Microbial Dark Matter Coming To Light: Challenges And Opportunities, Jian Yu Jiao, Lan Liu, Zheng Shuang Hua, Bao Zhu Fang, En Min Zhou, Nimaichand Salam, Brian P. Hedlund, Wen Jun Li

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Microbes are the most abundant and diverse cellular life forms on Earth and colonize a wide range of environmental niches. However, more than 99% of bacterial and archaeal species have not been obtained in pure culture [1] and we have only glimpsed the surface of this mysterious microbial world. This is so-called Microbial Dark Matter (MDM): the enormous diversity of yet-uncultivated microbes that microbiologists can only study by using cultivation-independent techniques. Recently, a number of international projects have dramatically increased our understanding of the extent and distribution of microbial diversity, including the Global Catalogue of Microorganisms (GCM), the Genomic Encyclopedia …

High School Students As Citizen Scientists To Decrease Radon Exposure, Ellen J. Hahn, Craig Wilmhoff, Mary Kay Rayens, Nicholas B. Conley, Emily Morris, Angela Larck, Trista Allen, Susan M. Pinney

Nursing Faculty Publications

Residents in rural Kentucky (KY) and suburban Ohio (OH) expressed concerns about radon exposure and lung cancer. Although 85% of lung cancer cases are caused by tobacco smoke, radon exposure accounts for 10–15% of lung cancer cases. Academic and community members from the University of KY and the University of Cincinnati developed and pilot-tested a family-centered, youth-engaged home radon testing toolkit. The radon toolkit included radon information, and how to test, interpret, and report back findings. We educated youth as citizen scientists and their teachers in human subjects protection and home radon testing using the toolkit in the classroom. Youth …

Personality, Online Learning, And Covid-19, Dareen Christabel, Hannah Fields, Sarah M. Krysl, Mariah Rodriguez

Student Work

While characteristics of in-person learning versus online learning and the impact of personality on academic success have been studied, the nature of these variables in the context of a stressful event like the COVID-19 pandemic remains undetermined. This quantitative correlational survey analysis investigated 133 participants’ prior online learning experience and neuroticism levels, via the Big Five personality test, to examine relationships between those two variables and the variables of perceived learning, change in GPA, and perceived lost learning during COVID-19. Researchers found no significant correlations or effects between any of these variables. Researchers concluded that while the variables in question …

Investigating Late Paleozoic Tectonic Deformation Of The Western Highland Rim, Tennessee, Tyler John Myrman Dec 2020

Investigating Late Paleozoic Tectonic Deformation Of The Western Highland Rim, Tennessee, Tyler John Myrman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Western Highland Rim (WHR) of Tennessee is located between the Nashville Dome to the east and the Mississippi Embayment to the west. This region is situated inside the bend of the Appalachian-Ouachita orogen along the eastern margin of the Laurentian craton, making it a location of intrigue for structural analysis. Far-field and local stresses have deformed the WHR across multiple Eras. In the Paleozoic, the Appalachian (east of WHR) and Ouachita (south of WHR) orogenies were both thrusting onto the Laurentian craton. Mesoscale structures recorded in the WHR indicate shortening direction history of these tectonic stresses, how many pulses …

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin Dec 2020

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Categorical perception (CP) of speech is a complex process reflecting individuals’ ability to perceive sound and is measured using response time (RT). The cognitive processes involved in mapping neural activities to behavioral response are stochastic and further compounded by individuality and variations. This thesis presents a data-driven approach and develops parameter optimized models to understand the relationship between cognitive events and behavioral response (e.g., RT). We introduce convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn the representation from EEG recordings. In addition, we develop parameter optimized and interpretable models in decoding CP using two representations: 1) spatial-spectral topomaps and 2) evoked response …

Constraints And Affordances Of Online Engagement With Scientific Information—A Literature Review, Friederike Hendriks, Elisabeth Mayweg-Paus, Mark Felton, Kalypso Iordanou, Regina Jucks, Maria Zimmermann

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Many urgent problems that societies currently face—from climate change to a global pandemic—require citizens to engage with scientific information as members of democratic societies as well as to solve problems in their personal lives. Most often, to solve their epistemic aims (aims directed at achieving knowledge and understanding) regarding such socio-scientific issues, individuals search for information online, where there exists a multitude of possibly relevant and highly interconnected sources of different perspectives, sometimes providing conflicting information. The paper provides a review of the literature aimed at identifying (a) constraints and affordances that scientific knowledge and the online information environment entail …

Fourier-Plane Spot Array Generation Using Lon-Exchanged Diffraction Grating: Experimental And Theoretical Study., Ahmed Shaban Samara

Mansoura Engineering Journal

In This paper, we have employed a double-ion exchanged diffraction grating, to generate experimentally Fourier spot plane arrays. The grating-length-to-beam-width ratio (d/w0) is found to be an important parameter in determining device performance. With beam width 20μm (W0=20μm), center wavelength of λ=0.6328μm, and changing in interaction length (d) and incident angle several basic results are predicted. We compared our results with the numerical solution using fast Fourier transform beam propagation method (FFT. BPM) and there is a good agreement between them.

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses the academic agency of refugee-background individuals who have resettled to the United States of America and the responsibility of higher education to value refugee-background learners as knowledge creators. Contrary to deficit thinking that views learners as unable to succeed due to their refugee background, this study explores how their experiences demonstrate their multiple capacities to succeed in higher education. The essence of these experiences is presented using self-reflexive collaborative speaking and writing inquiry. Three main themes drawn from the results were the capacities of refugee-background learners to adapt cultures, maintain multiple social connections, and exercise agency.

The Adaptations Of Immigrant Chinese American Mothers' Parenting With Their Reticent Young Children, Allie Sharp Dec 2020

The Adaptations Of Immigrant Chinese American Mothers' Parenting With Their Reticent Young Children, Allie Sharp

Family Perspectives

Maternal warmth, or the expression of affection to a child by their mother both physically and emotionally, can play a critical role in encouraging healthy social development among reticent children, meaning children who are less likely to be social with their peers. However, recent research is beginning to recognize that this maternal warmth, which was typically defined as an open expression of affection, may look differently in other cultures. For example, Chinese parenting is generally rooted in Confucian values, which emphasizes group orientation and collectivism, compared to European American societies that typically promote self-expression and individualism. While cultural contexts may …

The Parent Behind The Eating Disorder: How Parenting Styles Affect Eating Disorders In Adolescents, Jessica Robertson Dec 2020

The Parent Behind The Eating Disorder: How Parenting Styles Affect Eating Disorders In Adolescents, Jessica Robertson

Family Perspectives

The family environment, specifically parent-child interaction and parenting practices, can influence the likelihood of adolescents—especially teenage girls—developing an eating disorder. Because of the high levels of control and warmth, authoritative parenting appears to be the most promising setting for adolescents to avoid disordered eating behaviors and to develop strong mental and physical health. Parenting styles such as authoritarian and neglectful parenting include practices that generally may not be supportive and can contribute to the likelihood of eating disorders. Once a teenaged girl develops an eating disorder, authoritative parenting has also shown the most potential to intervene appropriately to assist the …

Hemmed In? Considering The Complexities Of Amish Womanhood, Natalie Jolly Dec 2020

Hemmed In? Considering The Complexities Of Amish Womanhood, Natalie Jolly

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

How have conceptions of Amish womanhood changed over time? In this article, I show that while early scholars offered only a rudimentary look at Amish women’s lives, current research is expanding and expounding upon this question. To begin, I survey early Amish studies literature, demonstrating that women’s lives rarely featured in these analyses. More recent scholarship demonstrates that when women’s lives take center stage, a fuller appreciation of the shape of women’s lives emerges. Specifically, I demonstrate that a simplified rendering not only masks the role women play but also obfuscates important aspects of Amish gender norms. I then turn …
