Exploring The Meaning Of A Rural Mind-Body Medicine Group Curriculum From The Perspectives Of Community-Based Participants, Joanne Marie Riegert

Human Development and Family Science

The challenges and stress that are present in our daily lives can be consuming and are often associated with chronic illnesses and mental health concerns. In rural communities, residents may experience greater exposure to a range of potentially traumatic events at both a personal and community level (Handley et al., 2015). Additionally, in many rural areas, the availability of health services is a significant issue. One emerging approach utilized to treat the increasing numbers of chronic illnesses and trauma-related mental health problems in a rural population is the integration of meditation skills presented in a group setting, to counterbalance the …

Use Agreements And Economic Performance Of U.S. Airports, Fecri Karanki Jan 2020

Use Agreements And Economic Performance Of U.S. Airports, Fecri Karanki

Transportation Logistics and Finance

In the U.S., airport use agreements are developed based on three common rate-setting approaches: the residual, compensatory, and hybrid methods. Under a residual agreement, the financial risk of the host airport is borne by the signatory airlines, and in return, the signatory airlines pay reduced user fees. Under a compensatory agreement, however, the airport bears its own financial risks and offers no reduced user fees to airlines. A hybrid agreement combines the features of residual and compensatory agreements. Under a hybrid agreement, the airport usually bears its own financial risks in terminal operations while the signatory airlines take over the …

Four cover crops species, Austrian pea (Pisum sativum L.), winter rye (Secale cereale L.), winter camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz], and brown mustard (Brassica juncea L.), were examined. First interseeding resulted in significantly higher cover crop biomass than second interseeding. In 2018, the highest recoverable sugar yield was observed with pea (13.9 Mg ha-1) and camelina (6.6 Mg ha-1) first-interseeded, …

Institutionalizing The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention's Independence, Dorit R. Reiss Jan 2020

Institutionalizing The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention's Independence, Dorit R. Reiss

Faculty Scholarship

The United States' response to the COVID-19 pandemic was sub optimal. One problem in it was the politicization of the public health response. One aspect of that politicization was aggressive political intervention in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) efforts to provide guidance and help pandemic response. The concern was strong enough that four previous CDC Directors, in an unusual step, published an op-ed calling out political intervention in the CDC. This article proposes two changes to strengthen the CDC's institutional independence: codifying the CDC's role in preventing diseases and reducing harms in a statute, and restructuring …

Mechanics Of Surface Instabilities Of Soft Nanofibers And Nonlinear Contacts Of Hydrogels, Mojtaba Ahmadi Jan 2020

Mechanics Of Surface Instabilities Of Soft Nanofibers And Nonlinear Contacts Of Hydrogels, Mojtaba Ahmadi

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

The research of this dissertation is formulated in two fields, i.e., the theoretical and computational studies of circumferential wrinkling on soft nanofibers and the swelling mechanics study of a bi-layered spherical hydrogel containing a hard core. Continuous polymer nanofibers have been massively produced by means of the low-cost, top-down electrospinning technique. As a unique surface instability phenomenon, surface wrinkling in circumferential direction is commonly observed on soft nanofibers in electrospinning. In this study, a theoretical continuum mechanics model is developed to explore the mechanisms of circumferential wrinkling on soft nanofibers under uniaxial stretching. The model is able to examine the …

Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson Jan 2020

Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson

Nursing

Childhood obesity is an extensive problem in the United States and North Dakota (CDC, 2014). Significant health consequences are linked to obesity, including type two diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and psychological disorders (Pandita et al., 2016; Xu & Mishra, 2018). Obesity comorbidities, previously presented in later adulthood, now emerge in younger populations (Pandita et al., 2016). Unfortunately, treatment of obesity is not effective, and therefore, prevention must be the primary focus (Daniels et al., 2015; Pandita et al., 2016). Diet and eating behaviors have a significant impact on weight, and children develop taste preferences and lifelong eating behaviors …

A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink Jan 2020

A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink

Nursing

In 2019, there were about seventy-million Americans with uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HTN) (Kitt, Fox, Tucker & McManus, 2019). Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide (Stephen, Halcomb, McInnes, Batterham & Zwar, 2019). Uncontrolled HTN contributes to stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal failure, and is the most modifiable risk factor for heart disease and death (American Academy of Family Physicians [AAFP], 2019; Oparil & Schmider, 2015). Patients living in rural America have an increased prevalence of HTN and their access to preventative health services is lower (Buford, 2016; Caldwell, Ford, Wallace, Wang & Takahashi, 2016). …

Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz Jan 2020

Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz

Nursing

Type 1 diabetes is a life-long chronic condition that typically presents in childhood, and approximately 193,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. Additionally, approximately 20-30% of adolescents with Type 1 diabetes have disordered eating behaviors or eating disorders. A common way disordered eating manifests in Type 1 diabetes is through manipulation of insulin dosages to promote hyperglycemia and subsequent weight loss. Disordered eating in diabetes can lead to short term complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycemia, and chronic long-term health conditions arising from complications of uncontrolled diabetes. Identification and screening …

Identifying Barriers To Preventive/Primary Care Utilization Of Men In A Rural Setting, Shaun Earl Seibold Jan 2020

Identifying Barriers To Preventive/Primary Care Utilization Of Men In A Rural Setting, Shaun Earl Seibold

Nursing

The purpose of the project was to identify barriers preventing men living in a rural setting, ages 19-60 from participating in routine preventative/primary care. Nationally and globally, men experience greater rates of morbidity and mortality due to chronic illness (Xu, Murphy, Kochanek, Bastian, & Arius, 2018). The literature suggests men do not routinely engage in primary care services (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015). The lack of participation leads to men experiencing poorer health outcomes (Banks & Baker, 2013; Baker & Shand, 2017; Pinkashov et al., 2013). Consistent and early access to primary care will help reduce the …

University-Based Teacher Residencies In Texas: Advanced Clinical Training For Preservice Candidates, Val Hill-Jackson, Diana Wandix-White, Taylor Gilley Jan 2020

University-Based Teacher Residencies In Texas: Advanced Clinical Training For Preservice Candidates, Val Hill-Jackson, Diana Wandix-White, Taylor Gilley

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications (Archived)

Teacher education residencies are an innovative but underutilized clinical teaching practice. Perhaps the reason that university-based teacher preparation programs (TPPs) do not employ residencies more broadly may be due to the lack of clarity about what they are and how they add value to the clinical teaching experience. To address this issue, we begin this article with a brief history of teacher residencies. Second, a typology is offered to help demystify the teacher residency as a type of advanced field experience. We demonstrate the similarities and differences between traditional clinical teaching and a residency for TPP, and then frame the …

Between Sea And Steppe: A Historical Foray In Three Parts, Asha Marie Pogge Jan 2020

Between Sea And Steppe: A Historical Foray In Three Parts, Asha Marie Pogge

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

Examinations into marine environmental history, Great Plains environmental history, and the city of Odessa, Ukraine, demonstrate these three areas have strong methodological and topical foundations and even stronger potential for future scholarship. Marine environmental history is a growing sub-field that necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to both situate the ocean as an active and dynamic participant in human history and allow it a history in its own right. Great Plains environmental history incorporates many kinds of scholarship including creative works—like those of novelist Will Cather—that shape historical memory as surely as they include marginalized perspectives. Finally, the city of Odessa, Ukraine, …

Improving Low Health Literacy In Poststroke Patients By Educating The Health Care Staff, Marthilde Brzycki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Lack of health literacy in the poststroke patient population is a serious issue; with the addition of the homeless population to that group, the result may be devastating. According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA, 2016), stroke is considered the primary cause of death and one of the chief reasons for disability in the United States, and nearly75% of strokes occur in those who are 65 years of age or older. Nurse practitioners are vital, providing necessary training and stroke education to the nursing and other health care staff. This DNP project was initiated to …

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In regions with long cold overcast winters and sunny summers, Deep Direct-Use (DDU) can be coupled with Reservoir Thermal Energy Storage (RTES) technology to take advantage of pre-existing subsurface permeability to save summer heat for later use during cold seasons. Many aquifers worldwide are underlain by permeable regions (reservoirs) containing brackish or saline groundwater that has limited beneficial use due to poor water quality. We investigate the utility of these relatively deep, slow flowing reservoirs for RTES by conducting an integrated feasibility study in the Portland Basin, Oregon, USA, developing methods and obtaining results that can be widely applied to …
