Digital Humanities At Cuny. Building Communities Of Practice In The Public University, Stefano Morello

Publications and Research

In this essay, I reflect on my experience working in the field of Digital Humanities at The Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) to refute the misconception that the point of intersection of humanities and computation is dependent on robust technological infrastructure and, therefore, outside of the reach of underfunded public institutions. On the contrary, my tenure as a GC Digital Fellow suggests that the development of DH communities of practice can be an especially valuable asset for public universities, due to the waterfall effect they can produce for both the academic and the local …

Insecta Mundi

Three new species of Enoclerus Gahan (Coleoptera: Cleridae) are described and illustrated. They are: Enoclerus minas Opitz from Colombia and Brazil, E. salta Opitz from Argentina, and E. thomasi Opitz from Bolivia.

Corporaal (1950: 14) lists 185 species of Enoclerus Gahan (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Clerinae). I know of over 60 undescribed species. It is a daunting task to organize such a high number of species into some sort of taxonomic revision, which cannot be provided at this time. However, some of these new species can be described that will be added to a larger work at a later date. Such descriptive …

A Transgenic Pig Model Expressing A Cmv-Zsgreen1 Reporter Across An Extensive Array Of Tissues., Amy T Desaulniers, Rebecca A Cederberg, Elizabeth P Carreiro, Channabasavaiah B Gurumurthy, Brett R White

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

Since genetic engineering of pigs can benefit both biomedicine and agriculture, selecting a suitable gene promoter is critically important. The cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, which can robustly drive ubiquitous transgene expression, is commonly used at present, yet recent reports suggest tissue-specific activity in the pig. The objective of this study was to quantify ZsGreen1 protein (in lieu of CMV promoter activity) in tissues from pigs harboring a CMV-ZsGreen1 transgene with a single integration site. Tissue samples (

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The ecological health of port environments, which are dynamic and hotspots of anthropogenic activities, can be analyzed using specific pathogenic bacteria as they provide definite evidence and source of pollution. The influence of seasons and environmental settings on total bacterial count (TBC), distribution of fecal indicators, and Vibrio spp. was explored in Visakhapatnam port, located along the east coast of India. South-west monsoon had a significant influence on TBC, fecal indicators, and Vibrio spp., and the abundance was influenced by the eutrophic environment in the inner harbour. Fecal indicators were one order higher in sub-surface water when compared with sediment, …

Sabbah, Kefei Zhang, Ramesh C. Gupta, Jiang Xu, Vinita Singh-Gupta, Michael Ma, Kathe Stauber, Nathalie Nguyen, John Adams

Cardiology Articles

BACKGROUND: Unlike β(1)- and β(2)-adrenergic receptors (ARs), β(3)-AR stimulation inhibits cardiac contractility and relaxation. In the failing left ventricular (LV) myocardium, β(3)-ARs are upregulated, and can be maladaptive in the setting of decompensation by contributing to LV dysfunction. This study examined the effects of intravenous (i.v.) infusions of the β(3)-AR antagonist APD418 on cardiovascular function and safety in dogs with systolic heart failure (HF).

METHODS AND RESULTS: Three separate studies were performed in 21 dogs with coronary microembolization-induced HF (LV ejection fraction [LVEF] of approximately 35%). Studies 1 and 2 (n = 7 dogs each) were APD418 dose escalation studies …

Exploration Of Local Microorganisms From Rumen And Their Potential To Make Silage From Agricultural Waste, Purnamasari Listya, Purnomo Hari, Setyawan Hidayat Bambang

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Agricultural wastes are very diverse in type and have low nutrient values, especially in lignin and cellulose, which are difficult to digest. One way of overcoming this problem is by biological treatment using microorganisms, also known as silage. The availability of bio-activators that are both cost-efficient and easy to make further suggests that using local microorganisms may be an effective possible solution. This study focused on processing food crop waste (corn leaves) into silage using local microorganisms as the bio-activators. Research took place in the Agrotechnology Laboratory, University of Jember. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments: Treatment …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the longitudinal, sideways, vertical, and sideslip motions of an open-frame remotely operated vehicle (ROV) were experimentally and numerically investigated. The open-frame ROV was designed to be asymmetric in both the longitudinal and vertical directions to achieve special functionalities. A physical ROV model was tested in a towing tank with different velocities and sideslip angles in the horizontal and vertical planes. A numerical simulation was conducted with the same working conditions used in the scaled model tests by using a segregated flow solver based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. This study investigated the effect of the hydrodynamic forces (moments) …

Vision Based Target Recognition For Cage Aquaculture Detection, Chao-Xun Chen, Jih-Gau Juang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study applies Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to netcage fish-farming. The UAV can fly thru cages along a predefined route. At each cage, the UAV can automatically drop sensors to collect the environment data around the cage. However, low cost commercial or assembled drone might not have precise Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Also, there are many uncertain factors cause Global Positional System (GPS) instability, like weather, location…etc. The main idea of this study is using GPS to guide the drone to approximated location of each cage. Then, apply image recognition to obtain the net-cage and UAV relative position. After …

The Long Shadow Of Jacobson V. Massachusetts: Public Health, Fundamental Rights, And The Courts, Daniel Farber

San Diego Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic struck the United States in early 2020. The coronavirus prompted public health mandates without precedent for at least a century. Some states almost entirely locked down. These measures inevitably impinged on activities that the Constitution would normally protect. In confronting these cases, many courts have turned to a 1905 Supreme Court case decision, Jacobson v. Massachusetts, often considered the leading case in public health law. There is little agreement, however, about how that decision fits into the current framework of constitutional law. As a result, courts have differed widely in the degree of deference they give …

More Than A Mask: Stay-At-Home Orders And Religious Freedom, Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, Madeline Thomas

San Diego Law Review

COVID-19 has changed our legal universe. Many states are responding by issuing stay-at-home orders, and as cases rise, may have to prohibit gatherings again. One issue states and courts have to grapple with is the relationship between stay-at-home orders and religion. Stay-at-home orders that require closing down churches may be challenged as violating the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom. Under our current jurisprudence, these cases may be handled under a highly deferential standard or under strict scrutiny—depending on the specific order in question, as well as on whether the state has a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). We recommend, …

Two Approaches To Measure Trace Metals Fluxes At The Sediment–Water Interface: Sediment Porewater Profile And Benthic Incubation, Harmesa, Wahyudi Johan

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The biogeochemical cycle of trace metals is very likely affected by the global change in the ocean, especially due to the increasing of sea surface temperature and acidity. Thus, assessing biogeochemical cycle of trace metals will beneficial in elucidating the potential impact of climate change as well as ocean acidification. The assessment of the biogeochemical cycle of trace metals can be performed by measuring trace metals fluxes crossing the sediment–water interface. The main challenge in this measurement is the difficulty of measuring metal concentrations at trace levels due to either physical factors or biological factors that can affect the total …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The emission of greenhouse gases, including high CO2 and other materials, initiates global warming and climate change. Atmospheric CO2 that affects the carbonate system of seawater causes ocean acidification (OA). OA affects marine organisms directly, as well as humans economically and ecologically. Considering the high impact of OA and following the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, systematic research and monitoring of OA is necessary in Indonesia, whose seas play an important role in this emerging phenomenon. This review discusses the urgency of OA monitoring systems and suggests carbonate system monitoring, as well as carbon biogeochemistry. OA significantly affects marine production …
