"Anishinaabe Time": Temporalities And Impact Assessment In Pipeline Reviews, Sakihitowin Awasis
"Anishinaabe Time": Temporalities And Impact Assessment In Pipeline Reviews, Sakihitowin Awasis
Geography & Environment Publications
Indigenous ways of living that embrace multiple temporalities have been largely supplanted by a single, linear colonial temporality. Drawing on theoretical insights from Indigenous geographies and political ecology, this article considers how pipeline reviews come into being through contested temporalities and how dominant modes of time dispossess Indigenous peoples of self-determination in energy decision-making. In particular, Anishinaabe clan governance – a form of kinship that provides both social identity and function based on relations to animal nations – is undermined in colonial decision-making processes. Through analysis of documents from Canada’s National Energy Board and interviews with Anishinaabe pipeline opponents, I …

A Humanities-Based Explanation For The Effects Of Emotional Eating And Perceived Stress On Food Choice Motives During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Wan Shen, Lucy M. Long, Chia-Hao Shih, Mary-Jon Ludy
Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications
Perceived stress affects emotional eating and food choices. However, the extent to which stress associates with food choice motives is not completely understood. This study assessed whether emotional eating mediates the associations between perceived stress levels and food choice motives (i.e., health, mood, convenience, natural content, price, sensory appeal, familiarities, weight control, and ethical concerns) during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic. A total of 800 respondents were surveyed in the United States in June 2020. Their perceived stress, emotional eating, and food choice motives were assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale, Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, and Food Choice Questionnaire, respectively. …

Analytic Provenance For Software Reverse Engineers, Wayne C. Henry
Analytic Provenance For Software Reverse Engineers, Wayne C. Henry
Theses and Dissertations
Reverse engineering is a time-consuming process essential to software-security tasks such as malware analysis and vulnerability discovery. During the process, an engineer will follow multiple leads to determine how the software functions. The combination of time and possible explanations makes it difficult for the engineers to maintain a context of their findings within the overall task. Analytic provenance tools have demonstrated value in similarly complex fields that require open-ended exploration and hypothesis vetting. However, they have not been explored in the reverse engineering domain. This dissertation presents SensorRE, the first analytic provenance tool designed to support software reverse engineers. A …

Strategies Of Plant Biotechnology To Meet The Increasing Demand Of Food And Nutrition In India, Santanu De
Biology Faculty Articles
A groundbreaking application of biotechnology research during the recent past has been improvement of crop health and production. India being one of the most rapidly developing countries with an enormous population and remarkable biodiversity, plant biotechnology promises significant potential to contribute to characterization and conservation of the biodiversity, increasing its usefulness. However, India’s green revolution was noted to be insufficient to feed the country's teeming millions. Therefore, novel approaches in crop biotechnology had to be aimed at ensuring better productivity and quality of cultivars. This paper provides a comprehensive review of research undertaken mainly in the last couple of decades …

The 14-3-3 (Ywha) Proteins In Mammalian Reproduction, Santanu De
Biology Faculty Articles
The 14-3-3 (YWHA or Tyrosine 3-Monooxygenase/Tryptophan 5-Monooxygenase Activation protein) is an acidic and homologous protein family involved in regulation of key biological events including cell cycle, signal transduction and development. They are highly conserved and are expressed ubiquitously across a wide variety of species ranging from plants to animals. Seven isoforms of 14-3-3 exist in mammals, which are encoded by separate genes, have tissue-specific, developmental stage-specific as well as isoform-specific presence and consequences. It is known that these proteins play significant roles in mitosis of mammalian cells and meiosis of amphibians. However, their effects on development and functioning of mammalian …
Ecocide Is Genocide: Decolonizing The Definition Of Genocide, Lauren J. Eichler
Ecocide Is Genocide: Decolonizing The Definition Of Genocide, Lauren J. Eichler
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
I demonstrate how the destruction of the land, water, and nonhuman beings of the Americas constitutes genocide according to Indigenous metaphysics and through analysis of the decimation of the American buffalo. In Genocide Studies, the destruction of nonhuman beings and nature is typically treated as a separate, but related type of phenomenon—ecocide, the destruction of nonhuman nature. In this article I follow in the footsteps of Native American and First Nations scholars to argue that ecocide and the genocide of Indigenous peoples are inextricably linked and are even constitutive of the same act. I argue that if justice is to …

Spotlight On Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder: A Systematic Review Of Research On Women, Ewelina Kowalewska, Mateusz Gola, Shane W. Kraus, Michal Lew-Starowicz
Psychology Faculty Research
Purpose of Review: World Health Organization recently included compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) to the upcoming 11th edition of International Classification of Diseases (6C72). Despite the potential benefits of this decision (eg, the acceleration of research in the field will allow the development of effective treatments), previous research focused mainly on men, and as a result, we do not have an accurate clinical picture of compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) among women. Therefore, in this systematic review, we aim to present available knowledge on this topical subject. Literature search was conducted in the guideline of PRISMA methodology. Studies were identified from …

Culture Change And Quality Of Life In Elderly Persons Living In Long Term Care, Carol S. Jones
Dissertations
Quality of life in long term care (LTC) is a concern for many stakeholders. The elders who are living in LTC facilities, their families, the staff, and government and policy makers are all interested in providing quality care and quality of life to those persons living within the facility. Culture change is one way for LTC facilities to begin to give decision making to the residents, and to increase quality of life of these elders. There are different culture change models that embrace the concept of person-centered care. No matter which model is chosen, the essence of the change is …

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common human bacterial infections. While UTIs are commonly associated with colonization by Escherichia coli, members of this species also have been found within the bladder of individuals with no lower urinary tract symptoms (no LUTS), also known as asymptomatic bacteriuria. Prior studies have found that both uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains and E. coli isolates that are not associated with UTIs encode for virulence factors. Thus, the reason(s) why E. coli sometimes causes UTI-like symptoms remain(s) elusive. In this study, the genomes of 66 E. coli isolates from adult female …

To conduct a comprehensive analysis of architect's Professional liability, a range of legal areas must be considered so that to identify the possible sources that can give rise to such liability. A general understanding of contract law, tort law and criminal law proves to shed ample light onto these possible sources. Apropos contract law, a basic issue must be recognized and dealt with; i.e. the valid existence of a contractual relationship. Further issues involve; the type of contract adopted the main obligations the architect assumes in terms of contract and the remedies available to the client in case the architect …

The infiltration of immuno-inflammatory cells is one of the earliest and durable steps that lead to atherosclerosis. These cells produce many immune components that act as a double-edged sword in this inflammatory disease. Among these components, we note antimicrobial peptides, including defenses. Defenses are natural cationic peptides of the innate immune system. In Humans, these small peptides have a large antimicrobial spectrum. In addition, they play an important role in both infectious and inflammatory diseases. Our objective was to study the relation between alpha-defenses (DEFA) 1-3 genes expression and cardiovascular risk factors. This objective was built on the hypothesis that …

Architecture was and still a vital need in our life; in very ancient times, it represented a human’s shelter from his surroundings. Architecture then along became the source of the human comfort along with the progress of the civilizations. To achieve that human comfort it was necessary for architecture to react harmoniously with its environment. Therefore, certain considerations like Social, constructional, environmental have been assigned to Architecture. Modern architecture has neglected a natural inevitable consideration: "The Earth's Energy" which is a natural electromagnetic field of the Earth, resulting from of the melted iron in the earth's core. That energy have …

During the second half of the twentieth century, a time that has been noticeable by rapid urbanization of societies, urban environments have become diminished and dysfunctional. Particularly in the practice of forming urban space and in addition, the design of buildings has been allowed to be bloomed, with the lack of both social and environmental responsibility have turned into revolting influences of the plot. With regards to the Urban Environment, sociological consequences will undermine the amenity value of the social environment if the community and the end user are not satisfied by the incompetence to meet the cultural needs. The …

Impoverished areas represent the worst of urban poverty, inequality and intolerable difficulties concerning the quality of life of the wellbeing. A person is impoverished when there is deprivation of strength, vitality and liveliness. Poor societies are conscious of their deficiency of power and independence which subject them to mistreatment; they express about pain brought by their inevitable violation of social norms and inability to fully participate in community life. The concept of livability and its strong link with sense of community is essential; it is the sum of factors that add up the community’s quality of life including the built …

Imagining The Future Of Medicine Through A Lens Of Prejudice: Lessons From The American Past, Neil Nusbaum
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Many healthcare management decisions today, such as those about facility construction, will have impact even decades beyond the traditional 5 or 10 year planning horizon. In order to get some idea of the possibilities and challenges of today’s long range forecasts in healthcare, it is instructive to look at how well similar efforts fared a century ago. Looking in retrospect now, the task of prognostication then was impeded in part by a failure of vision due to prejudicial attitudes of the era.

The active distribution network has a large of distributed generator (DG), therefore, the operation mode and control strategy of the traditional distribution network are not suitable for the active distribution system. The selfhealing control of active distribution network can prevent, diagnose, analyze of the fault and recover power supply. Under this background, a intelligent control terminal is designed for active distribution networks in this paper. Then, the fault isolation, fault phase selection, fault location are designed. Finally, the simulation model is constructed in Matlab/Simulink, and it is shown that the terminal system has a good ability to deal with the …
