La Determinación Social De La Enfermedad Renal Crónica De Causas No Tradicionales (Ercnt) En Guatemala / The Social Determination Of Chronic Kidney Disease Of Non-Traditional Causes (Ckdnt) In Guatemala, Alejandro Cerón
Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

Project Solidarity is a four-year, two-sited, mixed methods research project consisting of long-term community engagement, as well as semi-structured interviews with deportees, their family members, anti-deportation organizers, and deportee-rights organizers. The goals of the project are to: 1. understand US-based mechanisms of immigrant policing, detention, and deportation, especially from "sanctuary" zones; 2. identify urgent needs of recently arrived deportees in Mexico City; 3. explore mid- and long-term challenges to reintegration for deportees in Mexico; 4. expand binational networks of information, advocacy, and resource-sharing; 5. Inform and assist local immigrant and deportee rights efforts in Chicago and Mexico City.
Experiences Of Participants In An Introductory Weight Training Program, April Martinez
Experiences Of Participants In An Introductory Weight Training Program, April Martinez
Research Papers
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a 6-week structured introductory weight training program on individuals’ efficacy using a mixed methods approach. Variables were assessed to examine psychological factors using a self-efficacy scale. Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) was used to access interest/enjoyment, perceived competence and value/usefulness of the intervention weight training program. In addition, post-intervention individual interviews were conducted to examine exercise history, intervention enjoyment, goals, motivation, adherence, and other various factors influencing exercise intervention involvement. Because the quantitative survey data was not able to be collected post-intervention, the focus of the discussion was on the …
Treaty Interpretation Under A Covenant Paradigm, Jared I. Mayer
Treaty Interpretation Under A Covenant Paradigm, Jared I. Mayer
Chicago Journal of International Law
Treaty interpretation has long drawn from the practice of contract interpretation. This is because, structurally speaking, treaties and contracts share many features. While the contract paradigm of treaty interpretation may work well for “ordinary” treaties—that is, treaties that have relatively low transaction costs for negotiating and renegotiating, whose fallout would not produce possibly disastrous consequences, and whose contents reify other, previously instantiated commitments between the parties—there is reason to doubt its efficacy with respect to “momentous” treaties. Momentous treaties are those whose transaction costs are tremendously high, fallout from which would jeopardize critical international security and prosperity goals, and that …
Labor, Land Use, And The Luxury City, Samuel Stein
Labor, Land Use, And The Luxury City, Samuel Stein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Labor, Land Use, and the Luxury City is an examination into the entanglements of working-class organizations, real estate capital, and state planning in 20th and 21st century New York City. Through theoretical inquiry, historical interpretation, and contemporary analysis, I investigate the motivations – both internally generated and externally imposed – that guide New York City unions’ and non-profits’ decision-making around questions of land use and gentrification. These institutions maintain a complex set of relationships to both real estate capital and the real estate state, leading many unions and non-profits to either support land use changes that accelerate gentrification or negotiate …
Shadow Standards And The Logic Of Costs: Care, Stewardship, And Data In U.S. Community Health, Margarite J. Whitten
Shadow Standards And The Logic Of Costs: Care, Stewardship, And Data In U.S. Community Health, Margarite J. Whitten
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the delegation of responsibility for providing health care to particular categories of marginalized populations in the United States in the absence of a uniform and universal health care system. It explores how the U.S. federal government governs patient populations at a distance by mandating that healthcare providers collect, produce, and report on patient data. Drawing from eighteen months of ethnographic research in Massachusetts clinics for the homeless and the frail elderly between 2014-2015, I argue that when marginalized patients are unable to satisfy the neoliberal ideal of self-governance to maintain their health in cost-effective ways, providers are …
Parental Shared Reading Intervention: Examining The Effects Of Structured Parental Reading Training On Vocabulary Acquisition In Children Undergoing Treatment For Leukemia, Sabina Bragg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Children diagnosed with leukemia often fail to progress academically, even falling behind due to hospitalizations and prolonged treatment protocols. Naturally, their medical challenges take priority over all other issues, though eventually absences from school place them at risk for academic deficits after the completion of treatment (Tsimicalis et al., 2018). As well, the neurotoxicity associated with chemotherapy damages their central nervous systems, exacerbating school related problems (Lewis et al., 2010). Since the survival rate for children with leukemia has improved dramatically in recent years, intervention aimed at ameliorating these problems has potent benefits. The current study compared structured and unstructured …
Humanizing Higher Education: Disrupting Racial Injustice In Teacher Preparation Through Critically Caring Communities, Melissa M. Boronkas
Humanizing Higher Education: Disrupting Racial Injustice In Teacher Preparation Through Critically Caring Communities, Melissa M. Boronkas
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Institutions of Higher Education have played a foundational role in upholding racial inequities within the teaching profession. Eighty percent of public school teachers in the United States are white and female while more than 50% of the total student population is composed of minoritized students (Boser, 2014; NYSED, 2019a). There is a lack of cultural synchronicity between teachers and students in classrooms which is believed to result in unequal outcomes for minoritized students as compared to their White peers (Ingersoll, May, Collins, 2018). These findings are indicative of an underlying problem: racial and social integration has not been achieved. In …
The International Rise Of Afro-Brazilian Modernism In The Age Of African Decolonization And Black Power, Abigail Lapin Dardashti
The International Rise Of Afro-Brazilian Modernism In The Age Of African Decolonization And Black Power, Abigail Lapin Dardashti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Two competing artistic representations of Brazilian blackness emerged from 1966 to 1988. The first began in 1966 when the Brazilian government positioned itself as a leading diplomatic partner for newly independent African nations by showcasing black Brazilian art in West Africa. Through exhibitions, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry aimed to highlight the country’s presumed homogeneous identity and absence of racism. The second definition arose through the work of artists inspired by U.S. social rights activism, who founded Brazil’s civil rights movement in 1975. Brazilian artist-activists combined symbolism from U.S. Black Power, African liberation movements, and Afro-Brazilian culture to denounce racism in …
Exploring The Lived Experience Of Decision-Making Among Family Caregivers Of Black Older Adults With Advanced Chronic Illnesses, Theresa L. Lundy
Exploring The Lived Experience Of Decision-Making Among Family Caregivers Of Black Older Adults With Advanced Chronic Illnesses, Theresa L. Lundy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This phenomenological study explored the lived experience of family caregivers' making health care decisions with or for community-dwelling older Blacks with advanced chronic illnesses. Max van Manen’s interpretative phenomenological approach was used to understand the meaning of decision-making among participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven family caregivers. Thematic analysis and interpretation of interviews revealed three essential themes: living out commitments with intention; making meaningful decisions situated in context; and reflecting on the past, anticipating the future. These essential themes culminated in an integrated interpretative statement: “Living out commitments with intentions of making or helping to make meaningful decisions that …
Afro-Americano: The Transracialization Of The African-American Spanish Speaker, John M. Flanagan
Afro-Americano: The Transracialization Of The African-American Spanish Speaker, John M. Flanagan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Transracialization is not a biological term connoting the change of one’s skin tone to become a member of a different race. Its definition has its roots in racialization—the ideological process that describes how one assembles ideas about groups based on their race and decides, for example, what a ‘Black’ person is and how ‘Black’ people speak. Thus, transracialization is a linguistic term that describes the political and sociocultural act of recontextualizing one’s phenotype with the use of language, and in so doing, upending the observers’ stereotypical expectations of who one is (Alim 2016). This dissertation deals with how Spanish influences …
New Tower Of Babel: Probing The Antecedents And Consequences Of Linguistic Ostracism, Julia N. Leone
New Tower Of Babel: Probing The Antecedents And Consequences Of Linguistic Ostracism, Julia N. Leone
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
While workplace interactions are likely to be conducted in English, the lingua franca of international business (Janssens, Lambert, & Steyaert, 2004), employees may occasionally switch to their native language in their interactions with coworkers who share knowledge of this language. Linguistic ostracism (LO) refers to situations in which two or more people use a language that others in their presence cannot understand (Dotan-Eliaz, Sommer, & Rubin, 2009). This dissertation explored the contextual antecedents of LO in a business setting, probed managerial techniques currently used to mitigate the effects of LO, and examined the relationship between LO and organizational citizenship behaviors. …
Fuitina: Love, Sex, And Rape In Modern Italy, 1945–Present, Antonella Vitale
Fuitina: Love, Sex, And Rape In Modern Italy, 1945–Present, Antonella Vitale
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The term fuitina in Sicilian dialect is a word used to describe a form of abduction, and is a variation of the more formal Italian term fuga, meaning a flight or escape. Fuitina, was essentially a sanctioned bride theft. Often, after the abduction of a woman, the abductor would seek a reparatory or rehabilitating marriage that would restore the woman’s “honor” and absolve the man of bride theft. Until 1981, the Italian legal system supported the practice of fuitina and rarely prosecuted men who kidnapped and raped women under the guise of this tradition. The practice of fuitina and …

The Stories We Tell For The Narrative We Need, Ayana Bartholomew
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The collection of oral histories presented in this project explores the variety of ways that multiply marginalized people interpret their existence within larger systemic structures of oppression. Through of lens of intersectionality, resistance, and queerness, I argue that only through personal interpretation, how one chooses to explain themselves, can we genuinely understanding the experiences of the multiply marginalized. While traditional frameworks like anti-racism and feminism help us to understand single-identity politics, they fall short in capturing the totality of an individual who exists on multiple margins. With the help of the storytellers for this project, four self-identified queer youth of …
Who Governs The Sea? An Analysis Of The Regime Complex In International Shipping, Brent Landon
Who Governs The Sea? An Analysis Of The Regime Complex In International Shipping, Brent Landon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In many respects, international shipping represents the physical embodiment of globalization. It ties states together via the exchange of raw materials and finished goods in ways that inspire important questions about power distributions, trade, growth, global governance, jurisdiction, policy coordination, sovereignty, and regimes. Although shipping is a space that can be used to illustrate many International Relations ideas, it has been understudied in International Relations. This thesis argues that the international shipping regime complex produces suboptimal outcomes because it has inefficient and peculiar design features. Specifically, it locates the responsibility to enforce rules in states that lack the ability to …

Original Gangsters: Genre, Crime, And The Violences Of Settler Democracy, Sean M. Kennedy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Building upon examinations of genericity, subalternity, and carcerality by Black, Indigenous, and women-of-color feminist scholars, my dissertation offers an account of how truth claims are produced and sustained to limit social change in representatively governed societies. Taking the gangster genre as my lens, I first resituate the form, assumed to depict white-ethnic conflict in the U.S. and Europe, as a type of resistance to race-based political economic policies imposed by imperial regimes. After linking the subaltern classes of pre-20th-century southern Europe, southern Africa, South Asia, and the U.S. South—all subjected to criminalization as a mode of colonial and capitalist control—I …
Descriptive Inhumanism: Description And Decolonial Aesthetics, Marcos Gonsalez
Descriptive Inhumanism: Description And Decolonial Aesthetics, Marcos Gonsalez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation research examines, how can the act of describing, as a mode of writing, documenting, and representing minoritized bodies, be geared towards an anti-racist, multi-species, and decolonial aesthetic praxis? Paying close attention to modes of writing categorized under the rubric of description, such as ekphrasis, reportage in documentary film, travel writing, and ethnographic description, as this dissertation contends, are integral to understanding how we perceive and apprehend racialized people living out the legacies of coloniality. Through an analysis of 20th century Anglophone literature on the Americas and contemporary queer Latina/o literature, film, and art, this research looks closely at …
Reclaiming Indiana: The Politics Of Crisis Amid The Failures Of Liberal Capitalist Modernity, Chris Grove
Reclaiming Indiana: The Politics Of Crisis Amid The Failures Of Liberal Capitalist Modernity, Chris Grove
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This ethnography examines grassroots political responses to the economic crisis that began in 2008, foremost in the US Midwest, which arguably laid the groundwork both for the election of President Donald Trump and presidential candidacy of Senator Bernie Sanders. President Obama launched his $787 billion stimulus plan in Elkhart, Indiana, in early 2009. At the height of the crisis, unemployment skyrocketed from four to 20 percent in Elkhart, and it became central to struggles over the political direction of the US. With few safety nets, Elkhart residents struggled to meet their basic needs, creating conditions for political organizing on both …
Social Contract Theory And Transitional Justice: A Philosophical Approach To A Problem Of Global Importance, Brendan Moriarty
Social Contract Theory And Transitional Justice: A Philosophical Approach To A Problem Of Global Importance, Brendan Moriarty
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis, I seek to bring together two areas of scholarly work to see how each can inform the other: social contract theory and transitional justice. The social contract, as it exists and as it was theorized about by Rousseau, was born from the world-historic forces that spread capitalism across the globe, stirring up nationalism everywhere it went. In its wake, there was vast inequality and new legal regimes which protected the hoarded wealth of the capitalist class by enshrining the right of private property along with life and liberty. To examine the intricacies of transitional justice and its …
Did The Muslim Ban Cause Islamophobia? Institutional Versus Individual Prejudice, Emma Handte
Did The Muslim Ban Cause Islamophobia? Institutional Versus Individual Prejudice, Emma Handte
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Muslim ban is part of a storied American history of Islamophobia, and as such acts as more of a reflection of members of the population’s individually held beliefs about Muslims rather than a catalyst for such beliefs. Surveys of Americans on their opinions of Muslims seem to support this view: a “thermometer” reading of respondents’ views towards Muslims shows that from 2014 to 2017 to 2019, “cold” or negative opinions of Muslims actually decreased. This corresponds to a theory of individually directed Islamophobia that is not significantly impacted by institutional policy changes, such as the Muslim ban. But at …

Bones, Burials, And The Riddle Of Truth: Reconstructing The Past Through What Has Been Left Behind, Jelena M. Begonja
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Mortuary archaeology is known to be the study of human remains and burials. The primary focus of this work has been to study all of the elements associated in burials to learn more about the burial practices and rituals in a group’s culture, however, there is much more potential in studying burial sites than just learning about a group’s burial rituals and practices. This thesis will demonstrate that it is indeed possible to make different inferences about the rest of people’s daily lives, and the truth, based from materials found in studying burials alone. For some groups without much existing …

Neutrosophic Decision Map For Critical Success Factors Prioritization In A Museum Of Religious Art, Ximena Cangas Oña, Manuel Jaramillo Burgos, Géssica Adriana Calderón Vallejo, Marcela Orellana Cepeda
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Visits to museums represent a way of keeping culture in memory of new generations. Getting to know the details that characterize each muse logical installation is a fundamental task for workers in the sector. That is why, depending on the knowledge that people have about the place, room recommendations are a problem of decision-making that are currently addressed. The present investigation proposes a method for the recommendation of museum rooms through the use of Neutrosophic Cognitive Map. A case study is applied where the proposal for the recommendation of rooms of the religious art museum of La Concepción in Riobamba …

Is Critical Thinking Really Critical? A Research Study Of The Intentional Planning For The Teaching Of Critical Thinking In The Middle Grades, Michelle Smith
Dissertations
Critical thinking is an integral part of human life. However, it is not intentionally planned for and implemented in most public educational institutions. Due to this lack of planning, not everyone thinks critically. Critical thinking is a skill that must be fostered and developed over a period for it to be applied consistently. Individuals who exhibit critical thinking are increasingly likely to be successful in life.
This study focused on the teaching of critical thinking and was conducted at Wildcat Middle School, located in a suburb of Chicago, IL. The research examined the extent to which teachers intentionally planned for …

Competency-Based Education Through The Lens Of Personalized Learning In A Large Public High School, Marcus J. Belin
Dissertations
When students end the chapter of high school, the question education must ask is, “What does it take for a student to walk across the stage and receive their high school diploma?” Is it a transcript full of passing letters ranging from A–D or is it a known belief that students do not have gaps in their knowledge and can apply their knowledge in real-world situations? This study identifies the problem and the basis of research in the program evaluation. It also focuses on identifying a policy that best supports competency-based education (CBE). Lastly, the study …
When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Face-To-Face Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Face-To-Face Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Faculty Publications
This article analyzes naturally occurring video-recorded openings during which participants make the sensory social through the action of registering—calling joint attention to a selected, publicly perceiv- able referent so others shift their sensory attention to it. It examines sequence-initial actions that register referents for which a participant is regarded as responsible. Findings demonstrate a systematic preference organization which observably guides when and how people initiate registering sequences sensitive to ownership of, and displayed stance toward, the target referent. Analysis shows how registering an owned referent achieves intersubjectivity and puts involved participants’ face, affiliation, and social relationship on the line. A …

Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To assess bone mineral density (BMD) of children with short stature using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and compare it to children with normal height. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional controlled study between May 2018 and February 2019 at various pediatric clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In total, 219 children were included: 100 had short stature, and 119 were of normal height. Data were collected from one-on-one interviews, and BMD was measured using quantitative ultrasound. Results: Children with short stature had significantly lower BMD z-scores than children with normal height ( p <0.05). The use of vitamin D supplements was related to higher BMD z-scores in children with short stature (p<0.05). A significant association was found between higher BMD z-scores, and both age ( p =0.05) and height ( p =0.02). Through a further division of children with short stature into those with and those without growth hormone deficiencies, we show that growth hormone deficiency was positively associated with lower BMD z-scores; however, the p -value was 0.06. Conclusions: Compared with children of normal height, those with short stature had lower BMD. Height, vitamin D supplementation, and age were all significantly correlated with higher BMD, while growth hormone deficiency was correlated with lower BMD.
