Spirituality And Servant-Leadership In Teaching Developmental Mathematics, Dan W. Royer, Amy Baize-Ward
Spirituality And Servant-Leadership In Teaching Developmental Mathematics, Dan W. Royer, Amy Baize-Ward
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The purpose of this article is threefold: (a) to describe how spirituality, conceptually informed by servant-leadership, manifests in our teaching practices, (b) to describe how those practices enact support and empathy, which enables our students to succeed in the technical subject of developmental mathematics, and (c) to report our perceptions of student success. We employed a duoethnographic methodology to respond to a common set of questions, highlighting our similarities and differences. In this exchange we explored the setting of our practice, noting disparities between the two-year institutions where we worked. We concluded our experiences, framed through servant-leadership, and described a …

Aquestion was asked of me by the inimitable Nike Imoru, a North Londoner raised in Nigeria, an exceptional casting director, and the first woman and person of color to gain a tenured position in the Theatre Department at Hull in the UK (when she was only twenty-eight.) The question: What is your understanding of the masculine in America? Nike’s presence is water from a deep well. Her direction elicited the following.

Can supervisors intentionally communicate messages that signal traits of servant-leadership and that influence organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions? Organizational supervisors are in a unique position to influence the employee experience (Myers, Seibold, & Park, 2011). A substantial body of research has documented the ability of a supervisor to influence employee attitudes such as organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions (e.g., Bliss & Fallon, 2003; Brown & Yoshioka, 2003; Epitropaki & Martin, 2005; Fleishman, 1998; Jaskyte, 2003; McColl-Kennedy & Anderson, 2005; Walumbwa & Lawler, 2003). Within organizational behavior research, servant-leadership has emerged as one of the prominent leadership …

Teaching And Learning Servantleadership In The Outdoors, Jerome Gabriel, Sydney Sklar, Jessica Monu
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In the field of outdoor education a great deal of emphasis has been placed on evaluating instructional processes as they are used to develop leadership competencies (Berman & Berman, 2009; Buell, 1981; Gabriel, 2015; Green, 1981; Holladay & Sklar, 2012; Martin, Cashel, Wagstaff, & Breunig, 2006; Priest, 1984, 1986; Raiola & Sugerman, 1999). A limited body of outdoor leadership research has evaluated particular leadership frameworks, such as situational leadership theory (Hersey & Blanchard, 1981; Gabriel, 2015), to determine if leadership practices align with a particular leadership model in question. To advance professional knowledge of outdoor leadership theory and practice, the …

Receptive Communication: A Holistic Orientation For Servant-Leaders, Stephen Michael Tumolo
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Robert Greenleaf’s vision of servant-leadership continues to grow, attracting leaders and organizations who resonate with its values (Ferch, Spears, McFarland, & Carey, 2015). Servantleadership scholarship furthers this vision and supports growth in a variety of ways, including: defining and clarifying the essence of servant-leadership, inspiring those who aspire to serve and lead, operationalizing theory through application to organizational settings, creating measures for servant-leadership, and reviewing and synthesizing literature (van Dierendonck, 2010).

I grew up as white, catholic, American, heterosexual male in a top 5% income household in a safe neighborhood, with some lifealtering, yet not terminal medical issues. Because of this privilege, I was able to focus on my unlimited education to the near exclusion of all else for the first two decades of my life, allowing me to fall in love with learning, with challenging intellectual discussions, with magis, and with cura personalis. Yet as my undergraduate career draws to a close, I find myself questioning how those circumstances affected what I learned, questioning if and how the self-awareness I …

The Idea Of A Citizen: The Role Of Higher Education Institutions In The Development Of Citizens And An Exploration Of Innovative Teaching Techniques To Aid In The Process, Eric Matthew Myers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This work seeks to explain how institutions of higher education and political science educators within those institutions can develop students into citizens. Understanding the role of each (institution, educator, and student) within American democracy is important and the focus of this research. As the roles of each are demarcated, it becomes clear that higher education institutions and their political science educators have a unique ability to nurture students into citizens with a strong sense of civic purpose and understanding.
The subsequent chapters in this work explore the use of experiential education and other innovative teaching methods to determine if students …

Davison, Fabian Leendertz, Michael A. Jarvis, Heinz Feldmann, Bernhard Ehlers
School of Biomedical Sciences
Abstract The multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis; M. natalensis) serves as the main reservoir for the zoonotic arenavirus Lassa virus (LASV), and this has led to considerable investigation into the distribution of LASV and other related arenaviruses in this host species. In contrast to the situation with arenaviruses, the presence of other viruses in M. natalensis remains largely unexplored. In this study, herpesviruses and polyomaviruses were identified and partially characterized by PCR methods, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. In tissues sampled from M. natalensis populations in Côte d'Ivoire and Mali, six new DNA viruses (four betaherpesviruses, one gammaherpesvirus and one polyomavirus) were …

Rethinking Animal Models Of Sepsis – Working Towards Improved Clinical Translation Whilst Integrating The 3rs, Manasi Nandi, Simon K. Jackson, Duncan Macrae, Manu Shankar-Hari, Jordi L. Tremoleda, Elliot Lilley
School of Biomedical Sciences
Abstract Sepsis is a major worldwide healthcare issue with unmet clinical need. Despite extensive animal research in this area, successful clinical translation has been largely unsuccessful. We propose one reason for this is that, sometimes, the experimental question is misdirected or unrealistic expectations are being made of the animal model. As sepsis models can lead to a rapid and substantial suffering – it is essential that we continually review experimental approaches and undertake a full harm:benefit impact assessment for each study. In some instances, this may require refinement of existing sepsis models. In other cases, it may be replacement to …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Fish acute toxicity tests are conducted as part of regulatory hazard identification and risk-assessment packages for industrial chemicals and plant protection products. The aim of these tests is to determine the concentration which would be lethal to 50% of the animals treated. These tests are therefore associated with suffering in the test animals, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development test guideline 203 (fish, acute toxicity) studies are the most widely conducted regulatory vertebrate ecotoxicology tests for prospective chemical safety assessment. There is great scope to apply the 3Rs principles-the reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals-in this area of testing. …
Ethical Perceptions Towards Real-World Use Of Companion Robots With Older People And People With Dementia: Survey Opinions Among Younger Adults, Hannah L. Bradwell, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones
Ethical Perceptions Towards Real-World Use Of Companion Robots With Older People And People With Dementia: Survey Opinions Among Younger Adults, Hannah L. Bradwell, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: Use of companion robots may reduce older people’s depression, loneliness and agitation. This benefit has to be contrasted against possible ethical concerns raised by philosophers in the field around issues such as deceit, infantilisation, reduced human contact and accountability. Research directly assessing prevalence of such concerns among relevant stakeholders, however, remains limited, even though their views clearly have relevance in the debate. For example, any discrepancies between ethicists and stakeholders might in itself be a relevant ethical consideration while concerns perceived by stakeholders might identify immediate barriers to successful implementation. Methods: We surveyed 67 younger adults after they had …

Analysis Of Direct And Indirect Genetic Effects In Fighting Sea Anemones, Sarah M. Lane, Alastair J. Wilson, Mark Briffa
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Abstract Theoretical models of animal contests such as the Hawk-Dove game predict that variation in fighting behavior will persist due to mixed evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) under certain conditions. However, the genetic basis for this variation is poorly understood and a mixed ESS for fighting can be interpreted in more than one way. Specifically, we do not know whether variation in aggression within a population arises from among-individual differences in fixed strategy (determined by an individual’s genotype—direct genetic effects [DGEs]), or from within-individual variation in strategy across contests. Furthermore, as suggested by developments of the original Hawk-Dove model, within-individual variation …
