How Misinformation And Mistrust Compound The Threat Of Epidemics, William Boyd
How Misinformation And Mistrust Compound The Threat Of Epidemics, William Boyd
Honors Theses
This thesis was conducted to study the effects of misinformation and medical mistrust on the public health field. I use the events of the Chapare Virus outbreak in Bolivia in the summer of 2019 and the public dialogue during that time period to discuss these themes. I used data from market survey's in La Paz, newspaper articles from Página Siete, and Tweets from the time period of the outbreak. My findings suggest that misinformation and medical mistrust affected public health measures, which has major implications for the way the public health field should address future public health events.

Sounding The Nile: River Politics, Environment And Nubian Musical Expression, Regan L. Homeyer
Music ETDs
ABSTRACT
In the mid 1960s, almost 100,000 Egyptian Nubians, people Indigenous to the Nile River Valley, were removed from their ancestral homeland due to the creation of the Aswan High Dam. In the years surrounding their displacement, Nubian musicians in Cairo and villages in new settlement areas gathered traditional Nubian songs and composed new songs to form a distinctive Nubian musical repertoire. This thesis addresses contemporary Nubian musical performance and the role of these reclaimed and newly-written songs in maintaining and revitalizing not only Nubian languages and culture, but especially senses of self in relation to place and, above all, …

Health Care Access For Children In Latinx Immigrant Families In The Greater Philadelphia Area, Sophia King
Politics Honors Papers
This work examines the gap that exists in access to health care in the Greater Philadelphia Region for children of Latinx immigrant families in comparison to other children in the nation. It provides a critical analysis of the gap in access to coverage, noting that this exists despite wide support for a human right to health. This study draws on existing scholarly research as well as interviews with staff at two health clinics and one community outreach center that are located in Greater Philadelphia. It demonstrates that Latinx immigrant families are less likely to have health insurance and get primary …

Considerations Of The Ethical Guidelines For Touch In Dance/Movement Therapy, Natalie Sagartz
Considerations Of The Ethical Guidelines For Touch In Dance/Movement Therapy, Natalie Sagartz
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) took strides by including the subject of touch in its most recent edition of ethical guidelines. This literature review evaluates the themes provided by the ADTA’s code of ethics, drawing on the wealth of information from psychotherapy-adjacent fields including cultural anthropology, social psychology, nursing, and neuroscience. The goal of this literature review is to consider the practical and ethical implications of touch in therapy and encourage dialog on the topic. It is every therapist’s ethical duty to self-reflect on personal views or biases around touch. The following review provides a starting point for such …

The Ideology And Praxis Of Political Moderates:More Liberal Than Conservative?A Research Note, Alec Kwo
The Ideology And Praxis Of Political Moderates:More Liberal Than Conservative?A Research Note, Alec Kwo
Silicon Valley Notebook
Who is a political moderate in the United States today? What are their stances on important national issues and who do they think should be the agents affecting structural change? In what is commonly perceived to be a polarized political climate in the United States, the middle ground often seems non-existent. However, if the United States is as polarized between right and left as some scholars say, then why do so many Americans self-identify as moderate and why do studies tend to neglect a prominently existing ideological group? In the 2014 Chicago Council Survey on American Public Opinion (n = …

Demonology According To The Universal Church Of The Kingdom Of God Three Important Aspects And A Lutheran Response, George Felten
Demonology According To The Universal Church Of The Kingdom Of God Three Important Aspects And A Lutheran Response, George Felten
Master of Art Theology Thesis
Felten, George, C. “Demonology According to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God: Three Important Aspects and a Lutheran Response.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2020. 145pp.
Demonology should not be the center of a church’s theological center or modus operandi, but it should not be denied or avoided either. While the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD), a prominent neo-Pentecostal Brazilian church, makes too much of demonology, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB) seems to make too little of it. Yet this need not be the case. This thesis will analyze three aspects of IURD’s demonology, …
Ritualized Performance And Community Identity: A Historical Examination Of Drum Corps Competition In The United States, Denise Odello
Ritualized Performance And Community Identity: A Historical Examination Of Drum Corps Competition In The United States, Denise Odello
Music Publications
What structures bind musical communities that reach over distances? This article examines the musical community of youth drum corps in the United States and, in particular, the changing performance practices at competitions over time and how those changes influence the identity of the community. Drum corps is a community that exists over increasingly greater distances, yet the identity of this musical community is strong. An important site for discovering this communal identity is in competitive performance. Drum corps performances are strictly regulated because of this competitive context, and the values seen in those competitive regulations reflect the identity of the …
A Highland Textile Tradition From The Far South Of Peru During The Period Of Inka Domination, Penelope Dransart
A Highland Textile Tradition From The Far South Of Peru During The Period Of Inka Domination, Penelope Dransart
PreColumbian Textile Conference VIII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VIII (2019)
A group of garments and textile fragments is identified in this article as belonging to a particular textile tradition, with characteristics indicating an affiliation to communities in the highlands of the South-Central Andes. Different categories of gender-specific garments are presented. The characteristics include an all-camelid construction, warp-patterned stripes in blocks of alternating colours, the use of a discontinuous warp and transposed-warp weave. Pattern motifs include eight-pointed stars, double-headed serpents and figures based on rhombuses. Distinctive geometric designs are analysed, including ‘butterfly’ motifs and narrow stripes, consisting of paired light- and dark-coloured right-angled triangles joined to make stacks of larger isosceles …

Ati, The Indigenous People Of Panay: Their Journey, Ancestral Birthright And Loss, Annielille Gavino
Dance MFA Student Scholarship
This research investigates the Ati people, the indigenous people of Panay Island, Philippines— their origins, current economic status, ancestral rights, development issues, and challenges. This particular inquiry draws attention to the history of the Ati people ( also known as Aetas, Aytas, Agtas, Batak, Mamanwa ) as the first settlers of the islands. In contrast to this, a festive reenactment portraying Ati people dancing in the tourism sponsored Dinagyang and Ati-Atihan festival will be explored. This paper aims to compare the displacement of the Ati as marginalized minorities in contrast to how they are celebrated and portrayed in the dance …

Nature And The Spirit: Tri Hita Karana, Sacred Artistic Practices, And Musical Ecology In Bali, Hao Huang, Joti Rockwell
EnviroLab Asia
Bali is notable for the degree to which music, dance, and visual art permeate everyday life--a result of historically rooted and continuously evolving religious philosophies and rituals. With this context in mind, we wondered what role the arts play, and can play, in addressing environmental concerns.
Discovering The Role Of Desire In Ignatian Spirituality For Discernment Of Vocation In The Jesuit Candidate House Of Vietnam, Pham Dinh Cu
Discovering The Role Of Desire In Ignatian Spirituality For Discernment Of Vocation In The Jesuit Candidate House Of Vietnam, Pham Dinh Cu
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Many candidates in the Jesuit Candidate House of Vietnam have shared that their vocation began with desires. We do not judge whether they are good or bad desires, but we can sure that those desires were influenced by various factors: culture, society, traditions, family background, and so on. This study is the discovering that in Ignatian spirituality, desire can direct people to God, giving them a foundation and criterion for discerning their vocation. Desire can also transform their spiritual life.
First, it presents an overview of the Vietnamese context, including the Catholic Church, religious vocations, and Jesuit vocations and presents …
The Contribution Of The Catholic Church To Post-Civil War Conflict Resolution In Chad, Rimasbé Dionbo Jean Claude
The Contribution Of The Catholic Church To Post-Civil War Conflict Resolution In Chad, Rimasbé Dionbo Jean Claude
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
I argue that if Chadian society continues to feel the effects of the 1979 civil war, then it is because solutions or an adequate method of approaching the conflict have not been applied. On the one hand, there is a lack of clear political will in the management of the battle, and on the other hand, civil society, including the Church, has not been sufficiently involved in the process of conflict resolution. For there to be social harmony, the Chadian people need a consequent reconciliation. Because of the influential presence of the Catholic Church in Chadian society, we consider it …

Re-Imagining An African Family Ecclesiology In Dialogue With Ratzinger’S Christo-Pneuma Communion Ecclesiology, Tegha Afuhwi Nji
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This thesis seeks to elaborate an African ecclesiology that brings into conversation African notions of family and Ratzinger’s theological reflection on koinōnia. The model of Church-as-family was popularized by the 1994 Synod of African Bishops, and since then it has been espoused by numerous African theologians, who view it as the African response to the communion ecclesiology elaborated by the Second Vatican Council.
This thesis, however, seeks to present a unique perspective of Church-as-family. In the first place, while the prevalent African family ecclesiologies tend to present the aspect of communion or fellowship in ways that undermine the institutional …

Towards A Pastoral, Apologetic Approach To La Santa Muerte Devotion, Henrry Christopher Mendez Fajardo
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Death is and will continue to be a most intriguing reflection topic. It is interesting to note how the topic of death extends its reach to different areas of study which range from the most biological and material to the most philosophical and spiritual. Undoubtedly, death does not cease to be an event rooted in all aspects of our material reality, since life only makes sense in relation to death.
In recent decades in some Latin American contexts, devotion to the personification of death has increased significantly. In a special way, this devotion has gained greater strength and relevance in …

Latin American Biblical Hermeneutics & Popular And Community Reading Of The Bible: Some Inputs From Race And Ethnicity Criticism Within The Hellenistic And Jewish Culture Of The First Century, Diego Salazar Galvis
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
After the Second Vatican Council, scholars have used new lenses to approach the Bible as a way to respond to the cultural and socio-political realities of multiple and diverse contexts. Based on my background and Latino essence, I advocate for biblical reading and interpretation that comes from a Latin American setting, in which popular education and liberation theology come together in most of the communities. In this research, I will present a form of mutual collaboration between race-ethnicity biblical criticism and the Popular & Community Reading of the Bible (PCRB) perspective.
So far, biblical scholarship has not yet integrated elements …

“Ton Sexe Tellement Blanc, Tellement Grand”: Le Colonialisme, L’Orientalisme Et La Sexualité Dans Celui Qui Est Digne D’Être Aimé D’Abdellah Taïa, Rebecca Lynn Garbe
French: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This paper seeks to explore the lasting effects of French Colonialism and Orientalism in the Maghreb through the lens of Abdellah Taïa’s novel Celui qui est digne d’être aimé. In this analysis, I focus on the chapter “Juillet 2005,” in which the protagonist, Ahmed—a young, gay Moroccan man—describes his thirteen-year sexual/romantic relationship with a French man, Emmanuel, and comes to recognize that, within this relationship, he lacks true agency and is still a colonized body. I argue that the effects of Colonialism and Orientalism are made visible through exchanges of power within the images, dialogue, and narration presented in Ahmed …
Embracing Écriture Inclusive Students Respond To Gender Inclusivity In The French Language Classroom, Rebecca Lynn Garbe
Embracing Écriture Inclusive Students Respond To Gender Inclusivity In The French Language Classroom, Rebecca Lynn Garbe
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
In 2017, the French Academy published a declaration opposing the official integration of écriture inclusive into the French language for fear that it would put it in “péril mortel.” Specifically, the Academy targeted a newly proposed punctuation, le point milieu, or the middot, that would allow those writing in French to express both the masculine and feminine endings of words with a dot between the two. This addition would disrupt traditional gendered interpretations within the language and make space, not only for the goals of French feminists, but also for visibility of non-binary French-speaking people. The Academy argued, however, …

As late as the early 1990s, the only comprehensive book on Missouri’s birds was Otto Widmann’s Preliminary Catalog of the Birds of Missouri, published in 1907. Widmann documented the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, which has just one habitat in the United States—in St. Louis.
A Quasi-Experimental Study Of Socio-Economic Effects Of Social Enterprise Vocational And Education Training Programs In Myanmar, Trisha Bailey
A Quasi-Experimental Study Of Socio-Economic Effects Of Social Enterprise Vocational And Education Training Programs In Myanmar, Trisha Bailey
Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations
Sustainable economic development is a challenge in bottom of pyramid (BOP) communities, such as those in Myanmar, where people live in subsistence conditions. Contributing factors are the lack of vocational training and education available for BOP community members. The UN and the OECD are rallying the organizations around the world, including social enterprises, to address the challenge of increasing sustainable economic development. Social enterprises are businesses that address social and environmental challenges while creating economic profit. Some social enterprises offer vocational and education training (VET) in the BOP communities in which they operate. The problem addressed by this study is …

A Fearful Warning: J.B. Metz’S Memoria Passionis In Response To Western Culture’S Discomfort With Dying, Death And Grief, David R. Ford
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This study examines Johannes Baptist Metz’s theological focus of the “awakening of memory,” and specifically the connection of such awakening to the memoria passionis, mortis et resurrectionis Jesu Christi, as well as the opening to a new narrative, leading to a freedom for praxis and mission and finally, leading to transformation. This awakening can be a path that confronts the dysfunction of a death denying and avoidant culture, as well as one that challenges us to confront suffering of so many kinds, especially that of the poor and marginalized. Such a theological focus, in fact, has the potential to …
