Investigating Maya Terminal Classic Period Architecture At Plaza H, Cahal Pech, Belize, Rachel A. Steffen
Investigating Maya Terminal Classic Period Architecture At Plaza H, Cahal Pech, Belize, Rachel A. Steffen
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Located in the Upper Belize River Valley, Cahal Pech sits on a large hilltop overlooking the town of San Ignacio, Belize. The site represents a medium size ceremonial/administrative center active from the Preclassic through Classic Maya; it is one of 14 archaeological preserves interpreted and open to the general public in Belize. The final occupation of the center has been the subject of intensive ongoing research through a partnership between the University of Montana Anthropology Department and the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project (BVAR). This research has focused on Plaza H, located in the northeastern portion of the site. The …
The Evolution Of Foliate Bifaces In Northwest North America, Megan Denis
The Evolution Of Foliate Bifaces In Northwest North America, Megan Denis
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Foliate or leaf-shaped bifacial tools are widely distributed through time and space in the Pacific Northwest region. Despite a number of previous studies, we still know little concerning the development and persistence of variation in these tools. This study applies phylogenetic analysis to collections of leaf-shaped bifacial tools from six archaeological sites from the Pacific Northwest. Phylogenetic analysis is a useful tool for studying cultural macroevolution, in this case, the pattern and process of descent with modification in tool manufacturing systems. The sites chosen for this study span the last ten thousand years and extend from southeast Alaska to northern …
Inter-Site Evidence Of Social Inequality In The Middle Fraser Canyon, British Columbia, Rebekah J. Engelland
Inter-Site Evidence Of Social Inequality In The Middle Fraser Canyon, British Columbia, Rebekah J. Engelland
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The archaeological record of the Middle Fraser Canyon provides abundant evidence of social inequality. While inequality in this region is typically identified on an intra-site basis, it has rarely been examined using inter-site data. By pulling together evidence from three different sites, it is possible to see a pattern of households with differential access to resources including food and prestige items.
Located in south-central British Columbia, the Middle Fraser Canyon is home to a wide variety of environments. The sites being considered here were pithouse villages. A pithouse is a semi-subterranean structure where a pit is dug and then a …
Congenitally Missing Maxillary First Molars: A Case Study Conducted On Fsd 19-161, Hope A. Vance
Congenitally Missing Maxillary First Molars: A Case Study Conducted On Fsd 19-161, Hope A. Vance
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Congenitally missing maxillary first molars are considered a trait that is indicative of Asian ancestry, specifically Japanese. Previous studies, including the one conducted by Ryota Abea et. al (2010), have linked the absence of this tooth with groupings of individuals that originate in this region of the world. In the forensic context, understanding the congenital absence of this molar can allow for greater interpretation of the skeletal remains and provide the forensic anthropologist the ability to create a more accurate biological profile of the individual in question.
FSD 19-161 arrived at the University of Montana from the Petroleum County Coroner’s …
Sacralization Of The Fifth Lumbar Vertebra, Samantha Hofland
Sacralization Of The Fifth Lumbar Vertebra, Samantha Hofland
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Sacralization of the fifth lumbar vertebra, also known as Lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) (Jancuska et al, 2015), is a common congenital pathology that may affect up to 30% of the population (Alonzo et al, 2018). This condition is characterized by the enlargement, psuedo-articulation or fusion of one or both transverse processes of the fifth lumbar vertebrae to the sacrum.
FSD 19- 232 arrived at the University of Montana Forensic Anthropology laboratory and was assigned by Dr. Kirsten Green Mink to Samantha Ramey and Samantha Hofland for forensic anthropological analysis. This case present unilateral stage 2 sacralization of the fifth lumbar …
A New Classification System For Analyzing Burned Human Remains, Amanda Williams
A New Classification System For Analyzing Burned Human Remains, Amanda Williams
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Fires can alter human remains in various ways; however, complete destruction of a human body by burning is impossible and skeletal remains can almost always be recovered. Fatal fires produce a range of physical alterations to the body, from blistering of soft tissue to the calcination of bones.Theses physical alterations leave patterns that can be studied and analyzed to interpret perimortem events. A variety of forensic professionals interact with and analyze these remains postmortem, which can lead to variation in how remains are described.
Currently, the forensic community lacks a consistent, objective, and detailed scale to describe burn injuries or …

A Grounded Theory Of Professional Development Preferences Of Millennial Educational Professionals, Bobbie M. Downs
A Grounded Theory Of Professional Development Preferences Of Millennial Educational Professionals, Bobbie M. Downs
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this grounded research study is to answer the question: How should professional development be designed to best meet the preferences of educational professionals of the millennial generation? As the workplace, including the field of education, becomes more generationally diverse, it is education leaders who must learn the unique needs of their staff members and develop meaningful professional development opportunities that meet these requirements. Both generational cohort theory and transformative learning theory became the underpinnings of the research. The research was conducted primarily through qualitative interviews at an educational services commission in New Jersey. A theory about millennial …
The Aesthetic Society And Its Gatekeepers, Aaron Francis Ward
The Aesthetic Society And Its Gatekeepers, Aaron Francis Ward
Japanese Society and Culture
The current study draws on Saito’s (2007) application to western context of the Japanese practice of appreciating the aesthetic and ethical aspects of everyday objects, examined through the complexity of aesthetic evaluation. Bourdieu’s (1984a) moderating variable cultural capital is used to advance an understanding of perceptual and linguistic complexity in daily aesthetic consumption. By engaging participants in a quasi-experiment of multi-sensory trials of everyday products (lemon squeezers), an examination was made of how language use reveals embodied knowledge of daily consumption practice. As the participants’ volumes of cultural capital increased, there was a greater tendency to categorize the stimuli according …

Using Families' Funds Of Knowledge Literacy To Enhance Family-School Relationships, Kaitlyn Greenwood
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents the initial findings from an ethnographic case study, in a small South Jersey town. Using a socio-cultural framework and drawing from Moll and Gonzalez's funds of knowledge study, the specific aim of the study was to investigate the literacy practices students bring to the classroom, families' views of home to school connection, educators' impression of the family school partnership, and the role of student's funds of knowledge in the classroom. Three second grade families participated in home visits which involved in-depth interviews detailing family literacies including culture, traditions, family background, early literacy practices, and value of education. …
The Role Of Financial Insecurity And Expectations On Perspectives Of Mental Health Services Among Refugees, Jacqueline M. Siven
The Role Of Financial Insecurity And Expectations On Perspectives Of Mental Health Services Among Refugees, Jacqueline M. Siven
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how perspectives of mental health among refugees are situated within the realities of the refugee resettlement system, a population for which information on this issue is quite limited. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation with Congolese refugees and non-Congolese refugee-serving professionals in a major Florida city, this dissertation examines how perceptions of mental health and mental health services among refugees were affected by financial insecurity and disparities in expectations. Local Congolese refugees expected the American Dream; they believed that once they arrived they would find prosperity through hard work. Instead they experienced frustration and distress because the …
Maus, Masks, And The Performance Of Identity, Amie Zimmerman
Maus, Masks, And The Performance Of Identity, Amie Zimmerman
University Honors Theses
Beginning with Art Spiegelman’s graphic memoir Maus, this essay discusses how masks are used as signs or symbols for projecting cultural and ethnic identity. Spiegelman uses masks to illustrate the properties of Jewish identity as both fixed and fluid, revealing the function of masks to be culturally relative. Cultural frameworks, called indices by anthropologist Donald Pollock, contain each culture’s rules for what comprises meaningful and believable identity. As collections of identity markers, masks have the power to represent as well as erase the wearer when societies demand the performance of identity. In her book Citizen, poet-critic Claudia Rankine …

Hidden Dangers To Researcher Safety While Sampling Freshwater Benthic Macroinvertebrates, Ralph D. Stoaks
Hidden Dangers To Researcher Safety While Sampling Freshwater Benthic Macroinvertebrates, Ralph D. Stoaks
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Abstract
This paper reviews hidden dangers that threaten the safety of freshwater (FW) researchers of benthic macroinvertebrates (BMIs). Six refereed journals containing 2,075 papers were reviewed for field research resulting in 505 FW BMI articles. However, danger was reported in only 18% of FW BMI papers. I discussed: 1) papers that did not warn of existing danger and consider researcher safety, 2) metric threshold values (e.g., chemical hazards), and non-metric dangers, (e.g., caves and aquatic habitats), 3), the frequency of danger occurrence, 4) baseline and extreme values. Examples of 28 danger factors that posed a threat to BMI researchers in …

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Evolutionary History Of Native Human Populations Of Northwest Patagonia (Argentina), María Bárbara Postillone, Virginia Agustina Cobos, Celmira Urrutia, Cristina Beatriz Dejean, Paula N. Gonzalez, Sergio Ivan Perez, Valeria Bernal
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The genetic composition of Amerindian descendants from Patagonia has long been a focus of interest, although the information available is still scarce for many geographic areas. Here, we report the first analysis of the variation in the mtDNA control region for an area of northwestern Patagonia, the North of Neuquén, with the aim of studying the processes and historical events that modeled the evolutionary history of these human groups. We analyzed 113 individuals from two localities of northern Neuquén, along with 6 from southern Neuquén and 223 mtDNA sequences previously published from neighboring areas from Argentina and Chile. We estimated …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Background: Non-invasive biomarkers can facilitate health assessments in wild primate populations by reducing the need for direct access to animals. Neopterin is a biomarker that is a product of the cell-mediated immune response, with high levels being indicative of poor survival expectations in some cases. The measurement of urinary neopterin concentration (UNC) has been validated as a method for monitoring cell-mediated immune system activation in multiple catarrhine species, but to date there is no study testing its utility in the urine of platyrrhine species. In this study, we collected urine samples across three platyrrhine families including small captive populations of …

Changes In Globalization: How Should Ib Education Respond?, Nancy R. Buchan, Elizabeth C. Ravlin, Orgul D. Ozturk
Faculty Publications
A new phase of globalization has made the world cognizant of the job losses, inequality of gains across countries and socio-economic sectors, and climate degradation that has resulted from prior global business practices. We examine what changes international business (IB) education should consider as these patterns evolve. Non-routine analytical skills and global interpersonal skills will still be important in the changing economy. However, evidence suggests that IB education should also emphasize broader knowledge of politics, institutions, sociology, and anthropology in order to help future business leaders navigate and balance the increasingly complex requirements of both local and global stakeholder interests.
