Dogs And Death: A Changing Association, Andrea Giles
Dogs And Death: A Changing Association, Andrea Giles
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Dogs have always been associated with death. However, these associations have changed as our relationship with them has changed. In the beginning of our relationship dogs were often associated with evils and devils, then evolved to become our protectors, and now are viewed as family and loyal companions. Dogs have not changed, though - they have always been our companions and protectors. Rather, their associations with death tell us about ourselves and how we view the world.
The Effects Of Estrogen And Arousal On Latent Inhibition, Michael Herron
The Effects Of Estrogen And Arousal On Latent Inhibition, Michael Herron
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The behaviors of humans and animals are dependent on neurotransmitters and hormones that affect attention, alertness, and associative learning. These include the hormone estrogen (which plays an interesting role in cognition and attentional processes) and the neurotransmitter orexin (involved in wakefulness, arousal and goal-directed behaviors). Here we evaluated the roles of orexin receptors and estrogen in Latent Inhibition (LI), a measure of attention and associative learning. Latent inhibition is a behavioral phenomenon in which an organism's ability to associate new meaning to a familiar previously inconsequential (pre-exposed) stimulus is reduced when compared to associating meaning to a novel stimulus (non …

German Thought And Animality, Jack Leonard
German Thought And Animality, Jack Leonard
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The question of whether and to what extent animals have minds is a key problem for philosophy, cognitive and animal science, and lived experience as a whole. This problem, which will be called "the Problem of Animality", concerns whether animals can be said to have the attributes of consciousness, thinking, moral worth, and other fundamental concepts.
The modern approach to what will be called the "Problem of Animality" had its genesis with the philosopher Rene Descartes. The Problem of Animality was not a question in itself for Descartes, but instead, a question that was answered through the application of his …
Still Life With Three Puppies, Jenna Mills
Still Life With Three Puppies, Jenna Mills
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
During the nationwide Covid-19 shutdown, there has been a surge in demand for man's best friend. As American animal shelters have issued calls for help amidst strained resources, adoptions have reached a level never before seen. Being isolated for an uncertain amount of time has encouraged many American families to bring home a new four-legged member. These so-called "Pandemic Puppies" have been a ray of sunshine in a dim world situation.
Few artworks could better represent the current pet-owning situation than Paul Gauguin's "Still Life with Three Puppies". Although painted in 1888, many similarities can be drawn between the painting …
Cytokine Indicators Of Inflammation In Mice Fed A Western Type Diet, Emily Mortensen
Cytokine Indicators Of Inflammation In Mice Fed A Western Type Diet, Emily Mortensen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Colorectal cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and is projected to cause 53,200 deaths during 2020. The risk of colon cancer increases by 8-20% in individuals who suffer from colitis, which is inflammation of the colon lining. Colitis is common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The development of colorectal cancer is complex and can be associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, which has been shown to be affected by diet. Disruption of the gut microbiome can lead to the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria …
The Importance Of Experiment Replication In Understanding Distribution Of 'Alalā Seed Retention Time, Camilla Moses
The Importance Of Experiment Replication In Understanding Distribution Of 'Alalā Seed Retention Time, Camilla Moses
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Hawaiian forests have suffered damages from climate change, introduced plants, and introduced animals that trample or graze on the native vegetation. The 'Alalā, a native Hawaiian bird that is being reintroduced from captivity, is a disperser of native plants and can facilitate the restoration of native vegetation in Hawaiian forests. If the seed retention time and the flight paths of the 'Alalā are known, we can estimate the distribution of the seeds they disperse and see the effect the species has on forest restoration. In this study, the seed retention time of the 'Alalā is predicted from body mass using …
Identification And Characterization Of Pd-L1 In Bovine Placentas, Andre Nguyen
Identification And Characterization Of Pd-L1 In Bovine Placentas, Andre Nguyen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Successful bovine pregnancy requires that the maternal immune system modulate T lymphocytes. Program death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is an inhibitory protein that is associated with immune tolerance and modulation of T cells. Previous studies have linked PD-L1 to suppressing T cell activity and modulating cytokine production, therefore, inducing maternal tolerance and acceptance of the fetus. PD-L1 may be a possible mechanism involved in establishing successful bovine pregnancies. To this day, no evidence of PD-L1 RNA or protein was found in bovine placentas. We hypothesize that PD-L1 is present in the bovine placenta and its expression differs between trimesters. To analyze the …

How Alternative Proteins Are Helping Consumers Reduce Their Carbon Footprint, Samantha Petersen
How Alternative Proteins Are Helping Consumers Reduce Their Carbon Footprint, Samantha Petersen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The alternative protein market is trending toward creating more animal product alternatives, not just meatless meat. Alternative protein is a growing market that creates meat alternatives for groups like vegans and vegetarians. Large meat companies are starting to invest in meatless meat research and technology. Reducing meat consumption is one of the best ways to reduce land and water usage as well as reducing carbon emissions.
Drought Tolerant Plants For The Western United States In Response To Climate Change, Emily Rice
Drought Tolerant Plants For The Western United States In Response To Climate Change, Emily Rice
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The Southwest United States has been severely impacted by climate change. Already the driest region of the US, temperatures in the area have risen approximately 2 degrees Fahrenheit in the previous century ("Climate Impacts in the Southwest", 2017). Those temperatures are expected to rise by 3.5 to 9.5 degrees before the end of the current century ("Climate Impacts in the Southwest", 2017). In a region already considered to have many drought areas, this temperature increase will stress water sources, making the competition between farmers, urban areas, and native groups to become more intense. The same temperature increases that cause severe …
Dogs In The Home Improve The Quality Of Life Of The People Living Inside, Tanner Stevenson
Dogs In The Home Improve The Quality Of Life Of The People Living Inside, Tanner Stevenson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
This poster explores how dogs improve the quality of life of the people they interact with. Regardless of underlying issues that the human faces, every dog helps to improve the situation of that human. From service animals helping to improve the quality of life of their owners in other ways than what meets the eye, to dogs improving the chance of allergy immunity for children, dogs impact the lives of humans for good. This project explores the way that studies have proven the worth of the dog in the home.
The Dog As A Trend In Art, Whitney Stewart
The Dog As A Trend In Art, Whitney Stewart
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
I have always believed that art is one of the biggest forms of communication and signs of cultural assimilation and it has been throughout history. I choose to explore the role that dogs play in this theme. From changes in the symbolism of the dog and the ethics of breeding, art reveals a lot about our furry friends. While I learn much about dogs by themselves, the way we represent them also says a lot about our society. Do we see animals as more than us in some way and less in others? Is a dog painting really about the …
Characters And Dogs: Relationships Between Dogs And Humans In Fictional Literature, Emily Van Wagoner
Characters And Dogs: Relationships Between Dogs And Humans In Fictional Literature, Emily Van Wagoner
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Works of fiction provide a new outlook on life without the constraints of society's expectations. Fiction provides the opportunity to explore relationship boundaries in a safe way that society might deem as improper or wrong. One way that fiction shows us this is the symbolism between the relation of humans and dogs, especially the similarities and how they can reflect one another. Using this as a basis, reflection upon real-life relationships can happen as well as viewing how they are discussed through fictional means.
Relationships are not simply how two beings interact with one another, rather it is also about …

37 years ago, the daughter of a Pakistani dictator was gifted a 1-year-old Asian Elephant calf named Kaavan. Kaavan ended up in Marghazar Zoo, a run-down facility in Islamabad. He had one elephant companion; a female named Saheli. When Saheli died in 2012, Kavaan spent days in his enclosure with her dead body before she was finally removed. Elephants are known to experience grief in response to the death of their companions. Since then, Kaavan has spent all of his time apart from other elephants, earning him the nickname “the loneliest elephant.” He has spent much of his existence in …

The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has spread rapidly amongst countries all around the globe. Compared to the rise in cases, there are few Covid-19 testing kits available. Due to the lack of testing kits for the public, it is useful to implement an automated AI-based E-health decision support system as a potential alternative method for Covid-19 detection. As per medical examinations, the symptoms of Covid-19 could be somewhat analogous to those of pneumonia, though certainly not identical. Considering the enormous number of cases of Covid-19 and pneumonia, and the complexity of the related images stored, the data pertaining to this problem …
Cellular Proliferation Of Equine Bone Marrow- And Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Decline With Increasing Donor Age, Jasmin Bagge, James N. Macleod, Lise C. Berg
Cellular Proliferation Of Equine Bone Marrow- And Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Decline With Increasing Donor Age, Jasmin Bagge, James N. Macleod, Lise C. Berg
Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications
Background: Bone marrow (BM)- and adipose tissue (AT)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are used increasingly for autologous cell therapy in equine practice to treat musculoskeletal and other injuries. Current recommendations often call for 10–100 million MSCs per treatment, necessitating the expansion of primary cells in culture prior to therapeutic use. Of concern, human and rodent studies have shown a decline of both MSC recovery from sampled tissue and in vitro proliferative capacity with increasing donor age. This may be problematic for applications of autologous cell-based therapies in the important equine demographic of older patients.
Objectives: To investigate the effect of …

We explore marine reservoir effects (MREs) in seal bones from the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas regions. Ringed and bearded seals have served as dietary staples in human populations along the coasts of Arctic northeast Asia and North America for several millennia. Radiocarbon (14C) dates on seal bones and terrestrial materials (caribou, plants seeds, wood, and wood charcoal) were compared from archaeological sites in the Bering Strait region of northwestern Alaska to assess MREs in these sea mammals over time. We also compared these results to 14C dates on modern seal specimens collected in AD 1932 and …
Electrosprayed Chitosan-Calcium Phosphate Nanoshells Composite Coatings On Silanated Titanium Plates, Andrew Blass Watson
Electrosprayed Chitosan-Calcium Phosphate Nanoshells Composite Coatings On Silanated Titanium Plates, Andrew Blass Watson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The aim of this work was to take advantage of the electrospray technology and the osteocompatibility of both chitosan and calcium phosphate (CaP) to fabricate chitosan coatings loaded with CaP nanoshell particles. The key electrospray parameters of capillary diameter, voltage, and pressure were identified and adjusted for creating uniform chitosan-CaP coatings on titanium surfaces. Coatings containing from 0 to 1 wt% CaP particles to chitosan mass were electrosprayed on to silanated titanium to create composite coatings bonded to the metal surface. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that CaP particles were homogenously distributed throughout the …

Holiday healthfulness conversations are dominated by overindulgence of consumption and then, largely in reference to resolutions to do better, physical activity, and exercise aspirations. Consistency was found in self-reported agreement with a series of holiday healthfulness statements, across time, holidays (Thanksgiving versus Christmas), and samples of respondents. The largest proportion of respondents displaying social desirability bias (SDB) were found in response to two statements, namely “I will consume more alcohol during the holiday season than at other times of the year” at (63–66%) and “I make it a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight” (60–63%). Cheap talk was tested as …

Aquatic invasive species negatively impact the native aquatic communities in many parts of the world. Every nation faces the issue of introduced species, but the efforts to manage them depend on the varying capacity and willingness to manage invasions globally. Aquatic invasive species have their own set of challenges; it is crucial to understand the invasion dynamics of these species as well as their nature of interaction with humans to devise better mitigation processes. The freshwater aquatic wealth of India is seriously threatened by pollution, flow modification, overexploitation, habitat degradation and invasive alien species. India has several globally known freshwater …
