Thermal / Structural Analysis Of The Hb 650 Thermal Shield, Gerald J. Smith

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Fermilab’s PIP-II project’s superconducting linear accelerator (Linac) will drive the next generation of particle accelerators through a revolution in beam intensity. Key to beam intensification are the high efficiencies of niobium-tin superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities operating at cryogenic temperatures near 5 Kelvin. A multifaceted approach is employed to achieve and maintain the extreme temperature. Vacuum provides the first barrier to thermal convection. Physical thermal intercept zones further isolate the exterior shell vacuum vessel at 300 Kelvin from the supercooled beamline. The first thermal intercept lies just inside the exterior vacuum vessel forming the 40 Kelvin zone. This 40K thermal shield …

Nonlinear Integrable Optics Beam Dynamics Experimentand Diagnostics, Sebastian Szustkowski Jan 2020

Nonlinear Integrable Optics Beam Dynamics Experimentand Diagnostics, Sebastian Szustkowski

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

All present circular particle accelerators are built around linear focusing optics. Unavoidable nonlinear elements appear in accelerators, such as magnetic aberrations and space-charge effects, which are typically corrected using nonlinear magnets. However, these added nonlinearities degrade particle beam stability, and in most cases, the system becomes non-integrable. The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), is a test bed to study beam dynamics in integrable lattices for both electron and proton beams, independently. This work presents experimental results of the nonlinear electron beam dynamics behavior in IOTA using an elliptical nonlinear magnet. The elliptical nonlinear magnet allows …

The problem of a point-like charged particle's self-interaction force has been a long-standing problem in the field of classical electrodynamics. For over a century, physicists have unsuccessfully developed a satisfactory solution until recently. We expand on the work done by Gralla et. al. in order to establish a smooth and relativistically correct formulation of point-like charged particles in motion and shed light on related problems and applications, particularly the motion of elementary particles with magnetic dipoles through non-uniform static magnetic fields. We conduct numerical simulations in order to quantify the magnitude of the perturbations from this self-force due to the …

Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy And Spin-Orbit Coupling Of Lanthanide Complexes, Yuchen Zhang Jan 2020

Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy And Spin-Orbit Coupling Of Lanthanide Complexes, Yuchen Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

The C-C and C-H bonds have high bond strength and low polarization, which make many small hydrocarbons too inert to react with other molecules under ambient pressure and temperature conditions. Therefore, activation of these bonds is required to convert such small molecules into other value-added chemicals. Among various bond activation methods, metal activation is widely used and reported in the literature, because of its relatively mild reaction conditions and high selectivity.

In this work, Ce atom reactions with several small hydrocarbons are carried out in a pulsed laser vaporization supersonic molecular beam source, and Ce -hydrocarbon species are observed with …

Towards The Rational Design Of Organic Semiconductors Through Computational Approaches, Qianxiang Ai Jan 2020

Towards The Rational Design Of Organic Semiconductors Through Computational Approaches, Qianxiang Ai

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Though organic semiconductors have illustrated potential as industry-relevant materials for electronics applications, there are few guidelines that can take one from molecular design to functional materials. This limitation is, in part, due to incomplete understanding as to how the atomic-scale construction of the π-conjugated molecules that comprise the organic semiconductors determines the nature and strength of both the noncovalent intramolecular interactions that govern molecular conformation and noncovalent intermolecular interactions that regulate the energetic preference for solid-state packing. Hence, there remain several fundamental questions that need to be resolved in order to design organic semiconductors from a priori knowledge, including: What …

Brain Development: Why The Young Sleep Longer, Budhaditya Chowdhury, Orie T. Shafer Jan 2020

Brain Development: Why The Young Sleep Longer, Budhaditya Chowdhury, Orie T. Shafer

Advanced Science Research Center

From absorbing new languages to mastering musical instruments, young children are wired to learn in ways that adults are not (Johnson and Newport, 1989). This ability coincides with periods of intense brain plasticity during which neurons can easily remodel their connections (Hubel and Wiesel, 1970). Many children are also scandalously good sleepers, typically getting several more hours of sleep per night than their parents (Jenni and Carskadon, 2007). As sleep deprivation has negative effects on learning and memory, learning like a child likely requires sleeping like one (Diekelmann and Born, 2010). Yet, how the ability to sleep for longer is …
