The Murky Ethics Of Emoji: Comparative Responses To The Diversity Question, Elizabeth Kirley, Marilyn Mcmahon
The Murky Ethics Of Emoji: Comparative Responses To The Diversity Question, Elizabeth Kirley, Marilyn Mcmahon
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
The unassuming emoji was elevated to cultural icon in 2016 when New York’s Museum of Modern Art purchased the original designs for its permanent collection.1 The Museum praised those “humble masterpieces of design” as the seeds of a new visual language.2 Growing academic interest in emoji as non-verbal punctuation in social media speech is generally supportive of such accolades. Interest is particularly keen in the disciplines of linguistics, semiotics, neurology, human cognition, anthropology, machine learning, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and law.3 Somewhat puzzling, however, are the contradictory functions being assigned to those cartoonish icons: they can inject clarity, but might …

Cultural Competence And Racist Attitudes Of Direct Patient Care Registered Nurses In A Midwestern State, Linda Kay Hardy
Cultural Competence And Racist Attitudes Of Direct Patient Care Registered Nurses In A Midwestern State, Linda Kay Hardy
Dissertations
Racism has been implicated as one of the causes of health disparities in non-White population groups in the United States. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe cultural competence and racist attitudes of direct patient care registered nurses (DPC RNs) in a Midwestern state. The researcher hypothesized that racist attitudes impacted cultural competence, compromised the nurse-patient interaction, and potentially led to less than optimal patient outcomes. Critical Social Theory and Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality served as the framework for this quantitative, descriptive correlational dissertation research. Cultural competence was measured with the Cultural Competence …

Stories, Ethics And The Interpretation Of Meaning: Bearing Witness To Mothers' Stories Of Their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Experience, Angela C. Blackburn
Dissertations
This study grounded in narrative perspectives was conducted to uncover mothers' experience of having a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The purpose of this study was to describe and interpret mothers NICU experiences, and to sensitize health care professionals about the importance of mothers' personal experience stories. The NICU experience began with mothers' birth experience or the incident that led up to her infant requiring care in the NICU and her experience extended beyond the NICU with future concerns about the health and wellbeing of her baby.

Contributions Of Three Nursing Leaders To The Development Of Registered Nursing Education In Jamaica, 1946-1986, Hermi Hyacinth Hewitt
Dissertations
The historical research design is used to document the contributions that Misses Ruth Nita Barrow, Gertrude Hildegarde Swaby and Julie Symes made in advancing the status of professional nursing education in Jamaica, between 1946 and 1986. Their roles in the Jamaica General Trained Nurses Association and the General Nursing Council of Jamaica in obtaining registration for nurses' education in Jamaica, reciprocal agreement with England and Wales and professional recognition from the International Council of Nurses are discussed. Since nearly two decades of Barrow, Swaby and Symes' contributions to professional nursing's development occurred while Jamaica was a British colony, the economic, …

The Business Of Peace: Understanding Corporate Contributions To Conflict Management, Molly M. Melin
The Business Of Peace: Understanding Corporate Contributions To Conflict Management, Molly M. Melin
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Do private firms act beyond “business as usual” and proactively build peace? Firms are largely absent from the conflict management literature, despite studies suggesting their importance. What conditions encourage firms to actively prevent or resolve violent conflict? Are such actions interdependent with ongoing international conflict prevention and management efforts? I argue international efforts encourage corporate conflict management-related activities since conflict management interdependencies can decrease the costs of conflict management, while increasing the benefits and success of their efforts. In addition, firms respond to gaps in governance and instability, especially when they are norm entrepreneurs or their reputation is threatened. I …

Neanderthal-Denisovan Ancestors Interbred With A Distantly Related Hominin, Alan R. Rogers, Nathan S. Harris, Alan A. Achenbach
KIP Articles
Previous research has shown that modern Eurasians interbred with their Neanderthal and Denisovan predecessors. We show here that hundreds of thousands of years earlier, the ancestors of Neanderthals and Denisovans interbred with their own Eurasian predecessors—members of a “superarchaic” population that separated from other humans about 2 million years ago. The superarchaic population was large, with an effective size between 20 and 50 thousand individuals. We confirm previous findings that (i) Denisovans also interbred with superarchaics, (ii) Neanderthals and Denisovans separated early in the middle Pleistocene, (iii) their ancestors endured a bottleneck of population size, and (iv) the Neanderthal population …

The ability to generate genomic data from wild animal populations has the potential to give unprecedented insight into the population history and dynamics of species in their natural habitats. However, in the case of many species, it is impossible legally, ethically, or logistically to obtain tissues samples of high-quality necessary for genomic analyses. In this study we evaluate the success of multiple sources of genetic material (feces, urine, dentin, and dental calculus) and several capture methods (shotgun, whole-genome, exome) in generating genome-scale data in wild eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. We found that …

Missionary Nurse Dorothy Davis Cook, 1940-1972: "Mother Of Swazi Nurses", Susan E. Elliott
Dissertations
Dramatically absent from nursing's historical knowledge and professional recognition are the lives, roles, contributions, and legacies of Christian faith-based nurses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ministry and service of Sister Tutor Dorothy Davis Cook, Church of the Nazarene missionary nurse in the African country of Swaziland 1940 to 1972. The multi-dimensional, multi-task expanded roles manifested in her integration of Christian missionary and nurse were explored and her legacy identified.
United States Resident, Jordanian And Palestinian Women's Participation In Breast Cancer Screening, Lina N. Kawar
United States Resident, Jordanian And Palestinian Women's Participation In Breast Cancer Screening, Lina N. Kawar
Dissertations
Breast cancer is a threatening disease to women worldwide. Breast cancer screening (BCS) is a key to early detection and reduced mortality. Factors predicting women's participation in BCS have been well studied in the United States (US), including among major US racial and ethnic minority groups. Factors predicting participation in BCS among immigrant ethnic groups, such as Arab women, are less well studied, especially cultural factors that may be barriers to BCS. The purposes of this cross-sectional, predictive, correlational study were to: (1) describe US resident-Jordanian and Palestinian women's psychological variables (feelings, attitudes, and habits) toward participation in BCS, (2) …

Impacts Of Invasive Rats On Hawaiian Cave Resources, Francis G. Howarth, Fred D. Stone
Impacts Of Invasive Rats On Hawaiian Cave Resources, Francis G. Howarth, Fred D. Stone
International Journal of Speleology
Although there are no published studies and limited data documenting damage by rodents in Hawaiian caves, our incidental observations during more than 40 years of surveying caves indicate that introduced rodents, especially the roof rat, Rattus rattus, pose significant threats to vulnerable cave resources. Caves, with their nearly constant and predictable physical environment often house important natural and cultural features including biological, paleontological, geological, climatic, mineralogical, cultural, and archaeological resources. All four invasive rodents in Hawai‘i commonly nest in cave entrances and rock shelters, but only the roof rat (Rattus rattus) habitually enters caves and utilizes areas …

The social structure of primates has recently been shown to influence the composition of their microbiomes. What is less clear is how primate microbiomes might in turn influence their social behavior, either in general or with particular reference to hominins. Here we use a comparative approach to understand how microbiomes of hominins have, or might have, changed since the last common ancestor (LCA) of chimpanzees and humans, roughly six million years ago. We focus on microbiomes associated with social evolution, namely those hosted or influenced by stomachs, intestines, armpits, and food fermentation. In doing so, we highlight the potential influence …

Developing Anti-Oppressive Practice With The Person-In-Society: Reflexivity And Social Work, Stan Houston, Gerry Marshall
Developing Anti-Oppressive Practice With The Person-In-Society: Reflexivity And Social Work, Stan Houston, Gerry Marshall
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Not much has been written on the subject of reflexivity in social work practice. Taking a definition of reflexivity that encourages the inquirer to consider how various psycho-social positions and power-saturated social spheres have shaped individual meaning and narrative, this article outlines a reflexive model that can be applied by social workers to enhance their understanding and implementation of anti-oppressive practice. The model builds on earlier theoretical work and evaluation carried out by the lead author but updates it by including new theoretical insights from both authors. The conceptualisation centres on five imbricated and power-saturated domains of understanding: the domains …
Placing Irish Social Work In A Global Context: Assembling International Comparisons Through The Literature, Susan Flynn, Leigh-Ann Sweeney
Placing Irish Social Work In A Global Context: Assembling International Comparisons Through The Literature, Susan Flynn, Leigh-Ann Sweeney
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
There is an absence of literature that places social work practice in Ireland within a global context. This circumstance is obstructive to students and practitioners of social work in Ireland, who must increasingly demonstrate understanding of social work as an international endeavour. Ireland is also steadily more globalised and multi-cultural. In social work, related changes underway include increased transience of persons across national lines, and complex transnational social problems. In this context, social workers may broaden their understanding of Irish practice through drawing upon learning from elsewhere. To facilitate this, critical commentary on the literature in this article operates around …
