Use Of Otolith Chemistry To Assess Recruitment And Habitat Use Of A White Bass Fishery In A Nebraska Reservoir, Matthew A. Perrion, Mark A. Kaemingk, Keith D. Koupal, Casey W. Schoenebeck, Nate A. Bickford
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Managing fisheries that exhibit variable annual recruitment is challenging, and maintenance stockings are often prescribed to minimize interannual population variation. Maintenance stockings are costly and may not be necessary if sufficient natural recruitment is occurring. Therefore, developing tools and techniques that can collectively assess hatching origin and subsequent habitat use of individuals would be valuable. Herein, we aimed to assess the efficacy of otolith chemistry techniques to (1) determine whether there was evidence of natural recruitment within an annually stocked white bass population and (2) examine the potential to describe spatial reservoir use of these age-0 fish. A sample of …

“Somos Seres Humanos. Merecemos Vivir Dignamente”: Coloniality And Human Rights In The Face Of Family Separation, Olivia Pertierra
“Somos Seres Humanos. Merecemos Vivir Dignamente”: Coloniality And Human Rights In The Face Of Family Separation, Olivia Pertierra
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores how people who have been deported to Mexico experience and confront state-sanctioned family separation. From a content analysis of 23 interviews in the Humanizing Deportation public access community story telling archive, three key themes emerge: mixed-status families are denied equal access to family unity, attempts and considerations of re-entry post-deportation are affirmations of the value of family unity, and experiences in detention illustrate the dehumanizing experience of family separation. Theories of coloniality, human rights, and state control over reproduction provide ethical and long-term historical lenses that elucidate the experience of deportation and family separation. The content analysis …

“The Fight For Hózhó”: The Survival Of Diné Ethnomedical Lifeways Within The Nuclear Landscape, Cabrini Austin
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis I explore conceptualizations of health and healing by the Navajo in hopes to gain a deeper understanding of how the preservation of traditional medical knowledge is affected by a legacy of environmental degradation. Uranium mining occurred on and around Navajo lands from 1944 to 1982. During this time, hundreds of Navajo miners and their families were exposed to harmful radiation through the contamination of air and water sources. Not only has this directly impacted their health, but it has also negatively affected many of the traditional food and plant sources that the Navajo use for ceremonial and …
Effect Of Temperature On The Feeding Behavior And Parasitic Load In Pomacea Paludosa (Say) And Pomacea Insularum (D'Orbigny), Benjamin Lafond
Effect Of Temperature On The Feeding Behavior And Parasitic Load In Pomacea Paludosa (Say) And Pomacea Insularum (D'Orbigny), Benjamin Lafond
Theses & ETDs
Changes in the Earth's climates have been known to cause havoc across many taxa globally. The feeding behavior and parasitic load was examined in the native gastropod, Pomacea paludosa and the invasive gastropod, Pomacea insularum at a control temperature (25°C) and at an experimental, higher, temperature (27.8°C). A feeding behavior study was performed at both temperatures and the parasitic load was evaluated in each gastropod at the conclusion of the study. At the higher temperature both gastropods tend to eat more spinach which suggests that more energy is required to maintain homeostasis at the higher temperature. This may cause ecological …
The Political And Cultural Implications Of The Ancient Greek Ghost, Margie Freeman
The Political And Cultural Implications Of The Ancient Greek Ghost, Margie Freeman
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the role of ghosts in the works of two Ancient Greek authors, Homer and Aeschylus. I argue that these ghosts are not simple plot devices intended to shock the audience, but are integrated characters whose desires, actions, and words reinforce major themes in the works in which they appear. Homer—whose Iliad and Odyssey were compiled around the eighth century BCE—uses ghosts to show the importance of the home and family in the epics. Although Homeric ghosts are political figures, they only speak about personal relationships, never political ones. Aeschylus, on the other hand, uses ghosts in Persians, …
The Limits Of Public Education On Consciousness: Curating Buddhism, Pamela Mccabe
The Limits Of Public Education On Consciousness: Curating Buddhism, Pamela Mccabe
Theses & ETDs
Consciousness is a Buddhist concept that encompasses connectedness to the self, the world, the past, and the future. Understanding this concept is paramount to achieving enlightenment and a proper comprehension of the religion and culture. The Rubin Museum of Art in Chelsea, New York City is home to thousands of Himalayan Buddhist art pieces that span across thousands of years. This thesis explores the importance of the consciousness, how this is depicted within artistic symbols, and where the Rubin Museum successfully or unsuccessfully exhibits the importance of consciousness and its connection to other concepts. This has been done by looking …
“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben
“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben
Theses & ETDs
This thesis identifies a common interest between postcolonial theory and Lacanian notions of subjectivity. Both lines of thought observe a wound that has been written over, by hegemonic structures that enforce colonial networks of power or by the illusion of a stable identity, and examine the traces of that wound as they manifest in our experience of the world. These structures of power and subjectivity govern how our experiences may signify and how we may interpret them, while the wound they attempt to bandage represents a void of signification or holds something inarticulable. The legacies of colonial medicine have defined …
Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank
Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank
Theses & ETDs
Brain fever is a recurring event in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels. It plays a major role in bringing his characters face to face with their buried inner conflicts, especially where an external attitude disguises or compensates for a deeper semi-conscious or unconscious truth which has been rejected. The occurrence of fever signals the insistent onset of a transformational process which will not abate until all self-deception has been burned away, bringing the light of consciousness to repressed and suppressed content and revealing a character’s essential personality. A close analysis of fever as a symptom of the psycho-physiological imperative of transformation in …

Utilizing Existential philosophy and personal contemplation in the form of a memoir, Harold Gonzalez defines the fundamental principles that construct their identity. The work pushes for dialogue and thought to the condition of"meaning", and is presented through a chronological analysis of them and their family's journey from Central America to the United States. It sheds light to their experiences in the United States education system and how it inspired them to take interest in the sound .sensory expenence. Through this journey Harold presents their view of the world by referencing a variety of thinkers such as Frederich Nietzsche, Soren Kieerkegard, …
Implementing More Biologically Plausible Neural Networks With Multiple Weights In Neat, Elan Works
Implementing More Biologically Plausible Neural Networks With Multiple Weights In Neat, Elan Works
Theses & ETDs
In many Artificially Intelligent systems biological terms are used to describe particular concepts, or are used directly for inspiration. This project aims to create a more biologically plausible model of a neuron for use in a neural network which will evolve over generations to complete the task of balancing two poles on moving carts. This is attempted through the use of four-vectors and matrix multiplications and is ultimately unsuccessful at outperforming the original algorithm.
The Effect Of Bee Venom On The Treatment Of Muscular Dystrophy In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kelsey Patterson
The Effect Of Bee Venom On The Treatment Of Muscular Dystrophy In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kelsey Patterson
Theses & ETDs
Muscular dystrophy is a term referring to a group of several disorders with symptoms resulting in the wasting away and weakening of muscular tissue. In this the condition ranges from different levels of severity. One example of a more severe form is Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) which significantly shortens the lifetime of those affected. Current treatment for these conditions are surgery, medication, and physical therapy. To add to the current treatments, bee venom has been shown to be effective in treating a large variety of conditions such as arthritis and cancer. Using Caenorhabditis elegans, we examine the effect bee venom …
Identification And Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Myosin Heavy Chain Genes In Xenopus Borealis, Robyn Mccartan
Identification And Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Myosin Heavy Chain Genes In Xenopus Borealis, Robyn Mccartan
Theses & ETDs
There is an inherent relationship between genetic information, physiological intermediates, and animal behavior. When studying animal behavior, it is important that not only this relationship is studied, but that the relationship is studied in a comparative, evolutionary context. In doing so, it can be determined which physiological intermediates are necessary and sufficient for a behavior to occur. One such behavior where the behavior itself is understood but not the entirety of the physiological intermediates or genetic basis is the vocalization of Xenopus borealis , a type of African clawed frog. In this study, I used bioinformatic techniques and …
Keeping Sacredness In Mind: A Critical Analysis Of Mircea Eliade’S The Sacred And The Profane, Jonathon Engstrom
Keeping Sacredness In Mind: A Critical Analysis Of Mircea Eliade’S The Sacred And The Profane, Jonathon Engstrom
Theses & ETDs
The contents of this paper critically examine The Sacred and The Profane by Mircea Eliade. This paper analyzes and criticizes two major argumentative points put forward by Eliade in The Sacred and Profane regarding the nature of sacredness as a concept and what it means for something to be sacred. Mircea Eliade makes some arguments which would be compelling if the premises from which they stem were better substantiated. The First Chapter is most chiefly concerned with the nature of sacredness and engaging with the ideas which stem from Eliade’s flawed premise that sacredness is a manifest quality of the …
Mapping The Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Marine Debris On Lido Beach And Siesta Beach: An Annual Gis Study, Raquel Valdes
Mapping The Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Marine Debris On Lido Beach And Siesta Beach: An Annual Gis Study, Raquel Valdes
Theses & ETDs
Marine debris can consist of almost any anthropogenic item, which makes its presence in the environment a threat. In this study, the different types, abundances, and distributions of marine debris on a seasonal basis at both Lido Beach and Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida were examined. A total of 11,143 pieces of debris were collected from both beaches over all four seasons. While there were no distinct seasonal differences, the Summer season had the largest collection of marine debris (Lido: 2,252 items / Siesta: 3,465 items), while the Spring season had the smallest collection (Lido: 709 items / Siesta: 728 …
Informing Conservation Efforts Of Florida Endangered Bromeliads Through Species Distribution Models, Evaluation Of Microclimate, And Conversations With Land Managers, Liliana Benitez
Theses & ETDs
The current environmental crisis threatens biodiversity worldwide. Florida is one of the most biodiverse states in the United States of America, containing many unique and endangered species. Two of these species are the epiphytic bromeliads Tillandsia utriculata and T. fasciculata (Bromeliaceae), threatened by an introduced bromeliad weevil, Metamasius callizona (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). This study used species distribution models (SDMs), and microclimate data collection with data loggers to evaluate the effects of climate on distribution at large and fine scales, using two study sites: Myakka River State Park (MRSP) and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens (FTBG), the former …
Growth And Development Of Sansevieria Trifasciata Var. Laurentii Cuttings Upon Exposure To Various Hormones At Different Concentrations, Robert Chin
Theses & ETDs
Auxin and cytokinin are the main plant hormones used for triggering growth of new organs through totipotency. In order to study their effects and to see how useful their application may be to aid in asexual reproduction of a particular species, Sansevieria trifasciata var. laurentii (De Wild.) N. E. Br., cuttings were grown with different concentrations of these hormones added at different intervals. To make the cuttings, the tips of leaves were cut into 15 g (+ or - 1 g) segments which were then treated with hormone solutions (introduced at different intervals and concentrations) or pure DI water for …

Creating A Data Visualization Of The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Tess) Dataset, Tali Zacks
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I set out to discuss the importance of data visualization in a data driven world and apply that to astrophysics by creating a visualization of the data collected by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). In discussing the history and principles of visualization and the complex world of exoplanet discovery, I was able to explore the important, and often overlooked, connections between art and science.
A Preliminary Survey Of Macroinvertebrates Inhabiting Southwest Florida Storm Drain Inlets, Natali Shafer
A Preliminary Survey Of Macroinvertebrates Inhabiting Southwest Florida Storm Drain Inlets, Natali Shafer
Theses & ETDs
Storm drain ecosystems are under-studied sources of biodiversity in the urban environment. As sea levels rise, saltwater is predicted to infiltrate the stormwater removal pipelines, which will have unknown effects on the ecology of the drains. Using artificial substrate as a collection method, benthic macroinvertebrates from over ten different phylogenetic orders were found to inhabit storm drain inlets at New College of Florida. Although detailed speciation was not performed in this preliminary assessment, it seems that the macroinvertebrates found in the inlets were primarily freshwater organisms. Nevertheless, as we’ve seen with red tide and the Deepwater Horizon events, having a …
Monitoring The Changes In Elasmobranch And Teleost Abundance In Sarasota Bay And Terra Ceia Bay After The 2018-2019 Red Tide Event, Sandra Domenech
Monitoring The Changes In Elasmobranch And Teleost Abundance In Sarasota Bay And Terra Ceia Bay After The 2018-2019 Red Tide Event, Sandra Domenech
Theses & ETDs
Red tide is a toxic algal bloom caused by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis that occurs frequently off the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Red tide events can result in massive fish kills; however, only a few studies have been done on the recovery of estuarine ecosystems after a massive red tide event. In the summer of 2018, a massive red tide bloom struck Sarasota Bay, resulting in a dramatic shift in fish abundance and community structure. Incidentally, another nearby embayment, Terra Ceia Bay, did not experience any red tide conditions that year. We continued to monitor …
The Effects Of Extended Exposure To Zea Mays L. Border Cells With Total Associated Exudates On The Motility And Bacterial Attraction Abilities Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Melissa Ruiz
Theses & ETDs
Nematodes, including Caenorhabditis elegans, become temporarily paralyzed (quiescent) when exposed to root border cells and their total associated exudates (BCTAE) from Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor, and Pisum sativum. C. elegans can excrete exudates to attract consumable bacteria. However, it is unknown whether quiescence induces lasting effects on C. elegans’ motility and their ability to attract bacteria; knowing its potential effects may allow insight into the rhizosphere’s trophic and non-trophic interactions. To investigate, two chemotaxis assays were conducted to evaluate the chemotactic responses of a.) C. elegans to Zea mays BCTAE and then b.) Pseudomonas putida – a gram-negative bacterium with …
On Tolstoy: Literary Pedagogy And The Morality Of Death, Mackenzie Bynam
On Tolstoy: Literary Pedagogy And The Morality Of Death, Mackenzie Bynam
Theses & ETDs
This undergraduate thesis explores the themes of death and morality in both the fictional and nonfictional works of the 19th century Russian novelist Count Leo Tolstoy. The first chapter contains an analysis of the author’s personal and religious beliefs concerning death and examines his role of author as educator. The second chapter examines death within several of Tolstoy’s short works and explores the moral implications of their deaths for Tolstoy’s readership, keeping in mind the conclusions of the part first.
Put Your Strands In The Air: An Evaluation Of Environmental Dna As A Tool In Biodiversity Monitoring, Sarah Wilhide
Put Your Strands In The Air: An Evaluation Of Environmental Dna As A Tool In Biodiversity Monitoring, Sarah Wilhide
Theses & ETDs
In this present time, most scientists agree that we are living through the sixth mass extinction and that this event is partly due to humans’ effect on the environment (Abatzoglou and Williams, 2016; Payne et al., 2016). Maintaining biodiversity is a key component in mitigating the many effects of anthropogenic climate change. Biodiversity must first be evaluated to determine if and what conservation steps should be taken. Monitoring biodiversity across the various scale of life is an undertaking and traditional monitoring practices are not always sufficient. The use of environmental DNA and subsequent analysis may aid in this endeavor. Environmental …
Atrazine Alters The Gonadal Morphology, But Not The Laryngeal Mass Or Call Inter Pulse Interval, Of Silurana Tropicalis, Quinn Ferguson
Atrazine Alters The Gonadal Morphology, But Not The Laryngeal Mass Or Call Inter Pulse Interval, Of Silurana Tropicalis, Quinn Ferguson
Theses & ETDs
Atrazine is a widely-used herbicide and known estrogenic and antiandrogenic endocrine disruptor, but its effects on the model organism Silurana tropicalis, which produces a sexually dimorphic call, have not been evaluated. To assess atrazine’s effects on this species, we exposed postmetamorphic, juvenile frogs to atrazine until they reached maturity, then assessed call inter pulse interval, vocal organ mass, and gonadal morphology. We found single-sex polygonadism, an estrogenic effect, in 2 atrazine-exposed males, but did not note a significant difference between the vocal organ masses or call inter-pulse intervals of control and atrazine frogs. Although this study has established that juvenile …
