Mathematical Cognition And The Arts, Marcel Danesi
Mathematical Cognition And The Arts, Marcel Danesi
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This article revisits the study of mathematics in the arts, and vice versa, the arts in mathematics, with a view to connecting mathematical and artistic creativity to the same neural circuits—a proposition put forward for mathematics and language in a critical 2000 book by Lakoff and Núñez, Where Mathematics Comes From: How the Embodied Mind Brings Mathematics into Being. This expanded perspective would open up suggestive avenues for connecting mathematics, language, and the arts as part of an imaginative blend that comes out in different forms but having the same underlying neural source. Whether or not this can be …

Preliminary Data On The Relation Between Acculturation, Weight, And Sleep In Recently Immigrated Adolescents From Central America, Aleyda Arreola, Amanda Venta
Preliminary Data On The Relation Between Acculturation, Weight, And Sleep In Recently Immigrated Adolescents From Central America, Aleyda Arreola, Amanda Venta
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
Data on Hispanic immigrants links increased acculturation with behavioral health concerns, though most data focuses on adults and Mexican-Americans. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that acculturation and acculturative stress act as predictors of increased body mass index (BMI) and decreased sleep in a sample of 62 recently immigrated Central American adolescents. Findings indicated a significant link between increased language acculturation and decreased sleep in bivariate analyses, but failed to confirm relations using multivariate methods or document relations to weight. Preliminary conclusions suggest that concerns regarding obesity documented in other immigrant groups may not be relevant …

Examining Managerial Coaching Dyads And The Developmental Learning Outcomes For Managers Serving As Coaches And The Reverse Coaching Behaviors Of Their Subordinate Coachees, Beth Adele
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Scholars and practitioners have acknowledged that managerial coaching has been linked to positive outcomes for the coachee and organization and have begun to examine the dual developmental outcomes for managerial coaches as well as the concept of reverse managerial coaching. The purpose of this study was to explore how the facilitation of learning (coaching) occurs within manager/employee dyads, such that the behaviors, beliefs, and learning outcomes for the “manager as coach” are identified when exemplary managers are engaged in coaching their respective employees. It also explored the behaviors, beliefs, and learning outcomes of managers’ respective employees, who may have also …

Algorithms For Mitochondrial Genome Assembly And Haplogroup Assignment From Low-Coverage Whole-Genome Sequencing Data, Fahad Alqahtani
Algorithms For Mitochondrial Genome Assembly And Haplogroup Assignment From Low-Coverage Whole-Genome Sequencing Data, Fahad Alqahtani
Doctoral Dissertations
Mitochondria are cellular organelles present with very rare exceptions in all eukaryotic cells. In most animals, the mitochondria have their own genome. The small size, high copy number, and the presence of both coding and regulatory regions that mutate at different rates make the mitochondrial genome an ideal genetic marker. Indeed, mitochondrial sequences have been used in applications ranging from maternal ancestry inference and tracing human migrations to forensic analysis. This thesis presents several novel bioinformatic tools enabling highly accurate mitochondrial genome reconstruction from low coverage from WGS data. First, we describe the Statistical Mitogenome Assembly with Repeats (SMART) pipeline …

“Some Teachers Just Simply Care”: Respect In Urban Student-Teacher Relationships, Alexandra F. Singer, Shannon Audley
#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College
Teachers are ethically obligated to care for their students. One overlooked means of demonstrating care is through respect. However, because respectful behaviors are culturally dependent, exploring experiences of respect from students of color is needed to provide insight into student-teacher relationships. To understand students’ experiences of respect from teachers in the school setting, we interviewed 12 adolescents and emerging adults of color (M age = 17, SD age = 1.81) who attended Urban schools, about their experiences of respect from their teachers. We deductively and inductively coded the interviews separately for definitions of respect and experiences of respect from teachers …

The Phenomenology Of Pain, Saulius Geniusas
The Phenomenology Of Pain, Saulius Geniusas
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The Phenomenology of Pain is the first book-length investigation of its topic to appear in English. Groundbreaking, systematic, and illuminating, it opens a dialogue between phenomenology and such disciplines as cognitive science and cultural anthropology to argue that science alone cannot clarify the nature of pain experience without incorporating a phenomenological approach. Building on this premise, Saulius Geniusas develops a novel conception of pain grounded in phenomenological principles: pain is an aversive bodily feeling with a distinct experiential quality, which can only be given in original first-hand experience, either as a feeling-sensation or as an emotion.
Geniusas crystallizes the fundamental …

World View: Self Perceptionhow Do Traditional Healers See Themselves?A Comparative Study Between Two Tribes: The Kikuyu (Kenya) And El Gabaleya (Egypt), Iman El Bastawisi
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
In terms of all the changing orientations and perspectives towards “Traditional Healing” as an activity and professional that might meet with the call of “back to nature”, the present research aims to shed light on the views and perceptions of the one who are truly and totally involved in this practition. By using the comparative method in presenting and analyzing two different cases : the case of a traditional healer from the Kikuyu tribe in Kenya and the case of a traditional healer from El Gabaleya tribe in Egypt. Field studies were carried out among both tribes and intensive in …
Suicide And Culture, Mehmet Eskin
Suicide And Culture, Mehmet Eskin
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
The rates of suicidal ideation, attempts and mortality present a large intersocietal variation. This variation is usually attributed to the role of culture, but the issue is still poorly understood. How does culture contribute to the intersocietal or cross-cultural variation of suicidal behavior? How culture might be involved in the onset, maintenance and aggravation of suicidal tendencies? In this paper, I will be discussing possible mechanisms of culture for the onset, maintenance and aggravation of suicidal propensities. Specifically, I will be examining the role of religion, individualistic-collectivistic value orientations, self-construal and survival versus self-expression values for their relevance to suicidal …
"What Good Can There Be In This Kind Of Human?" Spanish Justification For The Conquest Of The Americas, John R. Pittenger
"What Good Can There Be In This Kind Of Human?" Spanish Justification For The Conquest Of The Americas, John R. Pittenger
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
The Spanish conquest of the Americas was one of the most brutal episodes in human history. Entire cultures of American natives were suppressed, murdered, raped, and enslaved by Spanish conquistadors on an incessant quest for precious metals and other material wealth. The devastation wrought upon the natives was so great that some Spaniards felt that what they were doing violated God's will and was naturally and morally wrong, but they were vastly outnumbered. The majority saw it as their right, duty, and privilege to conquer and subject these millions of people to Spanish rule. Since they were trying to justify …
