Association Between Medicaid Expansion Status And Lung Cancer Screening Exam Growth: Findings From The Acr Lung Cancer Registry., Neal Gupta, Ethan J. Halpern, Vijay M. Rao
Department of Radiology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: To determine if Medicaid expansion is associated with increased volumes of lung cancer screenings.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was performed to compare the annual growth rates in lung cancer screenings between states that expanded Medicaid (n = 31) versus those that did not (n = 17). Using the American College of Radiology Lung Cancer Screening Registry, we calculated the average annual growth rate between 2016 and 2019 for both groups. Secondary analyses between these two groups also included calculations of the percentages of studies considered appropriate by USPSTF criteria.
RESULTS: No significant difference was identified in the average annual …

When unoccupied by an explicit external task, humans engage in a wide range of different types of self-generated thinking. These are often unrelated to the immediate environment and have unique psychological features. Although contemporary perspectives on ongoing thought recognise the heterogeneity of these self-generated states, we lack both a clear understanding of how to classify the specific states, and how they can be mapped empirically. In the current study, we capitalise on advances in machine learning that allow continuous neural data to be divided into a set of distinct temporally re-occurring patterns, or states. We applied this technique to a …

Use Of Viscoplastic Damper For Improving The Resistance Of Steel Frames To Blast Loading, Gholamreza Abdollahzadeh, Hadi Faghihmaleki, Hamed Hamidi Jamnani, Atefeh Ebrahimi Bardar
Makara Journal of Technology
In this paper, we evaluated the effect of viscoplastic dampers on the response of steel frames under blast loading. We used SAP2000 software and link elements to investigate the responses of nine-story steel frames with and without dampers. The proposed viscoplastic damper is a new type of viscous damper. The application of this damper is based on the availability of its constituent materials. The damper acts as a viscoelastic damper at low levels of vibration, but it acts as a combination of viscoelastic operator and metal-yielding device at extreme levels of vibration. With respect to the height of the structure, …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a major advancement in cancer prevention and this primary prevention tool has the potential to reduce and eliminate HPV-associated cancers; however, the safety and efficacy of vaccines in general and the HPV vaccine specifically have come under attack, particularly through the spread of misinformation on social media. The popular social media platform Instagram represents a significant source of exposure to health (mis)information; 1 in 3 US adults use Instagram.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to characterize pro- and anti-HPV vaccine networks on Instagram, and to describe misinformation within the anti-HPV vaccine …
Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato
Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato
Theses
Multiple transposable elements have been identified by colocalization analysis that display a strong predicted regulatory relationship with p53 associated peaks. RNA-Seq was used to identify differentially expressed transposable elements. ChIP-Seq was used to identify peaks representing transcription factor binding sites in p53 activated cells. The results of both experiments were then combined in a colocalization analysis identifying transposable element locations that were both differentially regulated and located near p53 associated peaks. The colocalization of ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq analyses allows for the verification of p53’s regulatory role in the expression of transposable elements across the genome. A Monte Carlo simulation was …

Loss of functional small bowel surface area following surgical resection for disorders such as Crohn's disease, intestinal ischemic injury, radiation enteritis, and in children, necrotizing enterocolitis, atresia, and gastroschisis, may result in short bowel syndrome, with attendant high morbidity, mortality, and health care costs in the United States. Following resection, the remaining small bowel epithelium mounts an adaptive response, resulting in increased crypt cell proliferation, increased villus height, increased crypt depth, and enhanced nutrient and electrolyte absorption. Although these morphologic and functional changes are well described in animal models, the adaptive response in humans is less well understood. Clinically the …
The Effects Of Glycosylation On Immunogenicity And Replication Of Emerging Viral Pathogens, Elizabeth Carvosso Clarke
The Effects Of Glycosylation On Immunogenicity And Replication Of Emerging Viral Pathogens, Elizabeth Carvosso Clarke
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
For filoviruses, a family of hemorrhagic fever viruses, the main antigen for vaccines in development is the glycosylated glycoprotein GP1,2. How the glycosylation of GP1,2 differs when the protein is produced in different cell lines is unclear. We showed significant differences in the types of glycans conferred onto filovirus GP1,2s in produced in mammalian-origin and insect-origin cell lines. Mammalian-derived filovirus GP1,2s have diverse N-linked glycans and extensive O-linked glycans, whereas insect-derived filovirus GP1,2s have N-linked glycans that are primarily paucimannose type and have no observable O-linked glycans. We then showed that differences in glycosylation impacted how immunogenic the proteins were …

Care And Maintenance Of Dental Restorations, Ibeth Erazo
Publications and Research
Contributing to the longevity of the restoration by minimizing the effects of surface corrosion, maintaining the esthetic appearance and the smooth surface characterization, and contributing to gingival health by lessening the potential for plaque retention are the principal reasons for taking care of dental restorations. However, during oral hygiene routine procedures and prevention treatments, these desired effects are not always achieved. In many cases, the restorative materials are not identified in a patient’s record leading to damage during oral hygiene performance by dental professionals. Therefore, it is important to be able to recognize the different restorative materials and employ the …

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
Drawing from two qualitative case studies, one researching how teachers teach about war to the children of soldiers and the other examining how teachers teach lynching near historic lynching sites, this critical phenomenological study weighs how much horror and how much hope should be taught if the aim of the instruction is a liberating education. The author argues that a balance of both is necessary. Students cannot be left in the hopelessness of knowledge alone but must be taught how to engage their world with the possibility of making change.

With the proliferation of students’ abilities to use technology, in particular virtual reality (VR) applications, teachers are experimenting with VR in virtual learning environments (VLE) to engage students; but clear ethics and safety guidelines are not available. Within the field of education additional research is needed to determine how VR is employed in VLEs. Additionally, what are the decision-making processes of educators for the VR programs chosen for classroom use based on ethics and student safety? Through qualitative inquiry, educators from K–12 and higher education shared their perceptions of ethics and safety concerns in VR applications for use in the …
Use Of Ad-Hoc Metrics To Identify Code Revision That Introduced Anomalies, Noah A. Brubaker
Use Of Ad-Hoc Metrics To Identify Code Revision That Introduced Anomalies, Noah A. Brubaker
Defensive Publications Series
Large-scale software codebases are updated frequently by a large number of developers, leading to a large number of code revisions. It is difficult to identify the exact code revision at which an undesirable behavior (bug or culprit) was introduced, since there may be numerous subsequent changes to the codebase prior to detection of the undesirable behavior. This disclosure describes a general-purpose culprit finder that streamlines and automates the detection of a behavioral change to software code. In particular, the described techniques enable quick determination of the exact code revision that introduced a bug. An ad-hoc signal is defined that numerically …

Electric control of magnetism in magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroics is expected to have a significant impact on a wide range of technological applications. Here, we predict the modulation of magnetism in ultrathin platinum films due to the ferroelectric polarization of the BaTiO3 substrate, which along with biaxial strain changes the density of states at the Fermi energy. We demonstrate that both the magnitude and direction of the magnetization depend strongly on the polarization direction and/or strain. This leads to an unprecedented ME effect involving a giant change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy under polarization switching due to the large spin-orbit coupling of …
