The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek Jul 2020

The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek

Art & Art History ETDs

Scholars once considered Inka khipus (14th-16th CE) to be a technological development unique to the Inka Empire. We now know that the earlier central Andean Wari (6th-11th CE) also made use of khipus, calling into question the Inka primacy of the technology. Understanding the origins and transformation of khipu notation in the Andes sheds light on the ways that information technologies figured into Andean state formation and administration, and impacts larger understandings of how tactile notational systems develop into writing and information storage. This study articulates how, just as the Inka inherited khipu technology …

A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays Jul 2020

A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays

Publications and Research

INTRODUCTION Zine scholarship is a relatively new academic field that has emerged since the late 1990’s. Now that two decades have passed since the publication of Stephen Duncombe’s seminal text, Notes From Underground, it is possible to take a landscape view of how and why zine scholars have studied zines in peer-reviewed journal publications. Knowing how scholars have studied zines can teach us about how zines and zine culture have contributed to academic knowledge. We can also learn which subjects are understudied as zine scholars continue to investigate these curious ephemeral print objects. METHODS This study uses citation analysis …

Estimating Age From 2d And 3d Imaging Of Skeletal Remains: An Assessment Of Reliability Using The Medial Clavicle, Sarah Ghannam

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Research into the utility of digital imagery in conducting remote forensic analyses, or analyses of remains occurring outside of the laboratory, is necessary for the progression of forensic anthropology as new technologies arise. This research assesses the utility of 2D photographs and 3D scans in the assessment of the stage of fusion of the medial clavicular epiphysis. In this study, six participants analyzed 44 physical clavicles, photographs, and 3D scans to determine if stage of fusion can be reliably assessed using digital imagery. The participants either had extensive anthropological experience or no experience, which allows for assessment regarding how experience …

The Role Of Microfinance Workers In Financialization: Negotiating The Meaning Of Development In China, Xue Ma Jul 2020

The Role Of Microfinance Workers In Financialization: Negotiating The Meaning Of Development In China, Xue Ma

Theses and Dissertations

Microfinance is an attempt to alleviate poverty through offering collateral-free small loans to poor borrowers, especially women in developing countries or rural areas. Though it is indeed an actual economic activity, usually engaged in through some type of bank, there is much that is informal and context-bound in these transactions, making microfinance a kind of “social business.” While the impact of microfinance on women borrowers has been discussed many times, only a few studies have looked at the significance of the other members of the interaction: the microfinance workers, who are instrumental intermediaries between the women-borrowers and the microfinance institutions …

Danzantes Aztecas Y Promotoras Tradicionales: The Ritual Performances And Identity Politics Of A Mexican American Danzantes Aztecas Y Promotoras Tradicionales: The Ritual Performances And Identity Politics Of A Mexican American Ceremonial Community, Dina K. Barajas

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation is an ethnographic study which examined the ritual performances of an interconnected Mexican American and Mexican immigrant danza Azteca and curanderismo ceremonial community located in central and northern New Mexico, and central México. This project also explored if and how these rituals recognize the practitioners’ indigeneity. As a Mexican American and Native scholar and ceremonial participant of this community, I provided an “insider’s” understanding of the epistemologies and ontologies that inform these ceremonies. My positionality and methodology acted as a lens to critically examine danzantes’ and promotoras tradicionales’ claims of indigeneity. Importantly, this work provides a fluid conceptualization …

Quantitatively Motivated Model Development Framework: Downstream Analysis Effects Of Normalization Strategies, Jessica M. Rudd Jul 2020

Quantitatively Motivated Model Development Framework: Downstream Analysis Effects Of Normalization Strategies, Jessica M. Rudd

Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations

Through a review of epistemological frameworks in social sciences, history of frameworks in statistics, as well as the current state of research, we establish that there appears to be no consistent, quantitatively motivated model development framework in data science, and the downstream analysis effects of various modeling choices are not uniformly documented. Examples are provided which illustrate that analytic choices, even if justifiable and statistically valid, have a downstream analysis effect on model results. This study proposes a unified model development framework that allows researchers to make statistically motivated modeling choices within the development pipeline. Additionally, a simulation study is …

An Ontology Of Human Flourishing: Economic Development And Epistemologies Of Faith, Hope, And Love, Jan Van Vliet

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This chapter demonstrates that the presence of poverty, and its associated pathologies, is of concern to all humankind whose innate desire is to seek the flourishing of fellow humanity. The traditional, often unsuccessful, methods of poverty alleviation have been challenged in creative, bold, and refreshing ways that are superior in both identifying poverty and moving agencies and pathways toward greater success. This involves a technical application of quantitative microeconomics which is paired with expertise and insights on human behavior gleaned from the behavioral sciences. It turns out that human behavior is often better explained by behavioral categories such as hope …

Living With Machines. Ethical Implications And Imaginative Agency As Local Tactics Of Dwelling And Resistance In Everyday Interactions With Artificial Intelligence, Ester Toribio-Roura

Articles

With the widespread of the Internet of things (IoT), algorithms are increasingly managing our everyday life. From navigating our way in cities to keeping track of our health, artificial intelligence has been beneficial to us in many ways. However, its algorithms can also be detrimental as a consequence of biased human programming. The result is that while technological progress delivers more and more human-like artificial intelligence, humans become dehumanised and therefore, disempowered in their everyday interactions with artificial intelligence. The solution(s) is not single-handed and calls for combined interventions at the macro and micro levels. Whilst reviewing recent top-down developments on …

Figurillas Masculinas Con Atributos De Rango, Del Centro De México, Durante El Formativo, Patricia Ochoa Castillo Jul 2020

Figurillas Masculinas Con Atributos De Rango, Del Centro De México, Durante El Formativo, Patricia Ochoa Castillo

Congreso internacional sobre iconografía precolombina, Barcelona, 2019. Actas.

Figurines from the Formative period (2300 b.C.-100 a.C.) in the …

Tradiciones Plásticas Y Ontologías: Problemas En Torno Al Estudio De La Iconografía Del Período Medio Del No. Argentino, María Alba Bovisio

Congreso internacional sobre iconografía precolombina, Barcelona, 2019. Actas.

In this paper are analyzed pieces, …

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Here, we show that the last century of fire suppression in the western U.S. has resulted in fire intensities that are unique over more than 900 years of record in ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa). Specifically, we use the heat-sensitive luminescence signal of archaeological ceramics and tree-ring fire histories to show that a recent fire during mild weather conditions was more intense than anything experienced in centuries of frequent wildfires. We support this with a particularly robust set of optically stimulated luminescence measurements on pottery from an archaeological site in northern New Mexico. The heating effects of an October 2012 …

Journal of Appalachian Health

Nothing tells the story of people working together better than a community quilt. A diversity of talents, colors, and materials brought together through skill and shared purpose. Perhaps never before have we as Americans needed a stronger reminder that many hands make short work of big problems. The work presented here by the L.A.U.N.C.H. Collaborative offers a new framework for health care that could be compared to a digital quilt, powered by community-based participatory design, with lived expertise and the newest advances in broadband-enabled connected health solutions. This work demonstrates the value and need to engage local communities and what …

Step Width, Gluteus Medius Activation And Postural Sway Responses To A Novel Gait Treatment: A Pilot Study, Maddison G. Misiak, Stacy E. Ruotsala, Olivia D. Perrin, Sarah Breen

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The current study explored the acute effect of a novel rehabilitative device (NewGait™) on several interrelated variables associated with gait. Participants completed an eight-minute walking treatment wearing the NewGait™. Postural sway (center of pressure velocity), step width, and gluteus medius (GM) muscle activity were measured before during and after the treatment. No significant changes were noted in step width or GM activity during the treatment. Step width narrowed significantly after the treatment (p=0.02) and postural sway improved in the eyes open condition (p=0.02). These results indicate gait changes in healthy participant’s following use of the NewGait™ device. However, due to …

Mechanical Properties Of The Achilles Tendon In Runners With Tendinopathy: A Pilot Study, Jiri Skypala, Daniel Jandacka

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The aim of this study was to compare the dimensions of Achilles tendon, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio between runners with tendinopathy and healthy control runners. We paired 12 runners diagnosed with baseline tendinopathy with 12 healthy control runners. The dimensions of Achilles tendon, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio were measured using kinematic analysis and ultrasound imaging. Based on the parametric paired-samples T-Test, we compared the dependent variables measured on the affected lower limb. No differences were found between the groups for Achilles tendon length, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio. Runners …

The Relationship Between Achilles Tendon Dimensions And Foot Strike Index In Rearfoot And Non-Rearfoot Runners, Jiri Skypala, Joseph Hamill, Daniel Jandacka

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between Achilles tendon dimensions and foot strike index in rearfoot and non-rearfoot runners. 107 recreational runners were divided into a group of rearfoot (n = 88) and a group of non-rearfoot runners (n = 19). Achilles tendon dimensions were measured by a combination of ultrasonography imaging and kinematic analysis. To analyse the footfall pattern, each participant performed 8 successful trials of running at their stated self-preferred endurance speed. Partial correlation was used for statistical analysis. Runners in the group of non-rearfoot runners, whose footfall pattern is more over forefoot, have …

Step-To-Step Spatiotemporal Determinants Of Female Sprint Performance During The Entire Acceleration Phase, Sam Gleadhill, Ryu Nagahara Jul 2020

Step-To-Step Spatiotemporal Determinants Of Female Sprint Performance During The Entire Acceleration Phase, Sam Gleadhill, Ryu Nagahara

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to clarify the kinematic determinants of maximal effort female sprint performance during the entire acceleration phase of a single sprint. Fifteen sub-elite female sprinters completed a 60 m maximal effort sprint from starting blocks over a long force platform system. Ground reaction force data was used to calculate step length, step frequency, support time and flight time. Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient was used to clarify the association between the rate of changes in these spatiotemporal variables and acceleration at every step. Peformance determinants elucidated included the rate of changes in step length (1st …

Do Beetles Have Experiences? How Can We Tell?, Matt Cartmill Jul 2020

Do Beetles Have Experiences? How Can We Tell?, Matt Cartmill

Animal Sentience

We attribute consciousness to other humans because their anatomy and behavior resembles our own and their verbal descriptions of subjective experiences correspond to ours. Nonhuman mammals have somewhat humanlike behavior and anatomy, but without the verbal descriptions. Their sentience is therefore open to Cartesian doubt. Robot "minds" lack humanlike behavior and anatomy, and so their sentience is generally discounted no matter what sentences they generate. Invertebrates lack both neurological similarity and language. Although it may be safest in making moral judgments to assume that some invertebrates are sentient, cogent reasons for thinking so must await an objective causal explanation for …
