Pilosopiyang Pinoy: Uso Pa Ba? (The Relevance Of Filipino Philosophy In Social Renewal), Romualdo E. Abulad
Pilosopiyang Pinoy: Uso Pa Ba? (The Relevance Of Filipino Philosophy In Social Renewal), Romualdo E. Abulad
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
This paper evaluates the titular question and features a summative evaluation and critique of the works and contributions of Leonardo Mercado, Dionisio Miranda, Albert Alejo, Rolando Gripaldo (1947-2017), and Florentino Timbreza to the anthropological and cultural approaches that form a significant part of the discourses on Filipino philosophy. In this piece, Abulad maintains, as in his other writings, that any strict emphasis with regard to methodology restricts the true potential of Filipino philosophy. He buttresses this assertion by invoking postmodernism's 'incredulity towards metanarratives' We should be skeptical about the metanarrative of Filipino identity for it is precisely our rootlessness that …
Filipino Postmodernity: Quo Vadis?, Romualdo E. Abulad
Filipino Postmodernity: Quo Vadis?, Romualdo E. Abulad
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
In this paper, Romualdo Abulad initially presents variations of postmodernity as distinct historical breaks which feature paradigmatic shifts that lead us to a new beginning. Postmodernity, as Abulad shows, is characterized by a radical openness; this leads him to argue that postmodernity as an event occurred in different moments in the history of thought, from ancient to contemporary. In what seems to be a dialectical description of history, he maintains that an opportunity for a break occurs when the inherent limitations and deficiencies of the prevailing status quo emerge, and as a result, ignite the tensions between the preservation of …

The Japanese Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, marked the beginning of total war between the United States and Japan. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, giving the military broad abilities to exclude any person(s) from prescribed military areas. Less than one week later, U.S. Army Lieutenant General John DeWitt began the process of removing Japanese Americans from their West Coast homes. Within four months of the Executive Order, the United States government forced over 100,000 Japanese Americans to abandon their lives and relocate to internment camps. Fred Korematsu, a twenty-three-year-old, natural-born American …

Corrosion Of Ecaped Magnesium Alloys And Its Background: A Review, G Manjunath Naik, N Sannayellappa, S Selvin Satheesh Kumar
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The aim of this review article is to provide a brief mechanistic overview of magnesium alloys, equal channel angular pressing and corrosion behavior of un-ECAPed and ECAPed Mg alloys. The considerate of the corrosion processes of ECAPed Mg alloys builds upon interpretation of the corrosion of fine-grain magnesium alloys. This provides an understanding of the effect of grain size on corrosion of Mg alloys. This deep understanding is essential as a foundation if we are to produce corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys. Considerable has previously been accomplished, but there is enormous scope for development. This present concise review can provide a foundation …

Corrosion Behaviors Of Ship Structural Steel In Simulated Marine Tidal Environment, N Jaiyos, E Viyanit, P Mungsantisuk, K Sirivedin
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The tidal zone is severe marine environment for steel structures due to its wet-dry cyclic corrosion pattern. Regarding a specific application for inner ship hull, ship structural steel is always prone to corrosion dealing with three marine environments, including atmospheric, tidal, and immersion zones. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate corrosion behaviors of two commercial ship structural steels, i.e. alloys A and B, which were exposed to simulated marine tidal environment. The effects of specimen arrangements designated as the isolated short-scale and vertical long-scale specimens were also determined. Based on weight loss determination, it revealed that the corrosion rates …

Wood Plastic Composites Based On Recycled Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) And Poly(Butylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate), P Chaiwutthinan, A Pimpong, A Larpkasemsuk, S Chuayjuljit, A Boonmahitthisud
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this work, wood plastic composites (WPCs) were prepared from a selected recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blend ratio. The 70/30 (wt%/wt%) (rPET)/PBAT blend was incorporated with six loadings of wood flour (WF) (5 - 30 wt%) through melt mixing on a twin screw extruder, followed by injection molding. The mechanical properties of the WPCs, in terms of the impact, tensile and flexural strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break were determined as a function of the WF content. The results showed that the impact strength and elongation at break of the WPCs were all lower than those of …
The Use Of Reclaimed Rubber From Waste Tires For Production Of Dynamically Cured Natural Rubber/Reclaimed Rubber/Polypropylene Blends: Effect Of Reclaimed Rubber Loading, A Thitithammawong, C Hayichelaeh, W Nakason, N Jehvoh
The Use Of Reclaimed Rubber From Waste Tires For Production Of Dynamically Cured Natural Rubber/Reclaimed Rubber/Polypropylene Blends: Effect Of Reclaimed Rubber Loading, A Thitithammawong, C Hayichelaeh, W Nakason, N Jehvoh
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Reclaimed rubber (RR) from waste tires was introduced into thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on blends of natural rubber (NR)/RR/polypropylene (PP). The curing characteristics of NR/RR compounds together with properties of TPVs, i.e., mixing and dynamic vulcanization behaviors and mechanical, dynamic and morphological properties, were investigated with respect to RR content. The results show that the RR affects static and dynamic vulcanization of rubber molecules by increasing cure rate but lowers curing efficiency. Increasing the RR content in NR/RR/PP TPVs slightly reduces tensile strength but with a sharp impact on elongation at break. Dynamic properties reveal that elastomeric response of NR/RR/PP …

One Step Pressing-Annealing To Produce Ltp Mnbi Magnets, T Charoensuk, A Tamman, P Jantaratana, S Abbasi, C Sirisathitkul
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The production process for the high-purity low-temperature-phase (LTP) manganese bismuth (MnBi) magnets requires arc-melting, grinding and annealing materials under inert atmosphere. However, the formation of MnO is practically unavoidable during these steps since both Mn and MnBi are easily oxidized even by trace amounts of oxygen. In this work, an oxygen-free pressing-annealing system is developed to facilitate the synthesis of LTP MnBi with minimal oxidization. The semi-automatic pressing is carried out by using the compression piston and the load cell is used to measure the pressing force. The copper plate and cylindrical container are heated by nichrome filament heating. Mn …

Use Of Steam Explosion As A Green Alternative Method To Prepare Pulp From Pineapple Leaves, S Tanpichai, A Boonmahitthisud, S Witayakran
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The use of agricultural wastes as an alternative form of the cellulosic material to wood has gained considerable attention due to the reduction of deforestation. After cultivation, a large number of pineapple leaves are considered as a waste. Here, the potential steam explosion process was used as a green alternative way to prepare pulp from pineapple leaves without any addition of the chemical treatments. The pineapple leaf fibers were defibrillated from fiber bundles due to the rapid depressurization with the steam pressure between 16 and 20 kgf·cm-2. The partly removal of hemicellulose and lignin associated with the increase of the …

A Computational Analysis Of Constitutional Polarization, David E. Pozen, Eric L. Talley, Julian Nyarko
Cornell Law Review
This Article is the first to use computational methods to investigate the ideological and partisan structure of constitutional discourse outside the courts. We apply a range of machine- learning and text-analysis techniques to a newly available data set comprising all remarks made on the U.S. House and Senate floors from 1873 to 2016, as well as a collection of more recent newspaper editorials. Among other findings, we demonstrate (1) that constitutional discourse has grown increasingly polarized over the past four decades; (2) that polarization has grown faster in constitutional discourse than in nonconstitutlonal discourse; (3) that conservative-leaning speakers have driven …

Extending United States V. Mendoza: Why Defensive Nonmutual Issue Preclusion Is Unavailable Against The Federal Government, Jake E. Goodman
Cornell Law Review
Imagine a situation where the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is Looking to enforce the antifraud provision of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 against two different companies, arising out of the same transaction. Now suppose the SEC sues Company A ftrst. However, the court finds no violation based on the factual determinations of the transaction and renders a judgment refusing to impose liability against Company A. Unsatisfied, the SEC decides to sue Company B under the same provision. Company B, however, believes the factual issues were already litigated and determined against Company A and wants to preclude relitigation …
The Audiences Of Statutes, David S. Louk
The Audiences Of Statutes, David S. Louk
Cornell Law Review
Although a maxim of statutory drafting is to identify the relevant audience and draft so that the audience can "get the message," conventional theories of statutory interpretation often overlook important considerations about how statutes communicate and delegate to a diverse range of intended audiences. Statutes exist to change the conduct and behavior of many kinds of intended audiences, including administrative agencies, state and local governments, law enforcement officers, corporations, interest groups, lawyers, and laypeople. Influenced by lessons from the philosophies of law and language, this Article contends that Judicial statutory interpretation serves an important yet underappreciated role in providing a …

Methods: The study utilized secondary data from 2015–2016 MDHS. Total 7,652 married women in reproductive age (MWRA) were included and 16% of them had unmet need for family …
Baby Girl Z : A Novel, Kathryn Bradley
Baby Girl Z : A Novel, Kathryn Bradley
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The novel Baby Girl Z examines the worlds of fertility treatment, neonatal intensive care, and early motherhood. The critical introduction highlights the connections between Baby Girl Z and contemporary fiction, autofiction, and memoirs about motherhood while exploring how the traditional tools of literary analysis and creative writing, when paired with feminist rhetorical analysis, promote a new reading of these texts as the literature of lived, traumatic experience. The theoretical underpinnings of the novel can be found in works that explore the intersections of the fields of creative writing, feminist rhetorics and maternal theory, such as Leigh Gilmore’s Autobiographics. The novel’s …

Addressing Barriers To Maternal Healthcare For Marshallese Islanders In Northwest Arkansas: An Internship Experience, Victoria Richardson
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Marshallese community is a rapidly growing population in Northwest Arkansas. Approximately 12,000 people migrated from the Marshall Islands and settled in the state of Arkansas due to the signing of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) in 1986. Although the population in Northwest Arkansas is experiencing rapid growth, there are significant health disparities that coincide with it. Due to vast cultural differences, language barriers, low economic status, and political barriers, the Marshallese community suffers from prenatal health inequalities and poor maternal and fetal outcomes, including low birth-weight infants, premature births, and increased infant mortality. During my internship, I provided …

Community Consequences Of Airbnb, Allyson E. Gold
Community Consequences Of Airbnb, Allyson E. Gold
Washington Law Review
Short-term rental accommodations account for more than 20% of the United States lodging market, with annual sales now greater than those of nearly all legacy hotel brands. The rise of companies like Airbnb has created a booming market that provides affordable short-term rentals for travelers and new income for those with an extra couch, spare room, or even an unused home. However, while individual hosts and guests may benefit economically, the use of short-term rentals produces significant consequences for the surrounding community. Airbnb proliferation causes fewer affordable housing options, higher average asking rents, and erosion of neighborhood social capital. Due …

Emergent Regulatory Systems And Their Challenges: The Case Of Combination Medical Products, George Horvath
Washington Law Review
Where regulatory systems overlap, courts and scholars often focus on the undesirable aspects of the overlap—the ways in which systems conflict. One such context involves the regulation of prescription drugs and medical devices by the FDA’s premarket evaluation processes and by state common-law tort and products liability actions. FDA regulation and state common law are often described as separate, conflicting regulatory systems. This Article challenges that description by proposing a model in which FDA premarket evaluation and state common law function as a single regulatory system. This model brings order to the Supreme Court’s seemingly inconsistent medical products preemption cases, …
