The Cardiovascular Response To Acute Hypoxic Conditions In Danio Rerio, Bryce Fetterman
The Cardiovascular Response To Acute Hypoxic Conditions In Danio Rerio, Bryce Fetterman
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
There are many fish that can withstand hypoxia levels. One in particular is the zebrafish (Danio rerio). The zebrafish is a small-sized, Cyprinid teleost fish, and has been used in a laboratory setting for many reasons. A few reasons being that they are widely available, easy to care for, and the cost for these fish are very low. There are various reasons why these fish are used as a model. One main reason is because their cardiovascular system is one of the first developing organs. This allows for better resolution when studying the cardiovascular system. The purpose of …

Oxidative Stress Analysis Of Placental Tissue In The Rupp Pregnant Rat, Natalie Ganios
Oxidative Stress Analysis Of Placental Tissue In The Rupp Pregnant Rat, Natalie Ganios
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Preeclampsia is a disease associated with a vasoconstrictive phenotype due to disrupted signaling in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) relaxation pathway. The purpose of these studies is to determine the level of oxidative damage that is occurring in the placenta of the reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rat, which serves as a common model for preeclampsia. RUPP and SHAM placenta tissue will be examined for oxidative stress as an indicator of tissue damage associated with the pathologically induced ischemia. Oxidative stress in the placental tissue will be measured by performing the following oxidative stress assays: 8-isoprostane test, TBARS assay, …

Digital abuse is on the rise. People increasingly use technology to perpetrate and exacerbate abusive conduct like stalking and harassment, manipulating digital tools to control and harm their victims. By some accounts, 95% of domestic-abuse cases involve technology, while a sizeable chunk of the U.S. population now admits to having suffered or perpetrated serious abuse online. To make matters worse, people often trivialize digital abuse or underestimate its prevalence. Even among those who do appreciate its severity, there remains ample disagreement about how to address it.
Although law can be a powerful tool to regulate digital abuse, legal responses are …

For a decade and a half, Facebook has dominated the landscape of digital social networks, becoming one of the most powerful arbiters of online speech. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, over two billion users leverage the platform to post, share, discuss, react to, and access content from all over the globe. Through a system of semipublic rules called “Community Standards,” Facebook has created a body of “laws” and a system of governance that dictate what users may say on the platform. In recent years, as this intricately built system to dispatch the company’s immense private power over …
Economic Analysis Of Jewish Law, Keith Sharfman
Economic Analysis Of Jewish Law, Keith Sharfman
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
Like any legal system, Jewish law is amenable to economic analysis, both positive and normative. Economic analysis can help to explain how and why the various rules comprising Jewish law arose and persisted over time. It also can facilitate a direct assessment of Jewish law on the merits. In practice, however, it is a mainly positive economic analysis of Jewish law that scholars have emphasized, while normative analysis has, for the most part, been underemphasized.
Take, for example, the application of law and economics to biblical exegesis. The legal-economic work in this field has been largely descriptive rather than …
Real Insider Trading, Michael A. Perino
Real Insider Trading, Michael A. Perino
Faculty Publications
In popular rhetoric, insider trading cases are about leveling the playing field between elite market participants and ordinary investors. Academic critiques vary. Some depict an untethered insider trading doctrine that enforcers use to expand their power and enhance their discretion. Others see enforcers beset with agency cost problems who bring predominantly simple, easily resolved cases to create the veneer of vigorous enforcement. The debate has, to this point, been based mostly on anecdote and conjecture rather than empirical evidence. This Article addresses that gap by collecting extensive data on 465 individual defendants in civil, criminal, and administrative actions to assess …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) which develops inside the grain, is an aggressive pest of stored grains. Here, we evaluated the efficiency of diatomaceous earth (DE), Diatomita CI/325 CX, and dolomite (DOL), Dolomita Dr. Kanyo, against S. zeamais reared on corn under laboratory conditions and observed external alterations on treated insects using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Insects treated with both DE and DOL were impregnated with particles on the body surface, and they showed 100% mortality after 10 days of exposure. Damages caused by inert dusts may have contributed to dehydration and desiccation, consequently, leading insects to death. Thus, …
Improving Kentucky's Winter Wheat And Double Crop Soybean Rotation, Katherine Susan Rod
Improving Kentucky's Winter Wheat And Double Crop Soybean Rotation, Katherine Susan Rod
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The winter wheat double crop soybean rotation is an economically viable rotation for Kentucky farmers. Recent decreases in commodity prices has warranted the need to evaluate intensive management practices that can increase yields and profitability in this crop rotation. There were three goals of this dissertation: 1.) identify management practices that would decrease deoxynivalenol (DON) in harvested wheat grain and increase wheat heading and anthesis uniformity, 2.) evaluate double crop soybean planting timing and identify intensive management practices to increase seed yield, and 3.) determine the profitability of these management options. These studies were conducted in Princeton KY between 2016 …
Glyphosate Plus Dicamba Spray Solution Deposition, Coverage, And Efficacy As Influenced By Spray Nozzle Design And Weed Density, Madison Dru Kramer
Glyphosate Plus Dicamba Spray Solution Deposition, Coverage, And Efficacy As Influenced By Spray Nozzle Design And Weed Density, Madison Dru Kramer
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Dicamba injury to sensitive soybean and other broadleaf crops due to drift is a major issue and label restrictions have been created to mitigate dicamba drift. One restriction is the mandated use of low drift nozzles to spray dicamba; these nozzles produce larger droplets and minimize the production of driftable fines. Experiments were conducted to evaluate herbicide coverage, deposition, and efficacy. Three spray nozzle designs and different weed densities were the main factors in the analysis. Dicamba plus glyphosate was applied to 5 to 10 cm tall weeds with a Turbo TeeJet (TT11005) nozzle and two drift reduction nozzles approved …
The Current Role Of The Environment In Reinforcing Acts Of Domestic Terrorism: How Fear Of A Climate Change Apocalypse May Strengthen Right-Wing Hate Groups, Hope M. Babcock
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Right-wing extremist organizations, like white supremacists and nativists, are using the environment as a rallying cry to gain supporters of their anti-social agendas. Apocalyptic rhetoric about climate change and the lack of action to combat it has frightened some people into accepting the simplistic, violent worldview of these groups. Although the violence is new, the coupling of racism and anti-immigration rants with environmental goals is not—it is part of our cultural history. This Article provides some background on the threats of environmental and domestic terrorism facing our nation and describes how the present-day rhetoric of fear of an environmental Armageddon …
Robert F. Kennedy And The Attorney General's Referral Authority: A Blueprint For The Biden Administration, Patrick J. Glen
Robert F. Kennedy And The Attorney General's Referral Authority: A Blueprint For The Biden Administration, Patrick J. Glen
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
For nearly four years, the Trump Administration’s use of the Attorney General’s referral authority has been criticized by the legal left on both substantive and procedural grounds. With the advent of the Biden Administration, however, use of the authority for liberal ends deserves serious consideration. To conclude otherwise would be throwing the baby out with the bath water. This article argues that the referral authority can be used for liberal constructions of the immigration laws, and that the perfect model for the incoming administration is former Attorney General Robert Kennedy and his use of the authority for just such ends. …

Hsp90 Inhibition And Modulation Of The Proteome: Therapeutical Implications For Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (Ipf), Ruben Manuel Luciano Colunga Biancatelli, Pavel Solopov, Betsy Gregory, John D. Catravas
Bioelectrics Publications
Idiopathic Pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a catastrophic disease with poor outcomes and limited pharmacological approaches. Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) has been recently involved in the wound-healing pathological response that leads to collagen deposition in patients with IPF and its inhibition represents an exciting drug target against the development of pulmonary fibrosis. Under physiological conditions, HSP90 guarantees proteostasis through the refolding of damaged proteins and the degradation of irreversibly damaged ones. Additionally, its inhibition, by specific HSP90 inhibitors (e.g., 17 AAG, 17 DAG, and AUY-922) has proven beneficial in different preclinical models of human disease. HSP90 inhibition modulates a complex …

Polymer Chemistry Education To Increase Student Awareness Of Plastic Pervasiveness And Environmental Impact, Victoria Hill
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A polymer-pollution-focused laboratory sequence was written to teach general chemistry concepts in a course for pre-service elementary teachers. Students experienced the difficulties related to polymer pollution clean-up and made bio-based materials to see possible alternatives. In order to determine whether this laboratory sequence changed student understanding of the importance of polymers and their environmental impact, student opinions were gathered with pre/post-course sequence surveys, observations, post-laboratory surveys, and focus group interviews. These same data collection methods were also used to determine the likelihood that the pre-service elementary teachers would teach these polymer and environmental laboratories or their concepts in the future. …
Rapid Adaptation To Changing Mechanical Load By Ordered Recruitment Of Identified Motor Neurons, Hillel J. Chiel
Rapid Adaptation To Changing Mechanical Load By Ordered Recruitment Of Identified Motor Neurons, Hillel J. Chiel
Faculty Scholarship
As they interact with their environment and encounter challenges, animals adjust their behavior on a moment-to-moment basis to maintain task fitness. This dynamic process of adaptive motor control occurs in the nervous system, but an understanding of the biomechanics of the body is essential to properly interpret the behavioral outcomes. To study how animals respond to changing task conditions, we used a model system in which the functional roles of identified neurons and the relevant biomechanics are well understood and can be studied in intact behaving animals: feeding in the marine mollusc Aplysia. We monitored the motor neuronal output of …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Since excreted feed nitrogen is bio-transformed efficiently in a fully functional mixotrophic biofloc technology production system, re-using this biofloc water over multiple production cycles should be beneficial. The present study, conducted in an outdoor biofloc technology production system, evaluated impacts on fish production characteristics and mineral status, common microbial off-flavors, and water quality dynamics for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) reared in one-year-old waters with low or high total suspended solids used previously for two consecutive catfish biofloc studies or in unused (new) water. Total suspended solids were maintained at 300 to 400 mg/L in the unused and low …

Physiology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Genesis of acquired epilepsy includes transformations spanning genetic-to- network-level modifications, disrupting the regional excitatory/inhibitory balance. Methodology concurrently tracking changes at multiple levels is lacking. Here, viral vectors are used to differentially express two opsin proteins in neuronal populations within dentate gyrus (DG) of hippocampus. When activated, these opsins induced excitatory or inhibitory neural output that differentially affected neural networks and epileptogenesis. In vivo measures included behavioral observation coupled to real-time measures of regional glutamate flux using ceramic-based amperometric microelectrode arrays (MEAs).
RESULTS: Using MEA technology, phasic increases of extracellular glutamate were recorded immediately upon application of blue light/488 nm …

The Construction And Analysis Of Dream Metaphors From The Standpoint Of Co-Creative Dream Theory, Gregory Scott Sparrow
The Construction And Analysis Of Dream Metaphors From The Standpoint Of Co-Creative Dream Theory, Gregory Scott Sparrow
Counseling Faculty Publications
Co-creative dream theory posits that the dream is co-determined through the reciprocal interplay between the witnessing dream ego and the emergent content. Consequently, the resulting dream can be seen as one of many contingent outcomes based on the dreamer’s range of response through the course of the dream, as well as the broad constraints of underlying domains that account for the nature and thrust of the emergent content. From this relational view of the dream, the visual imagery is not the content itself, but rather the “mutable interface” (Sparrow, 2013) between the dream ego and the emergent content. The purpose …

Formal, government-to-government Consultation between sovereign nations is a process of continuous relationship-building, a partnership and an agreement made with all points-of-view included in the process, with results that have the fingerprint of all nations involved evident. The Federal Government is obligated to work with Federally-recognized Tribes as sovereign nations in matters that have or will impact each Nation’s people and places (reservations, treaty-protected areas)—a process legally known as Consultation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as a federal agency, must uphold the Federal Trust responsibility which includes the act of Consulting with Federally-recognized Tribes on matters involving human health and the …

Tending To The Tapestry: An Ecofeminist Interpretation Of Women Farmer-Artists' Stories, Aubrey Pongluelert
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
There is a disconnect in Western academia, between classroom conversations concerning the impact of environmental degradation on rural communities, and engagement with those communities whom we are discussing. Those working in environmental studies are confronted with the question of how to effectively communicate the concerns addressed by the field in ways which are accessible to, and engage broader audiences. Creative languages such as the visual arts, storytelling, and music are invaluable tools in this task because they offer accessible and culturally relevant means of conveying ideas, perspectives, and experiences. This project examines the ways in which these creative languages contribute …
