Using Preschool To Close The Socioeconomic Math Achievement Gap, Sydney King Jan 2020

Using Preschool To Close The Socioeconomic Math Achievement Gap, Sydney King

Senior Honors Theses

Socioeconomic status (SES) heavily influences students’ academic performance, creating an achievement gap in core subjects like reading and mathematics. This thesis will describe the socioeconomic achievement gap as it relates to mathematics specifically, discuss the problem’s causes, and propose how preschool programs should be implemented more prevalently as a solution to close the gap. Children with low socioeconomic statuses enter school with lower math proficiency due to their limited math exposure in their early years and the quality of their home learning environments. This thesis will propose an expansion of preschool programs as a solution to this problem to help …

Coculture Model Of Blood-Brain Barrier On Electrospun Nanofibers, Mustafa Görkem Özyurt, Ece Bayir, Şule Doğan, Şükrü Öztürk, Ayli̇n Şendemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Biology

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a control mechanism that limits the diffusion of many substances to the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we designed an in-vitro 3-dimensional BBB system to obtain a fast and reliable model to mimic drug delivery characteristics of the CNS. A support membrane of polycaprolactone nanofiber surfaces was prepared using electrospinning. After confirming the fiber morphology and size, endothelial cells (HUVEC) and glial cells were cultured on either side of this membrane. The model's similarity to in vivo physiology was tested with a home-designed transmembrane resistance (TR) device, with positive and negative control molecules. …

Akt-Mediated Phosphorylation Of Twist1 Is Essential For Breast Cancer Cell Metastasis, Mustafa Gökhan Ertosun, Suray Pehli̇vanoğlu, Sayra Di̇lmaç, Gamze Tanriöver, Osman Ni̇dai̇ Özeş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Previously, it was shown that human TWIST1 (basic helix-loop-helix (b-HLH) is phosphorylated by Akt kinase at S42, T121, and S123. To show in vivo effect of these phosphorylations, we created mouse TWIST1 expression vector and converted the codons of S42, T125, and S127 to unphosphorylatable alanine and phosphorylation mimicking Glutamic acid. We hypothesized that alanine mutants would inhibit the metastatic ability of 4T1 cells while glutamic acid mutants would convert nonmetastatic 67NR cells into metastatic phenotype. To confirm this hypothesis, we created metastatic 4T1 and nonmetastatic 67NR cells expressing alanine mutants and glutamic acid mutants mouse TWIST1, respectively. Then, we …

Simultaneous Production Of Alpha And Beta Amylase Enzymes Using Separate Gene Bearing Recombinant Vectors In The Same Escherichia Coli Cells, Di̇lek Özcan Yardim, Hi̇kmet Murat Si̇pahi̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present study describes the simultaneous expression of thermostable industrial alpha (α) and beta (ß) amylase enzymes that have been used widely in starch industry. Genomic DNA of Bacillus stearothermophilus DSM 22 strain for α amylase and, Thermoanaerobacterium (Clostridium) thermosulfurogenes DSM 2229 strain for ß amylase were used as gene sources. Both genes were ligated into pETDuet-1 expression vector separately and resulting recombinant vectors were transformed into Escherichia coli BL21 competent cells by electroporation. The cells were first transformed by pETDuet-1/ αAmy recombinant plasmid, then the competent cells carrying this plasmid were prepared for the transformation of pETDuet-1/ ßAmy plasmid. …

Impeachable Speech, Katherine Shaw Jan 2020

Impeachable Speech, Katherine Shaw

Emory Law Journal

Rhetoric is both an important source of presidential power and a key tool of presidential governance. For at least a century, the bully pulpit has amplified presidential power and authority, with significant consequences for the separation of powers and the constitutional order more broadly. Although the power of presidential rhetoric is a familiar feature of the contemporary legal and political landscape, far less understood are the constraints upon presidential rhetoric that exist within our system. Impeachment, of course, is one of the most important constitutional constraints on the president. And so, in the wake of the fourth major presidential impeachment …

The iPBS (inter-primer binding site) markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity of the genotypes. Polymorphism ratio was identified as 100% in all primers. Twenty-seven primers were studied and number of alleles in primers varied between 13?69 (with an average value of 37.14). According to cluster analysis based on iPBS data, genotypes were divided into 2 groups. Polymorphic information content (PIC) values varied between …

Tekison Cave: A Case Study In Archaeological Collection Rehabilitation And Accessibility, Jackey Anderson Jan 2020

Tekison Cave: A Case Study In Archaeological Collection Rehabilitation And Accessibility, Jackey Anderson

All Master's Theses

Tekison Cave is a Kittitas County, Washington, archaeological site that was excavated by avocational archaeologists in the 1970s. Part of the collection (previously never cataloged or professionally analyzed), is housed at CWU on behalf of the landowners, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Additionally, the avocational archaeologists still possess some artifacts that they loaned to the university. The collection was rehabilitated and a recommended access policy was created, by collaborating with stakeholders: WDFW, one of the original excavators, and Native American descendant communities. For the rehabilitation, 661 bags and more than 4,406 objects were organized, cataloged, and housed …

Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Land Use And Water Quality In Kittitas County, Wa, Lindsay Schulz Jan 2020

Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Land Use And Water Quality In Kittitas County, Wa, Lindsay Schulz

All Master's Theses

Water in Kittitas County is extremely valuable since it supports farming, recreation, and cultural activities, as well as environmental processes and a diversity of biological life while providing many ecosystem services. However, land conversions required by agricultural and urban land uses can negatively impact water quality and the biological function of the stream. I studied how forested, agricultural, and urban land use affect six streams. Fourteen sites were sampled, once each in July, August, and September 2019. Land use was calculated as a percentage of forested, agricultural, and urban land use within a 100-m buffer of the stream, upstream of …

N‑Linked Glycosylation Prevents Deamidation Of Glycopeptide And Glycoprotein, Joshua Zhu, Ding Liu, Vy P. Tran, Zhigang Wu, Kuan Jiang, He Zhu, Jiabin Zhang, Christopher Gibbons, Bingzhong Xue, Hang Shi, Peng George Wang

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Deamidation has been recognized as a common spontaneous pathway of protein degradation and a prevalent concern in the pharmaceutical industry; deamidation caused the reduction of protein/peptide drug efficacy and shelf life in several cases. More importantly, deamidation of physiological proteins is related to several human diseases and considered a "timer" for the diseases. N-linked glycosylation has a variety of significant biological functions, and it interestingly occurs right on the deamidation site-asparagine. It has been perceived that N-glycosylation could prevent deamidation, but experimental support is still lacking for clearly understanding the role of N-glycosylation on deamidation. Our results presented that deamidation …

Glaciernet: A Deep-Learning Approach For Debris-Covered Glacier Mapping, Zhiyuan Xie, Umesh K. Haritashya, Vijayan K. Asari, Brennan W. Young, Michael P. Bishop, Jeffrey S. Kargel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Rising global temperatures over the past decades is directly affecting glacier dynamics. To understand glacier fluctuations and document regional glacier-state trends, glacier-boundary detection is necessary. Debris-covered glacier (DCG) mapping, however, is notoriously difficult using conventional geospatial technology methods. Therefore, in this research for automated DCG mapping, we evaluate the utility of a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a deep learning feed-forward neural network. The CNN inputs include Landsat satellite images, an Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model (DEM) and DEM-derived land-surface parameters. Our CNN based deep-learning approach named GlacierNet was designed by appropriately choosing the type, number …

Ai-Generated Fashion Designs: Who Or What Owns The Goods?, Caen A. Dennis Jan 2020

Ai-Generated Fashion Designs: Who Or What Owns The Goods?, Caen A. Dennis

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

As artificial intelligence (“AI”) becomes an increasingly prevalent tool in a plethora of industries in today’s society, analyzing the potential legal implications attached to AI-generated works is becoming more popular. One of the industries impacted by AI is fashion. AI tools and devices are currently being used in the fashion industry to create fashion models, fabric designs, and clothing. An AI device’s ability to generate fashion designs raises the question of who will own the copyrights of the fashion designs. Will it be the fashion designer who hires or contracts with the AI device programmer? Will it be the programmer? …

Substantial Similarity And Junk Science: Reconstructing The Test Of Copyright Infringement, Robert F. Helfing Jan 2020

Substantial Similarity And Junk Science: Reconstructing The Test Of Copyright Infringement, Robert F. Helfing

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

As the standard of copyright infringement, “substantial similarity” is an ambiguous concept that produces unpredictable decisions often inimical to the purposes of copyright law. This Article explains the deficiencies of infringement tests based upon that standard. It also provides an innovative interpretation of copyright protection and presents a new test of infringement designed to directly determine whether that protection has been violated.

The Dinosaur In The Living Room: A Proposal To Enable Academic Access To Fossils Discovered On Private Land, Sara K. Mazurek Jan 2020

The Dinosaur In The Living Room: A Proposal To Enable Academic Access To Fossils Discovered On Private Land, Sara K. Mazurek

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The United States has been a major source of scientifically significant paleontological discoveries over the course of its history. In addition to invaluable primary source material for the study of evolution and climate change, American paleontology has additionally been invoked as symbols of American power since the founding of the country. Even though fossils are prominent national heritage, the United States today only uniformly regulates their excavation and use on federal public lands through the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act. When fossils are discovered on private land, landowners and those with whom they contract often sell them to private collectors, which …

Women, Politics, And Gender Inequality, Joya Misra Jan 2020

Women, Politics, And Gender Inequality, Joya Misra

Western New England Law Review

Women’s representation in United States politics has increased but remains substantially lower than in many other countries. This Article first examines the structural impediments to higher levels of women’s representation, including how gender stereotypes may limit women’s electoral success. Then, the focus shifts to how women’s representation may and may not result in different kinds of policy priorities. Finally, the Article takes a more intersectional approach to consider how variations among women impact political priorities and approaches.

Scavenger Hunt: Zombie Tag, Karlene T. Clark Jan 2020

Scavenger Hunt: Zombie Tag, Karlene T. Clark

Librarian Publications

Zombie Tag was put together by the author with assistance from the Library’s outreach / activity committee, Zeineb Yousif (Digital Initiatives Librarian), and Kristen Borysewicz (Information Literacy Coordinator). This is an event that can be run after hours or later in the evening with a soft close, letting others know the building will be noisy. It indirectly introduces information literacy by having students find physical “resources” (cards such as housing, food, weapons, etc.) given to them by a librarian. The students need to avoid “zombies” while they seek out computers throughout the building designated at Centers for Disease Control (CDC) …

Comparative Scoping Study Report For The Extraction Of Microalgae Oils From Two Subspecies Of Chlorella Vulgaris, Jasmine Kreft, Eric Moe, Nicholas Garcia, Andrew Ross, Wayne Seames

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The production of microalgae as a fatty acid oil resource for use in biofuels production is a widespread research topic at the lab scale. Microalgae contain a higher lipid content on a dry-weight basis compared to oilseeds such as soybeans. Additionally, the growth and cultivation cycle of microalgae is 15 days, in comparison to soybeans, for which the cycle occurs once or twice annually. However, to date, it has been uneconomical to produce microalgae oils in a world-scale facility due to limitations in cultivating microalgae at commercial scales. Recent developments suggest that the use of heterotrophic microalgae may be economically …

Copper/N-Acetylcysteine Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesis, Characterization, And Antimicrobial Activities, Danya Belnour Jan 2020

Copper/N-Acetylcysteine Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesis, Characterization, And Antimicrobial Activities, Danya Belnour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In recent years, there is a growing interest in developing metal based antimicrobial nanomaterials suitable for agricultural and biomedical applications. For centuries, Copper (Cu) biocide has been used for protecting a wide variety of crops from devastating bacterial and fungal diseases. However, prolonged and aggressive use of Cu led to the development of resistance and accumulation in soil. The latter has been linked to aquatic toxicity due to soil Cu leaching. Furthermore, copper build up in soil causes phytotoxicity and reduces uptake of micronutrient Zn through the root system. In biomedical field, Cu has been historically used as an antimicrobial …
