Leadership Development In Grace Church: Adding Replication Culture Elements To Its Family Culture, Timothy N. Thomassian
Leadership Development In Grace Church: Adding Replication Culture Elements To Its Family Culture, Timothy N. Thomassian
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project addressed the problem of the lack of a systemic approach to developing potential leaders at Grace Church as it seeks to add replication-culture elements to its existing family culture. The problem was addressed in four steps: (1) exploring biblical leadership development principles using the examples of Moses and Joshua, Jesus and Peter, and Paul’s instruction to the church leaders to “equip the saints for the work of ministry,” (Eph. 4:11-12), (2) reviewing relevant books, articles, and other sources to discover leadership development principles as they relate to replication culture, (3) conducting face-to-face interviews with three leadership development pastors …
Ascending Into The Hill Of The Lord: What The Psalms Can Tell Us About The Rituals Of The First Temple, David J. Larsen
Ascending Into The Hill Of The Lord: What The Psalms Can Tell Us About The Rituals Of The First Temple, David J. Larsen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In this article, the author attempts to shed light on practics alluded to in the Psalms that may have formed part of the ritual system and theology of Solomon’s original temple. He describes various aspects of the ritual system of pre-exilic Israel, including pilgrimage, questioning at the gates, epiphany, and royal rites. In the culmination of these rites, the king, who likely led the procession up to the temple, was enthroned on or beside the Lord’s own throne and transformed or “reborn” as a Son of God, appearing before the people in glorious fashion as the representative of Yahweh

The Impact Of Presence And Touch On Church Growth, William Charles Berg
The Impact Of Presence And Touch On Church Growth, William Charles Berg
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project addresses the problem of discovering whether, when churches move to be physically present in their communities and engage in appropriate touch through serving, there is a corresponding impact in confession of faith and church growth. To answer this problem, the researcher began with the incarnation and trinity as a model of presence and touch. The researcher reviewed the Gospels to identify Jesus’ use of physical presence and touch in His ministry. The researcher also looked at the impact of presence and touch on the early church in the Book of Acts. He reviewed literature that focused on the …
Christ-Centered Leadership: The Formation Of Millennials, Sean K. Wood
Christ-Centered Leadership: The Formation Of Millennials, Sean K. Wood
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem this project addressed is the perceived lack of Christocentric leadership development among millennials of Canadian churches with over one thousand people in attendance. In response to this problem the researcher explored Christ-centered leadership formation and discipleship in the New Testament and early church. The literature reviewed related to the uniqueness of millennials as it connects to leadership development. The researcher interviewed two Senior Pastors who are considered highly influential with the millennial cohort. These two leaders have both led effective church congregations in Canada during their respective twenty-plus year tenure serving the same churches. Millennial leaders who are …
Function And Nature Of The Heavenly Sanctuary/Temple And Its Earthly Counterparts In The New Testament Gospels, Acts, And The Epistles: A Motif Study Of Major Passages, Leonardo G. Nunes
Function And Nature Of The Heavenly Sanctuary/Temple And Its Earthly Counterparts In The New Testament Gospels, Acts, And The Epistles: A Motif Study Of Major Passages, Leonardo G. Nunes
Dissertations
The present dissertation examines the function and nature of the heavenly sanctuary/temple and its relationship to the earthly counterparts in the major passages of the New Testament (NT) Gospels, Acts, Pauline and General Epistles where the sanctuary/temple motif is found (a total of twenty-two passages). After the introductory chapter, chapters 2, 3, and 4 are devoted to the exegetical analysis of these major passages following canonical order and divisions of the NT. This exegetical analysis has detected the relevance of the heavenly sanctuary/temple motif for NT studies, i.e., how its function, nature, and relationship to the earthly counterparts influence the …
Liturgical Drama In The Church: An Application Of Daily Scriptural Living, Alma Lee Langley-Ward
Liturgical Drama In The Church: An Application Of Daily Scriptural Living, Alma Lee Langley-Ward
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to study the validity of using liturgical drama as a vital tool of expression in helping to make Scripture come alive for the application and transformation of lives, first of those of the researcher’s local congregation and eventually of other churches. The researcher wrote and directed a play using members of the Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church as actors and crew. The entire church was a participant of this research as the play was done during a Sunday morning worship service as part of the liturgy. The mixed-method approach presented the most viable …

Creator God, Humans, And Artificial Intelligence: Framework To Address Theological And Relational Issues, Tinku Thompson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Technological advancements are happening at an accelerated phase. Five decades ago, no one even owned a personal computer. A decade ago, smartphones did not exist. Today there are 2.71 billion smartphone users in the world, which is more than thirty-five percent of the world’s population. Many developments have happened in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, and Mixed Reality. AI is the term used to describe a machine’s ability to simulate human intelligence. Characteristics once considered unique to humans like learning, logic, reasoning, perception, and creativity are now being replicated by technology and used in every industry. The problem …

The Oberlin Near East Study Collection In Context, Julian Hirsch
The Oberlin Near East Study Collection In Context, Julian Hirsch
Honors Papers
Housed in Oberlin College’s Religion department, the Oberlin Near East Study Collection encompasses a wide variety of archaeological material from the Southern Levant. Its roughly 650 artifacts encompass a vast time span from the Epipaleolithic to the Modern Period with most objects coming from the Iron Age. As a teaching collection, the objects were used to vivify Biblical texts for generations of students in Oberlin’s School of Theology and later in the College’s department of Religion. Starting in the 1980s, the collection began to receive only limited use with its contents being largely forgotten. This thesis utilizes the collection's artifacts, …
The “Spirit Of Prophecy” (Rev 19:10) In The Light Of Second Temple Jewish Usage, Davidson Razafiarivony
The “Spirit Of Prophecy” (Rev 19:10) In The Light Of Second Temple Jewish Usage, Davidson Razafiarivony
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The phrase “spirit of prophecy” occurs only once in the entire New Testament, and it is in Revelation 19:10. It appears to signify that the prophetic gift was still manifested in the time of the New Testament and in the latter days of the Church. But how can we understand the Jewish tradition through several statements from Jewish literature that prophecy ceased earlier?1 Can the understanding and use of “spirit of prophecy” within Judaism be of help to us as we interpret and apply the “spirit of prophecy” in the book of Revelation? In this study, I intend to engage …
Jesus’ Eschatological Legacy: The Tension Between The Nearness Of The Second Coming And The Mission Of The Church, Wilson Paroschi
Jesus’ Eschatological Legacy: The Tension Between The Nearness Of The Second Coming And The Mission Of The Church, Wilson Paroschi
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
Jesus announced His return as imminent (Matt 10:23; 16:28; Mark 1:15; 9:1; Luke 21:31-32; cf. Matt 24:42-44; 25:1-13; Mark 13:33- 37; Luke 12:35-38; 21:34-36), and so it was expected by the early believers (Acts 3:19-21; Rom 13:11; 1 Cor 7:29-30; 15:51-58; 16:22; 1 Thess 4:15-18; Heb 10:25, 37; Jas 5:8; 1 Pet 4:17). On the other hand, He also left the disciples a worldwide mission (Matt 24:14; 26:13; Mark 13:10; Acts 1:8; cf. Rev 14:6), which requires time, and two thousand years later it seems that the church is still quite far from finishing it. This apparent contradiction has intrigued …
Kaaba & Sanctuary: Qur’Anic And Biblical Cosmic Centers—Ontological And Existential Worldviews, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Kaaba & Sanctuary: Qur’Anic And Biblical Cosmic Centers—Ontological And Existential Worldviews, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The Qur’anic Kaaba1 and the Biblical heavenly sanctuary articulate respective cosmic centers with corresponding ontological and existential worldviews. Numerous parallels exist. Each cosmic center presents a paradigmatic system toward an understanding of reality. Each unfolds a view of God which brings significant implications for theology and practice. Each effects worldview reflection and formation. Each indicates the direction of prayer. Each comprises the place of spiritual gathering for the believing community. And, each defines the pathway to salvation, the cleansing of worshipers, the promise of divine blessing and peace, as well as oneness with God. It comes as no surprise that …
Education And Eschatology: Why Theological Education Is Necessary, Jiří Moskala
Education And Eschatology: Why Theological Education Is Necessary, Jiří Moskala
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
I vividly recall the situation when I was 6 years old. It was a sunny Sabbath morning during the summer, and I was going to church. On the way, I met an elder, a very fine man admired by many who asked me what my plans were for the future. With great enthusiasm, I told him that in three months I would enroll in school for my first class. He turned to me, paused, and said: “Jiří, you probably will not even go to school, because Jesus will come soon,” and then he added, “and certainly you will not finish …
Discovering Successful Pastoral Mentors Based On Their Spiritual Gifts Cluster And Engaging Them In Mentorship In The Wisconsin Conference Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Adam Case
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Many pastors are placed into pastoral ministry with passion and education but lack sufficient mentoring to help them succeed in ministry. These pastors would benefit from a mentor who could support them and/or grow them through intentional mentorship in specific agreed upon areas. The concept of mentoring is biblical, Jesus being a prime example, and one that is in line with the principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. There is no conflict with the concept of mentoring, but nothing practical has been put into place in the Wisconsin Conference to discover good pastoral mentors and then engage them in …
The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd
The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article focuses on the contribution of pastoral institutes for an inculturated and contextualized ministry in the non-Western local churches. The treated pastoral institutes in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania have played an outstanding role in implementing the communion ecclesiology of Vatican II in their respective local churches by moving towards an inculturated Christian faith and church and a contextualized Christian and ecclesial praxis. By following the Vatican II appeal to read and scrutinize the signs of the times, they played a catalytic function in the local non-Western churches to evangelize and to develop a meaningful ministry and participatory …
The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel Of John, Bastian Ogon
The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel Of John, Bastian Ogon
Master's Theses
Problem
The term ἀλήθεια, 'truth' is a frequently used term in the Gospel of John. The fundamental question of this paper is to discuss how truth is understood by John and if the Gospel of John conveys a specific concept of truth?
Method
The first part will briefly consider common philosophical concepts of truth, as well as epistemological issues connected to them. These approaches will be compared with John's truth concept. In the second part the most important passages where ἀλήθεια is used will be carefully analyzed exegetically, in order to understand the concept of ἀλήθεια in Johannine thought. The …
God, Time And The Sabbath: A Brief Historical-Theological Survey, Francis Gayoba
God, Time And The Sabbath: A Brief Historical-Theological Survey, Francis Gayoba
Master's Theses
Problem
This study takes Fernando Canale's work as a starting point, which has demonstrated that unbiblical philosophical presuppositions have undergirded many forms of Christian theology. Of specific interest to this thesis is the presupposition of divine timelessness or temporality, which may have consequences on various doctrines. This study examines the possible influence of these presuppositions on the meaning of the Sabbath, as seen in the writings of Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Andreas Carlstadt, Oswald Glaidt, Andreas Fischer, Nicholas Bownd, and Theophilus Brabourne. The problem this thesis addresses is whether an observable connection can be made …
The Afterlife: An Exegetical And Theological Analysis Of Christ's Discourse In Luke 16: 19-31, Pop-Coman Ioan
The Afterlife: An Exegetical And Theological Analysis Of Christ's Discourse In Luke 16: 19-31, Pop-Coman Ioan
Master's Theses
Problem
The parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus, in terms of its complexity and construction, is one of the most difficult decipherable parables that Jesus uttered during His time among men. With much tact, we will try to answer a question that has profound implications: Does the narrative in Luke 16: 19-31 support the existence of life after death?
Purpose
We carefully examine the Christ’s discourse in Luke 16: 19-31 in order to identify those suggestive parallels between this account of Jesus and the culture of the time, which would help us to decode more clearly both the …

Identifying And Implementing The Theology Of The Domestic Church, Mishel Stefanac
Theses
This project explores the development of the theology of the domestic church and how it can be implemented in Catholic families. It investigates the origin of the phrase domestic church, traces its development over centuries, and considers the implications this has on the Church and families. The overall objective of this project is to inquire into the significance of this term and identify the principles that ought to be incorporated in a practical resource for families.
The project begins with a comprehensive analysis of the origins of the term domestic church, and how it developed over time. It investigates why …
The Tabernacle: Mountain Of God In The Cultus Of Israel, L. Michael Morales
The Tabernacle: Mountain Of God In The Cultus Of Israel, L. Michael Morales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In this article, Michael Morales considers how the building of the Tabernacle had been pre-figured from the earliest narratives of Genesis onward. It describes some of the parallels between the creation, deluge, and Sinai narratives and the tabernacle account; examines how the high priest’s office functions as something of a new Adam; and considers how the completed tabernacle resolves the storyline of Genesis and Exodus, via the biblical theme of “to dwell in the divine Presence.”

Appearances, Appearances: First Impressions Of Young David In 1 Samuel 16:12; 17:42, Mary Katherine Hom-Smith, Oliver Glanz
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things human beings look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Sam 16:7 TNIV). . . . So he sent and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one” (1 Sam 16:12 TNIV). . . . He looked David over and saw that he was …
The Knowledge Of End-Time Prophetic Scriptures Prepares Believers At Northcliffe Baptist Church To Expect Religious Persecution, John C. Reddy
The Knowledge Of End-Time Prophetic Scriptures Prepares Believers At Northcliffe Baptist Church To Expect Religious Persecution, John C. Reddy
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The lack of knowledge about the end-time prophetic Scriptures and its inferences to Islamic eschatology appears to be a problem at Northcliffe Baptist Church. The purpose of this study is to raise awareness about the end-time Scriptures and prepare the congregants to expect persecution as normative in the Christian life. Islam is projected to overtake Christianity in a few decades and is proliferating at a rapid pace. The anti-parallel structure between Christian eschatology and Islamic eschatology is disconcerting. Islam denies Jesus’s divinity and advocates persecuting Christians if they do not convert to Islam. Suffering and persecution for the Lord are …

Fostering Self-Efficacy For Biblical Learning And Doctrinal Awareness With Micro-Teaching In A Brief Course On Bible Study, Robin K. Henson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Self-efficacy for biblical learning was explored in the context of a small group experience focused on how to study the Bible. After first developing a new instrument to measure self-efficacy for biblical learning in a pilot study, ten church attendees participated in a seven-week course designed around the hermeneutical principles of understanding a Scripture passage in textual and historical context, placing the passage in the grand story of God, and relating it to relevant doctrine. The small group process employed micro-teaching as a mechanism to facilitate challenge and mastery experience in learning. Micro-teaching places the student in the role of …
