Students Under Stress (Why Are Cultural Differences Stressful?), Amir M. Maleki, Fariborz Rahimnia
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Although acculturative stress (AS) studies have been conducted for five decades, we still know little about it. Moreover, we do not have a specific framework for international student population. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to use theories and research methods in different contexts and develop a framework. We systematically review articles related to this field, particularly 92 studies published until 2020. There are common variables in AS, comprising social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and demographic factors which managers and decision makers should properly understand and administer in organizations. This article also confirms a link between AS and …
Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy
Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy
Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I analyze how the line between good and bad religions, as constructed through secularism, influenced whether or not practitioners of religion were sent to insane asylums or, at least, considered by their peers or family to be at risk of insanity or on the brink of it. Exploring these questions revealed the link between religion and insanity but also showed how some religious practices (especially ecstatic behavior) placed believers at even greater risk because of the threat to the secular and progressive narrative encouraged by the people around them.
By placing the asylum narrative in conversation with …

A Catholic Ethic For Smartphones In Tanzania, Faustine Tarimo
A Catholic Ethic For Smartphones In Tanzania, Faustine Tarimo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project is a synthesis of Church documents and papal encyclicals to form a Catholic ethic for the smartphone use in Tanzania. The research question for this project is how a Catholic communication ethic shapes the use of smartphones for human communication in Tanzania. The problem I want to address is the perceived danger of losing connectivity or ‘real’ face-to-face encounters between people in “let’s talk culture” in Tanzania. The goal of this project is to appreciate the use of smartphones, at the same time to attend to a Catholic ethic to integrate into a “let’s talk culture” some digital …

“That Those Hearing Or Reading Might Strive To Imitate”: Donative Intent, Positive Triangular Mimetic Desire, And The Portrayal Of The Mediator-Divine (Non)Object Relationship In Richard Rolle, Julian Of Norwich, And Richard Crashaw, Steven Geitgey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mystical texts often present themselves as possessing a “donative” intent, in which the writer aims to share the significance of their own experience. This dissertation will show how a consideration of donative intent and its textual results can enrich the study of medieval and early-modern mystical writings, approaching them from the broad concept of triangular mimetic desire in conjunction with other theoretical insights in order to examine the methods through which writers seek to portray their mediator-object relationship with God and inspire reading subjects’ mimetic desire.
I will elucidate Richard Rolle’s portrayal of his mediatorial purpose and unique experiences, and …
The Haven: A Clinical Ethnography Of A Farm-Based Therapeutic Community, Monica Lawson
The Haven: A Clinical Ethnography Of A Farm-Based Therapeutic Community, Monica Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic communities are communal spaces where individuals live for an extended period in hopes of recovering from personal crises, or while coping with severe mental illness. They provide a humanistic alternative to inpatient hospitalization. Although they are seldom studied, even less is known about farm-based therapeutic communities in the United States, where communal work is viewed as central to recovery. This dissertation examines the experience of living and working at the Haven. Originally conceived as a farm-based community where suffering individuals could experience reprieve from the demands of the “working world,” and heal by living in community, recent changes in …
Examining The Intersectionality Of Religious Faith, Spirituality, And Healthcare Communication, Felix Okeke
Examining The Intersectionality Of Religious Faith, Spirituality, And Healthcare Communication, Felix Okeke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is my own contribution in responding to the concern raised by certain communication scholars. Their concern was that little research and few publications have been done in the communication field by communication scholars that trace the relationship among religious faith, spirituality, and healthcare communication. While Parrott (2004) describes this apparent neglect as “collective amnesia,” others label it “religion blindness.” Thus, in trying to trace this relationship, this project uses Christian, biblical, and bioethics backgrounds to establish the value, sacredness, and dignity of human life, since these concepts make healthcare and healthcare communication necessary in the first place. These …
From The Lafitte Greenway To The Carondelet Canal: Genealogy Of An Emerging Place On The New Orleans Landscape, Elizabeth Williams
From The Lafitte Greenway To The Carondelet Canal: Genealogy Of An Emerging Place On The New Orleans Landscape, Elizabeth Williams
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 2015, New Orleans opened the Lafitte Greenway, a linear urban bike path. The Lafitte Greenway follows the footprint of the Carondelet Canal, a historic shipping channel developed in the late-eighteenth century. While it was created as a public resource, the Carondelet Canal became a thriving residential and commercial corridor during New Orleans’ antebellum period, accompanied by public spaces in which class- and race-based hierarchies were produced, contested, and reimagined. Archaeological and archival data from Square 240, a block along the canal’s route, illustrate the tensions inherent in the production of urban public spaces, both past and present. A genealogy …
Wetland To Wasteland, Plantation To Plant: The Visual Legacy Of Plantations In The South Louisiana Landscape Of Environmental Justice, Ella Mcintire
Wetland To Wasteland, Plantation To Plant: The Visual Legacy Of Plantations In The South Louisiana Landscape Of Environmental Justice, Ella Mcintire
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Southeast Louisiana landscape sits at the intersection of a number of environmental and humanitarian crises. Violence against man and land endemic to the Plantation Era development of the Lower Mississippi laid the foundation for modern issues of coastal land loss, habitat destruction, pollution, environmental racism, and displacement. Land-use patterns of the Plantation economy made the region optimal for petrochemical processing, turning wetland to wasteland, and plantation to plant. The exhibit Climates of Inequality: Standing Up On River Road uses photography, cinematography, 360-video, and soundscapes to explore the dialogic relationship between fragile natural spaces in southern Louisiana and the historically …
Exploring Community- And Society-Level Interventions For Healing Historical Trauma: A Grounded Theory Study, Anabel Mifsud
Exploring Community- And Society-Level Interventions For Healing Historical Trauma: A Grounded Theory Study, Anabel Mifsud
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Addressing historical trauma in populations that have been exposed to long-term mass violence, persecution, and systematic oppression is a critical step in the healing process in affected communities and societies. Despite the growing consensus for adopting a multilevel approach to mitigate the present-day impacts of historical grievances, extant literature on collective mental health interventions that address historical trauma is limited, fragmented, and largely theoretical. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to examine how mental health practitioners respond to the challenges of historical trauma at the community and society levels, and to explore the functions that professional counselors …

Investigating Language Variation And Change In Appalachian Dialects: The Case Of The Perfective Done, Julia Horton, Anna Muraco
Investigating Language Variation And Change In Appalachian Dialects: The Case Of The Perfective Done, Julia Horton, Anna Muraco
Honors Thesis
The perfective done (“She done tended the garden”) is an often-overlooked grammatical feature specific to relatively few dialects of American English, most prominently seen in Appalachian dialects. While the perfective done has been described in detail by linguists since the 1970s, and there has been a demonstrated decline in the frequency of use of the perfective done among Appalachian dialect speakers in the past fifty years, there is very little existing scholarship that investigates an empirical basis for the claim that this long-term variation in the use of done can be considered a true language change-in-progress. The present research reviews …
Methodising Scots: The Cases Of Allan Ramsay & Thomas Ruddiman, Jeremy J. Smith
Methodising Scots: The Cases Of Allan Ramsay & Thomas Ruddiman, Jeremy J. Smith
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines the linguistic issues facing editors of two 18th century Scottish editors, Allan Ramsay and Thomas Ruddiman, in modifying or standardizing the language in earlier Scottish poetic manuscripts, arguing that "the editorial process is not—and never has been—“neutral” or “objective” but is rather a hermeneutic act constrained by contemporary conditions of publication and intended audience," and that Ramsay and Ruddiman, like modern editors, were "constrained in quite delicate ways by their historical setting."

“I Said, You Are Gods”: Pastoral Motives Manifest In Patristic Citations Of Psalm 82:6, Charles Schulz
“I Said, You Are Gods”: Pastoral Motives Manifest In Patristic Citations Of Psalm 82:6, Charles Schulz
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The early church fathers frequently cited Ps. 82:6 (LXX 81:6), “I said, You are gods and all sons of the Most High,” a passage Jesus himself quoted (John 10:34) to defend his own title as the Son of God. Scholars agree that the patristic use of verse underwrote the developing doctrine of deification, which promised that Christians would become “gods” in some sense by bearing God’s image and likeness and participating in Christ and his saving work. In order to deepen and focus our understanding of the significance and role of this passage for patristic theology—and particularly for pastoral practice—this …

Applying The Environmental Identity Development Model In Place-Based Education: An Online Resource Guide, Margaret R. Blake
Applying The Environmental Identity Development Model In Place-Based Education: An Online Resource Guide, Margaret R. Blake
Education
I created an online resource guide for place-based education (PBE) informed by the Environmental Identity Development (EID) Model and research (Green et al., 2016). The EID Model provides a flexible framework for understanding how individuals develop their sense of self within and in relation to the natural world. The model is valuable as a diagnostic tool and a guide in the creation of place-based activities that support children’s play, learning, and growth in nature. The goals of this project were to create an accessible guide to understanding the EID Model and theory; to demonstrate how the EID Model and research …
The Yup'ik Relationships Of Qiluliuryaraq (Processing Intestine), Ellen Carrlee
The Yup'ik Relationships Of Qiluliuryaraq (Processing Intestine), Ellen Carrlee
Anthropology
This project explores multiple Native cultural contexts that intersect in the use and understanding of intestine. Gut (tissues of internal organs including stomach, intestine, bladder and esophagus) as a raw material was historically used by many circumpolar cultures to make items like drums, raincoats, hats, windows, sails, containers, and hunting floats. These items are abundant in museum collections, but rarely seen today in cultural practice or the art market. Intestine is a natural material that was replaced by synthetic materials, but its dual physical properties of protection and permeability are the only features replicated by plastics. Examination of intestine as …
Ethnoarchaeology Of The Middle Tanana Valley, Alaska, Gerad M. Smith
Ethnoarchaeology Of The Middle Tanana Valley, Alaska, Gerad M. Smith
Anthropology
This study explores the shifting anthropological constructs of identity for the Middle Tanana people through time. It first summarizes this theme through contemporary regional Native American internal and external influences. A discussion is then given on how these constructs became formed through historical processes. Next, it provides an in-depth look into how identity became shaped prior to the Euro-American influence through an ethnographic reconstruction. These are framed in a way to form relevant hypotheses to study the regional prehistoric archaeological record. The Historical Linguistics analytical approach used here confirms that there is very little, if any, evidence in the languages …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Health Equity As Evaluated Through The Covid-19 Response Concerning French-Speaking Refugees., Margaret Henning
Honors Theses
A collaborative approach is needed to understand the multifaceted medical bias and inequalities experienced by refugee camps of Francophone (French-speaking) nations. A combination of interest and passion for anthropology, medicine, and the French language presents a unique window of intersectionality to analyze this issue. Through a comprehensive review of literature published in both English and French languages, and connections with directors and leaders of refugee camps located in France and French-speaking African nations, we have elucidated a few examples of alarming medical bias experienced by both refugees and migrants. Although an exhaustive list of medical bias could be presented on …
Transformational Leadership: Implementing A Cultural Approach In Organizations, Mostafa Sayyadi Ghasabeh
Transformational Leadership: Implementing A Cultural Approach In Organizations, Mostafa Sayyadi Ghasabeh
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study provides support for the positive impact of transformational leadership on knowledge management. This article reveals that transformational leaders contribute to knowledge management by acting as effective change agents through better management of firms’ internal resources (i.e. organizational culture). In terms of mediating effects, this article shows that organizational culture is important in the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge management. The study also shows that transformational leaders not only directly impact knowledge management but, more specifically, foster a more effective culture, which positively contributes to the effectiveness of knowledge management.
