Conditions Of Enablement Of Sound Practices In Hong Kong And Manila, Dayang Magdalena Nirvana Tamanio Yraola Mar 2020

Conditions Of Enablement Of Sound Practices In Hong Kong And Manila, Dayang Magdalena Nirvana Tamanio Yraola

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

While sound practices in Hong Kong and Manila operate separately, they are interlinked by various factors that have enabled their practices, respectively. This research is a study of such connection. In particular, I claim that sound practices in Hong Kong and Manila share distinct characteristics that allow inter-referencing to be adopted as an effective tool in approaching the problem at hand. Sound practice for both Hong Kong and Manila is uniquely located in the interstices of music and art—a location where their distinct form, history, and ethics are entangled with those of music and art. I argue that this unique …

Prek–5 Teacher Views Of Professional Development Integrating Common Core Language Arts With Science And Social Studies, Janie Hubbard, Melisa Fowler, Lee Freeman Mar 2020

Prek–5 Teacher Views Of Professional Development Integrating Common Core Language Arts With Science And Social Studies, Janie Hubbard, Melisa Fowler, Lee Freeman

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Three preK–6 U.S. university methods instructors-researchers (literacy, science, social studies) joined 17 Title I school teachers for collaborative lesson planning and teaching within the preK–5 school setting. Each team’s goal was to create and teach interdisciplinary curriculum units using U.S. English language arts Common Core State Standards with social studies and science. A year-long instrumental case study design was used to examine (a) how teachers perceived collaborative professional development to create interdisciplinary unit plans and (b) how teachers viewed outcomes of teaching interdisciplinary units of their own design. Practice articles regarding Common Core State Standards curricula integration are plentiful; however, …

Investigating Trump's Stance On The Killing Of The Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi In Terms Of John W. Du Bois' Model, Majid Salih Kalaf Mar 2020

Investigating Trump's Stance On The Killing Of The Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi In Terms Of John W. Du Bois' Model, Majid Salih Kalaf

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This paper deals with a very recent, heated and important topic: the murder of Jamal Khashoggi by exploring the theoretical assumptions of stance, as the norms of interpersonal meaning in the discourse of politics and to investigate the production of stance in interviews. In this study, the researcher has adopted Du Bois' model of "The Stance Triangle" 2007 in investigating the political stances of D. Trump concerning this crime. The results have shown that Trump has taken a stance that is supportive of Saudi Arabia regardless of who is the one who committed the murder of the Saudi Journalist Jamal …

Contemplating Reflexivity As A Practice Of Authenticity In Autoethnographic Research, Adam Wiesner

The Qualitative Report

This personal narrative shares a perspective of a non-binary trans qualitative writer who engages in the reflexive practice of evolutionary astrology. The author focuses on vulnerable, healing and therapeutic aspects of autoethnographic writing, and his quest for being authentic while dealing with difficult emotions related to his “misfit feeling” when crossing the boundary lines within Slovak academia.

A Review Of Qualitative Methods In Health Communication Research, Liza Ngenye, Gary Kreps Mar 2020

A Review Of Qualitative Methods In Health Communication Research, Liza Ngenye, Gary Kreps

The Qualitative Report

This paper examines the ways that qualitative inquiry can be especially useful for gathering relevant descriptive data that can provide a deep understanding of health communication issues and processes, as well as to provide evidence-based guidance for addressing key challenges of health care delivery and promotion. This article promotes methodological diversity in research designs and illustrates the value of employing qualitative methods such as ethnography and grounded theory in health communication research. It is also provides calls for the application of less-used, unfamiliar qualitative methods such as phenomenology. Our careful bibliographic review of health communication research studies published over the …

The Heritage Buddhist Manuscripts Of Ladakh Tibetan Buddhist Canons And The Perfection Of Wisdom Sutra, Georgios T . Halkias Mar 2020

The Heritage Buddhist Manuscripts Of Ladakh Tibetan Buddhist Canons And The Perfection Of Wisdom Sutra, Georgios T . Halkias

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The history of the earliest transmission of Indian Buddhism to Tibet in the 7th– 8thcenturies is in essence the story of the transmission of its scriptures. Tibetan translations of Sanskrit texts from the early imperial period, along with manuscripts translated from the 11thcentury onwards, contributed to the formation of Buddhist scriptural collections. Today different versions of the Tibetan Kangyur survive in the interior and at the margins of the Tibetan cultural world. This Perspectives piece serves as a modest introduction to the illustrated Prajñāpāramitā manuscripts and handwritten Buddhist canons preserved in the Indian north-western Himalayas. Their further study will undoubtedly …

The Negotiation Of Religious Identity Of Muslim Women In Leh District, Ladakh, Samina Rehman Mar 2020

The Negotiation Of Religious Identity Of Muslim Women In Leh District, Ladakh, Samina Rehman

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper examines the negotiation of religious identity among Sunni Muslim women in Leh, Ladakh. Although Muslims in Leh share the same socio-cultural environment with Buddhists, the differences between the two communities have become more pronounced in recent decades. The assertion of religious identity and increasing religiosity in the form of vegetarianism among Buddhists and strict veiling among Muslim women are fairly visible. Changes are also seen in religious practices, including the imposition of a strict prohibition on dance, music, and alcohol consumption among Muslims. Here, I explore the manner in which religious identity is perceived and propagated among Muslim …

The Sacred And The Secular: Exploring Mass Tourism Encounters At Lamayuru Monastery In Ladakh, Tashi Lundup Mar 2020

The Sacred And The Secular: Exploring Mass Tourism Encounters At Lamayuru Monastery In Ladakh, Tashi Lundup

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper is an attempt to understand and conceptualize tourism and changing monastic space in Ladakh with special reference to the Lamayuru monastery. The study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach, drawing on participant observation as well as interviews with both monks and tourists. It shows how local monastic culture has been reconstructed as a marketable commodity for tourist consumption and explores the tensions that arise from the use of the same monastic space for both religious and secular purposes. The monks’ views in relation to the changing context of tourism at the Lamayuru monastery reflect a dual perspective, representing both …

When Buddhism Meets Bollywood: The Naropa 2016 Festival In Ladakh, India, Elizabeth Williams-Oerberg

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In September 2016, hundreds of thousands of devotees gathered in Ladakh to celebrate the millennial anniversary of Naropa (1016- 1100 CE), an Indian Buddhist scholar-saint who is widely revered in the Himalayas. Deemed ‘Naropa 2016,’ this Himalayan Buddhist festival centered on the ritual of na ro gyen druk (Tib. na ro rgyan drug), the ‘Six Bone Ornaments of Naropa.’ What was announced as a sacred Buddhist ritual of revealing these ornaments, also included evening performances by renowned Bollywood performers with booming sound and impressive light shows enjoyed by large crowds of monks and laity until late in the night. This …

Manepa In Ladakh: The Revival Of A Religious Tradition, Pascale Dollfus Mar 2020

Manepa In Ladakh: The Revival Of A Religious Tradition, Pascale Dollfus

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Among Buddhist religious specialists in Ladakh, there were until recently people called manepa, the Ladakhi pronunciation of the Tibetan word manipa, literally ‘the one [who recites] mani’. In the western Himalayas the repertoire of these non-monastic practitioners not only contains the famous mantra dedicated to the Great Compassion Bodhisattva Chenrezi (Skt. Avalokiteśvara), but also dozens of biographies which imply liberation in the Buddhist sense of the word and which praise the victory of Dharma over heretics. The Masters of the mani mantra are tantrists who regard the fourteenth-century Tibetan saint Thangtong Gyalpo as their founding preceptor. Among other skills, they …

Rahul Sankrityayan, Tsetan Phuntsog And Tibetan Textbooks For Ladakh In 1933, John Bray, Martijn Van Beek, Tsering Gonkatsang, Phuntsok Wangchuk

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In 1933 the Indian scholar and social activist Rahul Sankrityayan (1893-1963) compiled a set of four Tibetan-language readers and a grammar for use in Ladakhi schools, together with his Ladakhi colleague Tsetan Phuntsog. The readers contain a mix of material from Western, Indian, Ladakhi and Tibetan sources. This includes simple essays about ‘air’ and ‘water’, selections from Aesop’s fables, Indian folk stories, biographies of famous people in Ladakhi and Tibetan history, poems by Ladakhi authors, and extracts from the Treasury of Elegant Sayings by Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltsen (1182-1251). This essay begins with a review of earlier Tibetan-language schoolbooks published …

Impacts Of Yartsa Gunbu Harvesting On Alpine Ecosystems In The Barun Valley, Makalu-Barun National Park, Nepal, Alton C. Byers, Elizabeth Byers, Milan Shrestha, Dambar Thapa, Bidhya Sharma Mar 2020

Impacts Of Yartsa Gunbu Harvesting On Alpine Ecosystems In The Barun Valley, Makalu-Barun National Park, Nepal, Alton C. Byers, Elizabeth Byers, Milan Shrestha, Dambar Thapa, Bidhya Sharma

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Around 2003, the highly valuable medicinal fungi Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Nepali: yartsa gunbu) began to be commercially harvested in the remote Barun valley of the Makalu-Barun National Park and Buffer Zone, eastern Nepal. Since then, an estimated 3,000 collectors per year have visited the valley each harvesting season, placing new pressures upon its subalpine and alpine landscapes. A review of the yartsa gunbu literature suggested that its harvesting throughout highland India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China has brought important economic benefits, but that it has often been accompanied by a corresponding increase in negative environmental impacts such as alpine shrub destruction, wildlife …

Historicizing The Emergence Of Global Mental Health In Nepal (1950-2019), Aidan Seale-Feldman

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article traces a genealogy of mental health governance in Nepal as it was constituted in and through an assemblage of historical events, local politics, personal relationships and trends in the field of global health development. The relation between health development and local politics in Nepal is explored across four periods in the history of global health: 1) the early health development programs of disease eradication after the end of the Rana oligarchy (1951-1970); 2) the turn to primary health care during the Panchayat (1970-1990); 3) the rise of NGOs and the People’s War (1990-2010); and 4) the return to …

Youth Political Engagement And Democratic Culture In Republican Nepal, Tom O'Neill, Bijaya Raj Poudel, Nabin Maharjan Mar 2020

Youth Political Engagement And Democratic Culture In Republican Nepal, Tom O'Neill, Bijaya Raj Poudel, Nabin Maharjan

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Nepal’s transformation from an autocratic monarchy to a democratic republic presupposes the development of democratic institutions, and the current generation of Nepali youth, particularly those in higher education, are uniquely situated in that process. As such Nepali youth constitute a distinct generation along the lines specified by Karl Mannheim and others. In the past efforts to mobilize Nepalese youth have been aimed at integrating them as useful assets in the service of Nepalese political institutions, such as political student unions, but in this paper, based on fieldwork and interview data collected in 2013 and 2016, we argue that politically active …

The Vulnerable State And Technical Fixes: An Analysis Of Official Climate Change Discourses In Nepal, Pearly Wong Mar 2020

The Vulnerable State And Technical Fixes: An Analysis Of Official Climate Change Discourses In Nepal, Pearly Wong

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

I conduct discourse analysis of seven selected official climate change policies and documents of Nepal. In the first part of my analysis, I draw from international climate justice discourses to analyze how policy makers construct Nepal’s position in the global arena, in relation to the issue of climate change. In the second part, I draw from political ecology and anthropological understandings of ‘vulnerability’ and ‘adaptation’ to analyze how policy makers construct those terms in the context of Nepal. The result shows that Nepal has adhered to the ‘vulnerability’ and ‘transition’ discourses, which serve as important tools to advocate for financial …

The Interwoven Existences Of Official Catholicism And Magical Practice In The Lived Religiosity Of A Transylvanian Hungarian Village, Cecília Sándor Mar 2020

The Interwoven Existences Of Official Catholicism And Magical Practice In The Lived Religiosity Of A Transylvanian Hungarian Village, Cecília Sándor

Journal of Global Catholicism

During the last five years I have been doing field research in a Transylvanian Hungarian village, Sânsimion (Hu: Csíkszentsimon). I present my research on this religiously homogenous, Catholic community’s worldview. Based on interviews conducted with members of the village’s various age groups, I map religious and magical knowledge passed down through the generations, using the theoretical frame of collective memory and religious transmission. Second, I highlight two different but coexisting “constructions of reality” in this rural community. By “constructions of reality,” I mean interpretations of reality expressed in narrative discourses and local magical practices that are closely and inextricably interwoven …

Rockin' The Church: Vernacular Catholic Musical Practices, Kinga Povedak Mar 2020

Rockin' The Church: Vernacular Catholic Musical Practices, Kinga Povedak

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article focuses on the unique dimensions of lived or vernacular Catholicism through the analysis of contemporary congregational music in Hungary. Looking at the musical lives of Hungarian Roman Catholics from the late 1960s to contemporary times can provide us with new understandings of the theological contents and aesthetics, as well as the vernacular religiosity of the community. Christian popular music appeared behind the Iron Curtain relatively early, in 1967 when the first “beat mass” was created and introduced at Budapest. The early Christian popular music sounded astonishingly similar to the songs of the American Folk Mass Movement of the …

Longings, Letters And Prayers: Visitor's Books At Hungarian Marian Shrines, Krisztina Frauhammer Mar 2020

Longings, Letters And Prayers: Visitor's Books At Hungarian Marian Shrines, Krisztina Frauhammer

Journal of Global Catholicism

The following study seeks to show the flow of contemporary rituals associated with pilgrimage shrines. I will consider how visitor’s books placed on display at shrine churches are being utilized in the modern context by pilgrims and tourists alike. Requests, words of thanksgiving, and testimony are coupled with an honest, reflexive style that lends to the formation of these individualized prayers. These prayers are original, specific and peculiar as they follow patterns that are informal in nature. These prayers allow pilgrims to initiate contact with the Transcendent through the act and practice of writing. An idiosyncratic form of sacred communication …

Leading For Social Justice: A Call To Action To Improve Society., Teresa L. G. Warner Mar 2020

Leading For Social Justice: A Call To Action To Improve Society., Teresa L. G. Warner

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

School leaders are required to prepare students for a globally competitive society, and act ethically to facilitate a shared vision of school practices that serve all students equitably. Social justice leadership provided in school and teacher leadership preparation programs is a way to meet the standards for school executives and teachers. The decision to lead for social justice can be made as a result of district mandates while some leaders are motivated by personal experiences. Leaders are distracted from the importance of leading for social justice due to the pressures of accountability testing and the political outcry of the day. …

Book Review: Violence And Nonviolence: Conceptual Excursions Into Phantom Opposites, Rene Mcgraw Osb

The Journal of Social Encounters

The reader is first struck by the immense bibliography of the author, Peyman Vahabzadeh. The author is well-acquainted with both the relevant peace studies literature and philosophy. In addition he has a section where he comments on two of Tolstoy’s short stories “Ezarhaddon of Assyria” and The Three Questions.”

The fundamental strength of this book is its character as a literature review of the topic from a philosophic perspective. Its fundamental weakness is its character as a literature review of the topic from a philosophic perspective. The book contains so many brilliant examples of people who have written and …
