Corticostriatal Functional Connectivity Of Bothersome Tinnitus In Single-Sided Deafness, Jennifer Henderson-Sabes, Yingying Shang, Philip L. Perez, Jolie L. Chang, Seth E. Pross, Anne M. Findlay, Danielle Mizuiri, Leighton B. Hinkley, Srikantan S. Nagarajan, Steven W. Cheung

All Faculty Scholarship

Subjective tinnitus is an auditory phantom perceptual disorder without an objective biomarker. Bothersome tinnitus in single-sided deafness (SSD) is particularly challenging to treat because the deaf ear can no longer be stimulated by acoustic means. We contrasted an SSD cohort with bothersome tinnitus (TIN; N = 15) against an SSD cohort with no or non-bothersome tinnitus (NO TIN; N = 15) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). All study participants had normal hearing in one ear and severe or profound hearing loss in the other. We evaluated corticostriatal functional connectivity differences by placing seeds in the caudate nucleus and …

Wall-Jet Turbulence And Mixing Control By Way Of A Pulsed Inlet Velocity, Cristale D. Garnica Vallejo Dec 2019

Wall-Jet Turbulence And Mixing Control By Way Of A Pulsed Inlet Velocity, Cristale D. Garnica Vallejo

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Understanding wall-jet-induced turbulence and mixing is an important challenge in modern engineering, as drag reduction and mixing enhancement are attainable by modifying the flow development. Simulations are performed to investigate the effect on skin friction and flow mixing due to introducing controlled perturbations, at the initial shear layer of a planar wall-jet using jet inlet cyclic pulsing. The billow production by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, the instability that drives turbulence in a wall-jet, is modified by the excitation of the inlet velocity profile by a sine wave perturbation. Two types of wall-jet simulations are carried out, a two-dimensional compressible case at …

Effects Of Musical Ability On Flight Planning, Situational Awareness, And Flight Path Deviations, Andrew P. Henry Dec 2019

Effects Of Musical Ability On Flight Planning, Situational Awareness, And Flight Path Deviations, Andrew P. Henry

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Numerous studies have been conducted on music education and the benefits that learning an instrument has on the brain. However, there is little research that connects a pilot’s ability to play an instrument to a pilot’s ability to fly an airplane. When learning an instrument, students learn non-musical abilities, such as executive functions, which may correspond with the skills necessary to be a good pilot. The purpose of this study was to find a relationship between learning a musical instrument and pilot performance, specifically related to flight planning, situational awareness, and flight path deviations. This study was a quasi-experimental design …

Prior Art In The District Court, Stephen Yelderman Dec 2019

Prior Art In The District Court, Stephen Yelderman

Journal Articles

This article is an empirical study of the evidence district courts rely upon when invalidating patents. To construct our dataset, we collected every district court ruling, verdict form, and opinion (whether reported or unreported) invalidating a patent claim over a six-and-a-half-year period. We then coded individual invalidation events based on the prior art supporting the court’s analysis. In the end, we observed 3,320 invalidation events based on 817 distinct prior art references.

The nature of the prior art relied upon to invalidate patents informs the value of district court litigation as an error correction tool. The public interest in revoking …

Toxic Gymnastics Culture’S Impact On The #Metoo Movement: Sexual Abuse Survivor Aly Raisman’S Trauma Fosters Fight For Change, Jessica Malinsky

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

This paper explores how female gymnasts, particularly Aly Raisman, have sparked the gymnastics world’s involvement in the #MeToo movement. It briefly touches on Raisman’s beginnings with gymnastics and how she became an elite U.S. gymnast but promptly dives into her #MeToo story, focusing on her traumatic experiences with Olympic doctor Larry Nassar. Furthermore, her story brings to light how she and other survivors of sexual assault have faced credibility discounting, also known as gaslighting, for sharing their truth. By sharing parts of Aly Raisman and other survivors’ testimonies, this paper highlights not only the trauma and pain they endured while …

Maternal Digital Media Use During Infant Feeding And The Quality Of Feeding Interactions, Alison K. Ventura, Jordyn Levy, Sierra Sheeper Dec 2019

Maternal Digital Media Use During Infant Feeding And The Quality Of Feeding Interactions, Alison K. Ventura, Jordyn Levy, Sierra Sheeper

Kinesiology and Public Health

Experimental research with parents of older children suggests parents’ engagement with technological devices (e.g., television, mobile devices) in the presence of their children decreases the quality of parent-child interactions. Many mothers report frequent use of technological devices during infant feeding but, to date, few studies have explored the potential association between maternal technological device use during feeding and the quality of infant feeding interactions. To this end, mothers (n = 25) and their infants (mean age = 19.3 ± 6.4 weeks) participated in a within-subject, experimental study to explore associations between maternal digital media use and feeding interaction quality …

The overarching goal of this project was to experimentally compare the bottom-bracket (BB) powermeter developed by Level Engineering, Inc., against off-the-shelf powermeters and a dynamometer. To do this, a significant amount of testing was performed. Level Engineering facilitated this testing by providing the project team with three testing apparatus – an In-Situ tester, a Stationary Tester, and a fatigue tester. The In-Situ tester was a bicycle outfitted with the BB prototype and a PowerTap powermeter. The Stationary Tester was a bicycle with a BB prototype, and the rear wheel replaced with a dynamometer. Finally, the fatigue tester made to apply …

Moral Outrage Is Elicited By Others’ Beliefs Just As Much As Their Actions: Implications For Workplace Ideological Discrimination, Emily Rose Galeza Dec 2019

Moral Outrage Is Elicited By Others’ Beliefs Just As Much As Their Actions: Implications For Workplace Ideological Discrimination, Emily Rose Galeza

Theses

Moral outrage is an emotional, cognitive, and behavioral response to moral violations, resulting in a desire to punish the transgressor. Previous research has examined moral outrage toward transgressive behaviors, but no studies have examined the potential for moral outrage to be roused by another’s beliefs alone. Do people experience moral outrage at one another’s thoughts? If so, how do they punish someone who has roused their outrage but has “done nothing wrong”? In Study 1 (n = 209), I examined moral outrage reactions at people’s unacceptable beliefs on three topics (pedophilia, sexual assault, fraud) by comparing moral outrage elicited by …

Social Discounting Of Clean Water And Environmental Sustainability, Ashley Katz Dec 2019

Social Discounting Of Clean Water And Environmental Sustainability, Ashley Katz

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine choice-making as it relates to providing a source of clean water to those at varying social distances. A discounting survey was completed by 65 participants asking them to choose between spending a specified about of money on plastic water bottles that have a 100% chance of harming the environment or spending $1000 on a water filtration system that has a 0% chance of harming the environment. Results indicated that as social distance increased, responding became more impulsive as evident by a steeper amount of discounting. For “Person #1”, 27.69% of participants chose …

Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart Dec 2019

Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In the United States, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and stroke survivors often face long-term disability. After ischemic stroke, the ischemic territory can expand and recruit previously viable tissues into the lesioned area. During this critical period, there is an unsettling lack of interventions that prevent or treat secondary neuronal loss and cognitive decline. Clinical subdural recordings have revealed a close link between infarct progression and waves of spreading depolarizations (SD) in the acutely injured brain. SD is a slowly progressing wave of near-complete neuroglia depolarization that is extremely energetically demanding and this additional metabolic ‘hit’ …

Behavior Of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns Having Slender Inner Steel Tubes, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady Dec 2019

Behavior Of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns Having Slender Inner Steel Tubes, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper experimentally investigates the seismic behavior of three large-scale hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel (HC-FCS) columns. An HC-FCS column consisted of a concrete shell sandwiched between an outer glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tube and an inner steel tube. Both tubes provided continuous confinement for the concrete shell along with the height of the column. The columns had two different steel tube diameter-to-thickness (Ds/ts) ratios of 85, and 254. Each steel tube was embedded into the footing, with an embedded length of 1.25-1.6 times its diameter, while the GFRP tube was not embedded into the footing. Two columns were tested as as-built …

The Impact Of Goal Orientation And Learning Organization On Mobbing Of Academic Advisors In The U.S., Bette A. Ludwig Dec 2019

The Impact Of Goal Orientation And Learning Organization On Mobbing Of Academic Advisors In The U.S., Bette A. Ludwig

Dissertations

Mobbing emerged in research decades ago as a way to understand aggressive behavior in the animal kingdom (Lorenz, 1966). This same concept has been adapted for higher education to explain acts of incivility and negative behaviors employees experience within their institutions (Duffy & Sperry, 2007, 2012; Harper, 2016; Yelgecen & Kokalan, 2009). The theory of mobbing encompasses both the organization and the aggressor.

This quantitative study, operationalized using measurable behaviors from the Work Domain Goal Orientation Questionnaire (Vandewalle, 1997), the Dimension of Learning Organization Questionnaire (Watkins and Marsick, 1993), and the Negative Acts Questionnaire (Einarsen, 1997), researches mastery orientation, performance …

Verb Usage In Egyptian Movies, Serials, And Blogs: A Case For Register Variation, Michael G. White Dec 2019

Verb Usage In Egyptian Movies, Serials, And Blogs: A Case For Register Variation, Michael G. White

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contributes to the discussion of register variation within Egyptian Arabic by focusing on the usage of verbs in blogs and transcripts of movies and television. Register variation has been extensively researched for English as well as several other languages; yet, the lexical and grammatical features that distinguish registers of Egyptian Arabic have not been analyzed. Several challenges have prevented such an analysis, among them the perceived lack of an automatic annotator and the uncertainty of results. In order to overcome these challenges, two corpora were compiled: one containing texts from blogs and the other transcripts of movies and …

Fengyi Zhang Dec 2019

Fengyi Zhang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

In Shiyanzhibian, Zhu Ziqing believes that the essence of shiyanzhi is that the purpose of expressing thoughts and ideas is to emphasize the significance of official propaganda. This conviction, which has major academic influence, is actually an induction of the overall poetic thoughts of Han Dynasty, rather than aiming at the essence of shiyanzhi. This essay holds this argument from three aspects: the practice and interpretation of shiyanzhi of pre-Qin period, the illustrations of shiyanzhi of poets themselves, and exegetical studies (xungu) of shiyanzhi. In doing so, this essay reevaluates the very essence of shiyanzhi, and proposes that shiyanzhi …

Xiuyan Fu Dec 2019

Xiuyan Fu

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Narrative covers lyricism in the broad sense, while it is juxtaposed with lyricism in the narrow sense. In today’s scholarship, the efforts have been made to integrate issues related to lyricism into the theoretical system of narratology. It may not be necessary to put forward lyrical tradition beyond narrative tradition in the west, but in China it is important to pervade the culture of historiography and seek the real source of literary tradition from the poetic perspective. Narratology should not be a “heartless” science, and the study of narrative tradition should not ignore the distinguished features of its own …

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

This paper aims to study the Chinese translation of Maurice. Homosexuality has been a sensitive topic, a taboo in many social contexts. Translation Studies in the West witnesses increasing academic attention in the translation of gay literature in the past two decades, while it has remained largely neglected in the Chinese context. The writing and translation of gay literature has always been closely associated with conflicts, culturally and ideologically. Maurice, by British novelist E. M. Forster, is considered as the founding work for contemporary gay literature. Though it was finished in 1913, it had …

Jianguo Cao, Zijun Yi Dec 2019

Jianguo Cao, Zijun Yi

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

As a work of natural history, this book describes in detail the biological properties and practical functions of more than 100 species of plants and animals while fully showing the rich forms of food, medicine, production, entertainment, religion and fangshu used by people in the Han-Wei era, making it an important reference for understanding the scenery and …

Jen-Nien Chai Dec 2019

Jen-Nien Chai

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Literature is not only a matter of personal creation but also a matter of tradition and heritage. This essay intends to explore the relationship between creation and tradition, especially in the case of Yuan Huang-tao, a man of letter in Ming dynasty. Yuan was born after the prime time of the imitation and restoration of the ancient style when poems were only the reflection of those written by the masters of Han and Tang dynasties. The so-called imitation school was composed of a group of poets such as Li Meng-yang, Ho Ching-ming, Li Pan-lung, and Wang Shih-chen. Yuan was …

Kao-Ping Chang Dec 2019

Kao-Ping Chang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Why is there such a thing as taboo narrative? Because according to The Analects, Confucius wrote Chun Qiu in accordance with the incidents of the time when sarcasm, praises, and criticism were taboos and cannot be written, therefore authors appropriated writing skills and hidden words to satirize. The main point of taboo narrative is to show how the authority taboos shame or mistakes of the elders. Sima Qian wrote four essays on the war between Emperor Wu of Han and Xiongnu in Shi Ji, which I will discuss in this paper. Among these four, Biography of General Lee describes …

Longsun Rao Dec 2019

Longsun Rao

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

From a comprehensive perspective of the development and evolution of Chinese literature, we can see that narration and lyricism have gone through the course of commensalism, divisions, growth and decline, and mutual permeation. The boundary between narration and lyricism is constantly fluxing and changing, without a clear-cut definition. From primitive religions to performative writings such as The Book of Songs, narration and lyricism were originally co-existing. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Warring States Period and the Han Dynasty, the narration in The Book of Songs began to separate from analogies and symbols. To be more precise, narration …
