Sympathy For The Microbiota: How Changes In Gut Microbial Composition Influence The Immune System And Basic Physiology By Way Of The Sympathetic Nervous System, Paul Andrew Muller

Student Theses and Dissertations

The gastro-intestinal tract is the most extensive mucosal surface in mammals and harbors the most numerous immune cell reservoir as well as a complex and autonomous nervous system. The GI tract is continuously exposed to foreign antigen and potentially toxic chemicals through the ingestion of food. In addition, the lumen of the human GI tract is populated with approximately 1013 bacteria, which is equivalent to the number of cells in the entire human body (Sender et al., 2016). The intestinal microbiome, which aids in host metabolism, represents a diverse population of microorganisms separated from the inside of the body by …

Why Do Cognitive Prompts Hurt Learning In Older Adults?, Kurt Kraiger, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Collin M. G. Willis

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

The purposes of the present investigation were to attempt to replicate the negative effects for learning prompts in older adults reported by Cavanagh, Kraiger and Peters (2016), determine if the impact of learning prompts depends on type of prompt, and investigate the two possible explanations of the negative impact of prompts – increased cognitive load and higher negative affect. Learning prompts refer to short text inserted into training content to encourage trainees to rehearse new content or engage in meta‐cognitive activity. Although learning prompts generally lead to greater learning in training, Cavanagh et al. reported a negative impact for prompts …

The Effect Of Advanced Glycation End Products (Ages) On Macrophages, And Their Implications For Prostate Cancer Progression, Callan C. Frye Jan 2020

The Effect Of Advanced Glycation End Products (Ages) On Macrophages, And Their Implications For Prostate Cancer Progression, Callan C. Frye

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are sugar-protein adducts that may worsen cancer severity and may contribute to health disparity outcomes among prostate cancer (PCa) patients. AGEs are formed endogenously via a slow, nonenzymic reaction; however, AGEs are also formed in foods as a result of subjecting meats and sugars to high-heat conditions. AGEs are therefore prolific in the Western Pattern Diet (WPD), which has become increasingly common among industrialized nations. Previous work has identified dietary AGE as contributing to MYC-driven PCa progression, and the dependence of this process upon stromal receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE). This study therefore …

The 2018 Pan-Canadian Securities Regulation Reference: Dualist Federalism To The Rescue Of Cooperative Federalism, Johanne Poirier Jan 2020

The 2018 Pan-Canadian Securities Regulation Reference: Dualist Federalism To The Rescue Of Cooperative Federalism, Johanne Poirier

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In 2018, the impact of Canadian federalism on securities regulation returned one more time to the Supreme Court of Canada. In its Reference re Pan-Canadian Securities Regulation, the Court had once more to clarify “who can do what” with regards to capital markets. But it was also tasked with assessing the normative instruments through which federal partners were attempting to act in a coordinated fashion. The Court’s advisory opinion offers a relatively predictable interpretation of the division of powers in economic matters, and more specifically, the scope of federal jurisdiction over “Trade and Commerce”. However, more significantly, the reference raised …

Mast Cells As Novel Effector Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ethan Strattan Jan 2020

Mast Cells As Novel Effector Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ethan Strattan

Theses and Dissertations--Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is most commonly a treatment for inborn defects of hematopoiesis or acute leukemias. Widespread use of HSCT, a potentially curative therapy, is hampered by onset of graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD), a condition wherein the donor cells recognize the patient tissues as non-self. GVHD can manifest anywhere from weeks to decades post-transplant and is classified as either acute or chronic GVHD, both of which are significant causes of transplant-related morbidity and mortality.

However, GVHD is a complex, multifactorial, and enigmatic disease. The factors driving GVHD at the cellular and molecular level are incompletely understood. Immunosuppression targeting T-cells has …

“Innocent Bystanders”: White Guilt And The Destruction Of Native Americans In Us Literature, 1824-1830, Noor Al-Attar Jan 2020

“Innocent Bystanders”: White Guilt And The Destruction Of Native Americans In Us Literature, 1824-1830, Noor Al-Attar

Theses and Dissertations--English

Stereotypes describing the Native Peoples as lacking in many attributes such as religion, civilization, self-control, and even family bonds originated in the early years of contact, popularized through captivity narratives, and used in nineteenth century writings to justify the “vanishing” of the Native people. My dissertation adds to the discussion of myth of the Vanishing American by focusing on overlooked representations of Native illness. Illness, a shared human experience, was preserved for white characters in white authors’ writings. Ailing Native peoples were either denied any stories narrating this experience of human vulnerability or were depicted as resorting to superstitious and …

Expectation Versus Reality: Star Trek, Nyota Uhura, And The Female Role, Cecelia Otto-Griffiths

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In a media saturated world, there is an abundance of stereotypes perpetuated for women. Since the late 1960’s, however, Star Trek has been one example of how television and film can challenge stereotypes and what is considered normal. This study sought to understand the extent of change in how women’s physical and role representations are presented through the artifact of Lt. Uhura in the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the 2016 film Star Trek: Beyond. Using feminist theory as a lens to conduct a content analysis of these films, this study used frequently identified “feminine” characteristics in …

Salamander Stress And Duress: The Relationship Between Cort, Autotomy And Regeneration, And Exploratory Behaviour, Aaron M. Sullivan, Jacquelyn L. Lewis Jan 2020

Salamander Stress And Duress: The Relationship Between Cort, Autotomy And Regeneration, And Exploratory Behaviour, Aaron M. Sullivan, Jacquelyn L. Lewis

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Responses to stress are generally mediated through the production of glucocorticoids by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (or -interrenal) axis. The prolonged production of stress hormones can contribute to delayed wound healing and growth, but little is known about their influence on regeneration following tail autotomy, or exploratory behaviour in autotomized individuals. Here we examined the relationship between stress, re-generation, and exploratory behaviour in Allegheny Mountain dusky salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) by manipulating corticosterone (CORT) levels via cutaneous patch. First, we measured tail regeneration in salamanders with elevated CORT for 13 weeks after the induction of tail autotomy. Test subjects received a weekly patch …

Modulation Of Receptor Interacting Protein Kinase 1 (Ripk1) Signaling During Dengue Virus Infection, Darshika Jeewanthi Udawatte

Open Access Dissertations

Dengue virus (DENV) infection is the most prevalent arthropod-borne virus disease. There are estimated 100 million symptomatic cases of dengue disease per year worldwide. A lack of effective antiviral therapies or vaccines makes DENV infections a major global health concern. Therefore, understanding the viral and host factors contributing to the disease pathogenesis is critical. DENV has been shown to effectively counteract host innate immune mechanisms. In particular, DENV protease, NS3 has emerged as an inhibitor of host cellular signaling by targeting crucial host proteins. Here we identified RIPK1 as a novel target of DENV NS3. RIPK1 is a central mediator …

The Frequent Flyer’S Guide To Migration: How Songbird Metabolism And Oxidative Status Respond To Endurance Flight And Diet Quality, Kristen J. Demoranville Jan 2020

The Frequent Flyer’S Guide To Migration: How Songbird Metabolism And Oxidative Status Respond To Endurance Flight And Diet Quality, Kristen J. Demoranville

Open Access Dissertations

Migratory songbirds are among the best high-performance endurance athletes on the planet and during their annual peregrinations they are particularly vulnerable to oxidative damage because they maintain relatively high metabolic rates at rest, they are able to fly for long durations while operating at 9 times their resting metabolic rate, and they rely on fats to fuel this exercise which increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. The concept of evolutionary economic design of physiological systems considers such phenotypic flexibility in metabolic and antioxidant responses adaptive in that it allows birds to match the capacity of key physiological systems to prevailing …

Design And Validation Of Smart Fabric Sensors Based On Semiconductive Polymer Composites, Arar Alkhader

Open Access Dissertations

Smart Fabric Sensors (SFSs) have recently gained much interest as they are convenient as a long-term wearable as well as for their simplicity, lightweight, low manufacturing cost, high sensitivity, and flexibility. Semiconductive polymer composites SCPCs can be used as smart fabrics to create force or pressure sensors based on the piezoresistive effect, however, their wider application is limited due to their narrow sensing range, hysteresis and output drift issues as well as due to the lack of literature studying their voltage response related errors especially under high impact forces. In this Doctoral research, eight proposed designs of a smart fabric …

Northern Plains Resource Council V. United States Army Corps Of Engineers, Liz M. Forster Jan 2020

Northern Plains Resource Council V. United States Army Corps Of Engineers, Liz M. Forster

Public Land & Resources Law Review

Environmental activist and indigenous rights groups have challenged the validity of the Keystone XL Pipeline since its initial approval in 2010. In April 2020, less than a month after crews broke ground, the opposing groups notched a major win when the United States District Court for the District of Montana revoked a key permit for the project on the grounds that the United States Army Corps of Engineers had inadequately assessed the pipeline’s impact on endangered species.

The Death Of Administrative Democracy, Joshua Ulan Galperin Jan 2020

The Death Of Administrative Democracy, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Everybody agrees. Everybody is certain. There are no elected bureaucrats.

That pervasive certainty must come as quite a surprise to elected bureaucrats.

The federal bureaucracy presents examples of administrative elections, but the most significant is the United States Department of Agriculture’s elected farmer committees. There are over 7,500 elected farmers sitting on over 2,000 committees, and these committees carry out paradigmatic administrative duties including policymaking and adjudication.

Taking for granted that administrators are unelected, judges have shaped an ascendant doctrine of Presidentialism. This doctrine presumes that the administrative state is only legitimate insofar as it is under the direct control …

Constitutionalizing Nature's Law: Dignity And The Regulation Of Biotechnology In Switzerland, James Toomey Jan 2020

Constitutionalizing Nature's Law: Dignity And The Regulation Of Biotechnology In Switzerland, James Toomey

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The Swiss Constitution was amended by referendum in 1992 to include two unique provisions: Article 119, which imposes strict limits on genetic and reproductive technologies in humans in order to protect ‘human dignity’, and Article 120, which commits the Swiss federal government to limiting genetic technologies in non-human species on the basis of the ‘dignity of the creature’. This article analyzes the role of ‘dignity’ as a limit on biotechnologies in the Swiss constitutional order. It concludes that the understanding of dignity the constitution embraces codifies a contestable metaphysical theory of value at the constitutional level. Specifically, the Swiss constitutional …

Dehumanization 'Because Of Sex': The Multiaxial Approach To The Title Vii Rights Of Sexual Minorities, Shirley Lin Jan 2020

Dehumanization 'Because Of Sex': The Multiaxial Approach To The Title Vii Rights Of Sexual Minorities, Shirley Lin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Although Title VII prohibits discrimination against any employee “because of such individual’s . . . sex,” legal commentators have not yet accurately appraised Title VII’s trait and causation requirements embodied in that phrase. Since 2015, most courts assessing the sex discrimination claims of LGBT employees began to intentionally analyze “sex” as a trait using social-construction evidence, and evaluated separately whether the discriminatory motive caused the workplace harm. Responding to what this Article terms a “doctrinal correction” to causation within this groundswell of decisions, the Supreme Court recently issued an “expansive” and “sweeping” reformulation of but-for causation in Bostock v. Clayton …

Paradox Of Hierarchy And Conflicts Of Values: International Law, Human Rights, And Global Governance, Jootaek Lee Jan 2020

Paradox Of Hierarchy And Conflicts Of Values: International Law, Human Rights, And Global Governance, Jootaek Lee

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

In an international society, hierarchies are set up differently among different countries and societies based on different values, which are naturally conflicting and colliding with each other and result in unstable conditions. Is hierarchy really necessary in an international society? Does more hierarchical order in international society mean more peace? Do we need a supranational organization like the European Union whose laws can pierce state sovereignty and bind citizens of each member state? Does the United Nations need to be reformed to create an effective hierarchy, which will give international society more peace, security, and protection of human rights? This …
