2020-February-06-A Study Of African American History Museums, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University Feb 2020

2020-February-06-A Study Of African American History Museums, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 6, 2020) – Over the past two decades, scholars have begun to study how African American history in the U.S. is often misrepresented or completely disregarded compared to other historical narratives. Key moments and people in African American history have often been neglected or trivialized in museum spaces.

“At the same time, some sites have challenged existing landscapes of memory and created new ones in order to produce ‘counter narratives’ that bring African American struggles front and center,” says Dr. Candace Forbes Bright, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at East Tennessee State University. …

Plant-Life In A World Of Differential Becoming: A Speculative Inquiry, C Baker Feb 2020

Plant-Life In A World Of Differential Becoming: A Speculative Inquiry, C Baker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This inquiry concerns a marginalized group, one subjected to the systematic manipulation and exploitation of humans over many centuries. Collectively they are known (by humans) as ‘plants’. The new planetary consciousness of science was reflected in the global scale and functions of European maritime expeditions between 16th and 20th centuries.1 Plant Hunters (the Tradescants, Banks, Masson, Humboldt, Douglas, Hooker, Fortune, the Lobbs – Veitch’ nursery which opened in 1808 in Devon alone employed 22, Wilson, Forrest, Kingdon-Ward) searched the globe for living vegetation. They imagined the establishment of vast archives of texts, images, artefacts, and specimens, patiently assembled, through which …

The Integration Of Transformation: Extending Campbell’S Monomyth, Susan L. Ross Feb 2020

The Integration Of Transformation: Extending Campbell’S Monomyth, Susan L. Ross

Heroism Science

Referring to Campbell’s lectures and the outcomes of one study about the integration of transformation, this paper argues that the hero’s journey (and transformation) is not accomplished unless the life-changing experience is psychospiritually integrated into daily life. Accordingly, Campbell contradicts his theory by suggesting that the monomyth finishes when (and if) the initiate, who has returned home, integrates by successfully finding a way to share the boon. The research clarifies that integrating involves nine phases and in combination, the hero-making process of transformation and integration follow a figure-8 pattern; an upper transformative and masculine-dominated hero’s journey and lower integrative feminine-dominated …

Speculations On Solidarity: From Fordism To The Gig Economy, Kendra Roedl Feb 2020

Speculations On Solidarity: From Fordism To The Gig Economy, Kendra Roedl

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

In this paper, Roedl traces the decline of worker solidarity starting with labor’s heyday in the 1930s and beforehand through an analysis of Fordism, post-Fordism, and ending on the recent phase of the gig economy. She employs Marxian theory on the base and superstructure to explain how economic phases have always been used to push free-market ideology, but differences in power workers leverage particularly between New Deal Fordism and the hyper specialized, hyper individualized gig economy have reinforced liberal and neoliberal ideology, and prevented unity and solidarity among workers of today.

New Evidence For An Early Settlement Of The Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico: The Chan Hol 3 Woman And Her Meaning For The Peopling Of The Americas, Wolfgang Stinnesbeck, Samuel R. Rennie, Jerónimo Avilés Olguín

KIP Articles

Human presence on the Yucatán Peninsula reaches back to the Late Pleistocene. Osteological evidence comes from submerged caves and sinkholes (cenotes) near Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Here we report on a new skeleton discovered by us in the Chan Hol underwater cave, dating to a minimum age of 9.9±0.1 ky BP based on 230Th/U-dating of flowstone overlying and encrusting human phalanges. This is the third Paleoindian human skeleton with mesocephalic cranial characteristics documented by us in the cave, of which a male individual named Chan Hol 2 described recently is one of the oldest human skeletons …

Raw Veganism: The Human Diet, Carlo Alvaro Feb 2020

Raw Veganism: The Human Diet, Carlo Alvaro

Publications and Research

In this chapter, I present some compelling evidence that points to the conclusion that the human species has a specific diet, which is a raw vegan diet of fresh fruit, tender leafy greens, and a moderate amount of nuts and seeds. Out of the hundreds of thousands of species in the world, the only one—ours—cooks food. Not surprisingly, our species is the only one that suffers from numerous maladies. In other words, the argument is that the consumption of cooked food (especially animal-based) is unhealthful and undermines our nature. I present undeniable evidence, from evolutionary science to nutrition science, showing …

A Multimodal Analysis Using An Exemplar From Japanese Television Advertising, Noel Murray Feb 2020

A Multimodal Analysis Using An Exemplar From Japanese Television Advertising, Noel Murray

Business Faculty Articles and Research

A multimodal analysis is used to investigate for the presence of situated meanings of uchi/soto in Japanese advertising. The analysis supports the proposition that discourses of gendered relations of uchi/soto may be found in contemporary Japanese television advertising. The article argues that relations of uchi/soto provide a unique window into Japanese consumption behavior. I advocate for multimodal critical discourse analysis as a preferred methodology and theoretical framework for multimodal advertising research applications. I discuss social and economic implications of reproducing gendered relations of uchi/soto in advertising and offer suggestions for future research on situated meanings.

Are Men Who Pay For Sex Sexist? Masculinity And Client Attitudes Toward Gender Role Equality In Different Prostitution Markets, Barbara G. Brents, Takashi Yamashita, Andrew L. Spivak, Olesya Venger, Christina Parreira, Alessandra Lanti Feb 2020

Are Men Who Pay For Sex Sexist? Masculinity And Client Attitudes Toward Gender Role Equality In Different Prostitution Markets, Barbara G. Brents, Takashi Yamashita, Andrew L. Spivak, Olesya Venger, Christina Parreira, Alessandra Lanti

Sociology Faculty Research

Prostitution clients’ attitudes toward gender equality are important indicators of how masculinity relates to the demand for commercial sexual services. Research on male client misogyny has been inconclusive, and few studies compare men in different markets. Using an online survey of 519 clients of sexual services, we examine whether male client attitudes toward gender role equality are related to the main methods customers used to access prostitution services (i.e., through print or online media vs. in-person contact). We found no differences among men in these markets in attitudes toward gender role equality in the workplace and home. This is in …

Impoverished Neighbourhoods & After-School Programs, Syed Bukhari Feb 2020

Impoverished Neighbourhoods & After-School Programs, Syed Bukhari

Social Justice and Community Engagement Major Research Papers

This paper examines the quality of Ontario’s after-school program as implemented by Rapport by using Tuason et al.’s (2009) criteria. The goal of this study is to answer the following questions: How the three core areas of the program are implemented and what activities are offered in the three core areas? How staff members and participant perceive the program and how the program impacts the lives of the participants? After-school programs have become an essential part of impoverished communities over the past three decades. The need of quality after-school programs in disadvantaged neighbourhoods has never been higher. Children residing in …

“Ready-Ready” To Teach: The Telling Case Of A Reflective Teacher-Practitioner, Olga Gould-Yakovleva Ph.D., Mary Mcvee Ph.D., David Fronczak M.Ed. Feb 2020

“Ready-Ready” To Teach: The Telling Case Of A Reflective Teacher-Practitioner, Olga Gould-Yakovleva Ph.D., Mary Mcvee Ph.D., David Fronczak M.Ed.

The Qualitative Report

This qualitative telling case study was situated within a broader project, which explored how the research participants modified their teaching after having completed their master’s program. We investigated reflective stance of a teacher-practitioner who was a graduate of a Master’s Literacy Specialist program, which promoted reflective teaching practices using videos of students’ own teaching. The research questions were: (1) How does the participant demonstrate his use of a reflective stance with regard to teaching practices? (2) What are the modifications in teaching practices that were made by the participant after the reflective video pedagogy course used in his graduate practicum? …

Methodological Dilemma In Microfinance Research: Applicability Of A Qualitative Case Study Design, Shahjahan Chowdhury, Faisal Ahmmed, Md. Ismail Hossain Feb 2020

Methodological Dilemma In Microfinance Research: Applicability Of A Qualitative Case Study Design, Shahjahan Chowdhury, Faisal Ahmmed, Md. Ismail Hossain

The Qualitative Report

This paper sheds light on the methodological dilemma in microfinance research and examines the feasibility of conducting a qualitative case study. Microfinance research is dominated by quantitative impact studies. However, the issues of process and implementation are critical to make an impact. The paper argues that a qualitative case study method can be used as a supplement or an alternative to quantitative methodology, because it is context-specific and naturally enquires research problem. The in-depth and in-detail inquiry make the findings more robust, and readers can understand the meaning holistically by reading stories and quotes. The case study can be used …

The People And Place Of Al-Hattaba: A Socio-Temporal Juncture, Heba El-Sawy Feb 2020

The People And Place Of Al-Hattaba: A Socio-Temporal Juncture, Heba El-Sawy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on a neighborhood located in Historic Cairo called al-Hattaba. It is a neighborhood that is located on the citadel wall, houses over 500 families, and is considered a buffer zone to the citadel with an urban fabric that speaks to a different time and place that has managed to survive, rupture and challenge our own perceptions of mainstream urban planning trends. I focus on rhythms of change and the experiences of temporality in the everyday as entry points into al-Hattaba and its people. The times of al-Hattaba cannot be reduced nor contained into a linear progression of …

Toward An Agent-Agnostic Transmission Model: Synthesizing Anthropocentric And Technocentric Paradigms In Communication, Jaime Banks, Maartje M. A. De Graaf Feb 2020

Toward An Agent-Agnostic Transmission Model: Synthesizing Anthropocentric And Technocentric Paradigms In Communication, Jaime Banks, Maartje M. A. De Graaf

Human-Machine Communication

Technological and social evolutions have prompted operational, phenomenological, and ontological shifts in communication processes. These shifts, we argue, trigger the need to regard human and machine roles in communication processes in a more egalitarian fashion. Integrating anthropocentric and technocentric perspectives on communication, we propose an agent-agnostic framework for human-machine communication. This framework rejects exclusive assignment of communicative roles (sender, message, channel, receiver) to traditionally held agents and instead focuses on evaluating agents according to their functions as a means for considering what roles are held in communication processes. As a first step in advancing this agent-agnostic perspective, this theoretical paper …

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The Special Issue Community, Natural Resources, and Sustainability seeks to engage in an interdisciplinary and international dialogue on the interrelationships of society, natural resources, and sustainability at the community level. In addition to introducing the twelve research articles published in this collection, we provide an overview of the existing literature on community and natural resource management, mainly through a review of previous reviews and a bibliometric analysis. While this literature is dominated by studies on various aspects of community-based natural resource management, the present Special Issue showcases multiple thematic areas of research that collectively contribute to a more complete understanding …
