Passing Down The Rolling Pin: Lefse, Memory, And A Norwegian-American Identity, Rebecca Garbe Apr 2020

Passing Down The Rolling Pin: Lefse, Memory, And A Norwegian-American Identity, Rebecca Garbe

Scandinavian Studies Student Award

This paper explores the intersections between memory and food-making and how they inform a Norwegian-American cultural identity. Based on fieldwork done in June and July of 2019 in Fosston, Minnesota, I use lefse, a Norwegian potato-based flatbread, as a focal point, for analysis. I argue that lefse-making in Fosston acts as a medium through which residents engage with a collective memory of an immigrant heritage. This traditional food-making, I assert, relies on knowledge passed down through and across family lines allowing food-makers and eaters to experience an embodied connection to their cultural past. Investigating my own Norwegian heritage, I draw …

Rhetoric and International Human Rights: The Case of the Senegalese Talibés

Sponsor: Lynne Derbyshire (Communication Studies, Honors Program)

While in Senegal, I witnessed the hurdles faced by proponents of international human rights standards. Thousands of Muslim boys, called talibés, undertake their Koranic education in Senegal. Many are forced to beg in the streets by their educators, and abuse in the schools is common. Still, this education is considered a valuable part of the boys’ spiritual development. Despite the multitude of countries that have openly supported and ratified international human rights compacts, many …

Evolution Science And Imago Dei: A Richer And More Robust Treatment Of Theological Anthropology, Gansa Tchétongbé Cathérin Paterne Apr 2020

Evolution Science And Imago Dei: A Richer And More Robust Treatment Of Theological Anthropology, Gansa Tchétongbé Cathérin Paterne

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

In my thesis, Evolution Science and the Imago Dei: A Richer and more Robust Treatment of Theological Anthropology, the first chapter demonstrates, from the historical analysis of the content attributed to the concept imago Dei over the centuries, that different ages in the Church have interpreted the content of that expression in different ways. From this historical analysis that the imago Dei assumes different meanings at different points in history, I justify my expectation that the term is open to ever new meanings.

With the second chapter, by exploring the evolutionary contribution to the emergence of modern human, I …

Kāḇôḏ (Glory) RûAḤ (Spirit) And Yaḏ (Hand) Divine Presence And Activity Of Ezekiel (Ezek 1-3; 8-11; 40-48) Thirdspacing The Exile And Its Implications To The Theology Of Divine Presence, Malachy Udochukwu Theophilus Apr 2020

Kāḇôḏ (Glory) RûAḤ (Spirit) And Yaḏ (Hand) Divine Presence And Activity Of Ezekiel (Ezek 1-3; 8-11; 40-48) Thirdspacing The Exile And Its Implications To The Theology Of Divine Presence, Malachy Udochukwu Theophilus

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

In Ezek 1-3; 8-11 and 40-48, Ezekiel saw the ("visions of God"). In these visions one observes that the presence of YHWH is experienced in three different spaces: in the temple, in exile and on the mountain east of the city. These manifestations of the divine presence in different spaces challenged the traditional priestly understanding of YHWH as exclusively "tabernacled" in the Jerusalem temple. Thus in this research, I investigate, not only where God is really found, but also the implication of the movements of the (glory of God) from the sacred space to the non sacred space and back …

The Question Of Method In Theology: An African Response To Bernard Lonergan Using Bantu Theological Anthropology, Andrew Simpasa Apr 2020

The Question Of Method In Theology: An African Response To Bernard Lonergan Using Bantu Theological Anthropology, Andrew Simpasa

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

The question of method in theology has become the locus of contemporary intercultural and cross-cultural theological investigations. For any theological system to claim credulity in the public opinion of theological discourse it must demonstrate credible methodological processes inherent in its epistemological process to affirm the validity of its knowledge claims. It is method in theology which is among the criteria used to evaluate the theological integrity of an epistemic system. This paper, therefore, endeavors to explain the existence of method(s) not only in discursive and formal theologies but also in the theologies of ordinary people and communities alike. The paper …

The Dynamics Of Conversion Of Ignatius Of Loyola As A Contribution To The Novice Formation In The Context Of Vietnam, Tang Van Nguyen Apr 2020

The Dynamics Of Conversion Of Ignatius Of Loyola As A Contribution To The Novice Formation In The Context Of Vietnam, Tang Van Nguyen

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Understanding the meaning of conversion as a new way of reorientation of oneself towards God and others can empower the Jesuit novice toward the fulfillment of his vocation. For Christians and especially for Jesuit novices, understanding conversion is celebrating and actualizing conversion to God in daily life and always choosing Jesus Christ as the principle and foundation of personal transformation.

Understanding conversion as authentic self-transformation can support interreligious dialogue between Christians and other religious traditions in Vietnam. Authentic conversion leads a person to realize the forgiving and compassionate presence of transcendent Reality. Respectful interreligious dialogue also challenges one’s own conversion. …

Measuring Iron Concentrations In Individuals With Cribra Orbitalia And Porotic Hyperostosis Using Xrf, Eduardo Maya Apr 2020

Measuring Iron Concentrations In Individuals With Cribra Orbitalia And Porotic Hyperostosis Using Xrf, Eduardo Maya

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

One controversy within bioarchaeology revolves around identifying what factors cause cribra orbitalia (CO) and porotic hyperostosis (PH). These two pathological conditions identified by porosities on the human cranium are used by bioarchaeologists as indicators of the overall health of archaeological human remains. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was once widely believed to cause these conditions. Because of the hypothesis connecting CO and PH to IDA, researchers often assume remains with porosities were afflicted with IDA. This leads to other assumptions about that individual’s life history, including assumptions that afflicted individuals may have had parasitic infections, limited diet (i.e., mal- or under-nutrition), …

The Manifestation Of Colonization Across Calendars In Periphery Countries, Elsa Yehdego Apr 2020

The Manifestation Of Colonization Across Calendars In Periphery Countries, Elsa Yehdego

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

Societies across the globe use calendars to track the passing of time, holidays, and special occasions, however, little is known about how some countries’ use of calendars shifted or stayed the same, over time. According to the Oxford dictionary, a calendar is defined as, “a system according to which the beginning and length of successive civil years.” However, the definition of calendars varies from source to source. The primary purpose of this research is to analyze and diagnose, the lack of knowledge on colonization and its correlation to calendars in periphery countries. According to the Oxford dictionary the word colonize …

Determining Dietary Niche In Primates Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence, Theresa Schwartz Apr 2020

Determining Dietary Niche In Primates Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence, Theresa Schwartz

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

Diet is a critical component of the ecology of extant and extinct animals. Many dietary reconstructions involve destruction of the sample. Portable X-Ray fluorescence (pXRF), however, is a non-destructive method of gathering elemental data from skeletal remains, plants, or otherwise. This is very important for research in biological anthropology and diet reconstructions because it leaves the sample intact. This is essential because there might only be a few specimens. There has been a gap in dietary reconstructions using non-destructive methods and especially pXRF. This method is portable, cheaper, and as accurate as destructive methods and should therefore be implemented more …

Hairy Ainu And Lost Aryans: Differing Perceptions Of The Ainu As Shown By The Osaka And Louisiana Purchase Expositions, David Janson

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

My research project will be examining the Ainu exhibits at the 1903 Fifth National Industrial Exposition of Osaka and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition of St. Louis. These two expositions, the first sponsored by the Empire of Japan and the second sponsored by American Anthropologists, featured live members of the aforementioned Hokkaido group, the presentations of whom allow for us to view the perceptions of the Ainu by the Japanese who were in the process of colonizing them and the more traditional colonizers in the West. With this view in hand, this project seeks to examine the ways in which …

Beyond 106: Descendant-Centered Collaboration To Interpret Dakota Archaeological Sites At Macalester's Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area (Konhsa), Abigail R. Thomsen

Anthropology Honors Projects

This thesis addresses the absence of frameworks for collaborative interpreting Indigenous archaeological sites. I discuss my experience of descendant-centered collaboration with representatives from Dakota communities to create two interpretive signs for Macalester’s Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area (KONHSA). I worked with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers from Upper Sioux Community, Lower Sioux Indian Community, and Prairie Island Indian Community to determine sign content and design. In this work, I examine the history of the land currently called KONHSA from an archaeological perspective. Then, I discuss the history of archaeology and Cultural Resource Management (CRM) as an oppressive practice, and I …

Non-Traditional Church Involvement As A Life-Course Turning Point: Qualitative Interviews With Religious Offenders, William Hunter Holt Apr 2020

Non-Traditional Church Involvement As A Life-Course Turning Point: Qualitative Interviews With Religious Offenders, William Hunter Holt

Dissertations

This research project conducted and then analyzed qualitative interviews from former and current addicts and criminal offenders who are voluntarily participating in the Christian faith at the same non-traditional, Protestant church. An abridged case study of this church is also provided for background and context. Life-course theory and grounded theory are utilized.

Both the offenders and this church were chosen in an attempt to better understand how the offenders’ involvement at this house of worship, along with their faith in general, have impacted them. Obtaining the perspectives of the offender is essential for three reasons. First, qualitative research conducted in …

Transcending Diversity: Redefining Critical Pedagogies To Enable Students As Creators Of Knowledge, Hareem Khan

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

While adhering to the course learning objectives, the final project for my Ethnic Studies 100: Race and Ethnicity in America course has transformed into an opportunity for students to grapple with the pandemic through the critical lens they build on this quarter. It asks them to center their myriad experiences as CSUSB students and use them as guides to engage with their choice of an academic text from the course. Ethnic Studies, a discipline that emerged out of political movements that addressed systemic racism at the level of higher education, requires us to transcend the banking models of education that …

Time And The Bibliographer: A Meditation On The Spirit Of Book Studies, Matt Cohen Apr 2020

Time And The Bibliographer: A Meditation On The Spirit Of Book Studies, Matt Cohen

Department of English: Faculty Publications

In light of the global return of tribalism, racism, nationalism, and religious hypocrisy to power’s center stage, it is worth returning to the question of the relevance of bibliography. It is a time when, at least at the seats of power in the United States and some other places, books seem to have become almost meaningless. Bibliographic pioneer D.F. McKenzie’s strategy was not to constrain bibliography in self-defense, but to expand it, to go on the offense. What is our course? This essay explores bibliography’s past in order to suggest ways in which it can gain from an engagement with …
