The Analysis Of Neural Heterogeneity Through Mathematical And Statistical Methods, Kyle Wendling Jan 2020

The Analysis Of Neural Heterogeneity Through Mathematical And Statistical Methods, Kyle Wendling

Theses and Dissertations

Diversity of intrinsic neural attributes and network connections is known to exist in many areas of the brain and is thought to significantly affect neural coding. Recent theoretical and experimental work has argued that in uncoupled networks, coding is most accurate at intermediate levels of heterogeneity. I explore this phenomenon through two distinct approaches: a theoretical mathematical modeling approach and a data-driven statistical modeling approach.

Through the mathematical approach, I examine firing rate heterogeneity in a feedforward network of stochastic neural oscillators utilizing a high-dimensional model. The firing rate heterogeneity stems from two sources: intrinsic (different individual cells) and network …

The Impact Of The Fda Warning On Post-Tonsillectomy Opioid Prescribing In Publicly And Privately Insured Children, Dianna J. Soelberg Jan 2020

The Impact Of The Fda Warning On Post-Tonsillectomy Opioid Prescribing In Publicly And Privately Insured Children, Dianna J. Soelberg

Theses and Dissertations

Due to reports of significant adverse events, the U.S. FDA placed a Boxed Warning on the opioid codeine in February 2013 – contraindicating its use in pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. Studies conducted in privately insured children showed a reduction in codeine prescribing and a slight increase in alterative opioid prescribing following the FDA warning, yet the extent to which the FDA warning impacted prescribing in publicly insured children is unknown. Using a quasi-experimental interrupted time series design, this study evaluated codeine and alternative opioid prescribing before and after the FDA warning in both publicly and privately insured children …

Black Women And Body Image: Implications Of The Racialized Beauty Aesthetic, Rachel L. Boutte Jan 2020

Black Women And Body Image: Implications Of The Racialized Beauty Aesthetic, Rachel L. Boutte

Theses and Dissertations

Black women have the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity relative to any other demographic group in the United States, however current weight management interventions appear least effective for them. Although several hypotheses have been proposed to explain these outcomes, few studies have collected data to evaluate how well they fit the lived experiences of Black women. In particular, the potential roles of body image and body dissatisfaction in the development and maintenance of overweight and obesity in Black women are not well understood. Extant literature largely reports that Black women are inoculated from body dissatisfaction due to cultural factors, …

Exosomes As Systemic Mediators Of Nanotube Induced Neurotoxicity, Christopher G. Canal Jan 2020

Exosomes As Systemic Mediators Of Nanotube Induced Neurotoxicity, Christopher G. Canal

Theses and Dissertations

Extra-pulmonary effects of nanoparticle inhalation have been well documented; however, mechanisms for conveying peripheral bioactivity remain elusive. Recent studies point to indirect molecular mediators shed into the circulation. Protein and lipid alternatives to cytokines or chemokines have been proposed, yet the diversity among responses suggests a broader assemblage of factors. Recently we have proposed proteolytic fragment peptides as an additional source of bioactivity, which interestingly were significantly associated with exosomal proteins after enrichment analysis. Here we tested whether modeled exposure to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) could alter the composition and bioactivity of circulating exosomes. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed by …

Investigation Of Molecular Mechanisms Of Liver Preservation Injury: A Complication Preceding Organ Transplantation, Ria C. Fyffe-Freil Jan 2020

Investigation Of Molecular Mechanisms Of Liver Preservation Injury: A Complication Preceding Organ Transplantation, Ria C. Fyffe-Freil

Theses and Dissertations

Of the over 108,000 American awaiting a life-saving organ transplant today, over 12,000 (11%) of those need a new liver (OPTN, 2020). Last year, only 35% of patients on the waiting list for an organ were transplanted. Improving the quality of marginal organs by preventing or reversing preservation injury could vastly increase the number of transplants performed. Washout of circulating blood during liver procurement with cold University of Wisconsin solution flushes out any endogenous pro-survival signaling molecules. We investigated lysophospholipid (LPL) surface receptors (G-protein coupled receptors for lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine- 1-phosphate (S1P)) and their role in protecting hepatocytes …

Development And Validation Of Predictive Risk And Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis Models To Evaluate Cardiovascular Outcomes Among Cancer Patients, Purva N. Parab

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The objectives of our study were to characterize the study population with cancer and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) both as compared to those without and to build a predictive model using machine learning (ML) algorithms that can predict the risk of CVD in cancer patients. In addition, our objective was also to evaluate characteristics associated with cardiotoxic adverse events of breast cancer therapies and develop a multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) model to conduct benefit-risk assessment of breast cancer therapy regimens. Methods: We used Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) 2005-2015 files along with …

Differential Identification Of Hyperacusis And Misophonia: Implications Of Discrete Decreased Sound Tolerance (Dst) Condition Subtypes, Rachel E. Wallace Jan 2020

Differential Identification Of Hyperacusis And Misophonia: Implications Of Discrete Decreased Sound Tolerance (Dst) Condition Subtypes, Rachel E. Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Hyperacusis and misophonia are two conditions of decreased sound tolerance (DST) studied in the psychological literature due to their association with psychological symptoms and mechanisms. DSTs are differentiated from normal sound sensitivity due to the reported impairment and distress individuals experience. Researchers suggest that DSTs are differentiated by types of sounds and emotional reactions elicited, such that hyperacusis is a fear and pain response to ordinary environmental sounds perceived as uncomfortably loud, and misophonia is an anger and disgust response to human-made sounds, but these distinctions, and associated characteristics, have not been empirically demonstrated. Undergraduate students (N = 1572) …

Ca2+/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Type Ii (Camkii) Regulates Histone Methylation To Promote Zebrafish Hematopoietic Stem Cell Specification, Sanyam Patel Jan 2020

Ca2+/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Type Ii (Camkii) Regulates Histone Methylation To Promote Zebrafish Hematopoietic Stem Cell Specification, Sanyam Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Ca2+/calmodulin dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is an important signaling molecule involved in many developmental processes. This project aims to understand the role of CaMKII in specification of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in zebrafish. HSCs undergo hematopoiesis to specify all cells that constitute blood. The process of hematopoiesis along with the specification of hematopoietic stem cells is conserved in vertebrates. CaMKII is expressed in tissues important for HSC specification, including the somites, notochord, and dorsal aorta. The dorsal aorta is the site of HSC specification in zebrafish. Injection of camk2g1 translational blocking antisense oligonucleotides (MO) or Cas9 guide …

Development Of A Screening Assay For Type Iii Secretion System Inhibitors And High Throughput Screening Campaign Of Inhibitors Of Prp Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Heather A. Pendergrass Jan 2020

Development Of A Screening Assay For Type Iii Secretion System Inhibitors And High Throughput Screening Campaign Of Inhibitors Of Prp Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Heather A. Pendergrass

Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotics inhibit the growth or survival of bacteria by targeting their essential functions.1 Due to weaknesses in traditional antibiotics and the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes, virulence factors are being targeted for therapeutic treatment of bacterial infection.2 We have developed an assay to quantify and observe type III secretion system (T3SS) activity. The type III secretion system (T3SS) is a virulence factor present in some Gram-negative pathogens including enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EPEC and EHEC, respectively),3 and others.4–9 The T3SS between EPEC and EHEC are highly conserved and share over 90% sequence identity with …

The Independence Effects Of Gravitational And Inertial Forces On Gait Transitions In Humans, Nathan Frakes Jan 2020

The Independence Effects Of Gravitational And Inertial Forces On Gait Transitions In Humans, Nathan Frakes

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Dynamic Similarity hypothesis suggests gravitational and inertial forces plays a role in determining preferred transition speed (PTS) for walk to run transitions (WRT) and run to walk transitions (RWT), and that humans prefer to transition gait when the ratio of inertial force (IF) to gravitational force (GF) (i.e. Froude #) is ~0.5. Purpose: To investigate the effect of gravitational and inertial forces on PTS, Froude # (Fr) and kinematics for both WRT and RWT. Methods: Twelve healthy adults (9 M, 3 F) performed WRT and RWT trials on a treadmill across seven combinations of altered body weight (BW) and …

Habitat Use And Prey Selection By Mountain Lions In An Altered Sagebrush Steppe Environment, Jonathan Ewanyk Jan 2020

Habitat Use And Prey Selection By Mountain Lions In An Altered Sagebrush Steppe Environment, Jonathan Ewanyk

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Throughout the American West there is an increasing trend of encroachment of woody vegetation on previously open sagebrush steppe habitat. The Modoc Plateau in northeastern California has not been excluded from this encroachment trend and has seen an increase in western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) densities, likely as a result of long-term fire suppression. Mountain lions (Puma concolor) have not previously been studied on the Modoc Plateau, and there is potential for an increase in cover due to juniper encroachment to benefit the hunting behavior of lions. To better understand if the presence of cover is being …

Efficacy Of Forest Restoration Treatments Across A 40-Year Chronosequence At Redwood National Park, Kevin Soland Jan 2020

Efficacy Of Forest Restoration Treatments Across A 40-Year Chronosequence At Redwood National Park, Kevin Soland

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Following 20th century logging, much of the natural coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) range consists of dense second-growth stands with slow tree growth and low biodiversity. There is a landscape-scale effort in much of coastal northern California to increase tree growth rates and ecosystem biodiversity via thinning treatments, thereby hopefully accelerating the development of old-growth forest characteristics. Redwood National Park (RNP) has been experimenting with thinning in these forest types since the 1970s. Given the interesting history of logging and restoration in RNP and the future plans for widespread thinning in this region, my thesis examined the effects …

Changing Seasons Of Resistance: Impacts Of Settler Colonialism And Climate Change In Indigenous Worlds, Elizabeth Jackson Jan 2020

Changing Seasons Of Resistance: Impacts Of Settler Colonialism And Climate Change In Indigenous Worlds, Elizabeth Jackson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This paper looks at the relationship between neoliberal capitalism, genocide, the biopolitics of settler colonialism and the impacts of climate change on the cultures and traditional lifeways of Indigenous communities. It also explores Indigenous modes and methods of adaptation and resilience. Climate Change is almost certainly the most urgent social problem in the history of human life on planet Earth. Many Indigenous people are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to marginalization and their commitment to land-based practices. Using in depth interviews with Indigenous Peoples, primarily from the Pacific Northwest, and the analysis of existing literature, this …

A Tale Of Two Cervids: Habitat Selection And Spatial Ecology Of Roosevelt And Tule Elk In California, Adam S. Mohr Jan 2020

A Tale Of Two Cervids: Habitat Selection And Spatial Ecology Of Roosevelt And Tule Elk In California, Adam S. Mohr

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

California’s Roosevelt (Cervus canadensis rooseveltii) and tule elk (C. c. nannodes) populations have experienced a remarkable recovery after over-hunting and habitat loss nearly extirpated them from the state. Greater clarity of Roosevelt and tule elk habitat selection patterns would help managers continue to effectively support the recovery of these two iconic subspecies. As the manner in which elk populations balance their competing resource needs is unique to each population (Skovlin et al. 2002), I have examined Roosevelt and tule elk habitat selection patterns in separate analyses and present these results in independent chapters. In both cases, …

Changes In Prey Mortality: The Efects Of Multiple Predators And Temperature On California Mussels, Wesley Hull Jan 2020

Changes In Prey Mortality: The Efects Of Multiple Predators And Temperature On California Mussels, Wesley Hull

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Organisms serve as prey to a variety of predators within natural systems, detecting threats through physical and chemical means. While predator feeding behavior is also affected by the presence of other predators, it is unclear whether differing modes of detection have similar effects on predator feeding behavior. In rocky intertidal zones in northern California, the California mussel (Mytilus californianus) is a competitively dominant foundation species consumed by a variety of predators. I quantified the individual and combined effects of ochre star (Pisaster ochraceus) and rock crab (Romaleon antennarium) predation on mussels by implementing mussel …

Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Dispersal And Life History Variations Among Humboldt Bay Watersheds, Madison J. Halloran Jan 2020

Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Dispersal And Life History Variations Among Humboldt Bay Watersheds, Madison J. Halloran

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The decline of Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in California is the result of various anthropogenic effects across the landscape, affecting all stages of their anadromous life history. Monitoring a subset of the remaining populations is essential to evaluate the success of management actions and develop new restoration projects. Defining the appropriate spatial scale for this monitoring and restoration depends on the frequency and extent of dispersal of individuals across watershed boundaries. Coho Salmon life-cycle monitoring projects in California estimate the abundance of juveniles and adults over time in selected focal watersheds. If individuals frequently enter or leave the …

Apparent Survival Of Snowy Plovers Varies Across Years And Between Sexes In Coastal Northern California, Justin A. Windsor Jan 2020

Apparent Survival Of Snowy Plovers Varies Across Years And Between Sexes In Coastal Northern California, Justin A. Windsor

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Adult survival is one of the most influential vital rates affecting population growth of iteroparous organisms. Survival often varies annually due to environmental stochasticity. However, drastic variations in annual adult survival rates can have overwhelmingly negative impacts on population viability and growth. In many wild avian populations, adult survival varies between sexes and may owe to unequal risks associated with reproductive roles or predation; this is particularly true among shorebirds. I used mark-resight data from a 19-year study of Western Snowy Plovers (Charadrius nivosus nivosus) in coastal northern California to investigate sex-specific apparent survival of the adult population …

Phylogenetic And Population Genetic Analysis Of The Humboldt's Flying Squirrel Using High-Throughput Sequencing Data, Stella Chi Yuan Jan 2020

Phylogenetic And Population Genetic Analysis Of The Humboldt's Flying Squirrel Using High-Throughput Sequencing Data, Stella Chi Yuan

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The intraspecific genetic variation and diversity within the Humboldt’s flying squirrel (Glaucomys oregonensis) has not yet been characterized despite its elevation to full species in 2017. The San Bernardino flying squirrel (G. o. californicus) is thought to be the southernmost population of G. oregonensis and is restricted to the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains in California, but recent surveys indicate they have been extirpated from the latter locality. In order to provide baseline genetic data across the geographic range of G. oregonensis, I had the following objectives: 1) investigate the intraspecific molecular variation in …

Knemidokoptes Mites And Their Effects On The Gripping Position Of Steller’S Jay Feet, Wade M. Burris Jan 2020

Knemidokoptes Mites And Their Effects On The Gripping Position Of Steller’S Jay Feet, Wade M. Burris

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Steller’s jays (Cyanocitta stelleri) with swollen legs and feet resembling the signs of scaly leg have been commonly seen around Arcata, California, USA. These signs are thought to be caused by knemidokoptic mites, a group of parasites specialized at exploiting a range of avian hosts. I compared the gripping position in the feet of jays with variable signs of this condition as an index of their ability to perch, confirmed the presence of mites and identified them to the nearest species using genetic analysis, and compared the relatedness of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene between mites …

Growth Of Juvenile Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens) Fed Different Seaweed-Based Diets, Quinn C. Wulffson Jan 2020

Growth Of Juvenile Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens) Fed Different Seaweed-Based Diets, Quinn C. Wulffson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The rise of abalone aquaculture has mitigated most of the global demand placed on wild stocks of abalone; however, the current production of abalone relies heavily on naturally harvested kelp. The continued reliance on wild kelp as a feed source further contributes to the disappearance of kelp forests throughout coastal ecosystems. This study aims to better understand how juvenile red abalone Haliotis rufescens grow and utilize nutrients from three diets: a control diet of naturally harvested bull kelp Nereocystis luetkeana, a formulated commercial diet (ABKelp®), and Pacific dulse Palmaria mollis produced using Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Juvenile …

Does Testosterone Affect Sexist Attitudes In Men? A Simulated Analysis, Steven R. Bowman Jan 2020

Does Testosterone Affect Sexist Attitudes In Men? A Simulated Analysis, Steven R. Bowman

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Sexism continues to negatively affect the lives of women across many cultures and modern societies. Although sexism has a damaging effect on people overall, women are disproportionately affected. Previous research on the topic generally explores attitudes, culture, socioeconomic status, sexual and violent crime census data, and developmental factors, but there is a lack of research investigating potential links among biological factors, such as hormone levels, and sexist attitudes. The present study used simulated data to simulate a study investigating the relationship between endogenous testosterone, cognitive aggression, and sexist attitudes. Using the faux, pwr2ppl, and ProcessR packages in R Studio open-source …

The Effects Of Feral Cat Removal On Rat Abundance In An Insular, Tropical Ecosystem, Douglas A. Page Jan 2020

The Effects Of Feral Cat Removal On Rat Abundance In An Insular, Tropical Ecosystem, Douglas A. Page

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The colonization by rats (Rattus spp.) and cats (Felis catus) on islands are known to contribute to the decline of native birds. On the island of Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, cats are being lethally removed to conserve two endangered bird species. Although cats are controlled to reduce impacts on birds, they can also prey heavily on sympatric rats. Of euthanized feral cats on Rota, 60% had ≥1 rat in the stomach. Predation by cats could be a mechanism of top-down control of rats. Removing feral cats may reduce the magnitude of that control, leading …

An Ecomorphological Analysis Of Locomotion In Larvae And Neotenes Of Two Salamander Species: Dicamptodon Tenebrosus (Stream-Type) And Ambystoma Gracile (Pond-Type), Ethan Hardister Snee Jan 2020

An Ecomorphological Analysis Of Locomotion In Larvae And Neotenes Of Two Salamander Species: Dicamptodon Tenebrosus (Stream-Type) And Ambystoma Gracile (Pond-Type), Ethan Hardister Snee

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Morphology is the physical expression of a species’ evolutionary history and adaptation to its environment and as such is tied to ecology. Salamander larvae have historically been separated into "pond-type" and "stream-type" groups based on their morphology, however no studies have been performed quantifying the relationship between morphology and ecology. In this study I utilized in-situ behavioral observations, morphological measurements, and in-lab performance tests of Dicamptodon tenebrosus (stream-type) and Ambystoma gracile (pond-type) to examine the relationship between salamander larval morphology and ecology. In the field, behavior was video recorded during nighttime surveys; afterwards animals were captured and limb measurements were …

Aspen Growth Response In The Presence Of Inter-Annual Climate Fluctuation And Disturbance In The Lake Tahoe Basin, Keath K. Sakihara Jan 2020

Aspen Growth Response In The Presence Of Inter-Annual Climate Fluctuation And Disturbance In The Lake Tahoe Basin, Keath K. Sakihara

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the western US, aspen forests tend to be small and rare, but have great ecological importance. There is much interest and concern over how aspen in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of the western USA will respond to a changing climate and future disturbances. Impacts from climate change create stress on aspen trees that further compound threats to aspen communities. This analysis assessed the radial growth response of aspen under previously recorded climate conditions to better understand how measurable climate variables affect aspen growth. Along with aspen’s growth response to climate, this analysis also assessed the growth response of aspen …

Evaluation Of 1-D And 2-D Hydraulic Models For Designing And Assessing Fullspan Stream Crossings, Alyssa Sachiko Virgil Jan 2020

Evaluation Of 1-D And 2-D Hydraulic Models For Designing And Assessing Fullspan Stream Crossings, Alyssa Sachiko Virgil

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This project compared design decisions and hydraulic analyses of full-span stream crossings using one- and two-dimensional (1-D and 2-D) hydraulic models. The project was initiated by the California Department of Transportation’s interest in moving from 1-D to 2-D hydraulic modeling and by the Federal Highways Administration’s support for adopting SRH-2D (Sedimentation and River Hydraulics-2D developed by the US Bureau of Reclamation) in Aquaveo, LLC’s Surface-water Modeling System as their standard design model. Two-dimensional hydraulic models calculate more detailed water depths and velocities than 1-D models, which can better identify fish passage conditions, areas of potential scour or deposition, and aquatic …

Cuteness As A Prime To Enhance Emotional Recognition, Andrew Diaz Jan 2020

Cuteness As A Prime To Enhance Emotional Recognition, Andrew Diaz

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The ability to recognize emotional expressions has important implications for survival and cooperation. Failing to recognize emotions indicative of some form of threat (anger, fear, disgust) may be particularly costly given these emotional expressions communicate a potential source of danger in the environment. Previous studies have shown that people tend to recognize threatening emotions faster and more accurately than non-threatening emotions. Infantile characteristics (kindchenschema) readily capture the attention of adults and have been shown to influence a variety of behaviors associated with caretaking; viewing cute stimuli increases behavioral carefulness on various visual and motor tasks. The current study …

Recolonization Potential For Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) In Tributaries To The Klamath River After Dam Removal, Max M. Ramos Jan 2020

Recolonization Potential For Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) In Tributaries To The Klamath River After Dam Removal, Max M. Ramos

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Removal of four major dams on the Klamath River is scheduled to begin in 2023, restoring access to greater than 50 km of historic mainstem habitat for coho salmon. However, mainstem habitat may not be suitable for juvenile coho salmon due to elevated water temperatures and high concentrations of infectious myxospores in the summer and fast water velocities in the winter. Small, cooler tributaries can provide essential habitat for escape from deleterious conditions in the mainstem Klamath River. I used temperature and other physical features of six tributaries to the Klamath River above Iron Gate Dam to assess their capacity …

Corporate Purpose In A Populist Era, Stephen M. Bainbridge Jan 2020

Corporate Purpose In A Populist Era, Stephen M. Bainbridge

Nebraska Law Review

In the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and similar developments in parts of Europe, commentators widely acknowledged the rise of populist movements on both the right and left of the political spectrum that were deeply suspicious of big business. This development potentially has important implications for the law and practice of corporate purpose.

Left-of-center corporate social responsibility campaigners have long advocated the use of “boycotts, shareholder activism, negative publicity, and so on” to pressure corporate managers to act in ways those campaigners deem socially responsible. Right-of-center populists could use the same tactics to induce corporate directors to make …
