Political Opportunities For Farm Animals In Europe, Lewis Bollard
Political Opportunities For Farm Animals In Europe, Lewis Bollard
General – Farm Animal Issues
Could this year be the tipping point for farm animals in Europe? It’s already brought more legislative progress for Europe’s farm animals than the last decade combined: In January, the agricultural ministers of the two largest European nations, France and Germany, jointly pledged to ban the killing of day-old chicks by the end of next year. The French minister also pledged to ban the castration of piglets without pain relief, as Germany is already set to do. If implemented, the measures could spare 90 million day-old chicks from gassing, and 30 million piglets from castration, across the two nations every …

The Interleukin-12 Family Of Cytokines And Receptor Signaling In Graft-Versus-Host Disease, David Bastian
The Interleukin-12 Family Of Cytokines And Receptor Signaling In Graft-Versus-Host Disease, David Bastian
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is an effective means by which to treat a wide variety of diseases resulting from dysfunctional hematopoiesis due to a potent anti-tumor response known as the graft-versus-tumor (GVT) effect after chemotherapy and/or irradiation. The necessity of donor T cells to mediate GVT is offset by the consequential development of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD); a leading cause of mortality among allo- HCT recipients. The IL-12 family of cytokines signals through Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) and is comprised of IL-12, IL-23, IL-27, IL-35 and IL-39. IL-12 (p35+p40) and IL-23 (p19+p40) have well documented proinflammatory functions responsible for …
Ciliogenesis And Cilia-Mediated Signaling In Cardiac Valve Development And Disease, Diana Bridget Fulmer
Ciliogenesis And Cilia-Mediated Signaling In Cardiac Valve Development And Disease, Diana Bridget Fulmer
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) are serious heart conditions that affect a combined 3-4% of the world population. These diseases carry high risk for secondary complications including arrhythmia, blood regurgitation, and sudden cardiac death. Often, valve diseases are heritable and have complex origins that are not fully understood. The lack of knowledge about valve disease causation likely contributes to the absence of non-surgical treatment options for this patient population. Recent work by our lab and others has demonstrated a link between defects in primary cilia and the development of heart valve disease in humans. Primary cilia …
Cost And Variations In Trauma Types For Pediatric Er Visits By South Carolina County, Cokeitha James Gaddist
Cost And Variations In Trauma Types For Pediatric Er Visits By South Carolina County, Cokeitha James Gaddist
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Children between the ages of 0 to 19 are treated in South Carolina emergency rooms (ER) and hospitals for unintentional injuries at an alarming rate which contributes to high medical cost and high mortality and morbidity rate. The objective of the study is to examine ER visits and hospital discharge data for pediatric patients in South Carolina by county to identify trauma types for unintentional injuries, cost, distribution by high-risk populations and by rural or urban classification to determine appropriate interventions. This is a quantitative study using retrospective analysis of archival data from ER visits and hospital discharge data for …
Individual Differences In Cocaine-Conditioned Avoidance Behavior And Implication For Addiction Vulnerability, Maya Eid
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Decades of studies have examined the mechanisms by which drugs of abuse produce strong rewarding effects that drive addictive behavior. However, these drugs also produce aversive effects that are less well understood, but that also strongly influence drug-seeking, and may contribute to individual variation in addiction liability. For example, individuals with particularly strong aversive responses to nicotine or alcohol may be less likely to acquire smoking or drinking habits, with these protective effects arising from specific biological differences in nicotinic receptor function or alcohol metabolism, respectively. These aversive effects can also be exploited therapeutically, as in widely available treatments for …
Determination Of N-Linked Glycosylation Changes In Hepatocellular Carcinoma And The Associated Glycoproteins For Enhanced Biomarker Discovery And Therapeutic Targets, Connor Allen West
Determination Of N-Linked Glycosylation Changes In Hepatocellular Carcinoma And The Associated Glycoproteins For Enhanced Biomarker Discovery And Therapeutic Targets, Connor Allen West
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
With hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remaining as the fifth most common cancer in the world, causing more than 700,000 deaths annually, the need for reliable, early stage diagnoses and preventive treatments is crucial. While serum glycoproteins are hepatic in origin, making them excellent targets for HCC biomarkers, they can originate from both cancerous and non-cancerous regions and direct analysis of cancerous tissue itself is lacking. To counteract this, I hypothesized that direct tissue analysis combined with proteomic analysis could be utilized to identify more potential targets specific to HCC for early detection. This was done with a primary focus on glycosylation—as …
Role Of Dynorphin/Kappa Opioid Receptor Activity Within The Extended Amygdala In Binge Alcohol Drinking, Harold Lewis Haun
Role Of Dynorphin/Kappa Opioid Receptor Activity Within The Extended Amygdala In Binge Alcohol Drinking, Harold Lewis Haun
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a significant national and global public health problem. Of concern, binge drinking is the most common pattern of excessive alcohol consumption and serves as a risk factor for the development of AUD. Recent studies have implicated the dynorphin/kappa opioid receptor (DYN/KOR) neuropeptide system in this pattern of drinking but the precise circuitry mediating these effects are poorly understood. The central amygdala (CeA) and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) are two interconnected structures within the extended amygdala macrostructure that are rich in DYN/KOR and thought to contribute to binge drinking behavior. In the present …
Antibiotic Disruption Of Oral Microbiota Dysregulates The Osteoimmune Response And Alveolar Bone Homeostasis In The Healthy Periodontium, Brooks Albert Swanson
Antibiotic Disruption Of Oral Microbiota Dysregulates The Osteoimmune Response And Alveolar Bone Homeostasis In The Healthy Periodontium, Brooks Albert Swanson
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Problem: A balanced relationship between the host and oral microbiota supports periodontal health and alveolar bone homeostasis. Antibiotic perturbation of the gut microbiota critically regulates the osteoimmune response at non-oral skeletal sites. However, the impact of antibiotics on the oral microbiota and osteoimmune mechanisms regulating alveolar bone homeostasis are unknown. Considering that periodontitis driven bone loss is caused by dysbiotic shifts in the oral microbiome, antibiotic disruption of the oral microbiota may have deleterious effects on alveolar bone homeostasis. Approach: Drinking water of sex-matched C57BL/6T specific-pathogen-free (SPF) mice was supplemented with minocycline (MINO) or vehicle (VEH) control treatment from age …
Regulation Of Murine Physiology And Metabolism By The Adipocyte Circadian Clock Through Sphingosine Kinase 1, Andrea Kelsey Anderson
Regulation Of Murine Physiology And Metabolism By The Adipocyte Circadian Clock Through Sphingosine Kinase 1, Andrea Kelsey Anderson
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The adipocyte, widely known for its large lipid droplets, is a crucial signaling cell at the crux of metabolism. Programs within the adipocyte itself may have massive impacts upon the body. For example, the internal cell-autonomous circadian clock within the adipocyte regulates such lipid droplet-associated processes as lipolysis (triacylglycerol breakdown) and lipogenesis (lipid uptake, triacylglycerol synthesis), which influence circulating lipids, thus impacting other organs. Circadian rhythms (molecular, metabolic, and behavioral patterning over a day) and lipid droplets are both highly evolutionarily conserved biological phenomena that also happen to be intertwined in the system about which we care today, the global …
Disparate Impact Under The Adea: Applicants Need Not Apply, L. Whitney Woodward
Disparate Impact Under The Adea: Applicants Need Not Apply, L. Whitney Woodward
Georgia State University Law Review
Part I of this Note addresses the current debate on this topic, illustrated through case law in the Eleventh Circuit, the Seventh Circuit, and a recent federal district court ruling in the Ninth Circuit. Part II analyzes the unambiguous, textual differences between the various subsections of the ADEA as well as the textual differences between Title VII and the ADEA. This Note explores these textual arguments through an analysis of the statutes and interpretative case law and concludes that, as drafted, the disparate impact theory of age discrimination should not be available to non- employee job applicants. Part III illustrates …

Sexual Dimorphism In Cancer Immunity, Hyunwoo Kwon
Sexual Dimorphism In Cancer Immunity, Hyunwoo Kwon
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Sex is a biological variable with significant influence on immune function (3). However, immunological mechanisms underlying sex-based incidence, clinical presentation and therapeutic response across various cancers arising in nonreproductive organs remain elusive (4). In the first aim of this dissertation, we provide evidence for sex differences in anti-tumor immunity in human cancer patients via the retrospective analysis of their peripheral blood specimens. For instance, we observed that platelet and neutrophil counts correlate with overall survival in male patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In contrast, only lymphocyte counts showed prognostic significance in female counterparts. Furthermore, computational analyses …

Re-Legitimizing The Unfaithful Bastard Traitor: Re-Productive And Contestatory Intertextuality In Andrés Bello’S Gramática And Orlando, Angela Delutis-Eichenberger
Decimonónica
Conceived prior to his parents’ matrimony in Venezuela, Andrés Bello (1781-1865) was later accused of fathering an illegitimate child from an adulterous liaison in Chile. By then, some had also considered him a traitor of the patriots for his supposed deviant behavior at the onset of the revolution in Caracas in 1810. Following his departure from Venezuela that year, Bello had begun an unforeseen nineteen-year residency in England (1810-1829) that ended with his relocation to Chile (1829-1865). These “exiles” were marked by impressive strides in politics and scholarship. His grammatical studies advanced in London persisted in Santiago, and culminated in …

“Una Cualidad Lírica De Un Encanto Duradero:” El Diálogo De Pintores (Y Pinturas) Estadounidenses Y Chilenos En El Centenario De 1910, M. Elizabeth Boone

Petimetres En La Urbe: Cuerpos En Crisis En La Habana Colonial (1790-1805), Roseli Rojo
Excessive Paternal Devotion In Benito Pérez Galdós’S Torquemada Novels, Gabrielle Miller
¡Mi Hijo Es Mío, Puñales! Excessive Paternal Devotion In Benito Pérez Galdós’S Torquemada Novels, Gabrielle Miller
Decimonónica
While Margaret Mead’s provocative statement that “motherhood is a biological necessity, but fatherhood is a social invention” may be inherently problematic, it successfully underlines “the role of the father” as a culturally-inscribed rather than universal construct (cited in Garbarino 13). In industrialized Western countries of the nineteenth century, the dominant gender ideology of the so-called separate spheres defined the “good father” as a “distant breadwinner” who, as unequivocal family patriarch, provided for his family’s material needs through monetarily-compensated work (Lupton and Barclay 14). Unsurprisingly, the dominant model of fatherhood that emerged in Spain in the second half of the nineteenth …

The Icy Bride And The Invisible Husband: Shivering Solitary Pleasure In Horacio Quiroga’S “El Almohadón De Plumas” (1917), Natalie Love
Decimonónica
Despite the extensive scholarship on Horacio Quiroga’s “El almohadón de plumas,” no study has established a direct correlation between the enigmatic illness of the sexually frustrated bride and prevalent nineteenth-century medical discourses on female frigidity and masturbation. When taking into account these treatises, the infamous deathly “parasite” found lurking inside of Alicia’s feather pillow can be reinterpreted as a metaphor for her wasteful onanistic indulgences caused by sensual dissatisfaction.1 Given the warnings in masturbation treatises surrounding the parasitical nature of feather bedding, Alicia’s vampiric pillow not only points to her solitary pleasures, but she also displays several other characteristics …
Using Northern Pike And Yellow Perch To Attempt A Trophic Cascade, Bryan Sea
Using Northern Pike And Yellow Perch To Attempt A Trophic Cascade, Bryan Sea
Journal of Earth and Life Science
In the midwestern USA, water clarity has decreased in shallow lakes as a result of large populations of Fathead Minnow Pimephales promelas and agriculture that impact the life that depend on shallow habitats, such as waterfowl, fish, and aquatic plants. Northern Pike Esox lucius and Yellow Perch Perca flavescens were stocked in a few lakes in attempt to create a tropic cascade and reduce populations of nuisance Fathead Minnows. Northern Pike were stocked as fry and Yellow Perch were stocked as adults either pre-spawn or post-spawn. Lake managers hypothesized adult Yellow Perch would spawn and the age-0 Perch would feed …

Using The Corporate Prosecution And Sentencing Model For Individuals: The Case For A Unified Federal Approach, Rachel E. Barkow
Faculty Articles
This essay explores the different approaches the Department of Justice and Sentencing Commission have taken to individual and corporate defendants and explain why aspects of the corporate model should apply to individual cases as well. Part I will describe the key attributes of the modern federal model for individuals. Its emphasis is on controlling the discretion of line prosecutors and judges and shows a marked preference for severity. Part II will explain how the approach to corporate criminal law enforcement emphasizes individual assessment, the need to balance the costs of punishment with its benefits, and an emphasis on considering other …

An Assessment Of 2d And 3d Spatial Accuracy Of Photogrammetry For Livestock Health Monitoring, Luis Felipe Pampolini
An Assessment Of 2d And 3d Spatial Accuracy Of Photogrammetry For Livestock Health Monitoring, Luis Felipe Pampolini
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the use of consumer-grade unmanned aircraft systems for image-based remote sensing in agriculture with application towards livestock health monitoring. A two-dimensional spatial error experiment was conducted to quantify the spatial accuracy of georeferenced orthomosaic imagery collected using a drone and processed with photogrammetry software. Treatment variables included altitude above ground level and image data type (visible and multispectral). The results from the ANOVA test indicated that there were significant differences between data types, but no significant differences between altitudes. The experiment was then expanded to a three-dimensional study where two life-size …
