, resulting in universal scale factors for each chiral nonet. Built upon this interplay between chiral Lagrangians and QCD sum-rules, the scale factors relating the a0 isotriplet scalar mesons to their underlying quark composite field were recently determined. It is shown that the same technique when applied to K∗0 isodoublet scalars reproduces the same scale factors, confirming the universality property and further validating this connection between chiral Lagrangians and QCD sum-rules which can have nontrivial impacts on our …

Fraudulent Transcripts, Edward Trombley Jan 2020

Fraudulent Transcripts, Edward Trombley

Publications

The use of fraudulent credentials, including standalone transcripts, forged degrees, and the transcripts that support forged degrees, is a concern worldwide, which affects colleges and universities, employers, governmental licensing boards, and other agencies. The circumstances are varied, the scenarios often implausible, and many fall into the “truth is stranger than fiction” category.

Adiabatic Trajectory Approximation Within The Framework Of Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory, Bikramaditya Mandal, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov Jan 2020

Adiabatic Trajectory Approximation Within The Framework Of Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory, Bikramaditya Mandal, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A hierarchy of approximate methods is proposed for solving the equations of motion within a framework of the mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT) of inelastic molecular collisions. Of particular interest is a limiting case: the method in which the classical-like equations of motion for the translational degrees of freedom (scattering) are decoupled from the quantum-like equations for time evolution of the internal molecular states (rotational and vibrational). In practice, trajectories are pre-computed during the first step of calculations with driving forces determined solely by the potential energy surface of the entrance channel, which is an adiabatic trajectory approximation. Quantum state-to-state transition …

An Exploration Of Graduate And Medical Students’ Perception And Knowledge Of Other Healthcare Disciplines Contributions To Patient Care, Ashley Poole Jan 2020

An Exploration Of Graduate And Medical Students’ Perception And Knowledge Of Other Healthcare Disciplines Contributions To Patient Care, Ashley Poole

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Multidisciplinary teams have been identified as an effective approach to improving patient treatment outcomes for a number of health conditions, including cancer and depression. Interprofessional education (IPE) facilitates learning opportunities for health professional students to gain exposure to the ways different healthcare professions can work together to provide patient care. The objective of this study was to assess graduate and medical students’ ratings of health care professional characteristics after engaging in an IPE experience. A survey using the Student Stereotypes Rating Questionnaire (SSRQ), which consists of a five-point Likert-type scale was utilized to carry out the study goals. Each student …

Deep Uv Fluorescence Scanning Microscopy For Breast Tumor Margin Detection, Tongtong Lu, Julie M. Jorns, Mollie Patton, Renee Fisher, Amanda Emmrich, Todd Doehring, Taly Gilat-Schmidt, Dong Hye Ye, Tina Yen, Bing Yu

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. Positive margin status after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is a predictor of higher rates of local recurrence. Intraoperative margin detection helps to complete tumor excision at the first operation. A margin tool that is capable of imaging all six margins of large lumpectomy specimens with both high resolution and fast speed (within 20 min) is yet to be developed. Deep UV light allows simultaneous excitation of multiple fluorophores and generating surface fluorescence images. We have developed a deep UV fluorescence scanning microscope (DUV-FSM) for slide-free, high-resolution and rapid examination of tumor …

The Influence Of Anhedonic Symptom Severity On Dmpfc Connectivity In Ptsd, Nathan L. Bugger, Sally M. Pessin, Carissa Philippi, Steven Bruce

Undergraduate Research Symposium

This study examined resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex ( dmPFC ) as a function of anhedonia in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Results showed that anhedonia positively correlated with hyperconnectivity between the dmPFC and the left retrosplenial cortex. These findings support that anhedonia is associated with increased rsFC within the default mode network (DMN) for PTSD.

Images Of Ancient Egypt And The Gender Politics Of The Faerie Queene, Genavieve Alt Jan 2020

Images Of Ancient Egypt And The Gender Politics Of The Faerie Queene, Genavieve Alt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My thesis argues that Edmund Spenser uses radically different representations of Ancient Egypt to explore complex ideas about gender roles in the Faerie Queene. Book III emphasizes the negative view of Egypt perpetuated through the Book of Exodus and Greek understanding of the mythological king Busiris. Book V emphasizes the positive view of Egypt through the many benevolent myths surrounding the goddess Isis. Spenser uses images of good and evil Egypt to discuss the abolition of normative gender roles.

The introductory section will introduce the mythology surrounding Isis followed by a discussion of the literature referenced throughout. The first …

Exploring Aspects Of Science Literacy Demonstrated By Early Undergraduate Stem Majors Through A Manuscript-Style Writing Assignment, Samantha Lynn Jusino Jan 2020

Exploring Aspects Of Science Literacy Demonstrated By Early Undergraduate Stem Majors Through A Manuscript-Style Writing Assignment, Samantha Lynn Jusino

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the past twenty years, scientific literacy amongst undergraduates has not improved despite their exposure to higher education science classes. Underlying mechanisms of science literacy development are poorly understood; however, exposure to authentic practices in science has been demonstrated as a means to fostering science literacy development. A unique approach to studying science literacy is through examining the three domains of the science literacy conceptual framework developed in this study, Science as Access, Science as Process, and Science as a Sociopolitical Factor and their components as they emerge through the process of writing a manuscript-style writing assignment. In …

The Wandering Officer, Ben Grunwald, John Rappaport Jan 2020

The Wandering Officer, Ben Grunwald, John Rappaport

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

“Wandering officers” are law-enforcement officers fired by one department, sometimes for serious misconduct, who then find work at another agency. Policing experts hold disparate views about the extent and character of the wandering-officer phenomenon. Some insist that wandering officers are everywhere—possibly increasingly so—and that they’re dangerous. Others, however, maintain that critics cherry-pick rare and egregious anecdotes that distort broader realities. In the absence of systematic data, we simply do not know how common wandering officers are or how much of a threat they pose, nor can we know whether and how to address the issue through policy reform.

In this …

The Boundaries Of Normative Law And Economics, Eric A. Posner Jan 2020

The Boundaries Of Normative Law And Economics, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Normative law and economics remains controversial decades after its emergence despite its successes in legal scholarship and its similarity to influential approaches in economics. The reason is that many of its proponents have exaggerated its value for policy while discounting other methods, tainting the enterprise. Normative law and economics as a method of policy analysis properly operates within narrow boundaries defined by its four main premises: (1) welfarism based on unrestricted preferences; (2) unimportance of distributional effects; (3) unimportance of impacts on non-welfare values; and (4) rational instrumental behavior of affected persons. Scholars have made progress in normative law and …

Rethinking Nudge: An Information-Costs Theory Of Default Rules, Oren Bar-Gill, Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2020

Rethinking Nudge: An Information-Costs Theory Of Default Rules, Oren Bar-Gill, Omri Ben-Shahar

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Policymakers and scholars – both lawyers and economists – have long been pondering the optimal design of default rules. From the classic works on “mimicking” defaults for contracts and corporations to the modern rush to set “sticky” default rules to promote policies as diverse as organ donations, retirement savings, consumer protection, and data privacy, the optimal design of default rules has featured as a central regulatory challenge. The key element driving the design is opt-out costs—how to minimize them, or alternatively how to raise them to make the default sticky. Much of the literature has focused on “mechanical” opt-out costs—the …

State Politics And Mortgage Markets, Brian D. Feinstein, Chen Meng, Manisha Padi Jan 2020

State Politics And Mortgage Markets, Brian D. Feinstein, Chen Meng, Manisha Padi

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This article examines whether elections for state offices that regulate mortgage lenders affect mortgage markets. Some scholars assert that election-related political uncertainty depresses economic activity; others contend that incumbents pursue policies to boost short-term growth prior to elections; and a third group claims that market activity fluctuates around partisan transitions. We test these theories using national data on mortgage characteristics and election data for two important state regulators. We first conduct event studies comparing mortgage market outcomes before and after elections. We then utilize difference-in-difference models to compare states in which partisan control of key offices switched following an election. …

Beyond Unreasonable, John D. Inazu Jan 2020

Beyond Unreasonable, John D. Inazu

Scholarship@WashULaw

The concept of “reasonableness” permeates the law: the “reasonable person” determines the outcome of torts and contracts disputes, the criminal burden of proof requires factfinders to reach conclusions “beyond a reasonable doubt,” and claims of self-defense succeed or fail on reasonableness determinations. But as any first-year law student can attest, the line between reasonable and unreasonable is not always clear. Nor is that the only ambiguity. In the realm of the unreasonable, many of us intuit that some actions are not only unreasonable but beyond the pale—we might say they are beyond unreasonable. Playing football, summiting Nanga Parbat, and attempting …

This foreword introduces "The Rise of Fintech," a series of essays published in a symposium issue of the Washington University Journal of Law & Policy. The contributions examine the structure of firms and markets, considering fintech activities occurring within existing firms and regulatory perimeters and activities that spill over the boundaries we currently take for granted. The contributors examine the emerging regulatory responses to fintech, taxonomizing them. They consider which regulatory approaches, or ecosystems, will best help fintech to develop. They examine how fintech applies to fundraising, examining initial coin offerings (ICOs) and equity crowdfunding, techniques that attract attention for …

Why Write? The Desuetude Of Article V And The Democratic Costs Of Informal Constitutional Amendment, Andrea Scoseria Katz Jan 2020

Why Write? The Desuetude Of Article V And The Democratic Costs Of Informal Constitutional Amendment, Andrea Scoseria Katz

Scholarship@WashULaw

In his classic Introduction to the Study of the Law of the Constitution, the great British constitutional scholar, Albert Venn Dicey likened the constitutional amendment power of the United States to a “a monarch who slumbers and sleeps.”1 It was during periods of constitutional amendment, Dicey explained, writing in 1897, that the full sovereign power of the nation came together out of the disparate fifty states, but these moments were few and far between.

Heads Of State And Other Government Officials Before The International Criminal Court: The Uneasy Revolution Continues, Leila Nadya Sadat Jan 2020

Heads Of State And Other Government Officials Before The International Criminal Court: The Uneasy Revolution Continues, Leila Nadya Sadat

Scholarship@WashULaw

This essay takes up the current debate about the relationship between article 27 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and article 98 of the Statute concerning the immunity of sitting Heads of State from investigation or prosecution before the Court and the duty of States to cooperate with the Court as regards their arrest and surrender. The essay traces the history of article 27 and its incorporation into the Statute and observes that it represents a rule of customary international law resting upon the adoption of the Nuremberg Principles after World War II, and reiterated in the …

Midair Refueling For Sensation Seeking? Pilot Ceos And Corporate Debt Contracting, Steven Freund, Tunde Kovacs, Nam H. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We examine the relation between chief executive officer (CEO) sensation seeking, which captures the desire for varied, novel, and complex personal sensations and experiences, and corporate debt contracting. Using pilot certificates as a proxy for the personality trait of sensation seeking, we find that firms with pilot CEOs use longer maturity debt financing even when long-term debt is more costly than short-term debt. Our findings are robust to controlling for the endogenous matching between firms and CEOs. Our evidence indicates that CEOs with sensation-seeking personality traits prefer long-term debt financing to avoid the liquidity risk associated with short-term debt financing …

Connecting The Dots: Avian Eggshell Pigmentation, Female Condition And Paternal Provisioning Effort, Kara E. Hodges, Nathan T. Mortimer, Alysia D. Vrailas-Mortimer, Scott K. Sakaluk, Charles F. Thompson

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Differences in avian eggshell pigmentation could be an honest signal of female quality that males use to inform their nestling provisioning effort. We investigated whether among-individual variation in protoporphyrin-based eggshell pigmentation in house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) reflects female fitness-associated traits and whether males use that information. Females laying lighter clutches were older and larger than females laying darker clutches. Nestlings hatching from lighter clutches had greater size-corrected mass on post-hatch day 11, a measure that strongly predicts survival and recruitment to the breeding population. To test whether male provisioning effort responds to clutch pigmentation, we used a reciprocal …

A Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm For Dynamic Graphs, Muteb Alshammari, Abdelmounaam Rezgui Jan 2020

A Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm For Dynamic Graphs, Muteb Alshammari, Abdelmounaam Rezgui

Faculty Publications - Information Technology

Graphs are mathematical structures used in many applications. In recent years, many applications emerged that require the processing of large dynamic graphs where the graph’s structure and properties change constantly over time. Examples include social networks, communication networks, transportation networks, etc. One of the most challenging problems in large scale dynamic graphs is the single-source shortest path (SSSP) problem. Traditional solutions (based on Dijkstra’s algorithms) to the SSSP problem do not scale to large dynamic graphs with a high change frequency. In this paper, we propose an efficient SSSP algorithm for large dynamic graphs. We first present our algorithm and …

Understanding Alzheimer’S Disease Knowledge In Low-Income, Richmond, Va Community Dwelling Older Adults, Taylor Wilkerson, Ann Rhodes, Jennifer Inker, Joann Richardson, Faika Zanjani

Graduate Research Posters

Background: Different populations of individuals demonstrate varying levels of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) knowledge, as well as commonly held misconceptions about the nature of the disease and its risk factors. Older adults often demonstrate lower scores on Alzheimer’s disease knowledge scales and African American adults are often specifically not aware of their higher Alzheimer’s risk status compared to other racial groups. In addition, African American older adults are more likely to receive the fewest AD interventions. Methods: We measured the Alzheimer’s knowledge of twenty community-dwelling elders at two separate time points (baseline and 6 month follow-up) as part of a larger …

Divergent Paths: An Analysis Of The Autonomous Future In Mclean County, Casey Peterson Jan 2020

Divergent Paths: An Analysis Of The Autonomous Future In Mclean County, Casey Peterson

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are expected to arrive on public roads in the mid-term future, but will vary in their uses and level of self-driving capabilities. On the heels of the rise of shared mobility services from transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft, the combination of these technologies has generated the anticipation of a diminishing need for private car ownership. The promises of when AVs will arrive has been somewhat tempered in recent years, allowing the public and stakeholders valuable time to more adequately plan for their arrival. A yet undetermined outcome is the influence these new technologies will have …

Prevalence And Predictors Of Chronic Pain Intensity And Disability Among Adults With Sickle Cell Disease, Nadine Matthie, Coretta Jenerette, Ashley Gibson, Sudeshna Paul, Melinda Higgins, Lakshmanan Krishnamurti

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Among 170 adults with sickle cell disease, we evaluated chronic pain impact and disability prevalence, assessed age and gender differences, and identified psychosocial predictors of chronic pain intensity and disability. Most participants had a high level of disability. Chronic pain intensity and disability were significantly associated with pain catastrophizing and chronic pain self-efficacy, and worsened with age. Further research is needed to confirm study findings and develop interventions, including palliative care approaches that address catastrophizing and disability, particularly for young women and middle-aged adults with sickle cell disease. Moreover, consistent clinical assessment of chronic pain and psychosocial health should be …

Burden Of Rare Deleterious Variants In Wnt Signaling Genes Among 511 Myelomeningocele Patients, Luke Hebert, Paul Hillman, Craig Baker, Michael Brown, Allison Ashley-Koch, James E Hixson, Alanna C Morrison, Hope Northrup, Kit Sing Au

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Genes in the noncanonical WNT signaling pathway controlling planar cell polarity have been linked to the neural tube defect myelomeningocele. We hypothesized that some genes in the WNT signaling network have a higher mutational burden in myelomeningocele subjects than in reference subjects in gnomAD. Exome sequencing data from 511 myelomeningocele subjects was obtained in-house and data from 29,940 ethnically matched subjects was provided by version 2 of the publicly available Genome Aggregation Database. To compare mutational burden, we collapsed rare deleterious variants across each of 523 human WNT signaling genes in case and reference populations. Ten WNT signaling genes were …
