Data, Politics And Public Health: Covid-19 Data-Driven Decision Making In Public Discourse, Teresa M. Harrison, Theresa A. Prado Dec 2020

Data, Politics And Public Health: Covid-19 Data-Driven Decision Making In Public Discourse, Teresa M. Harrison, Theresa A. Prado

Publications, Issue Briefs, Reports, Etc

In spring 2020, New York City became the acknowledged epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. To keep residents informed, Governor Cuomo conducted a streak of 111 daily press briefings reporting critical information about the status of the pandemic in the State at large, and New York City in particular. We show that through these briefings Governor Cuomo introduced an audience of New Yorkers and others to concepts basic to data-driven decision making such as data, science, models, and projections, and in so doing claimed that his decisions were unrelated to politics or whim. But we further suggest …

Co-Designing Teacher Residencies: Sharing Leadership, Finding New Opportunities, Matt Miller, Steph Strachan

Prepared to Teach

This report focuses on how a group of university teacher educators at Western Washington University’s Elementary Education program and district administrators at Ferndale School District reconsidered their approach to teacher preparation. Instead of viewing preparation as primarily the University’s responsibility, the partnership placed the needs of P-12 students and the district at the forefront of considerations, while also honoring a parallel goal enhancing the preparation experience.

The report describes the successful outcomes of the work, including revisions to the residency like work opportunities, a revised placement process, a district “on-boarding” process, and responsive professional development throughout the residency. Finally, you …

The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells Dec 2020

The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells

XULAneXUS

Since slavery, African Americans have been negatively impacted by Eurocentric beauty standards in America which favors the White majority. This has caused for natural hair to be discriminated against for centuries. As time has passed, African Americans have learned to appreciate their culture, beauty, and hair. The Natural Hair Movement on social media has improved society’s view on natural hair, but Eurocentric beauty standards are still very much present on all media platforms. I hypothesize that a lot of time spent on social media negatively influences views on natural hair compared to non-natural hair on African American women. Participants are …

Access Services: Not Waving, But Drowning, Max Bowman, Monica Samsky

Faculty Scholarship

Examining the chasm between access services staff and “the rest of the library” is illustrative of the divisions of labor that exist throughout the library. The chapter is an exploration of the effects of siloing and hierarchies in library staffing. The effort to elevate the work of the library within the academy has resulted in a troubling stratification of labor and devaluing of certain kinds of work within libraries.

In this paper, a mathematical model of the operation process of the ZigBee standard wireless network for remote monitoring systems based on the Markov chain apparatus was developed. Using the model was evaluated of the operation process of the CSMA/CA algorithm of the MAC level of the IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee standard. The peculiarity of this mathematical model is that it takes into account the level of loading of network elements and potential distortions in the transmitted packets as a result of the influence of interference. Using the developed mathematical model, the main characteristics of the network operation process, such as …

A Study Of Familial And Cultural Factors Which Contributed To Degree Attainment For Nine South Texas Latinas, Maria Mendez Dec 2020

A Study Of Familial And Cultural Factors Which Contributed To Degree Attainment For Nine South Texas Latinas, Maria Mendez

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. The Latino population is the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States. While Latino college enrollment is increasing, and dropout rates are decreasing, Latinas continue to trail behind Whites in college education and degree attainment. Latina degree attainment is half of White students, and the trend has continued since 2000 (Barshay, 2018; Harris & Tienda, 2012; Pew Research, 2019). The first step in correcting a problem is to recognize that the problem exists (Escobedo, 1980). Underrepresentation of Latinas in education has been an issue that has been addressed, but until the last few decades, corrective …

How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman Dec 2020

How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman

Theses & Dissertations

By just about any measure, organizations today are more dynamic, diverse, and interdependent than at any other time in history. This environment puts unprecedented pressure on the human capacity to lead. And still, we demand more from our leaders—even as employees experience rising stress levels, declining loyalty, and deteriorating trust in their employers, and organizations face historically high rates of employee turnover along with the resulting financial and emotional costs. Clinging to romanticized notions of the larger-than-life leader blinds us to the paradoxical promise of humility; namely, that a leader’s greatest strength may lie, ironically, in the ability …

Case Description: The patient was a 34-year-old, left hand dominant, white male …

Physical Therapy Emphasizing Progressive Weight Bearing And Gait Training Following Chopart Amputation In A Patient With Diabetes: A Case Report, Spenser Lynass

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: A Chopart amputation occurs at the Chopart joint that separates the midfoot from the hindfoot and often results from infection secondary to diabetic neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease. However, little research has been done to establish optimal rehabilitation protocols following surgery. The purpose of this case report was to describe a successful initial outpatient physical therapy intervention program that focuses on progressive weight bearing and gait training for a patient with diabetes who underwent Chopart amputation. Case Description: …

This condition may lead to neurogenic claudication which often results in significant pain and disability. Due to the negative impact on quality of life, surgical intervention is often utilized to reduce symptoms. However, post-surgical management is highly variable. The purpose of this case report was to examine a rehabilitation program used to address functional limitations and reverse impairments in a patient with severe deconditioning due to neurogenic claudication as a result …
