The Red Swimsuit: Essays, Jacqueline Knirnschild
The Red Swimsuit: Essays, Jacqueline Knirnschild
Honors Theses
This thesis is a collection of creative non-fiction essays that offers a collage of ethnography, reportage and memoir. The Red Swimsuit blurs the lines between what is considered social science, journalism and art. These essays will become part of a book- length work of creative non-fiction that will explore what it’s like to grow up as a woman in a globalized world wrought with social media, hookup culture and cross-cultural interactions. The Red Swimsuit provides first-hand experience, reflexive narration, and reflection on life as a member of Generation Z, also known as iGen.

The Island Earth Field Studio: A High School Summer Program On Polynesian Voyaging In Hawaii, Andrea M. Bachmann
The Island Earth Field Studio: A High School Summer Program On Polynesian Voyaging In Hawaii, Andrea M. Bachmann
Capstone Collection
The Island Earth Field Studio is a ten-day program for high school students to learn about Polynesian voyaging in Hawaii as a framework to understand non-Western knowledge systems. The program design is grounded in research on the historical significance of voyaging and informed by current literature on adolescent development and place-based pedagogy.
To further refine the program, a needs assessment was conducted using a combination of surveys and interviews with parents and educators in the continental United States (mainland) as well as interviews with local partners in Hawaii. The assessment revealed that cultural learning and community building were viewed by …
A Rhetoric And Philosophy Of Gifts, Mary Eberhardinger
A Rhetoric And Philosophy Of Gifts, Mary Eberhardinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project synthesizes a selected scope of rhetorical and philosophical perspectives of the gift. The research question is what the relationship between gifts and rhetoric might be. In order to approach this question, this project offers a review of related literature on the topic of gifts. It then provides analysis and discussion that contextualize the question. The project finally concludes by offering implications. The implications address why the question concerning the relationship between gifts and rhetoric matters for the larger landscape of international relations.
British Eugenics Failure And Success, Angela Gallagher
British Eugenics Failure And Success, Angela Gallagher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The historical narrative of eugenics often focuses on those eugenic societies and movements that ‘succeeded’ in part or in full in achieving a eugenic society. Less studied are those societies that failed, whether due to social backlash or internal incoherence. The British Eugenic Educational Society as the foundational point of eugenics, has therefore been overlooked as a result of it’s perceived lack of contribution to eugenic thought and its failure to pass eugenic legislation. Founded by Francis Galton, the originator of the philosophy of eugenics, the British Eugenic Educational Society should have been successful given it’s reputation and the numerous …
Visualizing Authenticity: Combining Traditional And “Big Data” Techniques To Map Visitor Perceptions Of Authenticity In Portland, Maine, Colleen Metcalf
Visualizing Authenticity: Combining Traditional And “Big Data” Techniques To Map Visitor Perceptions Of Authenticity In Portland, Maine, Colleen Metcalf
Thinking Matters Symposium
Tourism is Maine’s largest industry; A University of Maine study in October 2019 shows that 1 out of 10 jobs are in Maine’s hospitality sector. Growing and protecting this industry is of vital importance to various stakeholders across the state. Data about how and where our visitors spend their time can inform this process. Traditional data collection methods can be costly and time consuming. This study incorporates new data collection techniques, utilizing new “big data” sources. Flickr.com is a public photo sharing website. The metadata from geotagged photos obtained from its API contain a record of unique experiences. The spatial …
Interdisciplinary Environmental Approaches To The Evolution Of Late Pleistocene And Holocene Periods In The Western Gulf Of Maine, David Spidaliere
Interdisciplinary Environmental Approaches To The Evolution Of Late Pleistocene And Holocene Periods In The Western Gulf Of Maine, David Spidaliere
Thinking Matters Symposium
With growing concerns around climate change and sea-level rise, tracking these changes and pinpointing environmental trends are of the upmost importance. In the Gulf of Maine, sea-level rise and warming waters will have a major impact on the fishing and agricultural industries that are so vital to the region. In order to help prepare for these environmental transformations, I have been looking to the past. The landscape of the Gulf of Maine region has evolved significantly since the late Pleistocene. Sea-level variations, habitat and species changes, and human use and modification of the landscape have had a large impact on …
Dawnland Archaeology: Cultural Heritage, Public Awareness, And Tourism In The State Of Maine, Julia A. Gustafson
Dawnland Archaeology: Cultural Heritage, Public Awareness, And Tourism In The State Of Maine, Julia A. Gustafson
Thinking Matters Symposium
In 2020, Maine celebrates the bicentennial of its statehood. While our ‘Vacationland’ is well known for its beautiful lakes, sandy beaches, and abundance of lobster, it is generally not a place that people visit with archaeology in mind. The ultimate goal of this project is to change that. Maine has an incredible history of human occupation that dates back to 12,000 years or 400 human generations. It is the home of the enigmatic Norse penny, the 17th century Cod fishing station at Smuttynose, the mysterious Red Paint People, the failed colony of Popham that predates Jamestown, and has more than …

Biracial students make up a substantial allocation of the school population, and their demographics are only expected to increase within the coming years. With this emergence of a larger Biracial community, schools need to consider how they will implement equitable resources and practices to meet the needs for this unique population. School librarians, serving as instructional leaders, can provide the necessary materials and strategies to support their students who are Biracial in order to foster positive racial identity. The purpose of this study is to explore school librarians’ perspectives on the influence of multicultural literature on students’ acceptance and understanding …

Female Leaders Navigate The Arts, Post 'Me Too', Peyton Kennedy
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
As the lights dim and the curtain rises on a theatrical production, there are roles to fill onstage and off. Perhaps the most important roles in modern theatre are those of leadership. Leaders in the arts have the power to influence company communication, shape the culture of the rehearsal room and navigate through a crisis. However, leadership and power can be manipulated, as the world witnessed through the ‘me too’ movement. As allegations rose against prominent leaders, the push for change strengthened. We are now three years past Hollywood’s ignition of the ‘me too’ movement, which prompts the question: have …
Feminism And Low Breastfeeding Rates In France, Megan Wadsworth
Feminism And Low Breastfeeding Rates In France, Megan Wadsworth
Honors Theses
Breastfeeding rates in France are among the lowest in high-income countries, indicating that French mothers do not breastfeed for nearly as long as is recommended by healthcare professionals and international health organizations. French government, society and conflicting feminist perspectives all influence the likelihood that mothers will breastfeed. The French government has regulations in place to protect women’s right to breastfeed in public and in the workplace, but it is unclear if these are truly beneficial for French women. French society is a seemingly inhospitable environment in which mothers do not feel safe and secure to breastfeed publicly. Motherhood and feminism …
‘How Has Art Refocused Consumers’ Attention Within A Visual World Through The Exploration Of Package Design?’, Frances Hackney
‘How Has Art Refocused Consumers’ Attention Within A Visual World Through The Exploration Of Package Design?’, Frances Hackney
Honors Theses
The art of design has refocused the attention of consumers as they have entered into a visually demanding world. While this concept is complex and perplexing, stemming from endless influencing factors, the elements of design can be broken down into areas of focus to dissect the visual world of marketing. A simple way to communicate the influence of design on the consumers is to unveil the answers through the study of art.
In this thesis, the study will turn to the world of art to learn more about consumerism. The goal is to understand how visual images and the ongoing …
American Indian Sovereignty And Climate Change: Emerging Spaces And Coalitions To Assert American Indian Sovereignty During A Climate Crisis, Brenna Q. Gardner
American Indian Sovereignty And Climate Change: Emerging Spaces And Coalitions To Assert American Indian Sovereignty During A Climate Crisis, Brenna Q. Gardner
Honors Theses
Climate change is a global issue that will affect most, if not all, populations on earth; however, it will not affect groups equally. While vulnerability varies between groups, poor, frontline, marginalized, and Indigenous people are particularly vulnerable. This thesis explores if the challenge of climate change as affecting multiple vulnerable populations presents emerging spaces in which American Indian sovereignty can be asserted. I provide a literature review on federal Indian policy and the American Indian Sovereignty movement in the 1960’s and 1970’s. I then analyze primary materials produced by the Indigenous Environmental Network and primary material surrounding the #NoDAPL movement. …

Repatriation: The Convergence Of Cultural Heritage And Technology, Megan E. Goldsworthy
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
This thesis aims to explore how the use of developing technologies in the field of cultural heritage preservation can be applied to the debates of the repatriation of antiquities. By acknowledging the complex and often multifaceted factors that underscore arguments for or against the repatriation of antiquities housed in Europe’s most prestigious museums, we can uncover how technology can be applied to help resolve the underlying concerns. Exact modeling, laser scanning, and virtual reality projects are being developed in the museum and cultural heritage fields to be used for specific projects. These growing technologies can be adapted and applied to …
Analyzing The Onset And Resolution Of Nonstate Conflict In The Middle East & North Africa, Emily A. Barbaro
Analyzing The Onset And Resolution Of Nonstate Conflict In The Middle East & North Africa, Emily A. Barbaro
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
By applying structural-functionalist theories of deviance and opposition, this thesis deconstructs nonstate mobilization in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Using data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset, the quantitative analysis interpreted both group and leader behavior in conflict situations to determine factors that influenced conflict onset and resolution. The quasipoisson regression analysis of group behavior suggested that polity and state capacity were both significant predictors of violent and nonviolent mobilization. The negative binomial regression of regime behavior suggested that civilian casualties were the most significant predictor of a government response to nonstate mobilization. Ultimately, the …
"Army, I'M Home!": Digital Community And Mediated Intimacy In K-Pop Fandom, Olivia George
"Army, I'M Home!": Digital Community And Mediated Intimacy In K-Pop Fandom, Olivia George
Honors Theses
In this paper, I argue that we should turn our attention to the affective labor in the pop culture industry in South Korea. Using the House of BTS event as a case study of K- Pop fandom, I will address the affective labor practices and its impacts in K-Pop fandom. Idol group BTS (방탄소년단) and their company Big Hit Entertainment are a particularly apt study for this choice because they deliberately adopt mediated intimacy as a marketing tactic, creating content outside of music and across social networking platforms that cater to fans’ desire to “know” and adore BTS members. In …

(Re)Canonizing The Tool: Constructions And Insincerity In The Digital Age, Danielle Romagno
Masters Theses, 2020-current
This thesis conceptually frames and accompanies the MFA body of work (Re)Canonizing the Tool: Constructions and Insincerity in the Digital Age done by Danielle Romagno. Using lenses of relationship between humans and tools, a desire to problematize our world, absurdity, and reimagined function, this document explores the work’s connection to the contemporary superficiality of online media like infomercials and YouTube DIY tutorials.
Social Exclusion Of Older Mossi Women Accused Of Witchcraft In Burkina Faso, West Africa, Clarisse Barbier
Social Exclusion Of Older Mossi Women Accused Of Witchcraft In Burkina Faso, West Africa, Clarisse Barbier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Among the most marginalized populations in the world, one group of women has been persistently ignored, silenced, and forgotten. In Burkina Faso, West Africa, older women in rural villages are often the target of witchcraft accusations; the consequences of these accusations are alarming because these women undergo violent attacks, face exclusion from their villages, and become the most vulnerable and marginalized segment of the Burkinabe population. Between August 2017 and November 2018, I conducted an ethnographic study of Burkinabe women accused of witchcraft living in two shelters in the capital city of Ouagadougou and examined women’s experiences of accusation, trauma, …

Apparatgeist And Mobile Communication: Considering Interpersonal Communication Practices, Lisa Enright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mobile communication is embedded into our daily life increasing our connection to social networks. The development of mobile communication occurred during the second half of the twentieth century and has become domesticated into everyday life. One consequence of the widespread adoption of mobile communication device use is an increase in connectivity. This increase in connection has led to a shift in interpersonal relationships. People now must be aware of when to connect and disconnect to develop meaningful relationships in private, public, and social realms. This project seeks an understanding of how the consequence of increased connectivity and the development of …
