A Framework For Teachers In Education For Sustainable Development For Upper Elementary Grades In The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Allison Wylde May 2020

A Framework For Teachers In Education For Sustainable Development For Upper Elementary Grades In The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Allison Wylde

Education

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a holistic approach to education that seeks to create a better world for this generation and the next. The aim of ESD is for students to gain knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will shape the planet for a sustainable future. The United Nations has adopted 17 Global Goals as a "universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030” (United Nations Development Program, 2020, para. 1). Models for sustainability look very different depending on where one lives. The context of this …

This paper explores a project using Community Music Therapy with a group of self-selected middle school students in addressing concerns and emotions around equity, diversity, and inclusion. The results of this project demonstrated that Community Music Therapy is an …

A Study Of Variation Among Side-Notched Bifaces From Northern Archaic Sites In Alaska, Kaitlyn N. Fuqua May 2020

A Study Of Variation Among Side-Notched Bifaces From Northern Archaic Sites In Alaska, Kaitlyn N. Fuqua

Anthropology

An Alaskan archaeological tradition, the Northern Archaic, (~6,000-1,000 cal years BP) is often identified based on the presence of side-notched bifaces. Variation among these bifaces, commonly referred to as projectile points, is not well understood. This study examines morphological and functional variability among a sample of 209 notched bifaces from 63 Northern Archaic sites located in central and northern Alaska. The nature and extent of variability were examined on several scales, including: 1) across ecological regions of Alaska, 2) throughout the mid-Holocene (6,000-1,000 cal years BP), and 3) within a single site (the Ratekin site, HEA-187). Morphological variation was examined …

Stakeholder Needs And Information Use In Cryospheric Hazard Planning And Response: Case Studies From Alaska, Dina Abdel-Fattah May 2020

Stakeholder Needs And Information Use In Cryospheric Hazard Planning And Response: Case Studies From Alaska, Dina Abdel-Fattah

Natural Resources

The global cryosphere is experiencing rapid change, which potentially impacts the severity and magnitude of various cryospheric hazards. Alaska is home to a number of different communities that experience cryospheric hazards. These types of hazards can have potentially devastating impacts on surrounding biodiversity, communities, and infrastructure. However, there is a gap in understanding regarding what are stakeholder information needs for different cryospheric hazards, as well as what are the resources stakeholders use to meet these needs. This dissertation investigated stakeholder use of various information products and resources in three cryospheric hazard-prone communities in Alaska, which experience glacial lake outburst flood …

It's So Good To Be Back: Explorations Of Subsistence In Alaska, James Magdanz May 2020

It's So Good To Be Back: Explorations Of Subsistence In Alaska, James Magdanz

Natural Resources

This dissertation explores some aspects of contemporary hunter-gatherer economies in Alaska, with an emphasis on quantitative approaches. Written in manuscript-style, the focus is on four decades beginning about 1980, which coincided with legal recognition of hunter-gatherer activities as "subsistence," and with expanded subsistence data collection efforts. Subsistence is viewed through four theoretical frames: socio-ecological resilience, political ecology, social networks, and food security. Principles of common-pool resource management are reviewed, as are legal frames unique to Alaska that limited possible approaches to management and resulted in a fragmented management systems. In the body of the dissertation, the first article explores trends …

The Igiugig Community Cultural Center: An Indigenous Plan In Process, Alexanna Salmon May 2020

The Igiugig Community Cultural Center: An Indigenous Plan In Process, Alexanna Salmon

Rural Development

Indigenous planning practices of the Village of Igiugig have long identified the need for a community cultural center. This research project used a community-based participatory approach to explore the type of cultural center that will best serve residents and visitors alike. Through various community meetings, semi-structured interviews of key informants, and surveys of area businesses, Igiugig was able to articulate the main functionality of the center, as well as inform a design process for and by an Indigenous community in rural Alaska. One outcome of this process is a resource guide for the Igiugig Village Council, for the remainder of …

Qikertarmiut Nunat Apertaarait Anirturluki: Preserving The Indigenous Place Names Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dehrich A. Schmidt-Chya May 2020

Qikertarmiut Nunat Apertaarait Anirturluki: Preserving The Indigenous Place Names Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dehrich A. Schmidt-Chya

Rural Development

This project explores Indigenous place names from the Kodiak Archipelago toward the goals of exhibiting Indigenous identity, increasing pride in Indigineity, and to document Indigenous knowledge. Sugpiaq/Alutiiq people have lived on Kodiak Island for at least 7500 years, while the first foreign contact didn’t come until about 260 years ago, in either 1761 or 1763. Within the past 257 years, Qikertarmiut (Kodiak Alutiiq) place names have been in a continuous state of jeopardy due to the linguistic and cultural assimilation of Indigenous people into Western cultures. In order to preserve the place names of the Kodiak Archipelago, I compiled and …

Zooarchaeological Analysis At 49-Rat-32: Historical Ecology And Maritime Subsistence In The Late Aleutian Period, Kevin M. Sippel May 2020

Zooarchaeological Analysis At 49-Rat-32: Historical Ecology And Maritime Subsistence In The Late Aleutian Period, Kevin M. Sippel

Anthropology

This thesis utilizes a zooarchaeological collection from 49-RAT-32 on Amchitka Island in the Western Aleutians to examine Unangax̂ subsistence strategies, and human/environment interactions from 620 ± 20 to 320 ± 20 years B.P. The materials used for this analysis were recovered from primary and secondary fill overlaying the House 1 floor. Paleoecological records within this region are limited and conflict with each other, but the cool and wet conditions of the Little Ice Age 600-100 years B.P, or C.E. 1350-1850 are believed to be in effect during the deposition of the fill materials. Marine mammal, fish, and sea urchin remains …

Human And Ecological Responses To The Northern White River Ash Eruption, Holly A. Smith May 2020

Human And Ecological Responses To The Northern White River Ash Eruption, Holly A. Smith

Anthropology

The White River Ash northern lobe (WRAn) volcanic eruption deposited a blanket of tephra (volcanic ash) along the Yukon-Alaska border ~1625 cal BP (calibrated years before present). Currently, there has been limited investigation into the effect of this natural disaster on the environment and local hunter-gatherer populations. This research seeks to analyze and explore the potential ecological and cultural responses to the WRAn event. To address this question, paired archaeological and palynological studies bracketing the WRAn were conducted. Excavations at the Forty Mile/Ch'ëdä Dëk Territorial Historic Site in the Yukon (LcVn-2) revealed a multicomponent site including cultural deposits dating to …

Alaska's Shrinking Glaciers: Integrated Glaciological Research For Hydrological, Ecological, And Environmental Education Applications, Joanna Young May 2020

Alaska's Shrinking Glaciers: Integrated Glaciological Research For Hydrological, Ecological, And Environmental Education Applications, Joanna Young

Geosciences

As air temperatures in Alaska are rising, glacier melt is accelerating and affecting hydrological resources and downstream ecosystem function. The extent to which glacier loss may change hydrological regimes in coastal climates, and how that may impact nearshore marine conditions, is uncertain. Moreover, from a social-ecological standpoint, many citizens today are disconnected from these types of environmental changes, in part due to isolation from visible climate change impacts. This dissertation addresses the dual need for examining recent Alaska glacier changes and resulting hydrological and marine impacts, and for exploring education strategies that leverage glacier changes for environmental identity development. In …

Science, Perception And Scale: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Environmental Change And Community Adaptive Capaciy, Jesse E. Grunblatt May 2020

Science, Perception And Scale: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Environmental Change And Community Adaptive Capaciy, Jesse E. Grunblatt

Biological Sciences

The discrepancy between science-based assessments of climate change and public acknowledgement of climate change has been extensively documented at a national level. The relationship of science-based assessments and public awareness of environmental change at the local community level is less studied. An understanding of how science-based information informs local perception is important to ensure that science communication effectively supports community decision making. This dissertation explores the gap between science-based assessments and local perception of environmental change within a framework of adaptive capacity. The research is divided into three interrelated studies that provide: 1) an assessment of community perception of local …

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith May 2020

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation is about how agricultural biotechnology was invoked in Argentina to rebuild the state and the economy after the 2001 economic crisis, which I approach by making visible the social lives of those experiencing the unintended consequences of a large-scale agrarian transformation. My starting point is to try to understand the paradoxical way that a leftist political project, Kirchnerismo, relied on and promoted an export driven soy boom as a way to rebuild the state after the 2001 economic crisis. While I do give significant attention to the high level state and industry practices, my goal is to examine …

Healing Through The Photographic Murals Of James "Chip" "Jetsonorama" Thomas, Mandolen Sanchez May 2020

Healing Through The Photographic Murals Of James "Chip" "Jetsonorama" Thomas, Mandolen Sanchez

Art & Art History ETDs

James “Chip” “Jetsonorama” Thomas is an Indian Health Services physician who moved to the Navajo Nation in 1987. Although he is not culturally Native American, Thomas depicts Navajo in large-scale black and white photographic murals. His work has been discussed in online articles and books about street art in terms of their relationship to street art, specifically the art of JR, as well as their role as activist art on the Navajo Nation. There has been a lack of substantial research, though, into the way in which his photographic murals respond to or engage with nineteenth and twentieth-century photographs of …

Lgbtqc: Queer Perspectives On The Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities, Robert Burke May 2020

Lgbtqc: Queer Perspectives On The Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities, Robert Burke

Anthropology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Cities are broadly conceived to be queer utopia when compared with rural spaces. While the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa fit this simplistic model in some ways, the region has several unique characteristics that warrant their own investigation. I argue that the social climate of the Quad Cities is generally perceived as welcoming and inclusive by the LGBTQ+ community. However, despite an assortment of community-building institutions, some find socialization and partner-seeking a bit difficult. Many advocate for investment in a variety of physical LGBTQ+ “third places” (public gathering places), which would yield a variety of benefits for this community. …

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin May 2020

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Ask any Cape Town Muslim “what is Islam?”, and the first words that will come out of their mouths will be, “Islam is a way of life”. Among Muslim sexual minorities, the answer is resoundingly the same. Stating that Islam is a way of life indicates there are prescribed rules and codes of conduct that one must follow in order to be a Muslim. As such, the experience of these prescriptions and expectations are culture specific and context-dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which Muslim sexual minorities living in Cape Town, South Africa experience …

Neoliberalism And Its Socio-Economic Subjugation Of The Working Class As The Cause Of The Yellow Vest Movement In The Hauts-De-France And Grand Est Regions Of France From 1980 To 2019, Paul Scott Novak May 2020

Neoliberalism And Its Socio-Economic Subjugation Of The Working Class As The Cause Of The Yellow Vest Movement In The Hauts-De-France And Grand Est Regions Of France From 1980 To 2019, Paul Scott Novak

Senior Theses

This paper offers an insight into the cause of the Yellow Vest Movement in France. I argue that the Yellow Vest Movement was not simply caused by the Gas Tax passed under the Macron Administration, but by years of subjugation of the working-class under neoliberal ideology stemming from the 1980s and continuing to 2019. The two northern regions of Grand Est and Hauts-de-France known historically for their working-class communities are examined in order to see how neoliberalism has subjugated the working-class over the past forty years. Using the works of Pierre Bourdieu, Édouard Louis, Florence Aubenas, François Ruffin, and my …

"Underage Marriage: The Global Cultural Paradigm", Alexandra Ciociola Murphy May 2020

"Underage Marriage: The Global Cultural Paradigm", Alexandra Ciociola Murphy

Senior Theses

Underage marriage is a union where one or both parties is under the age of 18. Marriage before the age of 18 not only has severe health and developmental consequences for those that fall victim to the practice, but also economic consequences for regions where it is practiced. Many solutions have been proposed to eliminate underage practice, but with minimal results. The writing in this research explores the causes, effects and solutions of underage marriage comparatively between Morocco, Bangladesh, and the United States. Historical context, regional culture, and economic development are taken into consideration and analyzed to draw to the …

"Is It Viable To Have A Fully-Functional Multiethnic State In Modern Society? A Dual Regional Inquiry", Anike Tella-Martins May 2020

"Is It Viable To Have A Fully-Functional Multiethnic State In Modern Society? A Dual Regional Inquiry", Anike Tella-Martins

Senior Theses

Throughout the world, regardless of economic status, there have been multiple complications with the lives and experiences of minorities in multiethnic state populations. Research regarding multiethnic state populations either have a Western focus or contrast non-Western multiethnic cultural formations from Western ones. Neither of these trends fully delve into the heart of this global issue. The inquiry examines whether or not a fully functional multiethnic state can exist in today’s world. By studying two emerging middle powers, Nigeria and Pakistan, it would be an indicator as to whether or not a nation state of this construction is plausible for not …

Mindfulness And Retention: A Potential Solution To The Lack Of Persistence Of Community College Students, Sandra Parsons May 2020

Mindfulness And Retention: A Potential Solution To The Lack Of Persistence Of Community College Students, Sandra Parsons

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Retention of community college students has many obstacles and unknowns. Students leave school and abandon their dreams of a college education for various reasons, such as lack of financial support, family support, and campus support. Efforts to research and develop retention practices and theories have been pursued for more than fifty years. Researchers and higher education institutions believe that incorporating such practices as first-year programs, learning communities, and tutoring will help in their retention efforts. While some of these practices have improved college student persistence, their efficacy has not been demonstrated for all students, specifically for those who attend community …

The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva May 2020

The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The field of anthropology – the study of human culture – has much to contribute to understanding the practice of dance/movement therapy (DMT) from a culturally-informed vantage point. We exist in an epoch of expressive arts therapy where multicultural competency is becoming increasingly emphasized. Yet, culture’s grasp goes beyond its influence on the way people understand their world – it also shapes how people come to understand and make meaning with their bodies. This thesis reviews five categories of literature: 1) the influence of culture on the construction of the embodied “self”; 2) the influence of culture on movement tendencies …

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of Dance/movement therapy (D/MT) with a focus on sensory stimulation among individuals living with dementia to promote a higher level of engagement, connection, and reminiscence. This thesis will provide a literature review on the challenges that individuals living with dementia experience and the importance of a person-centered approach to care that is grounded in relationship (Newman-Bluestein & Chang, 2017). Additionally, the role that Dance/movement therapy plays among people with dementia and the benefits of sensory stimulation within this population are also included. Finally, a Dance/movement therapy intervention that was implemented …

How Dance And Music Stimulate Therapeutic Change In A Personal Movement Ritual, Cassidy Bingham May 2020

How Dance And Music Stimulate Therapeutic Change In A Personal Movement Ritual, Cassidy Bingham

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis investigates the therapeutic effects of the researcher’s own arts practice or personal movement ritual, which is based in her tacit knowledge and intuition. The researcher is also the participant of this study. Her personal movement ritual, which was formalized as the method, was conducted before the literature review in order to prioritize tacit knowledge before introducing the influence of other scholars. In the literature review, Ellen Dissanayake’s and other scholars’ rationale for the emotional and cognitive changes that take place during rituals through music and dance are explained. These rationales, or the five constructs of entrainment, “ …

How Choreometrics Reflects Self-Identity And Self-Concept Through Cultural Dance: A Developing Method, Naowarat Buddee May 2020

How Choreometrics Reflects Self-Identity And Self-Concept Through Cultural Dance: A Developing Method, Naowarat Buddee

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Abstract

This arts-based autoethnography research aims to analyze the researcher’s personal reflections of cultural embodied experiences through the connection of Thai cultural dance movements, cultural patterns, and expressive behaviors in Thai cultural contexts. These also reflected the researcher’s personal-identity and self-concept. As cultural dance has impacts on social structures and human behaviors both physically and psychologically in social interactions throughout the developmental lifespan, the researcher was inspired by the concept of Choreometrics to look closely at personal dance experiences in relation to Thai culture. This autoethnography is a case study of the researcher who identifies as Thai and reflects her …

Ecologically Driven Changes In Subsistence Strategies: An Examination Of Bone Cross-Sectional Geometrical Properties In Hunter-Gatherers From Australia And Early Agriculturists From Belize, Ethan C. Hill

Anthropology ETDs

The primary purpose of this dissertation was to examine how changes to ecological context can urge subsistence level populations to adopt new subsistence strategies. This was accomplished by using metrics of bone strength to infer temporal behavior change in Holocene (10,000 BP – present) skeletal samples from southern Australia and southern Belize. The first paper, An Examination of the Cross-sectional Geometrical Properties of the Long Bone Diaphyses of Holocene Foragers from Roonka, South Australia, was written in collaboration with Osbjorn Pearson, Arthur Durband, Keryn Walshe, Kristian Carlson, and Frederick Grine. We compared long bone data for 69 individuals at Roonka …

An Effective Method Of Teaching English: A Handbook For English Teachers In China, Zichen Cai May 2020

An Effective Method Of Teaching English: A Handbook For English Teachers In China, Zichen Cai

Master's Projects and Capstones

Along with the significance of learning English has been emphasized by Chinese government for more than thirty years, more and more Westerns who mostly came from the U.S and England were welcomed to teach English in China. However, most of them are not qualified to teach, and they are not well-prepared before teaching according to author’s observation, which make students lose their interest in learning English eventually. Moreover, these foreign ESL teachers follow the activities and exercises in the textbook step by step while teaching, which is very dull and monotonous. In the literature review, the factors that might influence …

Into The West And Back Out Again: An Examination Of Cultural And Social Exchange In The Gilded Age United States, Samantha Mcdonald

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to provide a historical analysis of American culture and society at the turn of the twentieth-century, challenging the conceptualization of social isolation, cultural subjectivity, and urban conflict of the rural Midwest. Detailed research utilizes a synthesized mixture of primary sources, contemporary to the Gilded Age, and a volume of scholastic analysis of Midwestern and American history to establish the significance of rural, Midwest communities in the development of social and cultural standards in the United States. A flipped historical focus shifts the rural Midwest from an urban periphery to the center and nexus of …

Retaining The Power To Teach And Advocate In The Era Of "Reform", David Aram Wilson, David Aram Wilson May 2020

Retaining The Power To Teach And Advocate In The Era Of "Reform", David Aram Wilson, David Aram Wilson

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This qualitative, multi-case study investigates veteran, dual-language teachers in urban elementary schools in the Southwest United States and how these teachers manage to continue teaching despite education “reforms” that have contributed to increased attrition among their peers. Each participant contributed qualitative data through a narrative questionnaire, two interviews, two focus groups., and physical artifacts. Coding and analysis of each case was inductive and involved the identification of patterns and themes that emerged from the data. A cross-case analysis was conducted. Modern Critical Theory served as the theoretical lens.

Teachers as advocates for their students’ cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic well-being emerged …

Finding Hope: Student Empowerment In A Segregated School District, Rachel Leigh Russell May 2020

Finding Hope: Student Empowerment In A Segregated School District, Rachel Leigh Russell

Education | Master's Theses

This study seeks to understand how students are self-empowered in a racially and economically diverse school. A literature review revealed a body of peer reviewed research in relation to student empowerment through educational, sociological, and psychological theories. Within the literature review, the need for restructure of teacher/student relationships became apparent across a range of theories and frameworks. Yet, insufficient studies have been conducted to understand student empowerment and identity from a student perspective, or to what extent they are able to empower themselves and what methods or support they seek to feel more empowered. Through collecting and coding in-depth writing …
