The Impact Of Special Interest Groups On The Federal Dietary Guidelines: Consequences For American Health, Dory Mcmillan Dec 2020

The Impact Of Special Interest Groups On The Federal Dietary Guidelines: Consequences For American Health, Dory Mcmillan

School of Professional Studies

This research paper explores the impact of relationships between lobbyists and both the USDA and HSS, and the impact these relationships have on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans that the agencies work together to create. The paper focuses specifically on the information the guidelines present in regard to red meat consumption, and the impacts this may have on American health, and healthcare costs associated. It was hypothesized that a relationship would be found between special interest groups and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and/or the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Research found there was a relationship between special …

The Killingly Mascot Case Study, Jordan Lumpkins Dec 2020

The Killingly Mascot Case Study, Jordan Lumpkins

School of Professional Studies

In the summer of 2019, in Killingly, Connecticut the local Board of Education voted to retire the "Redmen" mascot name it had used for nearly a century. This legislation was widely opposed and received extensive media coverage. Within a few months, the town experienced a massive political referendum where several local Board of Education members and Councilmen were replaced by single issue politicians promising to reinstate the "Redmen" name. Now holding a majority on the Board of Education, these Board members made Killingly the first school in U.S. history to reinstate a mascot after being deemed "derogatory."

It is the …

[Accepted Version] Inclusion Of Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities And Postsecondary Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review, Joshua Taylor, Magen Rooney-Kron, Holly Whittenburg, Colleen Thoma, Lauren Avellone, Hannah Seward

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The purpose of this systematic literature review was to examine the association between inclusive education and postsecondary outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Despite decades-long advocacy efforts, most individuals with IDD never achieve meaningful paid employment or enroll in postsecondary education after graduation from high school. Although educational and workforce legislation has emphasized both inclusive education and competitive integrated employment for youth with IDD, no previous reviews have examined the strength of evidence for the former as a pathway to positive postsecondary outcomes. This systematic literature review searched peer-reviewed articles published between 1997 and 2018. A total …

Identifying Signs Of Human Trafficking In Healthcare Settings: A Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Baldwin Dec 2020

Identifying Signs Of Human Trafficking In Healthcare Settings: A Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Baldwin

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Human trafficking is the commercial trade of human beings for profit, and it is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. There are an estimated 40 million people that are trapped in this modern day slavery (National Human Trafficking Hotline, 2020). In the United States, over 86% of trafficking survivors reported accessing healthcare at some point during their trafficking situation (Lederer & Wetzel, 2014). Healthcare workers are on the front lines of battling this crime, as they have a vital role in identifying signs of trafficking in their patients. This review evaluates ways in which healthcare workers can screen …

Living On Campus Is Beneficial: Studying The Impact Of Student Involvement Through Living-Learning Communities, Stephen R. Mccay Dec 2020

Living On Campus Is Beneficial: Studying The Impact Of Student Involvement Through Living-Learning Communities, Stephen R. Mccay

Dissertations

Since the early days of higher education, living-learning communities have been beneficial for student success, involvement, and retention. A living-learning community can be studied using the following as a basic definition for this research: a group of students living together who have a purpose of focusing on learning outside the classroom and that interacts with the institution’s staff, who assist with the students’ holistic development. Research suggests that students who are involved and those who live on campus have greater academic success and are more likely to return for their next academic semester. Astin’s involvement theory explores the interactions between …

Nondestructive Evaluation (Nde) Of Additively Manufactured Metal (Amm) Parts Using Ultrasonic Testing (Ut), Austin M. Thomas

Master's Theses

Additive manufacturing is a category of emerging manufacturing processes that have applications in creating metal components with high value and complexity. The adoption of these parts is limited by the lack of fully developed nondestructive techniques for identifying internal defects. The use of ultrasonic testing for detecting and measuring internal features in additively manufactured metal parts is investigated. A low-cost ultrasonic immersion testing system was designed, constructed, and validated for the inspection of an additively manufactured titanium specimen with artificial defects as well as other metal artifacts. An ultrasound calibration block was additively manufactured from stainless steel type 316L and …

A Colonized Cop: Indigenous Exclusion And Youth Climate Justice Activism At The United Nations Climate Change Negotiations, Corrie Grosse, Brigid Mark

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Youth activists around the world are demanding urgent climate action from elected leaders. The annual United Nations climate change negotiations, known as COPs, are key sites of global organizing and hope for a comprehensive approach to climate policy. Drawing on participant observation and in-depth interviews at COP25 in 2019, this research examines youth climate activists’ priorities, frustrations and hopes for creating just climate policy. Youth are disillusioned with the COP process and highlight a variety of ways through which the COP perpetuates colonial power structures that marginalize Indigenous peoples and others fighting for justice. This is intersectional exclusion - the …

Umuwi: Coming Home: Decolonizing Filipinx-American Identity, Theresa Joyce Esmejarda Arocena

Communication & Media Studies | Senior Theses

This study investigates Filipinx-American identity using contextual understandings of decolonization as a conceptual framework. We will explore some of the long-term consequences of colonization on identity in the Filipinx-American community, including labeling theory’s current psychologies within the community, the formation of certain ideologies, and the attempts to reconcile transgenerational trauma and dismantle negative ideologies within the community. Seven participants were selected through non-probability sampling and were interviewed individually over Zoom video conferencing. Participant interviews revealed five interconnected themes regarding how identity is formed and sustained. Given the complexity of identity, more research is needed to explain other nuances of the …

Robo-advisors have surged in popularity in recent years and have been attracting more and more attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, we examine the factors that attribute to investors’ decision to adopt Robo-advisor and test how Robo-advisor affects investors’ trading behavior by using a unique account-level dataset from a major China’s financial institution.

We first compare the characteristics of users and non-users of Robo-advisor. We show that investors with more diversified portfolios and less assets under management, and female investors are more likely to invest in …

The Thickness Of Blood: Article I, Section 7, Law Enforcement, And Commercial Dna Databases, Hannah Parman Dec 2020

The Thickness Of Blood: Article I, Section 7, Law Enforcement, And Commercial Dna Databases, Hannah Parman

Washington Law Review

Law enforcement agencies increasingly use online commercial and open source DNA databases to identify suspects in cases that have long since gone cold. By uploading crime scene DNA to one of these websites, investigators can find family members who have used the website and build a family tree leading back to the owner of the original DNA. This is called “familial DNA searching.” The highest profile use of this investigative method to date occurred in California, but law enforcement in Washington State has been quick to begin utilizing the method as well. However, article I, section 7 of the Washington …

Gastroenteritis accounts for nearly 500,000 deaths in children younger than 5 years annually. Although probiotics have been touted as having the potential to expedite diarrhea resolution, recent clinical trials question their effectiveness. A potential explanation is a shift in pathogens following the introduction of a rotavirus vaccine. Here, we report the results of a multi-center, double-blind trial of 816 children with acute gastroenteritis who completed follow-up and provided multiple stool specimens. Participants were randomized to receive a probiotic containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillushelveticus or placebo. We report no virus-specific beneficial effects attributable to the probiotic, either in reducing clinical symptoms …

Md2 Activation By Direct Age Interaction Drives Inflammatory Diabetic Cardiomyopathy, Yi Wang, Wu Luo, Jibo Han, Zia A. Khan, Qilu Fang, Yiyi Jin, Xuemei Chen, Yali Zhang

Paediatrics Publications

Hyperglycemia activates toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) to induce inflammation in diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, the mechanisms of TLR4 activation remain unclear. Here we examine the role of myeloid differentiation 2 (MD2), a co-receptor of TLR4, in high glucose (HG)- and diabetes-induced inflammatory cardiomyopathy. We show increased MD2 in heart tissues of diabetic mice and serum of human diabetic subjects. MD2 deficiency in mice inhibits TLR4 pathway activation, which correlates with reduced myocardial remodeling and improved cardiac function. Mechanistically, we show that HG induces extracellular advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which bind directly to MD2, leading to formation of AGEs-MD2-TLR4 complex …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid plaques and progressive cerebral atrophy. Here, we report FAM222A as a putative brain atrophy susceptibility gene. Our cross-phenotype association analysis of imaging genetics indicates a potential link between FAM222A and AD-related regional brain atrophy. The protein encoded by FAM222A is predominantly expressed in the CNS and is increased in brains of patients with AD and in an AD mouse model. It accumulates within amyloid deposits, physically interacts with amyloid-β (Aβ) via its N-terminal Aβ binding domain, and facilitates Aβ aggregation. Intracerebroventricular infusion or forced expression of this protein exacerbates neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction …

© 2020, The Author(s). In humans and macaque monkeys, socially relevant face processing is accomplished via a distributed functional network that includes specialized patches in frontal cortex. It is unclear whether a similar network exists in New World primates, who diverged ~35 million years from Old World primates. The common marmoset is a New World primate species ideally placed to address this question given their complex social repertoire. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a putative high-level face processing network in marmosets. Like Old World primates, marmosets show differential activation in anterior cingulate and lateral prefrontal cortices while they view …

Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman Dec 2020

Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman

Doctoral Projects

Endotracheal intubation is an essential component within the skill set of anesthesia providers. Rapid arterial desaturation remains a primary risk factor during laryngoscopy and intubation. The risk for hypoxemia exists because during endotracheal intubation, patients are apneic or hypo-ventilating (Wong et al., 2017). Apneic oxygenation (AO) has been advocated to attenuate hypoxemia during endotracheal intubation (Pavlov et al., 2017).

The aim of this project was to assess for any knowledge deficits regarding AO among anesthesia providers and assess the willingness of these providers to include AO into their current practice. The project investigator conducted an education session involving the …

Using Collaborative Objective Simulation Clinical Evaluation With Undergraduate Nursing Students And Nurse Anesthesia Students Labor Epidural Placement In An Active Labor Patient, Chaka K. Jackson, Aisha Pierre

Doctoral Projects

Developing interdisciplinary teamwork and patient communication skills are essential for the student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA) to provide quality patient care when administering epidural anesthesia. The synthesis of the evidence revealed limited available information on simulation use for SRNA epidural administration and collaboration. This doctoral project examined the effectiveness of learning through traditional simulation to enhance communication and collaboration between the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) students. The BSN and NAP students were provided with a simulation environment to care for a laboring patient while improving patient safety and quality outcomes. The project …

Uniform Clinical Evaluation For Video Laryngoscopy In Nurse Anesthesia Training: A Policy Proposal, Kristen Yelverton Dec 2020

Uniform Clinical Evaluation For Video Laryngoscopy In Nurse Anesthesia Training: A Policy Proposal, Kristen Yelverton

Doctoral Projects

At The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP), no standardized clinical evaluation for video laryngoscopy (VL) use exists. To address the gap in standardized evaluation of VL, an evidence-based, objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) will be developed and proposed to the USM NAP. The intervention to this need is the evaluation of the OSCE and supporting documents by the panel of experts. The aim of the OSCE would be to teach SRNAs in a step-by-step process how to properly handle a video laryngoscope and the necessary techniques to ensure both patient and student safety (Wunder et al., …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Trauma Informed Care Training For Mental Health Nurses, Felicia Gathings Dec 2020

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Trauma Informed Care Training For Mental Health Nurses, Felicia Gathings

Doctoral Projects

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that happened to a person at a young age, and when untreated they have a higher risk of developing a mental illness. ACEs are associated with social problems, illnesses, and physiological issues. ACEs are related to increased health risks and an increase in high-risk behaviors. Despite increase evidence relating ACEs to physical and mental issues, nurses lack training in ACEs and trauma-informed care (TIC). The overall goal of this project was to increase knowledge of ACEs and TIC in mental health nurses when caring for mentally ill patients. Pre-test and Post-test surveys were …

A Best Practice Recommendation: Decreasing Perioperative Fentanyl Used Through The Utilization Of Dexmedetomidine Prior To Surgical Incision, Shelby Harriel, Amy Houck Dec 2020

A Best Practice Recommendation: Decreasing Perioperative Fentanyl Used Through The Utilization Of Dexmedetomidine Prior To Surgical Incision, Shelby Harriel, Amy Houck

Doctoral Projects

Upon anesthesia induction, patients often receive fentanyl, an opioid medication that is linked to addiction, dependence, morbidity, and mortality (Stanley, 2014). The goal of this practice recommendation was to propose an alternative way of managing pain and the increased sympathetic response in the perioperative setting, specifically during the induction phase, through evaluating published research. A possible substitute for fentanyl is a drug called dexmedetomidine (Precedex™). Through a comparison of pharmacology, indications, risks, and benefits, one can conclude that if Precedex™ is given prior to induction, in the place of large doses of fentanyl, it can potentially achieve a smoother intraoperative …

Improving Door To Transfer Times For St Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction In Small Emergency Departments: A Quality Performance Improvement Project, Amber Ryals Dec 2020

Improving Door To Transfer Times For St Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction In Small Emergency Departments: A Quality Performance Improvement Project, Amber Ryals

Doctoral Projects

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2020). ST-elevation myocardial infarctions are around 38% of all coronary syndrome patients that present to the emergency department (Akbar et al., 2020). Smaller, outlying facilities can be at a disadvantage due to the lack of readily available specialties and services, such as a cardiac catheterization laboratory, which has the potential to cause a delay in inpatient care. With standardized cardiac protocols in place at many facilities, initial identification and treatment of myocardial infarctions are begun long before a patient enters a facility, often …

Educating Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist On Malignant Hyperthermia Using An Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Ednita Street Fountain, Faith Sherman Dec 2020

Educating Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist On Malignant Hyperthermia Using An Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Ednita Street Fountain, Faith Sherman

Doctoral Projects

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a low-frequency, high-impact event that many student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) may be unprepared to manage due to limited exposure in clinical practice (Hackl et al., 1990). Lack of preparation for dealing with such low frequency, high impact events can lead to unfortunate adverse events resulting in death (Hackl et al., 1990). Thus, students should be are prepared to handle these situations if an event should occur.

An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a structured method used to assess certain skills and underpinning knowledge required for practice (Harden & Gleeson, 1979). Students are allowed to …
