Immunogenetic Response Of The Bananaquit In The Face Of Malarial Parasites, Jennifer Antonides, Samarth Mathur, Mekala Sundaram, Robert Ricklefs, J. Dewoody

Biology Department Faculty Works

Background: In the arms race between hosts and parasites, genes involved in the immune response are targets for natural selection. Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) genes play a role in parasite detection as part of the innate immune system whereas Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes encode proteins that display antigens as part of the vertebrate adaptive immune system. Thus, both gene families are under selection pressure from pathogens. The bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) is a passerine bird that is a common host of avian malarial parasites (Plasmodium sp. and Haemoproteus sp.). We assessed molecular variation of TLR and MHC genes in a wild …

Cyclic GMP (cGMP) is an important regulator in eukaryotes, and cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) plays a key role in perceiving cellular cGMP in diverse physiological processes in animals. However, the molecular identity, property, and function of PKG in plants remain elusive. In this study, we have identified PKG from plants and characterized its role in mediating the gibberellin (GA) response in rice (Oryza sativa). PKGs from plants are structurally unique with an additional type 2C protein phosphatase domain. Rice PKG possesses both protein kinase and phosphatase activities, and cGMP stimulates its kinase activity but inhibits its phosphatase activity. One of …

Treading The Winepress; Or, A Mountain Of Misfortune, Clarissa Minnie Thompson Allen, Gabrielle Brown, Eric Willey, Jean Macdonald

Undiscovered Americas

“Every life hath its chapter of sorrow. No matter how rich the gilding or fair the pages of the volume, Trouble will stamp it with his sable signet.”

So begins the novel Treading the Winepress; or, A Mountain of Misfortune by Clarissa Minnie Thompson Allen, which, had it appeared in book form in 1885–1886 instead of serialized in The Boston Advocate, would have been the second novel published by a black woman in the United States. Instead, Allen has been mostly forgotten by literary history. Now, thanks to the painstaking efforts of editors Gabrielle Brown, Eric Willey, and Jean …

Modeling Market Reactions To Auditor Changes Using Variable Selection Algorithms: A Meta-Analysis, Richard Holowczak, David A. Louton, Hakan Saraoglu, Charles Cullinan

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

Market reactions to auditor change filings have been studied over a long period in the literature. We provide a review of the literature on market response to auditor changes and identify a superset of variables used in published research. Applying methods from machine learning to optimize variable selection, we build models that explain market reaction to auditor changes. We compare the performance of our models with the performance of the models that use subsets of variables examined in a select list of studies in the literature. Our meta-analysis results in an improvement in model fit compared to the analysis used …

Alkalinity And Mineral Concentration Estimation In Commercial Drinking Water, Holly Mills

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

Several aspects of water and water quality were reviewed and investigated in this study; the effects of dehydration on human health, the role of alkalinity in drinking water, and the actual levels of alkalinity and other minerals in commercial drinking water. Hydration plays a critical role in human physical performance as well as in the prevention of chronic diseases. This experiment was conducted to determine if the level of acidity ( or alkalinity) of commercial alkaline water are truly above the normal ph levels, and to identify the salts in each type of water. Based on researches, a more alkaline …

Maritime Environmental Violations Within Nigeria & Its Impacts, Chinedu Chidia Maduekwe Dec 2019

Maritime Environmental Violations Within Nigeria & Its Impacts, Chinedu Chidia Maduekwe

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

The maritime industry contributes its own fair share of pollution within Nigerian ports and communities by way of crude oil spills and inappropriate waste management facilities. This spills often occur on wetlands needed for commercial maritime activities and economic survival by local inhibitors. The inadequate disposal of ship waste by privately owned waste management facilities can lead to the encouragement of illicit disposal of waste and ballast into the sea before registering into ports and terminals. Such waste can introduce toxic and noxious liquids into waters affecting marine lifeforms and indirectly, local communities. as a result of such incident, a …

Setting Our Feet: The Foundations Of Religious And Conscience Protections, Hanna Torline Dec 2019

Setting Our Feet: The Foundations Of Religious And Conscience Protections, Hanna Torline

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note does not attempt to claim that religion and conscience are not moral equivalents, that they are not equally important, or that they do not require equal legal treatment. Nor does it attempt to claim the converse. Simply put, it argues that a consideration of the different foundations underlying conscience protections and religious protections should give pause to anyone arguing that the two are equivalent. This Note concludes that the rationales behind protecting religion and conscience are different enough to merit consideration in the debate. For if religion and conscience are treated as equivalents under the law, they will …

Functional Mobility In A Patient With Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Following A Femoral Neck Fracture Surgical Repair: A Case Report, Mckenna Young

Case Report Posters

Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome is an autoimmune disease which causes the body to produce antibodies that attack phospholipids, a type of fat. It leads to high rates of blood clot formation in arteries and veins. High rates of blood clots cause stroke, which can lead to balance concerns and increased falls. Fall rates among individuals with chronic disease peak between age 45-64. Fall risk factors include reduced mobility level, imbalance, age, number of co-morbidities, duration of diagnosis, and sex. The purpose of this case report is to investigate a comprehensive physical therapy program that focused on increasing independence and reducing fall …

Combining A Comprehensive Physical Therapy Program And Electroshock Therapy For A Patient With Plantar Fasciitis: A Case Report, Kathryn Piersiak

Case Report Posters

Plantar fasciitis (PF) affects 2 million Americans per year and 10% of the population over a lifetime. PF is inflammation to the thick, fibrous connective tissue originating on the medial calcaneal tubercle extending to the metatarsal heads of the foot. A comprehensive physical therapy (PT) plan of care (POC) of proximal strengthening, distal stretching and soft tissue massage (STM) has been shown to improve PF symptoms. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive modality that uses sound waves to create a controlled microtrauma to the impaired tissue to stimulate a healing response and microvascularization. ESWT has shown to be effective …

Conservative Management Of A Massive Rotator Cuff Tear And Partial Tear Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report, Jessica Diggins

Case Report Posters

A rotator cuff tear (RCT) is a common injury to the shoulder musculature that increases in prevalence with age. RCT’s can be classified into five categories determined by the muscular involved: Type A: supraspinatus & superior subscapularis; Type B: supraspinatus & entire subscapularis; Type C: supraspinatus, superior subscapularis & infraspinatus; Type D: supraspinatus & infraspinatus tears; Type E: supraspinatus, infraspinatus & teres minor. Massive RCT is classified as >5cm in size, or complete tear of two or more tendons. Some massive tears may be considered irreparable due to the extent of tendon retraction, atrophy, arthritis and mobilization. Current literature supports the …

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy For The Treatment Of An Acl Reconstruction With A Meniscal Repair: A Case Report, Nicole Victor Dec 2019

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy For The Treatment Of An Acl Reconstruction With A Meniscal Repair: A Case Report, Nicole Victor

Case Report Posters

ACL tears make up ~50% of all knee injuries. Meniscal tears are second to ACL injuries in regards to prevalence. Following an ACL reconstruction, high-load resistance training is often used to increase muscle strength. However, rehabilitation after a meniscal repair calls for a longer period of immobilization in order to prevent early loading of the meniscus. Blood Flow Restriction Therapy (BFRT) used in conjunction with low intensity resistance training can produce increased muscle mass of the quadriceps muscles without adding load and stress to the meniscus. While evidence has shown positive results with the use of BFRT after an ACLR, …
