Empire’S Informal Ties: Pioneer Anthropologists In Davao, 1904–1916, Patricia Irene; Dacudao
Empire’S Informal Ties: Pioneer Anthropologists In Davao, 1904–1916, Patricia Irene; Dacudao
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The five Americans who studied the indigenous Bagobo people in Davao from 1904 to 1916 did not adhere to the evolutionary anthropology championed by colonial administrator Dean Worcester. Their fieldwork, being either mostly self-supported or through the privately funded Field Museum of Natural History, was also financially independent of the government. Thisarticle studies their personal, academic, and professional quests in the context of museum collections, party politics, and changes in the discipline of anthropology. The circumstances of their visits and subsequent publications on Davao show that these pioneers pursued anthropology with a different direction, away from state stereotypes and imperial …

What Made The Masses Revolutionary?: Ignorance, Character, And Class In Teodoro Agoncillo’S The Revolt Of The Masses, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Regarded as a classic in Philippine historiography, Teodoro Agoncillo’s The Revolt of the Masses published in 1956 is examined to understand the author’s explanation of what made “the masses” revolutionary. The study finds a profound incoherence: Agoncillo posited literacy and political consciousness in explaining the explosion in the Katipunan’s membership, but throughout the book the dominant characterization of the masses was one of ignorance, gullibility, impulsiveness, irrationality, and treachery. The study explains this contradiction in light of Agoncillo’s blending of literature and history, the educated elite’s unquestioned assumptions about ignorance, and the ethos of the postwar “proletarian” writer.KEYWORDS: THE MASSES …

Play And Propaganda: The Sports Of The Ilustrados In Nineteenth-Century Europe, Micah Jeiel Perez
Play And Propaganda: The Sports Of The Ilustrados In Nineteenth-Century Europe, Micah Jeiel Perez
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The adoption of nineteenth-century European sporting practices was a component in the ilustrados’ creation of a national identity. By highlighting the ilustrados’ participation in modernizing individual sports (e.g., gymnastics, fencing, and pistol shooting), thearticle shows how the adoption of foreign sports promised these young men from the Spanish Philippines an opportunity to stand on equal footing with their supposed betters. The constant training of the body was treated as a tool to maintain health, a weapon against vices, and an avenue to achieve excellence in a modern cultural space associated with ideals of masculinity and civilization.KEYWORDS: ILUSTRADO • SPORTS • …

Undressing Rizal’S Message: Clothing And Gender In Noli Me Tángere, Stephanie; Ateneo Coo
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle explores José Rizal’s Noli me tángere as a site and source of rumination on clothing’s historical significance in the Philippines in the late nineteenth century. The characters in the novel represented various social types, whose clothes contribute to our knowledge of nineteenth-century men’s and women’s clothing and to the role clothes played in colonial power relationships, status competition among natives, and gender politics. Clothes suggested a period of ferment when colonial divides were being blurred in part by intermarriages and upward social mobility. Through clothing, the novel also showed how female body parts were sexualized and subjected to the …

Using Group Affinity To Predict Community Formation In Social Networks, Joseph Leung
Using Group Affinity To Predict Community Formation In Social Networks, Joseph Leung
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A well-studied topic in network theory is detecting the communities found in real-world networks. Community detection is a technique to better understand the way in which small dense substructures appear in these networks. Such substructures can often tell important information about groups that form in such systems. A prominent feature of many networks is that they evolve over time, forming and dissolving new edges between different nodes that appear. In this thesis, we consider how we can use the community structure of a network at a certain point in time to predict the state of a network’s communities at some …

Leadership is a key issue in the study of collective behavior in social animals. Affiliation–leadership models predict that dyadic partner preferences based on grooming relationships or alliance formation positively affect an individual’s decision to follow or support a conspecific. In the case of many primate species, females without young infants are attracted to mother–infant dyads. However, the effects of mother–infant–female associations on affiliation–leadership models remain less clear. In free-ranging Tibetan macaques Macaca thibetana, we used social network analysis to examine the importance of “mother-infant-adult female” social bridging events as a predictor of who leads and who follows during group …

Life Histories Center Performance As Response To Text, Susan Browne, Marjorie Madden
College of Education Departmental Research
Based in anthropology (Cole & Knowles, 2001), life history inquiry into literature emphasizes deep understandings of literary characters that are expressed through dramatic performance. For teachers or teacher-educators, life histories offer a powerful teaching strategy. Life histories support locating readers in a particular pattern or “grammar” of events, situations, and goals while also revealing the subjective worlds of characters who are involved in such events. In an undergraduate Honors Literacies course, life histories performances in response to the young adult novel, The Skin I’m In(Flake, 1998), enabled examinations of the complex interaction of characters, their lives, and particular contexts.

The Qualitative Report
The Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA) is a once vibrant community that experienced socioeconomic decline through urban renewal polices and related factors. This article presents poems constructed from interviews with women who considered the Hill District to be their home. Interviews were completed as part of an undergraduate-level community-engaged learning course in collaboration with a local agency. One component of the course was a public reading, during which the poems were shared with members of the community and the University. The poems were created through use of the Listening Guide, a feminist relational method. These emotionally resonant poems, known …

Damage Control Interdisciplinarity: An Antidote To Death Despair In Military Medicine, Erika "Ann" Jeschke
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
“Diseases of despair” is a conceptually broad category used to describe the phenomenon of premature mortality caused by suicide, drug poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease. Central to this conceptualization of mortality is that death occurs too early in an entire population of individuals infected with social despair. Implicit in the diseases of despair construct is a powerful normative claim about the manner and time of death—that death is bad if it is contextualized in unwanted conditions and happens before reaching midlife. As such, diseases of despair ought to be reduced, if not eliminated. Interestingly, military medical research on combat casualties …
Mystic Identifications: Reading Kenneth Burke And “Non-Identification” Through Asian American Rhetoric, Nathan D. Wood
Mystic Identifications: Reading Kenneth Burke And “Non-Identification” Through Asian American Rhetoric, Nathan D. Wood
Theses and Dissertations
Krista Ratcliffe’s term “non-identification” offers a version of identification that assumes identity is not always identifiable. As an attitude that fosters cross-cultural listening, non-identification asks us to listen to others from a place of “neutrality,” with “hesitancy,” “humility,” and “pause” in order to consider identity’s fluid nature (73). This thesis first argues that this term might also describe speaking strategies premised on non-identifiability. As I’ll show, an inventive non-identification would articulate some rhetorical strategies that neither “identification” nor “disidentification” currently articulate. However, rhetorical scholars need more theoretical and practical guidance for what this kind of speech looks like. So, this …

Genetic Diversity And Low Stratification Of The Population Of The United Arab Emirates, Guan K. Tay, Andreas Henschel, Gihan Daw Elbait, Habiba S. Al Safar

© Copyright © 2020 Tay, Henschel, Daw Elbait and Al Safar. With high consanguinity rates on the Arabian Peninsula, it would not have been unexpected if the population of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was shown to be relatively homogenous. However, this study of 1000 UAE nationals provided a contrasting perspective, one of a relatively heterogeneous population. Located at the apex of Europe, Asia, and Africa, the observed diversity could be explained by a plethora of migration patterns since the first Out-of-Africa movement. A strategy to explore the extent of genetic variation of the population of the UAE is presented. …

Global Health Education In Chinese Universities: Potential For Collaboration With Schools Of Nursing, Quanlei Li
Theses
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and the Chinese Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CCUGH) were established within public health schools in North America in 2009 and in China in 2013. These consortiums are mandated to engage a variety of complementary disciplines including those in the health sphere such as public health, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing as well as those outside of the health arena, including law, environmental studies, business, anthropology, etc. Specifically, expanding the exposure of nursing students to global health curricula is critical as nurses are essential actors in the health care system: making …

Estimating The Onset And Extent Of Dieback Of Phragmites Australis Using The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index And Remotely Sensed Land Cover Classifications, Aimee M. Beaudette
LSU Master's Theses
Phragmites australis is cosmopolitan plant species with an invasive variety present throughout most of North America. In the Balize Delta, Louisiana, USA, P. australis plays an important role in combatting subsidence, maintaining navigation channels, and protecting interior fish and wildlife habitat from waves and storm surge. In 2016 a dieback of P. australis was reported by wetland managers, coinciding with the appearance of an invasive Asian scale insect (Nipponaclerda biwakoensis), though the specific cause is still unknown. Two previous efforts attempted to identify the onset of dieback conditions met with limited success. Using Landsat images from 1985 to …

Is The Pen Mightier Than The Keyboard: Creative Writer's Preferences In Writing Implements, Jenae Grant
Curiosity
Throughout history, writers have used various writing implements to put their thoughts down and share them with others. Although research has been done on what writing implement helps put thoughts down easily and effectively in an academic setting (Goldberg, Russell & Cook 2003; “WritingLonghand” 2016), results vary, and no research has been done on what implements university students studying creative writing prefer. This study looked at students majoring in English at Utah State University on what writing implements they prefer when writing creatively. The results indicate that a small majority prefers computers, but digital composition is closely followed by pen …

JOHNSON CITY (June 11, 2020) – Tennesseans are showing increased levels of anxiety and depressive disorder post COVID-19. While a national survey conducted in 2019 found that 8.2% of adults have symptoms of anxiety and 6.6% had symptoms of depressive disorder in the previous seven days (CDC, 2020), these numbers were considerably higher in the most recent Tennessee Poll conducted from April 22-May 1 …

The Tribe During President Saleh: A Friend Or A Foe, Waleed Derhem
Theses and Dissertations
This research paper offers a different institutional approach to studying state-societal relations in modern Yemen. The re-conceptualization of the terms - tribe and tribalism- paved the path for a deeper investigation of the interaction between the state and the tribe. The rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh (1978-2011) was the timeline dissected in this detailed comparative historical analysis. This study unveiled the prominence of tribalism as an informal institution that governed state-societal relations in Yemen. The outcome derived out of these formal-informal interactions suggests that the tribe in Yemen is neither a friend nor a foe, but locates tribalism as …

Flooding, Landslides, Wildfires, Air Pollution, And Income: Risk In California, Brittany Bondi, Alyssa J. Kaewwilai
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
California is infamously known for its likelihood of environmental hazards such as flooding, landslides, air pollution, and forest fires which can be attributed to the natural climate of the area as well as anthropologically influenced climate change. Air pollution also poses potential threats and dangers to the civilians of California as increasing populations and uses of fossil fuels continue to contribute to the growing issue of climate change. The goal of this study was to examine and analyze the geospatial trends environmental hazards in California such as landslides, air pollution, flooding, and forest fires.
