The Eastern Europe Britain Wanted: Serbian Independence As Recorded In British Newspapers, 1867, Sarah H. Eyer Apr 2020

The Eastern Europe Britain Wanted: Serbian Independence As Recorded In British Newspapers, 1867, Sarah H. Eyer

Honors Theses

This is a study of Victorian British foreign policy reflected in newspapers. The study focuses on data obtained from the British response to Serbian independence in 1867. The Conservatives focused on ways to keep the balance of power in Europe. The Liberals were guided by their belief in progress and debated amongst themselves if the Balkan countries were ready to be independent nations. However, neither group knew much about Serbia or what was happening there. The newspapers reflected that Britain had little interest in what Serbia wanted but rather reflected what Britain wanted Europe to look like and how Serbia …

“When You’Re Done … You’Re Still Part Of Our Family”: An Exploration Of Gendered Scripts And Relationships In Prison Reentry Programs, Ruth Schultz Apr 2020

“When You’Re Done … You’Re Still Part Of Our Family”: An Exploration Of Gendered Scripts And Relationships In Prison Reentry Programs, Ruth Schultz

Honors Theses

Historically, the criminal justice system has been primarily composed of men; this lack of diversity led services to see offenders as an almost genderless category. The demographics of the criminal justice system has greatly changed, however. In 1990 there were 43,845 women under the jurisdiction of state and correctional authorities in the US (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1995). As mass incarceration took hold in the United States, this population more than doubled; by 2017 the number of incarcerated women grew to 111, 360 (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2019). Mass incarceration has led to an increase in rehabilitative programs and as …

“You Don’T Understand… It’S Not About Virginity”: Sexual Markets, Identity Construction, And Violent Masculinity On An Incel Forum Board, Joshua A. Segalewitz

Honors Theses

The “manosphere” is an online collection of antifeminists and men’s rights activists. Incels, short for involuntary celibates, interact in this space and have been labeled as extreme misogynists, white supremacists, and domestic terrorists. I engage with popular sociological theories of masculinity (including hegemonic, hybrid, and inclusive masculinities) to analyze dominant discourses on the website incels.is. The data for this project are comments from 100 threads randomly sampled from 4,532 total threads posted in 2018. Using a grounded theory approach, I first explore how incels think about sexuality as an economy, devising a scheme that places everyone in a sexual hierarchy …

Composting Project: Practical Applications And Social Implications, April 25, 2020, Shepard Campbell Apr 2020

Composting Project: Practical Applications And Social Implications, April 25, 2020, Shepard Campbell

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

I will be researching the practical application of creating and implementing composting into different production processes. I will be working with Justin Welch to understand the composting business that he has successfully begun. Additionally, I will be furthering my understanding by looking into how his business makes their compost and what are the best “cocktails” of micro-organisms to make different kinds of compost for different kinds of production systems. My goal through this research is to understand how compost is created, implemented and can be profitable for a business. This will allow me to be able to create educational materials …

Is Restorative Justice Possible In The United States?, Alexandra Myers Apr 2020

Is Restorative Justice Possible In The United States?, Alexandra Myers

Academic Festival

America is regarded as a guide for many aspects of society. One major area that we, as a country, have failed at is our prison system. Not only does America bear the title of having the highest incarceration rate in the world, but we also have a recidivism rate that demonstrates the ineffectiveness of our system. Recidivism refers to the reincarceration of a criminal. Our current ideology surrounding the purpose of prison is to punish someone for an act they have committed against society and themselves. Other countries have a vastly different philosophy regarding the purpose of prison, more commonly …

The Triumph Of Love: Interpretations Of The Tarot In Charles Williams' The Greater Trumps, Nancy-Lou Patterson Apr 2020

The Triumph Of Love: Interpretations Of The Tarot In Charles Williams' The Greater Trumps, Nancy-Lou Patterson

Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings

Extended study of Tarot imagery in Williams’ The Greater Trumps, with examination of Eliot’s possible influence on Williams through his earlier use of Tarot symbolism in The Waste Land. A substantial portion traces the history of Tarot and the evolution of its symbolism through several important decks, then looks at Williams’s interpretation in his novel. Also examines the Roman triumph ceremony and the figure of the Fool for their surprisingly rich interconnections with the Tarot and The Greater Trumps.

Re-Interpreting A Complex Maya Burial At Tutu Uitz Na, Justine Marie Bye Apr 2020

Re-Interpreting A Complex Maya Burial At Tutu Uitz Na, Justine Marie Bye

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In 2017, John Walden led an excavation of the Tutu Uitz Na intermediate elite center, found in the Maya site of Lower Dover, Belize. He and his team uncovered two burials, designated SG1-BU2 and SG1-BU3. Their initial report claims that there were three individuals, all sacrificially bound and killed within an eastern triadic shrine. In 2019, Dr. Kirsten Green-Mink and Justine Bye, both of the University of Montana, re-analyzed the Tutu Uitz Na burials and performed a comprehensive bioarchaeological analysis. SG1-BU2 was found to contain three individuals – 2 adults and 1 subadult. SG1-BU3 contained one adult, likely of high …

Examining The Evolution Of Interaction Between Researchers And Indigenous Populations: An Investigation Of Archaeologists And The Maya, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel Apr 2020

Examining The Evolution Of Interaction Between Researchers And Indigenous Populations: An Investigation Of Archaeologists And The Maya, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

Interactions with Indigenous populations around the world have been, and continue to be, riddled with the remnants of colonialist and imperialist ideals. This can be especially true when considering archaeologists and the modern ancestors of the groups of people they study. There has more recently been a push for more ethical fieldwork methodologies, though they are still not the common practice for archaeological fieldwork. By using more collaborative research methodologies, it is possible to push for change and create a more mutually beneficial research environment. Through the examination of the evolution of interactions with the Maya population living in Guatemala …

La Llorona In Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections On Writing And Memory, Sutherland Jaramillo Apr 2020

La Llorona In Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections On Writing And Memory, Sutherland Jaramillo

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This paper focuses on poetic narratives that consider the folklore figure of La Llorona. I argue that contemporary nuevomexicana poets are responding to regional narratives as a way of challenging traditional structures of the lore and female archetypes to reclaim the identity and voice of the figure of La Llorona. Through literature that considers structure and archetype of the lore, Chicana feminist theory, and spectral theory, this essay surveys a selection of poems: “La Llorona Speaks” (2018) by Mercedez Holtry, “Una Carta de Amor de la Llorona” (2011) by Jessica Helen Lopez and “La Llorona” (2018) by Joanna Vidaurre-Trujillo. Through …

Far From Home: Consumption And Personalization In College Dorms, Mattin Avalon, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel Apr 2020

Far From Home: Consumption And Personalization In College Dorms, Mattin Avalon, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

For many traditional college students, their campus is the first “home” they will ever choose for themselves. Their dormitories or residence halls are the first spaces they will ever personalize as young adults. This paper examines those personalization processes, and the resulting navigations of institutional control, identity, and reconceptualization of home within the college student population. Data were collected through eight interviews and dormitory tours conducted with full-time campus residents at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The resulting analyses examined the systematic process of personalizing a dorm room, and how that process is affected by the institution and …
