The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using self-compassionate focused journal writing as a way to induce a more self-compassionate and less self-critical view in students of themselves and their art. This study examinedthe connection between the use of self-compassionate focused journal writing prompts and an increase in the levels of self-compassion that a student feltfor him or herself. The purpose of this study was to provide students with the self-compassion tools, strategies, and skills necessary to deal with perceived setbacks in their choreographic process and performance. This quantitative and qualitative study was designed to answer …
The Effects Of Dance On Gross Motor Skills And Strength In Students With Down Syndrome, Jennifer Canfield
The Effects Of Dance On Gross Motor Skills And Strength In Students With Down Syndrome, Jennifer Canfield
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if weekly participation in a ballet class improved upon the gross motor skills of students with Down Syndrome. This study is important because the student participants all showed growth in their gross motor abilities as well as overall strength and physical functioning. When students with special needs are regularly exposed to dance, certain physical skills that are normally more challenging for them, improve, including gross motor functioning, increased strength, better coordination, and an increased ability to balance. This research can be used to justify the expansion of inclusive and adaptive dance opportunities …

Sagebrush Seeds Of Success: A Genetic Analysis Of Bureau Of Land Management Seeds Of Success Seeds And Of Eriogonum Umbellatum, Emily Katherine Schumacher
Master's Theses
Due to the increasing frequency of anthropogenic disturbances, greater effort needs to be put into identifying appropriate seed material for large scale restoration projects. The Bureau of Land Management created the Seeds of Success (SOS) project to increase stocks of native seeds for restoration projects following worsening disturbances. However, there is little known about the genetic composition of these seeds, so it is unclear if these seed accessions will be able to establish healthy and persistent native plant communities. This thesis identified that in 20 accessions of SOS seeds, inbreeding was low to moderate in 17 accessions, allelic richness was …

Addressing Health Literacy Needs Of The Older Adult Focused On Improving Medication Adherence: An Online Education Program For Nurse Practitioners, Angela D. Pickerel
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
As healthcare providers, nurse practitioners are tasked with assuring patients have a clear understanding of their medical health, know how to navigate the healthcare system, and recognize the need to develop self-care skills. Several populations are known to be at risk for the effects of inadequate health literacy; however, the older adult population is at greater risk because of increased burdens related to negative effects of aging on cognitive skills and increased prevalence of chronic disease requiring complex medication regimens. Inadequate health literacy has been linked to increased risk of hospitalizations, emergency room visits, adverse drug reactions and interaction, and …

This scholarly project was a nonexperimental quality improvement project to create a practice care guideline and algorithm with the intention of enhancing self efficacy in non-compliant chronic disease patients within the primary care setting. The objectives of the clinical guideline and algorithm were to assist primary care providers in identifying low self-efficacy in chronic disease patients, provide guidance in selection of interventions to develop or improve self-efficacy in patients, and promote better disease management. The guideline outlines tools and techniques to give primary care providers the information and skills needed to improve strategies to counsel patients to become more active …
Screening For Melanoma For At-Risk Population: A Practice Guide, Sapana Shakya
Screening For Melanoma For At-Risk Population: A Practice Guide, Sapana Shakya
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Melanoma is a lethal skin cancer that kills one American every hour (American Academy of Dermatology, 2018b). The incidence and prevalence rate of melanoma is on the rise and continues to affect people, increasing the mortality and morbidity rate and financial burden of the disease. In 2016, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concluded that there was insufficient evidence to assess the balance of benefits and harms of visual skin examination by a clinician to screen for skin cancer in adults. However, this recommendation was only applicable to the patients who were asymptomatic. The routine skin cancer screening has shown …
Motivational Interviewing For Weight Loss In Primary Care, Hannah Brumbaugh
Motivational Interviewing For Weight Loss In Primary Care, Hannah Brumbaugh
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Obesity is prevalent in this country and leads to many preventable deaths and chronic illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, and various types of cancers. “Obesity is prevalent in the western world and leads to reduced life expectancy due to increased risk of chronic illness such cardiovascular disease” (Hardcastle, Taylor, Bailey, Harley, & Hagger, 2013, p. 2) It also has been established in the literature that even a small amount of weight loss, as little as 5% of a patient’s total body weight, has statistically meaningful risk reductions, especially those that relate to cardiovascular health. Behavioral interventions such as motivational interviewing …

Unpublished Doctor of Nursing Practice scholarly project, University of Northern Colorado, 2019. Perinatal mental health issues including depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, mania, and psychosis occur frequently during pregnancy and after delivery; these issues have potentially devastating impacts on mothers, infants, other family members, and communities. Despite increasing awareness of perinatal mental health issues and formal recommendations to implement universal screening and ensure access to appropriate follow-up, there is wide variation in clinical practice across regions and providers. Inconsistent screening, paired with limited …
Oral Health During Pregnancy: Promoting Awareness Of Guidelines And Education Resources In The Evaluation Of Self-Perceived Efficacy To Educate, Screen, And Refer Women During Pregnancy For The Nurse Practitioner Student, Leah Salmans
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Historically, oral health (OH) care has been largely misunderstood and excluded from the realm of primary care. However, this exclusion is at odds with the fact that oral health can and does have an impact on individuals’ general health and well-being. Oral disease is considered one of the most widespread chronic diseases, despite being highly preventable. For women, pregnancy can set the stage for oral disease development or exacerbation due to multiple factors. Poor maternal oral health has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, contributing to early dental caries development in their children, and detrimental effects over her lifespan. To …

Asset Pricing Of International Equity Under Cross-Border Investment Frictions, Thummim Cho, Argyris Tsiaras
Asset Pricing Of International Equity Under Cross-Border Investment Frictions, Thummim Cho, Argyris Tsiaras
Economics: Faculty Publications
We develop a tractable asset pricing model of international equity markets to investigate the impact of frictions in cross-border financial investments on equity return dynamics and cross-border equity holdings across countries. We characterize the equilibrium of the model analytically at the limit as one country becomes large relative to all other countries. Our results clarify the distinct impact of cross-border holding costs, cash-flow fundamentals comovement, and preferences on cross-border portfolio holdings, return comovement, and risk premia. The model offers a unified explanation for key empirical regularities in the cross-section of equity markets regarding cross-country return correlations, CAPM pricing errors, and …
Reassessing Self-Dealing: Between No Conflict And Fairness, Andrew F. Tuch
Reassessing Self-Dealing: Between No Conflict And Fairness, Andrew F. Tuch
Fordham Law Review
Scholars have long disagreed on which of two rules is more effective when a fiduciary engages in self-dealing. Some defend the “strict” no-conflict rule, which categorically bans self-dealing. Others prefer the “flexible” and “pragmatic” fairness rule, which allows self-dealing if it is fair to beneficiaries. The centrality of this debate cannot be overstated: corporate law as a field is fundamentally concerned with self-dealing by fiduciaries. Yet a lack of firm data means that this debate has dragged on for decades, with no end in sight. This Article makes a simple but powerful point: the entire debate is somewhat misguided because, …
Reciprocity Through Ratings: An Experimental Study Of Bias In Evaluations, Simon Halliday, Jonathan Lafky
Reciprocity Through Ratings: An Experimental Study Of Bias In Evaluations, Simon Halliday, Jonathan Lafky
Economics: Faculty Publications
This paper studies the potential for ratings of seller quality to be influenced by side payments to raters. In a laboratory setting, we find that even modest side payments from sellers to raters have large effects, with the type of rating (favorable or unfavorable) given to a seller determined primarily by how large a monetary transfer the seller makes to the rater. Our results demonstrate that side payments can crowd out a rater’s concern for buyers, even in situations where there is no potential for long-term relationship building.

The Effects Of Stress Relieving Heat Treatment On The Microstructure And Residual Stress Of Inconel 718 Fabricated By Laser Metal Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Process, Xiaoqing Wang, Kevin Chou
Research, Publications & Creative Work
In this study, the microstructure and residual stress of the Inconel 718 parts, which were fabricated by laser metal powder bed fusion additive manufacturing process, in as-fabricated and stress-relieved conditions were investigated by metallographic analysis and microhardness test. Fine equiaxed and columnar cellular dendrites were revealed in the Transverse plane, Frontal plane, and Sagittal plane, respectively. Laves phases were found in the interdendritic regions and interlayers. After the stress relief heat treatment, the Laves phases has partly solved into the γ matrix and the microstructure became relatively homogeneous, which leads to the significant increase (~19%) in the microhardness. Residual stress …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Hyarulonicacid (HA) is an abundant molecule found in synovial fluid and plays an important role as a lubricant and shock absorber for the joints. Nonetheless, the effects of synovial fluid replacement with HA after canine stifle surgery remains elusive. A retrospective study was conducted on 54 small breed dogs with either medial patellar luxation (MPL) or cranial cruciate ligament ruptures (CCLR). Dogs were classified as HA (21 with MPL-HA and 16 with CCLR-HA) or control (10 with MPL-C and 7 with CCLR-C) groups. The weight bearing score, lameness score, and pain scores were compared between HA and control groups on …

Oropharyngeal swabs of 262 free-ranging macaques (Macaca fasicularisand M. mulatta) were tested for Herpesviridae. The occurrence was 24.4% (64/262), and no macaques showed clinical signs of the disease. The virus was restricted to the northern and north-eastern regions of Thailand. DNA polymerase genes of the 64 positive samples were then characterized and analyzed. Eight samples (3.1%) were found to be closely related to retroperitoneal fibromatosis-associated herpesvirus (RFHV) and were classified in the genus Rhadinovirus, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae. The phylogram of the virus revealed it to be species-specific within the macaque population. A total of 56 samples (21.4%) exhibited a nucleotide relationship …

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) Preferentially Infected The Apical Surface Of Primary Endometrial Cell Monolayer, Muttarin Lothong, Suphot Wattanaphansak, Chatsri Deachapunya, Sutthasinee Poonyachoti
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The underlying mechanism of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causing reproductive failure and re-circulation in herds has remained unclear. Endometrial cells primarily infected with PRRSV may serve as a significant target for PRRSV eradication. Primary endometrial (PE) cells from the porcine uterus were isolated and cultivated to pursue this possibility. Immunocytochemistry analysis revealed the protein expression of classical estrogen receptors (ER-and ER-), but not PRRSV receptors, CD163 and sialoadhesin in PE cells. PE cells were apically/basolaterally inoculated with PRRSV type I/type II isolated from PRRSV infected lungs or mock infection. Cytopathic effects (CPE) and PRRSV-GP5 positive cells were …
