2020 Idea Of Nature Public Lecture Series Schedule (Flyer), Samantha Harvey

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

The goal of the series is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry about the environment and to foster dialogue across the campus and community, based on the premise that big questions need interdisciplinary answers.

How are conceptions of nature expressed in the sciences, literature, art, philosophy, music and other disciplines? How did ideas of nature change from 1660 to the present, a period of radical change and revolution? These lectures are free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception with appetizers.

A Vocation In Preservation: An Ethnographic Study Of Historic Preservation And Allied Trades, Ginny Willoughby Jan 2020

A Vocation In Preservation: An Ethnographic Study Of Historic Preservation And Allied Trades, Ginny Willoughby

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This research examines younger generational interest in historic preservation (HP) and the preservation trades (PT). Utilizing an ethnographic approach, industry professionals were interviewed about their knowledge and perspectives on issues facing their respective fields (HP and PT). Historic preservation and the preservation trades were both identified to be experiencing a decline in interest and participation from younger individuals, thus negatively impacting incoming supply of future labor. Given the intensive nature of the field, traditionally the preservation trades have required a larger number of specialists. Currently, both fields are facing workforce shortages. High school level career and technical education was examined …

The Bird, The Oak, And The Stories That Build Us, Alicyn Newman Jan 2020

The Bird, The Oak, And The Stories That Build Us, Alicyn Newman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This is a project combining creative writing and oral history research surrounding the life of my late grandfather, Kenneth Wesley Newman. In its pages, I delve into memory, history, and storytelling, seeking to identify which stories have held meaning for my family over time, and why. I have written my way chronologically through my grandfather’s life and interwoven his narrative with what I know now, what I remember, and the stories we continue to tell as a family. The interdisciplinary nature of this project led to a combination of creating writing and research, which included reading war-era letters, watching home …

Female Cartographers: Historical Obstacles And Successes, Eva Llamas-Owens Jan 2020

Female Cartographers: Historical Obstacles And Successes, Eva Llamas-Owens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For much of history, women have lived in male-dominated societies, which has limited their participation in society. The field of cartography has been largely populated by men, but despite cultural obstacles, there are records of women significantly contributing over the past 1,000 years. Historically, women have faced coverture, stereotypes, lack of opportunities, and lack of recognition for their accomplishments. Their involvement in cartography is often a result of education or valuable experiences, availability of resources, a supportive community or mentor, hard work, and luck regardless of when and where they lived.

This research divides women before and after the turn …

"Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" Vs. "Invasion!": Understanding Treatment Of Immigrants In The United States By Examining International Laws Of War, Laura E. Alexander Jan 2020

"Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" Vs. "Invasion!": Understanding Treatment Of Immigrants In The United States By Examining International Laws Of War, Laura E. Alexander

GCHR Faculty Publications

This paper engages in a thought experiment by applying the legal obligations set out in the Geneva Conventions of 1949 to the United States government’s treatment of Central American asylum seekers arriving at the southern border of the U.S. since 2013. It asks what legal obligations the U.S. government would have toward people who cross the border if those people were either civilian nationals, or soldiers, of a hostile power with whom the U.S. was at war. After demonstrating that current treatment of asylum seekers falls short even of legal obligations to prisoners of war, the essay argues that poor …

Nephite Daykeepers: Ritual Specialists In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright Jan 2020

Nephite Daykeepers: Ritual Specialists In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Mark Alan Wright describes a common type of ritual specialist among the Maya called a “daykeeper.” He discusses similarities and differences with descriptions of ritual specialists in the Book of Mormon, including those who used the Urim and Thummim, performed rituals of healing, experienced near-death episodes at the inauguration of their calling, kept track of calendars, mastered astronomy, and invoked God to bring rain. He finds several intriguing similarities, but also differences — the most important one being that the Nephites understood that the people to do all these things came from the God of Israel rather than the local …

Audience Segmentation Ethics In Health Promotion, Uyen Lili Le Jan 2020

Audience Segmentation Ethics In Health Promotion, Uyen Lili Le

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Audience segmentation is a crucial component of health promotion campaigns as it is believed to support health-related campaigns to achieve greater benefits. However, there are numerous concerns about the ethicality of audience segmentation. For instance, Newton, Newton, Turk, and Ewing (2013) stated that audience segmentation can create inequalities between different groups of audiences. In addition, unintended audience and consequences are often excluded from health campaign planning and execution. These factors can negatively affect the campaign by creating adverse impacts. As a matter of fact, the prominent challenge of health promotion is sustaining the connection between ethics and effectiveness for promotional …

Oral Probiotic Supplementation As An Adjunct To Non-Surgical Therapy In Peri-Implantitis Lesions: A Pilot Study, Po-Ning Polly Huang

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: During the last decade, the results of several clinical studies suggested that oral probiotics may potentially improve oral health. The first study examining the effects of probiotics on oral health demonstrated that almost every patient with gingivitis, periodontitis or pregnancy gingivitis, had significant improvements in measurable periodontal indices when they were treated with a locally administered culture supernatant of a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain. This finding sparked several other studies to further examine the potential for treating oral diseases, such as, combating halitosis, oral candidiasis, and dental caries with probiotics. Of our interest, Fernandez et al. and Hollstrom et al. …

The Integration Of Lidar And Legacy Datasets Provides Improved Explanations For The Spatial Patterning Of Shell Rings In The American Southeast, Dylan S. Davis, Robert Dinapoli, Matthew Sanger, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Archaeologists have struggled to combine remotely sensed datasets with preexisting information for landscape-level analyses. In the

American Southeast, for example, analyses of lidar data using automated feature extraction algorithms have led to the identification of over

40 potential new pre-European-contact Native American shell ring deposits in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Such datasets are vital for understanding settlement distributions, yet a comprehensive assessment requires remotely sensed and previously surveyed archaeological data. Here, we use legacy data and airborne lidar-derived information to conduct a series of point pattern analyses using spatial models that we designed to assess the factors that best explain …

When Repatriation Doesn’T Happen: Relationships Created Through Cultural Property Negotiations, Ellyn Demuynck Jan 2020

When Repatriation Doesn’T Happen: Relationships Created Through Cultural Property Negotiations, Ellyn Demuynck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the discourse of repatriation in connection to the Encounters exhibition held by the National Museum of Australia in 2015. Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander artifacts were loaned to the Australian museum by the British Museum. At the close of the exhibition, one item, the Gweagal shield, was claimed for repatriation. The repatriation request had not been approved at the time of this research. The Gweagal shield is a historically significant artifact for Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians. Analysis takes into account the political economy of the two museums and situates the exhibition within the relevant museum …

Emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases pose significant public health risks that are continuously haunting human civilization in the past several decades. Such emerging pathogens should be considered as a high threat to humans, animals, and environmental health. The year 2020 was welcomed by another significant virus from family Coronaviridae called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The disease was first reported in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China. Within a short time, this disease attained the status of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Service-Learning As Global Citizenship Education: Acting Locally On Global Challenges And Concerns, Genejane M. Adarlo

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Service-learning is a method of teaching that is increasingly used in higher education. Studies are few though on how local placements in service-learning can bring about global citizenship and promote social justice. Hence, this study used multi-sited ethnography to examine the teaching-learning process of service-learning to better understand the construction of civic identity and sense of agency among students when this method of teaching was approached within the larger context of social justice. Study participants included students taking part in service-learning efforts for literacy and maternal health from Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University, respectively. Data were gathered and …

Review: Hokulani K. Aikau. A Chosen People, A Promised Land: Mormonism And Race In Hawai’I. Minneapolis: University Of Minnesota Press, 2012., Sujey Vega Jan 2020

Review: Hokulani K. Aikau. A Chosen People, A Promised Land: Mormonism And Race In Hawai’I. Minneapolis: University Of Minnesota Press, 2012., Sujey Vega

Mormon Studies Review

I want to begin by referencing a particularly moving scene depicted in A Chosen People, a Promised Land that speaks to the beauty and hardship of what it means to reclaim faith and culture for one’s own. In her narrative, Hokulani Aikau depicts the 2001 launching of the wa’a kaulua ‘o Iosepa, a voyage canoe made by and for Polynesian Latter-day Saints. Long before it was the “latest attraction” to the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), this wa’a served an inspiring purpose. Aikau describes in vivid detail the beachside ceremony and the communal effort to set this majestic canoe into the …

Writing The Gap: The Role Of Clinician-Authored Narratives In Building Structural Competence And Situated Knowledge In Service Of Marginalized Patient Populations, Anusha Singh Jan 2020

Writing The Gap: The Role Of Clinician-Authored Narratives In Building Structural Competence And Situated Knowledge In Service Of Marginalized Patient Populations, Anusha Singh

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis analyzes clinician-authored narratives about mental illness. Through this lens, it argues that the writing and reading of medical narratives can facilitate the development of key clinical skills such as structural competence and situated knowledge – terms that this thesis will define and discuss at length. It will argue that clinicians who write about structural barriers to health do so to develop a deeper understanding about their vulnerable and marginalized patient populations. It will assert that clinicians who pursue situated knowledge can positively impact health outcomes. Ultimately, this thesis will compare what clinician-authored narratives can achieve with what patient …

Discipline, Diagnose & Punish: A Critical Analysis Of Ptsd Diagnostication Amongst Syrian Migrants In Jordan, Erik Kramer

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This qualitative project seeks to explore sociopolitical factors influencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostication in Syrian migrants living in Jordan. Interviews were performed with twenty-three key informants, comprised of clinicians, organizational staff, and scholars, using semi-structured techniques which were analyzed with grounded theory analytic approaches. The results illuminate the complex social forces governing the practice of PTSD diagnostication in the Syrian migrant population in Jordan, with a focus on the effects of financial pressures. This is the first study to report extensively on the financial pressures affecting PTSD diagnostication in this setting. These data served as rooted substrate for a …

Understanding Global Change: From Documentation And Collaboration To Social Transformation, Karen E. Pennesi Jan 2020

Understanding Global Change: From Documentation And Collaboration To Social Transformation, Karen E. Pennesi

Anthropology Publications

The conclusion to the book situates the chapters within four programs of anthropological research on climate change: (1) documentation of local impacts of and adaptations to climate change, (2) connections to socioeconomic and political contexts, (3) collaborations with nonanthropologists, and (4) activism and social transformation. The final section notes the persistent challenges to creating positive change and meaningful research outcomes. It highlights some examples of success and outlines future directions for politically engaged anthropological work around climate change.

Anthropology Publications

We report on research identifying supports and barriers for women of diverse backgrounds entering executive roles in Canadian organizations. Intersectionality explains how different social categories such as gender, age and ethnoracial identity are interrelated and affect the professional lives of women. Family supports and networking are key to women's success. The COVID-19 pandemic presents both problems and opportunities for working women. This research was conducted as a graduate student project in collaboration with the Women's Executive Network. We offer recommendations for how organizations can better support women entering leadership roles.

“Real Men Stand For Our Nation”: Constructions Of An American Nation And Anti-Kaepernick Memes, Nik Dickerson, Matt Hodler

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

On September 1, 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled for the playing of the national anthem arguing that he was “not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” noting that “this is bigger than football and it would be selfish . . . to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick received a tremendous amount of backlash for this action, and many White fans/media pundits accused him of disrespecting the …
